I’m ba-a-a-ck! Being a grandfather isn’t something that you train for. It was quite challenging last week to go outside and shoot basketball for an hour in the summer heat with an 8-year old intent on dispatching his creeky ol’ Grandpa in morning games of one-on-one. He took the overall 3-game series, but Grandpa held his own (at least for this year). Now, where did I put that tube of SportsCreme? In fact, the past month has found my lovely wife and I spending a full week with each set of our five young (10 and under) grandsons. We have enjoyed a total summer blast! Now, the house is quiet again. Our eight-year old rescued Old English Sheepdog (Molly) seems to be mourning the loss of our fine young gentleman visitors and their very patient Dad. Molly enjoyed extra company during her morning and evening dog walks every day. It has been difficult to keep close tabs on sports while traveling to visit or hosting our very sharp and fun-loving grandsons over the past month. Some things appear to have changed a lot. Others didn’t. It’s time to catch-up. Good news! Saints legend Drew Brees was inducted into the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame! New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees led the Black and Gold to their only Super Bowl appearance and title in February, 2010. He set numerous NFL passing records during his stellar 20-year pro football career. The Texas-born Brees was an excellent student as well. He majored in Industrial Management at Purdue University. Drew Brees quarterbacked the Boilermakers football team to the Rose Bowl in 2001 as the team won a share of the Big Ten title. The San Diego Chargers selected Brees with the first pick in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft. It’s hard to believe that he played in San Diego for the first five years of his pro football career. A trade to the New Orleans Saints in 2006 also paired Drew Brees with new head coach Sean Payton. It would be a match made in WhoDat Heaven for us Saints fans. Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in August, 2005. The Louisiana Superdome was painstakingly repaired and refurbished the following year as New Orleans welcomed home its beloved football team along with a new quarterback and head coach. Drew Brees’ infectious positive attitude and leadership skills helped the Saints improve every season leading up to that Super Bowl victory. More importantly, the Saints’ rise served to boost the spirits of the entire Gulf South region during recovery efforts from both Hurricane Katrina and, a month later, Rita in southwestern Louisiana. Sorry, Archie Manning supporters. The true GOAT (greatest of all time) for the majority of New Orleans Saints fans is Hall-of-Fame quarterback Drew Brees. Congratulations! Red-hot Red Sox are blazing in baseball’s American League! The Boston Red Sox have won 27 of their last 32 baseball games through Sunday, August 9. Boston was at the bottom of the American League East standings earlier in the season. The BoSox are still seven games behind the Tampa Bay Rays with 45 games left to play in baseball’s seemingly never-ending 162-game regular season. Late inning comebacks have been the rule during Boston’s recent hot streak during July and into early August. Will the Boston Red Sox remain hot during this hottest month of the year? Stay tuned! The eight team UFL recently packed-up and left Houston and Birmingham. Why? Spring pro football’s United Football League (UFL) quietly exited two of its long-time markets less than two weeks ago. The Birmingham Stallions won three straight spring football titles from 2022 through 2024. A brand new college football stadium for UAB featuring nearly 40,000 seats played host for Stallions home games in each of the past five seasons. The UFL’s billionaire owner and apparent league spokesman, Mike Repole, jousted with Birmingham football fans earlier this season about their lack of support for the team. It’s no surprise that Repole just pulled the plug after attendance declined this year. His excuse for leaving Birmingham is what has raised eyebrows in Alabama. He said, “With Birmingham, this decision was 100% about the wrong sized venue. Even on opening day, when 16,000 Stallions fans showed up, the energy, passion, and game atmosphere was not felt due to the size of the venue.” Here’s a question for you, Mr. Repole. Doing just as you requested, the Houston UFL franchise vacated its college football stadium at the University of Houston. The Houston Gamblers moved into the city’s downtown soccer venue