Latent Space: The AI Engineer Podcast — CodeGen, Agents, Computer Vision, Data Science, AI UX and all things Software 3.0

We'll keep this brief because we're on a tight turnaround: GPT 4.1, previously known as the Quasar and Optimus models, is now live as the natural update for 4o/4o-mini (and the research preview of GPT 4.5). Though it is a general purpose model family, the headline features are: Coding abilities (o1-level SWEBench and SWELancer, but ok Aider) Instruction Following (with a very notable prompting guide) Long Context up to 1m tokens (with new MRCR and Graphwalk benchmarks) Vision (simply o1 level) Cheaper Pricing (cheaper than 4o, greatly improved prompt caching savings) We caught up with returning guest Michelle Pokrass and Josh McGrath to get more detail on each! SpaceTime Series 28 Episode 11Ancient Water on Mars and the Birth of the Universe's LightsScientists have uncovered two sets of ancient wave ripples on Mars, revealing evidence of long-dried ponds and lakes that once existed on the Red Planet. Discovered by NASA's Curiosity rover, these ripples, formed approximately 3.7 billion years ago, indicate that shallow bodies of water were open to the Martian atmosphere, challenging previous climate models suggesting an ice-covered surface. This finding extends our understanding of the timeline for liquid water on Mars and its potential for microbial life.A Quasar's Role in Cosmic IlluminationAstronomers have detected a highly variable quasar that may have played a crucial role in turning on the lights of the universe. This quasar, observed by the NuSTAR and Chandra X-ray space telescopes, is one of the most distant objects detected and provides new insights into the growth of supermassive black holes in the early universe. Its rapid brightness fluctuations offer vital clues about the epoch of reionization, a time when the universe transitioned from darkness to light.European Space Agency's Probe 3 Mission MilestoneThe European Space Agency's Probe 3 spacecraft has successfully split into two, marking a significant step in its ambitious mission. This unique formation-flying mission aims to create artificial solar eclipses to study the Sun's corona with unprecedented precision. The two spacecraft will maintain a separation of just 150 meters, demonstrating advanced navigation and propulsion technologies essential for future space exploration.00:00 Space Time Series 28 Episode 11 for broadcast on 24 January 202500:49 Discovery of ancient wave ripples on Mars06:15 Quasar may illuminate the early universe12:30 European Space Agency's Probe 3 spacecraft successfully splits18:00 Blood vessel fingerprint in the eye may indicate stroke risk22:45 Early humans adapted to desert-like conditions26:00 Global water cycle disruptions due to climate extremes30:00 Reevaluation of the Paleo diet based on ancient human dietswww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

Astrophysicist and professor, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell reflects on how she helped change astronomy forever. In this episode, learn more about how a peculiar signal from space led Jocelyn to a groundbreaking discovery. She discusses her aerospace journey, building a radio telescope, discovering pulsars, and the 1974 Nobel Prize controversy. This one is going to be cool!Key Takeaways:At the time, women were not often permitted to study science fields in school. Her parents protested this rule and Jocelyn became top of her class in Physics. While attending Cambridge, Jocelyn helped build their radio telescope alongside Astronomers Martin Ryle and Antony Hewish.Originally the telescope was built to study Quasars, which are distant galaxies whose incredibly bright cores are powered by supermassive black holes. While observing and researching the telescope, Jocelyn found a strange "pulse" that occurred at regular intervals. Labeled LGM-1 or Little Green Men 1, it was the first recording of a pulsar.Since pulsars were discovered, over 3,000 have been found today. In 1974, Martin Ryle and Antony Hewish were awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of pulsars. Because Martin and Antony were the telescopes' leaders, Jocelyn, a student at the time, was left out. She has since been awarded several prestigious accolades.Jocelyn encourages audiences to double-check anomalies as they never know which scientific discoveries could be found.Resources:Jocelyn's Bio (Wikipedia) What are pulsars? The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009

