Dave and Mike talk about the religious themes in Ernest Cline's Ready Player One.
Put another quarter in the coin slot folks, because it's time to talk about Ernest Cline's Ready Player One. Topics include bad fan culture, the narrowness of the characters' "exhaustive" knowledge of 80s popular culture, and why the critical response to this book has shifted so much in just a few short years.
On this installment of 'MULTIMEDIOCRITY: The Broadcast!,' Talley and Doofin (who's doped up and down a finger) discuss the mostly good nostalgic escapism that is Steven Spielberg's big screen adaptation of Ernest Cline's READY PLAYER ONE, as well as the greatness of both a Spielberg chase sequence and said director's recent secret weapon, Mark Rylance. As is the norm, they also spout off some misinformation, including mistaking actor Derek Luke's roles more than once and referring to Marvel's Secret Wars story arc when they (Talley) meant Secret Invasion. The second half gets a little sopabox-y (which is also par for the course), with the gents choosing not to watch the Roseanne reboot; showing reverence for greats like the reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mister Fred Rogers, and Roger Ebert; and wondering how America got to a place where empathy and kindness is a political stance that has to be defended. Take the sticky buns, but leave the aioli with them on episode 25, heard via the State Lines Network!
When it was published in 2011, Ernest Cline's Ready Player One got a fairly warm reception as a diverting mashup of pop culture, gaming, and accessible quest narrative, wrapped up in a warm, comforting blanket of nostalgia for the ephemera of the 1970s and 80s. Over the past seven years, its reputation has proven much more divisive, in part because of Cline's subsequent work, but mostly because the kind of geek culture he celebrated has become much darker and more complicated. Matt and Ed talk about all that in regards to the film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, as well as Amazon's big-budget TV gambles and the dystopian potential of Birmingham. 00:00:00 - 00:25:48 - Intro & News 00:25:49 - 01:09:15 - Matt & Ed discuss Ready Player One 01:09:16 - 01:17:06 - SRS Recommends & Outro

With Dark Knight about to open (at the time) we contemplate the comic book movie explosion. So many explosions. Then we talk about Ready Player One, and Lords of Waterdeep. And other stuff. An explosion of other stuff! Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the explosions. 1. Mighty Marvel Movies Precap and Recap 2. The Avengers Recap it took 2 days for people to get Justin's 2am shawarma joke How would you Plan an Avengers Marathon?! 3. New Marvel Movie Announcements Iron Man 3: Iron Manner (Ben Kingsley the Mandarin) Captain America Winter Soldier (Sharon Carter can allow a positive Bechdel) Thor: The Dark World (We dunno?) Guardians of the Galaxy (LOL) (Moondragon and Quasar - you can never have too many lesbians in superhero movies; but they only show Gamora) Ant Man. Yes, we said Ant-Man. WHY NOT NEXTWAVE?! It has three female superheroes, and two idiots. Well they're all idiots. A complete and total (UNPRINTABLE) is what everyone called Aaron Stack. 4. Boards of Waterdeep!