with 20,000 seats this season. How do you explain why less than 7,000 fans attended Houston Gamblers football games this spring? The team did exactly what you asked for and had even less success. Houston’s UFL franchise is now defunct. Perhaps Mr. Repole might consider that the UFL’s on-field product is simply not very good. It is also played during increasingly hot spring weather – especially in the league’s southern markets. UFL games – which are (generally speaking) low scoring and not very exciting to watch – have trouble attracting local fans when tickets were priced as low as $20 apiece. The market, sir, has been and continues to speak to you quite loudly. Golf – Welcome to the winner’s circle, Jackson Koivun and Asterisk Talley! Two weeks ago, former Auburn All-American golfer Jackson Koivun picked-up his first PGA win at the 3M Open in Minnesota. It was only his third professional start! After Sunday’s middle-of-the-pack finish in his fourth PGA start at Greensboro, NC, the 21-year old Koivun has earned enough FedEx points to qualify for this week’s first round of PGA playoffs beginning Thursday in Memphis. Let’s also welcome a 17-year old upcoming high school senior golfer to the winner’s circle. Asterisk Talley (yes, that’s her real name) easily won her first USGA championship by taking the US Women’s Amateur title in Tennessee with an 8-up victory. She had previously finished runner-up in the 2024 US Junior Girls Amateur and the US Women’s Amateur. Congratulations to Ms. Talley! Yes, there will forever be an Asterisk next to her last name on the US Women’s Amateur trophy. LIV Golf remains on life support but wants to tee it up again in 2027 In this continuing soap opera, LIV Golf (completing its fifth season in late August) will lose its Sugar Daddy financial backers. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (with over $1 trillion in assets) has lost more than $5 billion to start, fund, and prop-up this worldwide golf venture. They are skedaddling by no later than the end of August. Last week, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neal announced that a new lead investor has been secured. Before you say, “Hooray!”, the golf league’s boss did not reveal a lot of specifics. We don’t know who the investor is, how much money was actually being injected, or any other details which translate into a viable 2027 LIV Golf campaign. Golfers expecting to participate in LIV Golf during 2027 (assuming there is a season) will be playing for smaller prize money and will likely be asked to share in the risk (and, if possible, the rewards) of the revamped league. The future still looks shaky for LIV Golf. The US Senate punted on 4th down to go on vacation and leave the future of college athletics hanging in the balance When you woke up on Saturday morning, the United States Senate had adjourned to take a well-earned (sarcasm intended) full month of vacation. Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) were finally able to bring their college sports bill to the floor of the US Senate over the past few weeks. It showed some encouraging signs of passage. The SEC and Big Ten finally jumped aboard to support the Senate’s “Protect College Sports Act” last week. That was the equivalent to a two-minute drill in hopes of getting this bill across the Senate’s goal line prior to the legislative body’s annual August recess. College sports conferences have been unable to get their primary rule maker and enforcement arm (the NCAA) to take consequential actions in recent years. Guidelines and enforcement of rules in today’s transfer portal and NIL high dollar environment have many mid-sized and smaller universities considering dropping sports altogether. The SEC recently suggested it was willing to break away from the NCAA and establish its own set of rules if something doesn’t change soon. With the proverbial play clock running, some Senators (as they are prone to do) tried to add amendments to the college sports bill last week. They wasted too much time and failed to bring it to a full Senate vote prior the month-long adjournment. However, the Senators are promising to bring this college sports bill to a vote when they return in early September. If that occurs, the sports bill must still be approved by the House of Representatives and then obtain the President’s signature to become law. Sounds like a Hail Mary could be needed to complete this legislation with the mid-term elections coming up in November! The post Let’s Catch up! appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.