Observations using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) confirm astronomers' expectation that early-Universe quasars formed in regions of space densely populated with companion galaxies. DECam's exceptionally wide field of view and special filters played a crucial role in reaching this conclusion, and the observations reveal why previous studies seeking to characterize the density of early-Universe quasar neighborhoods have yielded conflicting results. In this podcast, Dr. Trysten Lambert discusses how DECam enabled astronomers to reach this conclusion.   Bios: Rob Sparks is in the Communications, Education and Engagement group at NSF's NOIRLab in Tucson, Arizona.   Dr. Trystan Lambert's research career has focused exclusively on extragalactic observational astronomy, exploring both low and high redshift regimes. During his M.Sc. at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, he contributed to the completion of the 2MASS Redshift Survey and developed the galaxy group catalog. He then moved to Chile, where he pursued my Ph.D. at Universidad Diego Portales, studying galaxies and quasars in the epoch of reionization using ALMA and DECam.   Dr. Lambert  is currently a Research Associate at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research. He spends his days developing tools to identify large-scale structures in redshift surveys, particularly in the Wide Area VISTA Extragalactic Survey (WAVES). Identifying these large-scale structures allows us to map the distribution of dark matter in the local universe and provides a crucial test bed for current cosmological theories.   NOIRLab press release: https://noirlab.edu/public/news/noirlab2422/ Science News Press Release: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/quasar-zapping-star-formation ICRAR press-release: https://www.icrar.org/quasar-neighbourhoods/ Original Paper: A lack of LAEs within 5Mpc of a luminous quasar in an overdensity at z=6.9: potential evidence of quasar negative feedback at protocluster scales: https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.06870   NOIRLab social media channels can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/NOIRLabAstro https://twitter.com/NOIRLabAstro https://www.instagram.com/noirlabastro/ https://www.youtube.com/noirlabastro   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! The Year in Comics  Comic books managed to make it into the news and public consciousness in different ways in 1992, as movies, TV shows, new companies and a massive character death kept things interesting!  Notable and Newsworthy Sales & Industry Trends Beginnings and Endings Memorials Eisner Awards Dan's Favorite The Year in Marvel 1992 is a weird year, in that as it begins nothing seems to have changed from the heady days of 1991.  But the Image artists no longer are present as the summer rolls around, and the Marvel Universe itself moves into darker territory.  Here begins the anti-hero turn of the 90s, with dark futures and truly irredeemable villains.  TOTAL SERIES: 246  TOTAL NEW SERIES: 149  TOTAL ENDING SERIES: 129  THIS YEAR'S EVENT(S):   Operation Galactic Storm (Avengers and Quasar in a Kree/Shiar war) X-Cutioner's Song (X-Men fight Stryfe)  BEST SELLING COMICS: Death of Superman, Spawn and all the Image books  Events & Happenings New Titles (Ongoing and Limited) New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Chris Bachalo Dan's Favorite   Next week: 1992 Part 2 - The year in Daredevil  Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details.    The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.  Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics.  This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377.  My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss.  This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage.  BOOKLIST  The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show.  Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it!  Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo.  Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon.  London: Titan Books, 2020.  This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print.  It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion.  So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing.  Wells, John.  American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964.  Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015.  Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read.  Wright, Bradford.  Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America.  Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001.  This is the revised edition.  Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2022.  The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021.    Cowsill, Alan et al.  DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2010.  Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to.  Dauber, Jeremy.  American Comics: A History.  New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022.  An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments.  An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

Join us for SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 77, where we explore the latest cosmic discoveries and advancements in space exploration.First, astronomers have discovered the earliest known pair of quasars in the process of merging. Reported in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, this discovery represents the earliest known merger of supermassive black holes, occurring just 900 million years after the Big Bang. This period, known as the cosmic dawn, is crucial for understanding the formation of the first stars and galaxies and the epoch of reionization.Next, NASA's Mars Perseverance rover has discovered oddly textured, popcorn-like rocks in a formation known as Bright Angel. These rocks suggest the presence of groundwater in Mars' past, and mission managers plan to conduct detailed exploration to uncover their origins. Finally, new insights into the Milky Way's supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, have been presented at the 244th meeting of the American Astronomical Society. Using decades of x-ray data, astronomers have uncovered previously undetected flares and echoes, providing valuable information about the black hole's environment and past activity.Follow our cosmic conversations on X @stuartgary, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
