Send us a textEpisode 013 Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer Tom Scott joins the Aerophone Academy to share his extraordinary musical journey from clarinet player to pioneering wind controller artist. With 13 Grammy nominations, 3 Grammy awards, and appearances on over 2,000 recordings, Scott's unmistakable sound has defined popular music across multiple decades.Scott takes us through his remarkable career path, beginning with his early musical influences from his father, a music director at NBC Radio during World War II. His professional journey started at just 14 years old, playing $15 gigs at country clubs – experiences that taught him valuable lessons about serving the music rather than his ego. "Don't try to insert your own personal opinion about how you feel about a certain tune. Just play the damn thing with as much feeling as you can muster."The conversation explores Scott's groundbreaking work with the Lyricon, the world's first commercially available wind synthesizer. We hear fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about his iconic wind controller solos on hits like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," Captain & Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time," Dan Fogelberg's "Heart Hotels," and Steely Dan's "Peg." These recordings revolutionized how electronic instruments could be integrated into popular music, bringing unprecedented expressiveness to synthesized sounds.Scott's masterful horn arrangements for Steely Dan's "Aja" album receive special attention, revealing his sophisticated approach to orchestration. "I'm going to write this like it's an Oliver Nelson arrangement," he explains, describing how he transformed simple chord structures into rich, complex voicings that enhanced these iconic recordings.Whether discussing his evolution through different wind controller technologies or sharing wisdom about musical restraint ("less is more very often"), Scott's insights offer invaluable perspectives for musicians at every level. This conversation celebrates not just technological innovation but the enduring importance of musicality in an increasingly electronic landscape.Subscribe now and join us next episode for part two of our conversation with this legendary musical innovator! If you'd like to send us a question for an upcoming episode, please email us at info@aerophoneacademy.comOr leave us a voice message that we can include in the podcast here. For more information about Matt, visit www.patchmanmusic.comFor great Aerophone courses, visit www.isax.academy

TRACKS 1-Blues For D.P. (Ron Carter) 2-Just Enough (Herbie Hancock) 3-French Connections (Igor Butman) 4-Something Borrowed, Something Blue (Tommy Flanagan) 5-Lullaby For Shana Bly (Grover Washington Jr.) 6-Stolen Moments (Oliver Nelson) 7-In a Sentimental Mood (Duke Ellington, Manny Kurtz, Irving Mills) 8-Stella by Starlight (Victor Young, Ned Washington) CREDITS Grover Washington Jr. – soprano saxophone (1, 6, 8), tenor saxophone (2–5), alto saxophone (7) Igor Butman – tenor saxophone (3, 6, 8) Herbie Hancock – grand piano (1, 2, 5) James "Sid" Simmons – grand piano (3, 6, 8) Tommy Flanagan – grand piano (4, 7) Richard Lee Steacker – guitars (3, 6) Ron Carter – double bass (1, 2, 5) Gerald Veasley – 5-string electric bass (3, 6, 8) Grady Tate – drums (1) Marvin "Smitty" Smith – drums (1, 2, 5) Darryl Washington – drums (3, 6, 8) Miguel Fuentes – percussion (3, 6, 8)

John Gross talks about his origins in music, including the first time he heard Charlie Parker, and his long career playing with Shelly Manne, Oliver Nelson, Clare Fischer: just the tip of the iceberg. John is a saxophonist originally from Los Angeles who lived in Portland, Oregon from 1990 to 2016, after which he moved to Vancouver. He shares his thoughts on the artistic process, the duty you have in being a member of a musical community, and how he thinks he'll “never get it right”. On this episode, Marc talks with Jonathan Grasse, author of “Jazz Revolutionary: The Life and Music of Eric Dolphy,” due out on October 15. It's a thorough history of the legendary jazz multi-instrumentalist, who produced an impressive body of work both on his own and in groups led by John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Oliver Nelson, and many more, before his tragic death in 1964 at age 36. Grasse crafts the first truly comprehensive biography of Dolphy by tracing nearly every step of his music career, as well as delving deep into the releases he appeared on. As he writes, “Jazz Revolutionary approaches the artist's recordings as essential cultured artifacts, as primary texts..[Dophy had] a warrior-monk dedication to exploring diverse musical resources beyond what the extant jazz vocabulary provided.”We hope you enjoy Marcs conversation with Jonathon Grasse!