Recorded live from Metpack, this episode brings together Brian Talley of Steelforce America and Angelica Papageorgiou, global director of the group's aluminium division, for a candid look at where the steel and aluminium supply chains stand in 2026.Talley sets out the North American picture: a stable but uncertain market, the legacy of Section 232, an inventory overhang in tinplate and cans, and a fresh US trade case on tin mill products from China, Taiwan and Turkey. He also explains the reasoning behind the company's expansion in Los Angeles and four new sales hires, and why he still believes buyers want choice rather than the lowest number.Papageorgiou gives a blunt assessment of the aluminium market. Force majeure at a major Gulf producer has taken more than three million tonnes of primary metal out of circulation, the LME has climbed past $3,600, the Japanese premium has jumped from $190 to $351, and transit times from the UAE to Latin America have stretched to around 90 days. She argues buyers need to stop shopping on price alone and start planning for continuity. The conversation closes on CBAM, recycled content, AI in scrap sorting, and whether the industry tells its own story well enough.

A North Georgia Gem Right in Our Backyard: Fred Talley's Guide to Burnt Mountain Preserve Howdy, neighbors! Fred Talley here from Faith Pest Control, right here in our beautiful corner of Pickens County. If you've lived in or around Jasper for any length of time, you know we are blessed with some of the finest mountain air, friendliest folks, and prettiest scenery in the whole state of Georgia. Whenever folks ask me what I love most about living and working up here in the mountains, I tell ’em it's the fact that you can finish up a day's work and be standing on top of a mountain ridge taking in a million-dollar view ten minutes later. One of my absolute favorite hidden gems in our local community is the Burnt Mountain Preserve. Whether you’re looking to stretch your legs, take in the seasonal wildflowers, or just enjoy a quiet moment away from the hustle and bustle, this 900-acre county-owned treasure is tough to beat. What Makes Burnt Mountain Preserve So Special? Located right off Route 136 heading east out of Jasper—just before you hit the main scenic overlook—Burnt Mountain Preserve sits at an elevation of roughly 2,500 feet. What a lot of folks don’t realize is that this land isn’t just pretty to look at—it plays a huge role in protecting our community. The preserve covers the headwaters of the Champion Creek valley and protects the Long Swamp Creek watershed, which helps safeguard the clean drinking water supply for the city of Jasper. As someone who spent years studying engineering before getting into public health and pest control, I appreciate good stewardship when I see it. Preserving this valley keeps our water clean and keeps the native wildlife thriving. Exploring the Trails: Something for Every Hiker Whether you're out for a breezy afternoon stroll or you want a workout that'll make your legs burn, the preserve has three main trails built and maintained by the Mountain Stewards: The Crest Trail (0.3 Miles – Orange Blazes): If you just want a light, easy loop to stretch your legs or get a quick breath of fresh mountain air, start here. It loops through the upper portion of the preserve and offers great winter vistas across the valley. The Preserve Trail (1.0 Mile – Yellow Blazes): Graduating to moderate difficulty, this trail takes you along ridge crests with gorgeous western and southern views looking out toward Sharp Top Mountain and Grandview Lake. Keep an eye out for the educational signage along the path identifying local tree species and native plant life. The Champion Creek Trail (Strenuous): Now, if you're looking for a true physical test, this is the one. The trail drops down 800 feet of elevation into the bottomland of the Champion Creek valley before reaching a wooden bridge over the creek. Just remember: every foot you walk down, you've got to climb right back up! A Quick Tip from Your Local Bug Man Now, you knew I couldn’t write an article about walking in the woods without throwing in a little friendly advice from your neighborhood exterminator! When you're out enjoying North Georgia's trails—especially during the warmer spring and summer months—nature is out there enjoying it, too. Ticks, mosquitoes, and chiggers love the shade of our hardwoods just as much as we do. Here are a few simple tips before you head out: Tuck and Cover: If you’re heading down the Champion Creek Trail where vegetation gets a bit thicker, tuck your pant legs into your socks. It might not be a high-fashion look, but it keeps seed ticks and chiggers off your skin. Use a Friendly Repellent: Spray an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin on your boots and lower pant legs. Do a Post-Hike Check: When you get back home to Jasper, do a quick tick check on yourself, your kids, and your pets before settling in for dinner. Get Out and Enjoy Pickens County! We are so lucky to call this area home. Places like Burnt Mountain Preserve remind us why North Georgia is such a special place to live, raise a family, and enjoy the outdoors. The next time you have a free Saturday morning, pack a bottle of water, grab a pair of sturdy walking shoes, and head up Route 136 to check out the preserve. And hey, while you're out enjoying the wild bugs in their natural habitat, make sure the ones at home aren’t invading yours! If you ever run into termites, ants, mice, or anything else creeping around your crawlspace or attic, you know who to call. Stay safe, enjoy the mountain views, and let me be YOUR bug man! — Fred Talley Owner & Certified Public Health Specialist, Faith Pest Control Jasper, Georgia The post Fred Talley's Guide to Burnt Mountain Preserve first appeared on Faith Pest Control.

