On this episode of the Jered Williams Show, Jered interviews Trent Lowenstein about simulation theory as a practical business framework, where owners act as architects in "god Mode" designing winning systems for their teams rather than playing as passive participants. They discuss character types like NPCs, AFK players, and Player One, along with the core traits of empathy, curiosity, and introspection that drive authentic sales and leadership. Trent shares real-world examples from the trades, including price books with relevant options, membership models for retention, and treating the dispatch board like a strategic game. The conversation also covers leading versus lagging indicators, non-zero-sum outcomes, and preparing for future automation while maintaining human-centered approaches.
Magazines évoqués : Tilt, Nintendo Player, Player One, Console Plus, Joystick, Jeux Vidéo Magazine, Kids Mania, Astuce Mania, Pocket Magazine, Game Test, Officiel PlayStation Magazine, PlayStation 2 Magazine, Xbox Magazine (MOX), Nintendo Magazine, IG Mag, Retro Gamer Collection, Canard PC, Pix'n Love, JV Le Mag, Video Gamer Retro Éditeurs/Sites évoqués : Micromania (soluces), Jeuxvideo.com, GameKult, Gameblog, Third Éditions Intervenants : Ace Bunny, HKR, Mugen, Brad, PedroMontage et mixage : Ace_BunnyTechnique, diffusion et hébergement : Mugen_Pascal

We're a few days late, but if it means anything to you, dear listener, it made me haul a lot of my music equipment up to my office and I am definitely going to try and do more original music for my episodes now! Welcome to another one-player one-shot where I play games I have been dying to get to the table all by myself. This time it's another by one of my favorite designers in the TTRPG community, Midnight Melodies by Cezar Capacle. In Midnight Melodies, you play as a jazz pianist confronted by the Grim Reaper themself after a night out playing, but there's a catch - you're immune to their touch. Instead, they recruit you for the Department of Unauthorized Deaths to investigate strange, unsanctioned deaths while the big Death works out what to do with you. Now, every now and again, a name will appear in the tip jar at the end of the night, and you must get to the bottom of the unnatural death. In this episode I play Riley Hawkins, member of the big jazz band The Eclipse, as he goes unauthorized death detective on the case of an academic counselor, Bradley Keats. It gets wild. Go get Cezar's games, they're all bangers, you can't go wrong! ----more---- Join the DMs After Dark Discord channel! CUJO is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms. Episodes drop every other week, but if you want the full experience — including access to our CUJOPLEX Discord and reading group meetings — we recommend signing up for a paid subscription.Paid subscribers also get access to The Weather Report, a monthly episode series where we take stock of where the cultural winds are blowing and tell you what's rained into our brains. On our latest installment, we chat with Billboard editor Katie Bain, author of a new history of Coachella, about what the festival's 2026 line-up tells us about where culture is headed, the rise of anti-sellout discourse, and the AI industry's nostalgic, artisanal rebrand. Since our last episode, something historic happened: Zohran Kwame Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, marking the American left's most significant electoral victory since the Bernie movement took off in the 2010s. While his team will credit his win to bold, populist economic policies, there's no denying another factor at play: Zohran's extraordinary command of images. He grew up in a film-director household, rapped as Young Cardamom before pivoting to politics, and hired a crew of indie filmmakers to create a video campaign that unfolded like a documentary love letter to the NYC of halal carts, bodega cats, and ordinary working people. Zohran's media fluency is also why people are calling him the Left's answer to Trump. Which all raises some big questions: Is politics in the information economy becoming indistinguishable from theatrical world-building? And what does that mean for our offline lives? This week's guest, writer and artist Gideon Jacobs, has thought about these questions for years. A former creative director at Magnum Photos, child actor, and native New Yorker, Gideon has explored our cultural relationship to images in outlets like The New Yorker, The New York Times, Artforum, and Los Angeles Review of Books, for whom he penned an excellent piece earlier this year called “Player One and Main Character,” which contends that political reality, post-Trump and post-Musk, is beginning to bend to the rules of fiction. We talk about the aesthetic politics of the Zohran campaign and what it tells us about what successful counter-programming to MAGA's vision of America might look like. We also discuss what Gideon's study of the role of images in ancient cultures and religions can tell us about navigating the image world of the present, how the rise of populism (on both the left and the right) is inextricable from our current technological moment, and whether Zohran's victory marks the start of a political future more grounded in material conditions—or the next phase of the image arms race.Follow Gideon on InstagramRead Gideon:“Player One and Main Character” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“Trump l'Oeil” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“Thou shalt not make images—but what if AI does?” (Document Journal)“Aliens” (The Drift)Additional reading:“Selling Zohran” by Corey Atad (Defector) This is a public episode. Can't forget to do a solo one-shot for spooky month, so here is my one-player one-shot experience of Spellbook by DValeris a.k.a. Edaureen Muhamad Nor! This game is based on a familiar game from last year's holiday one-shots, Bucket Of Bolts by Jason Price and uses the Lost & Found SRD to simulate the life of a sentient spellbook that is past down through the hands of witches over three Acts. It was a very fun session and