In the second part of the Loving Literature series Jimmy Bowens and Erini Christopoulos discuss the literature that had the biggest impact on their teenage years. For Jimmy he continued to be drawn to the dark and mysterious pull of the gothic genre. For Erini the dystopian genre stirred her own notion of social justice and political awareness.  Get ready for some nostalgia because listening to this podcast will have you looking back fondly to your own teenage years and the literature that had an impact on you and perhaps the path you followed into your adult years.

Do you ever wonder how abuse has become such an epidemic? The statistics are getting worse instead of better. In this episode, we highlight 5 categories of people who should be the best trained to recognize and prevent abuse, including doctors and nurses, yet either lack adequate training or have no training at all. There is no uniform training or requirements for training in these fields, even though abuse is still rampant. What are some other areas that we didn't mention? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter Christian McBride is one of the most widely recorded bass players in jazz. He’s been on more than 300 albums as a sideman, and has won six Grammys. This year alone, he’s put out three major projects. In February, he released The Movement Revisited, a large-scale project that paints sonic portraits of Black political and cultural icons Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali and Barack Obama, mixing orchestral jazz with narration. It was first put together in 1998, covering just the first four people, and then revised a decade later, adding a fifth section about Obama and generally rewriting the whole piece. In July, he appeared on saxophonist Joshua Redman’s album RoundAgain, with Brad Mehldau on piano and Brian Blade on drums. This was the same set of players who made Redman’s album MoodSwing in 1994, which I remember was one of the first jazz albums I bought by a young musician; before that, I was mostly buying classic old albums by players who were either dead or long past their prime. And finally, he made For Jimmy, Wes And Oliver, a big band album with guests Joey DeFrancesco on organ and Mark Whitfield on guitar, which is coming out this week. Obviously, a guy like McBride, who’s played with basically everyone, has a million stories to tell. I particularly wanted to ask him about one show that I saw him at, which was Sonny Rollins’ 80th birthday concert at the Beacon Theatre 10 years ago, where they were joined by Ornette Coleman and Roy Haynes. And believe me, he has stories about Rollins. And beyond making music and talking about music, he’s also the artistic director for the Newport Jazz Festival, and he his wife run a jazz program for kids in New Jersey, Jazz House Kids, so we talk about how that’s been impacted by COVID-19 and what they see as the future of the program and of jazz education. Something else interesting is that he’s an interviewer himself – he hosts a radio show where he talks to other jazz musicians. So we talk a little bit about that, too. How different are Bitcoin businesses? The Cambrian SV Debate

The recent Cambrian SV Bootcamp in Lisbon brought together about 30 developers and entrepreneurs from around the world. As well as writing code to make their businesses more interoperable, there was time for wider discussion, some of which took place in two debates where issues were aired in front of the rest of the attendees. The first of those debates makes up this week’s CoinGeek Conversations podcast. It’s between Ryan X. Charles of Money Button and Jimmy Odom of Bittboard (right and left, above). Their subject: how different are Bitcoin businesses from any other kind? For Jimmy, Bitcoin businesses are different because of their being able to link data and money: “I think that this is the first time that we've had the ability in human history to truly associate the value of information. Before, there would always be guardrails or gatekeepers or intermediaries who would assign the value of information. But Bitcoin being the open protocol that it is, gives not only the ability to assign that value, but to evenly distribute the information behind the assigning of that value.”Ryan was less inclined to see Bitcoin businesses as fundamentally different because “it's actually the same rules of business and the same rules of economics that it's always been”. He warned that where Bitcoin entrepreneurs (or those in the wider crypto sector) had seen themselves as outside of the ordinary rules of business, it had resulted in dodgy ICOs and scams and that “some of those people have actually gone to prison”.Although the tech giants have come in for plenty of criticism from the crypto world and elsewhere, Ryan said that “although I think that Google and Facebook has done a lot of things wrong, a lot of businesses in crypto have done things way worse than Google and Facebook, at least on a smaller scale.”For Jimmy, “neither Google nor Facebook were ever propositioning themselves as moral standard bearers”. Ryan saw the basic problem as being that they “sort of slyly cover up some of the things that they're doing ...I think they don't quite get the morality right. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that they can continue with business models that are ultimately, I think - I hate to be extreme - but I think will ultimately fail. They can't just sell other people's private data and have that be the way things work forever”.Jimmy sees Bitcoin as more like a natural phenomenon than an ingenious piece of technology, describing it as “this really fascinating discovery - because I don't think it was invented”. The morality that Bitcoin promotes through the way it works relates to his strong Christian faith, with Bitcoin and Christian morality in sync and relating to “the higher power”. More than once in the debate, Ryan said that he wanted to “both agree and disagree” with Jimmy’s view, but he went along with the idea that Bitcoin promotes better behaviour by businesses: “I think it actually does encourage a better morality because companies basically have to be more transparent and accountable than they used to be. So it encourages the right thing.”