Despite rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Talley Leger remains firmly in "buy the dip" mode. He argues that steady economic growth, moderating inflation, and earnings growth should keep the bull market intact, with cyclical sectors offering opportunities beyond technology.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Have you ever thought about why adoption is so close to God's heart? Maybe you know someone who was adopted or as a child you wish you were adopted (jk!) or perhaps you've thought at one time or another: Should we adopt? And what all will that mean to me and our family? Today we have our friends, Jill and Todd Talley, to talk about all things adoption as well as some mentoring topics. Todd and Jill Talley are the parents of three children, two through birth and one through adoption. In 2008 they were blessed to be able to fly to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and bring home their then 18-month-old son. Together as a family the Talleys have a passion for adoption, orphan care ministries and mentoring. So much so in 2009, Todd and Jill met with several families from Grace SLO who had adopted or fostered. Together these couples founded the Adoption and Foster Care Ministry at Grace Central Coast. The Talleys currently Co-Lead the Ministry. Some gems from our conversation: From the first time we held baby Daniel in our arms, we loved him and knew that this was how our Father in heaven holds and loves us. By entering in and serving our community, we show the Gospel in understated ways. Foster care and adoption starts with a loss—this child carries a great loss which we can't fully replace but God can through our efforts to love and come alongside as He does for us. Every child belongs in a loving family. The biggest challenge to doing foster care and mentoring is time management. We have to learn how to "layer in" a young person into our already busy schedule who just needs someone to show up and be there to listen. Being engaged in church community was invaluable to our venturing into adoption. Adoption and foster care is a picture of God's welcoming heart. By utterly depending on God for grace and strength, we want to show the same grace to the lonely, the lost, and the child who needs a family. The book Jill mentioned: There Is No Me Without You by Melissa Fay Greene Baby Daniel! For information on the Foster and Orphan Care ministry, check HERE.

Talley Leger breaks down the latest jobs report and what it means for interest rates, noting that while monthly gains improved, year-over-year payroll growth remains weak. He says bond yields continue to reflect persistent core inflation pressures. Leger also outlines a bullish view on equities, targeting 8,500 for the S&P 500 (SPX) on strong earnings and easing geopolitical risks.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/ About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
We hear consistently that life as a restaurant owner is so hard... but as diners, we can't fully understand what that reality is really like. On this panel, Ben Maides (Au Courant), Paul Urban (Block 16), and Katina Talley (Sweet Magnolias Bake Shop; Know Good) pull back the curtain, tell stories, and lay bare why the restaurant industry is so hard... and why they love it so much that they keep coming back! A shocking case out of Chicago has reignited the debate over electronic monitoring and bail reform. In April, Alphanso Talley - a repeat offender with multiple pending violent felony charges - was on electronic monitoring when he "allegedly" ambushed two police officers at Swedish Hospital, killing John Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the force. Talley had previously been released from custody over prosecutors' objections, despite what they described as clear evidence that he posed a danger to the community. He later violated the terms of his release, including missing curfews and disabling his monitoring device, yet remained at large until the violent chain of events that led to the officer's death. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Gary Talley was 19 when The Box Tops scored a number one hit with ‘The Letter.’ Alex Chilton was 16, had been up all night before the session, and came from the kind of household where that sort of thing wasn’t questioned. What followed was two and a half years of relentless touring, five albums, and a management which took advantage of them. Talley talks about growing up in Memphis during the birth of rock and roll, the story behind some of pop’s most enduring records, and what it’s like keeping The Box Tops on the road more than six decades on. Talley Leger describes the resilience of the stock market, noting that big tech is still within 5% of its all-time highs. He argues that if we can get past these latest headwinds, the market can keep climbing. He's keeping cash ready on the sidelines and is watching an “almost parabolic” rotation away from consumer discretionary into energy stocks. He shares several ETFs investors may be interested in, including the software ETF IGV and the equal-weighted consumer discretionary ETF RSPD. ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Options involve risks and are not suitable for all investors. The Zibra Blog’s BEFORE AND AFTER Furniture Refinishing Podcast
