"The Boys" is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Amazon Prime Video. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals, referred to as "Supes," who often abuse their powers for personal gain and work for a powerful company, Vought International, that ensures the general public views them as heroes. The story focuses on Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), a young electronics clerk, and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), a former SAS and CIA operative, who work together with the rest of the Boys against "The Seven," Vought's premier superhero team, led by the power-hungry Homelander (Antony Starr). The series also stars Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Elisabeth Shue, Colby Minifie, Aya Cash, Claudia Doumit, Jensen Ackles, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Daveed Diggs. The fifth and final season premiered on April 8th and drew a mixed response from fans and critics, though the show has been an undisputed success, with a prequel series, "Vought Rising," set to premiere in 2027. Overall, the show was praised for its performances, particularly Antony Starr, visuals, satirical themes, and action sequences. The series has won four awards from 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2021, and has won seven Critics' Choice Super Awards and six Astra TV Awards. Showrunner, Executive Producer, and Writer Eric Kripke was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the hit series, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the show, which is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy! Garth discusses his comics Tankies originally published by Battle in The UK, and by Dead Reckoning in the US
From Feb, Barth talks about Babs from Ahoy Comics, his savage sword-and-sorcery riff that weaponizes absurdity, blood, and pitch-black humor to skewer genre clichés while still delivering the kind of brutal action Ennis fans crave. It's funny, ferocious, and very deliberately unserious, until it suddenly isn't.From there, we shift gears into war stories, both old and new. Ennis talks about his long-running love affair with Johnny Red, the WWI and WWII aerial combat hero he's revived through graphic novels with a historian's respect and a storyteller's bite. We also break down Battle Action, the modern revival of the classic British war anthology, and why those stripped-down, morally thorny combat tales still matter. Finally, Garth looks ahead to what's coming next, teasing new projects and directions slated for 2026, proof that he's nowhere near done challenging readers, genres, or expectations.

We sit down with Garth Ennis for a wide-ranging conversation that blends career reflection with a deep dive into Babs: Black Road South. Garth discusses his early discovery of comics and how his 2000 AD roots continue to shape his storytelling instincts, particularly his emphasis on clarity, character, and structure. He reflects on long-running themes in his work—war fiction, flawed antiheroes, and the balance between satire and humanism—while also addressing how projects like The Boys have evolved beyond their original context. Turning to Babs, Ennis unpacks his take on sword-and-sorcery, the appeal of a deeply flawed protagonist, and the tonal shift in Black Road South toward a more character-focused narrative. He also highlights his ongoing collaboration with Jacen Burrows, the role of humor in grounding the series' darker elements, and what lies ahead for Babs and beyond. In this episode, we dive into one of the most controversial and disturbing comics ever published — Crossed by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows.Originally released in 2008, Crossed presents a brutal vision of societal collapse where a mysterious contagion strips humanity of all restraint, turning the infected into sadistic killers marked by the red cross across their faces. This episode explores the entire first volume (Issues 0–9), breaking down the story arc, the major characters, and the themes that make the series both fascinating and deeply unsettling. We follow Stan, Cindy, and a small group of survivors as they attempt to navigate a world where civilization has collapsed almost overnight. Along the way we examine the evolution of the Crossed themselves, the psychological toll on survivors, and the moral compromises that arise when survival becomes the only priority. We also explore how Crossed reflects real-world anxieties, including themes of societal fragility and disaster response — ideas that Garth Ennis has cited as inspiration following events like Hurricane Katrina.Content warning: This series contains extreme violence and disturbing subject matter. Listener discretion is advised. If you're a fan of horror comics or want to understand why Crossed remains one of the most talked-about graphic novels in modern horror, this episode provides a full breakdown of the first run of the series.Send us a message (I'm not able to reply)Support the showPage Chewing Blog Page Chewing Forum Film Chewing PodcastSpeculative Speculations Podcast Support the podcast via PayPal Support the show by using our Amazon Affiliate linkJoin Riverside.fm Co-Hosts: Jarrod Varsha Chris Jose Carl D.

The gloves removed hit the floor like lead, puncturing lungs, bleeding red, untold bodies left for dead. All this, despite the concussive rounds, remained unsaid, silent infrared exploding heads. The gloves removed hit the floor. The world changed forevermore. "Roth, don't get sentimental on me, okay?"

[rating: 2.5/5] DISCUSSION BATMAN AND ETRIGAN Etrigan first appeared in The Demon #1 (September 1972) and was created by Jack Kirby. He created him at the behest of DC, who saw it as likely to be more commercially successful than the Fourth World and cancelled New Gods and Forever People to facilitate work on the new title. According to Evanier, Kirby had no interest in horror comics, but created Mark Etrigan in response to DC's demand for a horror character. Kirby was annoyed that Etrigan's popularity forced him to abandon the Fourth World titles before he was done with them. Etrigan returned for a four-issue miniseries in 1987, written and illustrated by Matt Wagner. Alan Grant followed this with an Etrigan feature in Action Comics Weekly #636-641 and a second ongoing title in 1990. The 1990 series lasted 58 issues, two Annuals and one #0 issue. Garth Ennis took over the title beginning with issue #40. Ennis' run included the first appearance of his character Hitman. This series was followed by a miniseries, Driven Out. Following this, John Byrne's Blood of the Demon lasted 17 issues, and ignored much of the continuity that took place after Kirby's initial run. While his first monthly comic book series was short-lived, and his second was canceled after five years, Etrigan remains a popular supporting character with occasional additional miniseries. Series in which Etrigan has appeared include Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, Kevin Smith's Green Arrow and Batman: The Widening Gyre, Garth Ennis's Hitman, and Cosmic Odyssey by Jim Starlin and Mike Mignola.