How do you house hack your way to financial freedom with hardly any money down? How do you build a best-in-class property management company? What is the best day to do a home inspection? What does it mean to be #rentready? Jimmy Murray has all the answers and he is ready to share them with your podcast listeners today.  Over the past ten years, Jimmy’s multifamily real estate investments have blossomed into a successful property management company, Lyon Property Management Group. An investor himself, Jimmy intimately understands the needs of an investor landlord. And that’s why Lyon Property Management is tailored to the multifamily investor.   Jimmy is also an investor educator along with Lyon Property Group co-founder Frank Patalano. Jimmy and Frank host a podcast called The Cashflow Kings where they have been known to pass out free golden nuggets of real estate wisdom.  Podcast Highlights   Who is Jimmy Murray?    Jimmy Murray was always a thoughtful kid but he also had an entrepreneurial tilt. Real estate didn’t come along in Jimmy’s life until 8th grade when he wrote a letter to himself where he imagined what real estate and stocks he owned by the time he was finished high school. Jimmy tends to over analyze everything, which fits perfectly with his INTJ Myers-Briggs result.   Acorn Theory   Jimmy Murray recently learned about Acorn Theory, where we all start as a small acorn with a guide that helps us grow into a massive oak tree. Sometimes it takes longer to accomplish that, but your goal should always be to realize your oak tree potential. For Jimmy, he didn’t know what the path was that he would take, but he knew that Real Estate was going to be the shape of things. It doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you finish. Jimmy’s degree which helped him land a job at a well respected financial firm came from Ohio State University, but he started off in a local community college. His original strategy was to get a job on Wall Street, make a pile of money, and then invest in real estate but it didn’t work out that way. Instead, he found himself failing the CFA exam and being forced to decide whether to invest more time and money in passing the test, or just jumping into real estate and buying his first multifamily property.  Small, daily habits are the foundation for long term success. Progress happens a little bit each day, your goal shouldn’t be to get there immediately. Failures are the stepping stones on your way to success. Sometimes your closest mentors will tell you not to pursue your dream goals, but if you believe in it enough you should be willing to chase what you want.   Is there anything you wanted someone to say to you when you were starting off?   Not everyone is going to believe in your vision along the way, but as long as you do, no one else has to. Jimmy wouldn’t change the way things played out when he decided to get into real estate.   Why did you go into property management?   When Jimmy Murray bought his first property, he also started wholesaling with the belief that wholesaling would be the way he was going to escape his cubicle. Despite being an