Furniture flipping looks dreamy from the outside: paint, pretty pieces, a tidy before-and-after, but Jen Talley pulls back the curtain on what actually makes it sustainable. This conversation sits in the quiet middle between passion and burnout: learning when to say yes, when to say no, and why boundaries are just as creative as brushstrokes. Jen shares how her business evolved from late-night hobby energy to an intentional, values-led rhythm; choosing better pieces, protecting her time, letting simplicity sell, and honoring the very human reasons this work matters. It's grounded, honest, and deeply reassuring for anyone trying to turn “I love this” into “this actually works.”Jen Talley is a furniture artist known for her timeless, perfectly imperfect approach and a business built on intention over hustle. Talley Leger expects resilience in the markets through 2026 despite volatility. He sees “ten tailwinds” and thinks that we are on a “higher trajectory” than the Street anticipates. He argues gold is losing its “safety premium” and that the metals market was in a bubble. “I would be shopping the sales in the cyclicals,” Talley says, along with international and small caps.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Options involve risks and are not suitable for all investors. Happier guests who spend more and a better bottom line for you. Ready to turn waits into wins? Visit accesso.com/ROIClinic. The queues are virtual. The results are real. Clay Talley is the founder of CX Immersive. He shares how his career began in water parks, expanded through the Disney College Program as a Jungle Cruise skipper, and evolved into building and implementing cohesive guest experiences across immersive projects like The Void, Ballast VR, and more. Today, he supports operators and visionaries as an implementation specialist, bridging silos like marketing, operations, and revenue so the experience feels consistent from the website to the exit gate. In this interview, Clay talks about intentional world-class experiences, vision-first, and staff as sherpa. Intentional world-class experiences “I think world-class means intentionality. What are you intentionally creating for that guest?” Clay frames “world-class” as doing things on purpose, not by accident. He explains how teams can unintentionally become reactionary, building policies around one-off situations, and how that mindset can waste effort and muddy the experience. His goal is to move organizations toward proactive design, where decisions are guided by what will reliably serve most guests, not edge cases. He also emphasizes that intentionality shows up in practical details. From simplifying ticket sales on mobile, to designing guest flow, to using elements like staffing placement and sensory cues, he sees “world-class” as repeatable, scalable, and aligned across touchpoints, while still supporting revenue, branding, and operations. Vision-first “Before I make any strategies or the plan we're going to do, I want to understand where are they at, what do they want to do, and where is that delta?” Clay explains that a strong guest experience starts by clarifying what the organization is trying to create, then aligning people and processes around it. In his fractional CXO approach, he begins by learning the current state, understanding the desired future, and identifying the gap. He shadows leaders, observes the operation firsthand, reviews documentation, and pressure-tests the journey like a guest would, including the digital path to purchase. From there, he prioritizes low-hanging fruit that builds momentum and sustainability. The vision becomes the anchor, and the work becomes translating that vision into what guests and staff actually see, feel, and do each day, in ways that are realistic for the business to maintain. Staff as a sherpa “They're the sherpa of the experience, where they're climbing this mountain and they, you know, create this experience.” Clay describes a balancing act between technology and people. He wants technology to handle what guests can do on their own, freeing staff to focus on what only humans can