I fully admit I fall hard into stereotypical Rene tropes (sorry not sorry). Definitely give this and more of Edaureen's games a look! Also, shout out and check out friend of the show C.R. Rowenson's new LitRPG book Spawn Point, Book 1 of the New Eternity series! It's time for another one-player one-shot! The Librarian's Apprentice is a solo game I've had near the top of my list to play for a LONG time, and it's a shame it's taken me so long to get this to the table. This is a game by friend of the channel Daniel Bronson-Lowe, a.k.a. Almost Bedtime Theater who you may remember from the Tabletop Tutorial episode of i'm sorry did you say street magic? where we built a city within this game's infinite library together on this podcast! This is a game about playing a Librarian-to-be in an infinite library and working your way through its halls to find documents and uncover truths that will prove you worthy of the title Librarian. It is full of mystery, amazing oracles, prompts, and is so easy to play thanks to its elegant design. Not only that, the presentation of this game is so beautiful, coming in a package that unfolds into trifold pamphlets with bookmark character sheets, a library card, and the recently published Song of the Scryptwyrm expansion mystery adds even more amazing art through little hidden details and messages in the text. I can't recommend this game enough. For this one-player one-shot, we follow apprentice librarian Corbyn on his first document retrieval assignment, slowly uncovering information about the strange inhabitants of the library known as the gnosiphages, a.k.a. booklickers. ----more---- Join the DMs After Dark Discord channel! Let's do another one-player one-shot! This time it's BOW by the design duo (and team at) Hatchlings Games! BOW is a solo journaling game that uses the Carta SRD by Peach Garden Games, much like Hatchlings' other solo game Dragon Dowser (which you can hear me play in the backlog!). In BOW, you play a Praeloran diver going out in an annual competition known as The Shoaling, a grueling sailing race between strong candidates on the hunt for relics to bring back to their city and make it to their marker and back first. In this one-shot, I play the underdog Dominic Eisenia, a short, underdeveloped youth going out for the Shoaling against much more physically capable rivals, but he has an edge in his cleverness and determination. Can he make it to his Marker and find any interesting relics? Will Dominic be crowned champion of this year's Shoaling?! ----more---- Join the DMs After Dark Discord channel! Time for another one-player one-shot! This is Two-Hand Path, a modern roll-and-write dungeon crawler by Mikey Hamm, designer of Slugblaster. In Two-Hand Path you play a mage searching the cursed ruins of a post-fall city for loot and power after a supernatural war left everything destroyed. The mechanics use Yahtzee-style combinations with a full set of polyhedral dice, sending you through very simple but deadly dungeons with time pressure and limited HP before you "surge," after which every roll is a gamble for points and power. The character sheet is just your two hands (or a drawing of two hands, if you're a coward) which you'll cover in tattoos, rings, scars, and more as you shape your spells and unleash your magic against the remnants of the world. In this episode, we sit down with Alice, who shares her compelling and heart-wrenching journey from growing up in a family with a special needs brother to navigating a marriage marked by narcissism, selfishness, and infidelity. Alice's story sheds light on the emotional toll of being in a relationship where one partner refuses to grow up, leaving the other to shoulder the weight of responsibility.Alice opens up about her childhood, where her family's focus was largely on her brother, leaving her feeling isolated and socially limited. As an escape, she turned to online gaming, where she met the man who would eventually become her husband. From the start, his immaturity and extreme selfishness were apparent, but Alice was determined to make things work.Throughout their marriage, Alice worked tirelessly to support their small family, balancing school, housework, and financial responsibilities. Happy Merry & hope your holidays are going wonderfully cozy, easy, and not at all stressful. In this Christmas Eve solo holiday special, I'm reskinning Jack Harrison a.k.a. Mousehole Press' Bucket of Bolts from a futuristic spaceship POV experience to inhabiting the iconic sleigh of St. Nicholas himself, instead playing as the sleigh for the many Santas throughout the centuries. It's short, simple, and fun, but definitely made me think about how I would run this game if I was playing in a sci-fi game, especially because it opens up such interesting ideas for sentient ships, AI co-pilots, and just fleshing out the story of an oft-overlooked member of any spacefaring party - the ship itself. Other contributors to Bucket of Bolts whose tables I used included: Riley Rethal Matt Sanders a.k.a. Sealed Library Anna Blackwell a.k.a. Blackwell Games ----more---- Friend of the show Raso & I just released a game called MECH, a Carved by RUNE hack of GilaRPGs' incredible RUNE & REAP games, which I've played on this channel. It's a solo TTRPG with tactical combat where you pilot a MECH against Dormants - apocalyptic threats to humanity. Can you remember the Promise and pledge it or beat back the kaiju to buy the city more time? More will be coming out for MECH in 2025! I made a Ko-Fi if you feel absurdly generous and want to help cover podcast hosting costs & all the upkeep. I'm still working on whether I want to offer anything special over there or just give my extreme gratitude (maybe some stickers or something in the mail) to those who donate, but no pressure whatsoever :) Where to Follow Rene Plays Games: LinkTree | BlueSky | Threads | Instagram | Facebook | DMs After Dark email: RenePlaysGamesPod@gmail.com Music in the Episode: Theme Song written & produced by Dan Pomfret | @danfrombothbands Bucket of Bolts soundtrack by Mousehole Press