Is The American Dream Still Alive? The American Dream is a term we are all familiar with, but what does it mean? In some circles it could have a negative connotation and the American Dream definition has certainly changed over the years. However, as Jimmy so eloquently puts it in this episode, The American Dream is different for everyone. For Jimmy, who grew up a young boy in a poor village in Kenya, where some nights he didn't have food - "a 2 bedroom apartment would be an American Dream accomplished." American Dream Definition In this episode of Out Of The Gutter, Jimmy and Jessica Olang, Lehigh Valley PA Franchisees, not only tell Jimmy's story but they also depict their entire journey from when they first met, to their now successful semi-passive business. Jimmy defines the standard "cliche" American Dream, but also explains what his is, and why he believes they've surpassed it "a million times over."If you are lacking inspiration or are fearful to start that business you've always been dreaming of, you do not want to miss this episode. Summary: In this week’s episode of the MegaMarketer Coachcast, hosts Justin Jacob and Jimmy Hiller talk about a problem that is plaguing the industry. Hiring is something that every business struggles with but Jimmy has some unique advice that will make it easier for you to find the right people for business. Key Lessons Learned: The Origins of Hiller Jimmy had his first job as a senior in highschool pumping gas but he didn’t have a lot of direction in his life. His father guided him to become a plumber and after working for several years and getting his Master’s licence went into business for himself. There are three things that Jimmy attributes his success to. Jimmy knew he always wanted to be a business owner and it’s important to know what you want in the first place. Jimmy was also willing to do whatever it takes to make his business successful. That meant going out and learning the things you don’t know right now. The third element of success is tenacity. The world will knock you down and you have to make the decision to get back and move forward with your life if you want to succeed. In terms of daily struggles, finding good people is the ever present and greatest challenge to building a great business. Hiring The Right Team Members  Early on Jimmy had relationships with everyone that worked for him, but now that his business is so large that’s not really possible. Now he lays the foundation for the kinds of people they are looking for within the business. The first thing they look for is a good attitude. Are they going to show up and be happy to work there, as well as put in a good effort. Next they look for skill, but they’ve got the training and knowledge so if the person has the right attitude Jimmy’s business can impart the skills. If you effort, attitude, and skill on a foundation of integrity then you have what Jimmy calls the “perfect picture of an employee”. When hiring people it’s important to have an established and reliable process. For Jimmy that includes drug testing and background checks. The Zig Ziglar Connection One of Zig Zigler’s more famous quotes is “You can have everything in life you want, if you help other people get what they want.” Jimmy listened to Zig Zigler for many years, he was actually fortunate enough to become Zigler Legacy certified and can now teach Zig Zigler’s methods.  When a customer calls you they want to solve their problem. Your business needs the revenue the customer has to keep the business going. The employee that services that customer wants to provide for their family or rise in the organization. As the business owner, it’s your job to help them achieve those goals. Keeping The Hiring Pipeline Full There is a shortage of people in the industry so looking for the right pool to find people is crucial. For Jimmy one of the best places to look is the military. The discipline that the military instills aligns very well with working in the trades. Jimmy has developed a close relationship with the nearby military base and offers a lot of people coming out of the military employment opportunities. Jimmy’s business developed a training program that has trained over 470 soldiers and 94% of them have found a job in the trade. Jimmy has employees that have worked for him from anywhere to 18 years to just six months. His business is hiring anywhere from 10 to 15 per month depending on the market they’re in. If you’re in a smaller population area, the first thing to realize is that there are qualified people out there. There are kids who are graduating from highschool that want to get into a trade but just don’t know what the path is. Getting someone in the business when they are younger gives you the opportunity to train them exactly the way you want to and gives them a great foothold in the industry. Hiring employees is an investment, you have to make sure you are finding the right individuals. You have to put in the work to find them but they are out there. Increasing Interest In The Trades The industry needs to reach out to highschool guidance counsellors if they want to increase interest in the trades. They are realizing that college is not the best answer for every student. If you have any kind of training in the trades, you can find a job somewhere. You have to show up and get in front of the guidance counsellors and they will get you in front of the students. Highschool teachers want their students to be successful and the trades are a great way for people to build a successful life. The Smart Contractor vs The Wise Contractor The smart contractor works hard and learns from his mistakes and never makes those mistakes again. The wise contractor finds somebody who has been where they want to go and then never makes those mistakes.  Mentors can open your eyes to a world of opportunity that you didn’t even realize existed.   There’s a common assumption that we have to physically meet with our clients to service them, but moving past that paradigm can give us the freedom we crave. How did our guest build a real estate business that has allowed him to travel to dozens of countries each year? How does he keep his business functional and thriving while he is away from the office? On this episode, Jimmy Rex shares how he has managed to gain freedom and autonomy while running a successful real estate business and serving his team at the highest level.   3 Things We Learned From This Episode   How to be an effective agent even as you are away from the office (12:35 - 13:58) They say the average buyer takes 34 hours, but that’s not true if you do it the right way. For Jimmy, the average buyer was taking 2 hours. You don’t have to see the house to list it, and you can take a listing over the phone. With the right systems and expertise, you can be effective agent even while working remotely.   Why traveling can boost your business and help you to be laser focused (27:07 - 29:21) There are great opportunities that can come from traveling with groups of people and being part of their network. Jimmy isn’t just out playing— he’s making meaningful connections. You can build relationships this way that will strengthen your database and create a pipeline of business.   How to be valuable to other successful people and stand out to them (31:06 - 34:20) Successful people are dying for relationships with people who aren’t trying to anything out of them. Learn to add value to their lives, connect them with people they want to be around, give them answers to the questions they have, and be a resource.   In The E-Myth, entrepreneurs are challenged to ask themselves how they would run their business if they were gone for an extended period of time. Jimmy spent 120 days travelling in 2018, and his business still managed to function and thrive. Most agents will never implement this because they can’t move past the idea that can serve clients without having to meet them physically. By doing things he wants to do, hanging out with his network, and having awesome experiences, he has built a successful real estate business. It’s the life so many of us talk about but very few of us get there. If we trust our people, build the right systems and give value, we can achieve it.

It's the inaugural episode of Go Fact Yourself!  Hosts J. Keith van Straaten and Helen Hong test whether comedians Jimmy Pardo ("Never Not Funny") and Beth Littleford ("Dog with a Blog")  are as smart as they think they are about topics they love. For Jimmy, it's 1980s music, the band Chicago and Post-90s Chicago White Sox, while Beth professes in-depth knowledge of old school funk music, artificial sweeteners and therapy. Beth and Jimmy may say they know about these subjects, but DO they? To find out, J. Keith and Helen enlist the help of actual experts, and pepper them with fascinating, but useless, trivia questions about things they might know and things they should know along the way.    Go Fact Yourself was devised by Jim Newman and J. Keith van Straaten, and produced in collaboration with Maximum Fun. The show is recorded at the Angel City Brewery in downtown Los Angeles.     David McKeever is the Live Sound Engineer. Maximum Fun's Senior Producer is Laura Swisher. The show is edited by Christian Duenas.