do, especially solving problems and creating connections in key moments. In his view, the worst scenario is pushing guests into impersonal systems when they need help, while staff are stuck in roles that don't allow them to truly guide the experience. The sherpa metaphor becomes a standard for frontline purpose. Staff are not just performing tasks; they're guiding guests through the journey, noticing pinch points, stepping in with confidence, and making the experience feel cared for, consistent, and memorable. Talley Leger covers markets after the Russell, SPX and Dow Jones hit record highs Monday. He says investors broadly anticipate earnings growth, and the latest CPI report is boosting the bull case. Bigger tax refunds could threaten to bring inflation back, but he thinks it will pass. He likes U.S. stocks but encourages investors to look at international equities and small-caps. His “bullish base case” for the SPX is 8,500. He also likes semiconductors, along with industrials and financials.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. We talk about how that fight is progressing, and about a recent stint in confinement following an issue with his cellmate.Despite the contraband not being his, David was punished — spending two months in segregation, losing his job, his cell, and now finding himself housed in a punishment wing surrounded by drugs, gangs, and violence… all at the age of 63.A raw and honest look inside one man's ongoing struggle for justice and survival behind bars. It's Die Hard in a mansion! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK we're discussing the 2005 Bruce Willis action-thriller HOSTAGE! And to break it all down we brought in special guest Jim Penola! After a fatal miscalculation in a previous siege, hostage negotiator Jeff Talley (Bruce Willis) quits the LAPD and becomes the police chief of a small, quiet, remote California town. However, Talley is thrust back into the limelight when a trio of young criminals rob the mansion of the wealthy local figure Walter Page (Kevin Pollak) and take his children hostage. When the siege goes public, the situation becomes further complicated when it is revealed that Page is a mob accountant. The mysterious criminal syndicate then pressurize Talley to retrieve a valuable item from the house, putting Talley and his own family between a rock and a hard place. Given its presence and its leading actor, it's a film positively overflowing with DIE HARD DNA…yet unlike the 1988 Christmas classic, HOSTAGE has a particularly mean-spirited and abrasive tone. To make sense of this picture, we enlisted the help of Jim Penola, a connoisseur of the “home invasion” movie, and together the guys discuss this film in the wider context of the “action-horror” subgenre, the French extremist movement, and Bruce Willis' career. They hand out awards in the DIE HARD OSCARS and pit their wits against the quizmaster in the Double Jeopardy section! You won't feel like a hostage listening to this episode!!! Talley Leger digs into the small-cap sector as investors look to avoid concentration risk in big tech. He identifies five catalysts for small-caps and thinks earnings could give them a rebound. He sees a “good argument” for rates to continue lower, calling the bond market the “tail that's wagging the dog.” Talley covers the broadening of the tech sector and believes now is the time for investors to shop in cyclical sectors – “don't overstay your welcome in defensive areas.” ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I'm a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients. Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist, discusses the critical role of the gut microbiome in overall health with Professor Nicholas Talley, a gastroenterologist. They explore how factors like diet, particularly ultra-processed foods and fiber intake, significantly impact the gut microbiome and can lead to 'leaky gut.' This condition allows inflammatory particles and bacterial factors to enter the bloodstream, contributing to chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and potentially Parkinson's.
In this episode, Doctor Warrick Bishop interviews Professor Nicholas Talley, a distinguished professor of medicine and gastroenterologist. Professor Talley explains the gut microbiome as the collection of trillions of organisms and their genes residing in our gut, which play a crucial role in maintaining health but can also contribute to disease. These organisms are acquired at birth and influenced by factors like diet, exercise, and medication throughout life. The gut microbiome impacts overall health by releasing chemicals that can affect bodily functions, even reaching the brain to influence appetite.
This is Anne's Book Club, a spotlight episode of the Long Thread Podcast where we share conversations about exciting new craft titles. This episode features three new books from Storey Publishing: The Stitched Landscape by Anna Hultin, The Handsewn Wardrobe by Louisa Owen Sonstroem, and Knitting Cowlettes by Safiyyah Talley. You'll hear a conversation with each of the authors, followed by an excerpt of some of my favorite passages. I was excited to choose each of the titles to feature, and I hope you enjoy the conversations and the books as much as I have! The Stitched Landscape: An Embroidery Field Guide to the Textures, Colors, and Lines of the Natural World Anna Hultin has so much to teach you—to stitch, of course, but mostly to see. With a background in art education and a habit of looking closely at the land around her, Anna offers concrete skills as well as encouraging prompts to develop your own relationship with where you are. Her book includes step-by-step projects, detailed instructions for common plants, and techniques for sketching, stitching, and painting your own personal landscape. Her book gently pushes embroiderers who might be reluctant to consider their work as art toward creativity, exploration, adaptation, and staking their own ground, all within the frame of an embroidery hoop. From Anna's introduction to The Stitched Landscape (https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/anna-hultin/the-stitched-landscape/9781635868456/?lens=storey?lens=storey-publishing-llc&utm_source=LongThreadMedia&utm_medium=Digital&utm_campaign=AnnaHultin_TheStitchedLandscape_Pub_RetailClicks_Storey_9781635868456&utm_content=CRAFTSHOBBIES&utm_term=Interests_Podcast_craft_GenPop): This isn't your typical embroidery book. Although it has plenty of embroidery patterns for you to follow, more than anything this book offers in-depth practice of the artistic process—from the spark of inspiration to a final piece and everything in between. I hope you will learn as much about observing the land as you do about embroidery. Whether you are picking up a needle and thread for the first time or have experience as a fiber artist, and wherever you are in the seasons of your life, my aim is to inspire you to grow in your creative practice. The projects are meant to build your skills and offer opportunities for discovery as you develop your own style and point of view. I'm excited to see how you'll take what you learn in these pages and apply it to your own observations of the world around you. **Anna Hultin* is the artist and educator behind Olander CO Embroidery. She uses needle and thread to create contemporary embroideries that explore the often overlooked beauty of the subtle textures and colors of the Colorado landscape. Anna lives with her family in Loveland, Colorado.* The Handsewn Wardrobe: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own Clothes from Patternmaking to the Finishing Stitches To make clothes that you love, says Louisa Owen Sonstroem, pick up a pencil and paper, needle and thread, and get stitching. Trained in commercial patternmaking, she knows the strengths—and limitations—of off-the-rack clothing and pattern-envelope sewing. Her new book teaches sewists to handsew clothes that seem out of reach for today's makers: hoodies, leggings, and even a denim jacket. If that sounds too time-consuming, skill-demanding, or slow, Louisa's book will surprise you. The book invites you to set aside clothing designed for someone else's body and create garments that will fit you perfectly. She calls The Handsewn Wardrobe “two books in one”: a primer on patternmaking that frees you from generic commercial patterns and a sewing book that teaches techniques for stitching garments by hand. In over 300 pages of instruction, she takes you from making a pattern for a basic tee to drafting a custom pair of jeans. For weavers and crafters with precious fabrics, handsewing lets you make the best use of precious fabric, not only by minimizing waste but also by creating garments you will wear proudly. From The Handsewn Wardrobe: (https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/louisa-owen-sonstroem/the-handsewn-wardrobe/9781635866261/?lens=storey?lens=storey-publishing-llc&utm_source=LongThreadMedia&utm_medium=Digital&utm_campaign=LouisaOwenSonstroem_TheHandsewnWardrobe_Pub_RetailClicks_Storey_9781635866261&utm_content=CRAFTSHOBBIES&utm_term=Interests_Podcast_craft_GenPop) Learning how to make patterns is one of the coolest, most transformative experiences. You can make anything! Patternmaking may have a bit of a reputation as an intimidating, difficult discipline, but it needn't be that way. There are so many more possibilities than limitations in this craft. And, by the way, no one knows everything about patternmaking—no one!—so just relax and enjoy yourself. Make note of the principles shared in this book and elsewhere, but lean into the gray areas and creative opportunities, too. You'll learn just as much by messing around with patterns as by following anyone's instructions. The more you try, the more you'll learn. It's a radical, simple act to make your own clothes by hand. The tools are few, and most are relatively inexpensive. The techniques needn't be complicated, either—with a handful of good stitches at your command, you'll be able to construct all manner of beautiful, sturdy garments. And if you approach your projects with a willingness to experiment, you'll never stop learning. Empowerment, accessibility, mental stimulation, endless opportunities for growth, and a set of amazing clothes—what's not to love? **Louisa Owen Sonstroem* studied design and patternmaking at Fashion Institute of Technology. She works in technical design and patternmaking and teaches hand sewing and patternmaking classes. She also started Patternmaking in Public Places (PIPP), an outreach project to democratize access to patternmaking skills. Louisa lives in Connecticut with her family, in a house filled with board books, dog beds, and lots of fabric.* Knitting Cowlettes: Clever Techniques for Making Custom Mini-Cowls to Elevate Any Outfit Innovative knitter Safiyyah Talley's first book, Knit 2 Socks in 1, offered a clever new way of knitting socks. In her new book, she offers a fresh look at neckwear with a collection of cowlettes—wearable cowl/shawl hybrids. Simple and versatile, Safiyyah's cowlettes beckon you to cast on. From Safiyyah's introduction to Knitting Cowlettes: (https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/safiyyah-talley/knitting-cowlettes/9781635868012/?lens=storey?lens=storey-publishing-llc&utm_source=LongThreadMedia&utm_medium=Digital&utm_campaign=SafiyyahTalley_KnittingCowlettes_Pub_RetailClicks_Storey_9781635868012&utm_content=CRAFTSHOBBIES&utm_term=Interests_Podcast_craft_GenPop) I like to gift cowlettes because they are quick, gender neutral, size inclusive, and very useful. There are just so many scenarios that call for one that I even gift them to myself. Wake up to a chill in the air? Pop on a cowlette. Want to dress up an outfit? Pop on a cowlette. Need to show off a knitted item at the knitting convention, and it's a very hot and crowded July day? Say it with me now: “Pop on a cowlette!” You might be wondering, “What exactly is a cowlette?” Cowlette is a term created by innovative knitwear designer Carina Spencer and it is the lovechild of a cowl—a circular scarf—and a shawlette, or a small shawl. Cowlettes have a similar construction to a shawl, but with the wearability of a cowl. Shawls tend to slip and slide when worn, unless secured in some way with a knot or a shawl pin. Cowlettes look like shawls, but they are knit in the round, so the wearer doesn't have to worry about them falling off. Just like shawls, cowlettes are first worked flat from the top down. Stitches are added in the form of increases until the work is large enough to fit comfortably around the wearer's neck. The cowlette is then joined in the round and worked to the desired size and length. When searching online for cowlette patterns, you may find them under “cowls” or “shawls,” because it is a fairly new knitting term. But the very best part of making cowlettes is how customizable they are. With the help of this book, you can easily design your own. You can control the difficulty, size, yarn amount, and gauge with very little prep and only as much math as you wish! It is the perfect project for all knitters, from beginner to expert. All you need to get started is a ball of yarn, circular knitting needles, and a sense of adventure. **Safiyyah Talley* is the author of* Knit 2 Socks in 1 and creator of the popular blog The Drunk Knitter.