Barbara Bruckmüller is a composer and jazz pianist born in Vienna. She was influenced by the sounds of Hollywood Jazz, from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. She studied piano early on for seven years, but it took time for her to discover her passion for jazz. She studied jazz piano with Paul Urbanek at the Gustav Mahler Conservatory in Vienna, in 2004. Barbara's inspiration and role models lie in the great Big Band leaders and composers Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Gil Evans, Joe Henderson, and Maria Schneider. In 2009, she founded her Big Band to capture the sound and dynamic energy of the swing bands and dance orchestras of the past that fascinated her since childhood and served as the foundation for her own musical vision. Her debut album Barbara Bruckmüller Big Band released in 2013, with original compositions, was awarded the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Two years later, she released her second album, in tribute to her late mother and her hometown of Vienna, in which she arranged traditional Viennese songs for the Big Band and infused them with a fresh swing. Barbara is currently working on her next album project, THREE VIEWS OF A MUSICAL PIECE: A Chain of Moments – Suite in Five Movement with Cuban pianist and composer Aruán Ortiz, scheduled for Fall 2024. http://barbarabruckmueller.com http://wijsf.org

Alto saxophonist Frank Strozier remains one of the great underrated masters of his horn. He was born in Memphis and came up with his friends, George Coleman, Harold Mabern, and the great Booker Little. After Memphis he moved to Chicago and attained several university degrees and began building his reputation as a prime voice on the alto. He later moved to New York and played with many important people like Miles Davis and drummer Roy Haynes. Later moving to Los Angeles he worked in the studios and performed Jazz with Oliver Nelson's Band and Shelly Manne's groups among others. He returned to New York in 1973 and continued to record under his name and appear as a sideman until the mid-80's when he stopped playing the saxophone and flute and did some gigs playing piano, . He also taught ischool until he retired. Strozier is still alive. He was born in Memphis on June 13,1937 and as of now he's be 86. We'll hear him in 4 extended pieces recorded in January 1976 in concert at the Ramada Inn inn Schenectedy, New York than have never been heard on any commercial recordings. This is Frank at his unfettered best with Frank Stagnitta on piano, Frank Tate on bass and Larry Jackson on drums. Look out! Frank Strozier our Jazz Feature artist tonight!

Playlist Track Time Start Time Opening and Introduction (Thom Holmes) 11:57 00:00 1. Herbie Hancock, Herbie Hancock Demonstrates The Rhodes Piano (1973 Rhodes). A terrific flexi-disc produced by Rhodes and narrated by Hancock who tells an interesting story about his first encounter with the instrument on a Miles Davis session and then he walks the keyboard through a series of effects. He speaks with the authority of a proud electronics tinkerer who understands the nuances that make this instrument so beloved by jazz musicians. This flexi-disc was originally delivered in the November 8, 1973 issue of Down Beat magazine. I provide both sides of the disc, in entirety. Tunes included during the demonstration include parts of Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and The Spook. Soloist, Rhodes Electric Piano, Voice, Herbie Hancock. I thought it would be wisest to lead off this podcast with an overview of the Rhodes even though it is out of chronological sequence, being from 1973. We then go back a few years to hear tracks in proper time order. 12:48 11:57 2. The Don Ellis Orchestra, “Open Beauty” from Electric Bath (1967 Columbia). See the opening tracks from this podcast for a story about this session from Hancock. Bass, Ron Carter; Drums, Tony Williams; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Herbie Hancock; Tenor Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Trumpet, Miles Davis. 16:59 30:14 4. Oliver Nelson and Steve Allen, “Go Fly a Kite” from Soulful Brass (1968 Impulse). Another Steve Allen record, whom we heard from in part 1 playing the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Here is a selection from an album on which he plays the Rock-Si-Chord and occasional piano. Arranged by Oliver Nelson; Rock-Si-Chord, piano, Steve Allen; Drums, Jimmy Gordon; session musicians, Barney Kessel, Bobby Bryant, Larry Bunker, Roger Kellaway, Tom Scott; Produced by Bob Thiele. 2:30 51:24 6. J & K “Mojave” from Betwixt & Between (1969 A&M, CTI). “J” is J.J. Johnson (trombonist) and “K” is Kai Winding (trombonist). Their ensemble included Roger Kellaway playing the electric clavinette. An example of using the clavinet in jazz. This was most likely a Hohner Clavinet Model C which had just been introduced in 1968. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios during late 1968. 2:31 53:54 7. Albert Ayler, “New Generation” from New Grass (1969 Impulse). The great jazz funk flutist Bobbi Humphrey released a series of albums around this time that often-featured fantastic synthesizer players. This episode is titled for a recording found through jazztodon.com . Oliver Nelson (of Blues and the Abstract Truth fame), recorded Skull Session in 1975. It's quite a departure from his other recordings, and is his take on the fusion sound that was popular in that era. Same can be said for the Preminger track if you are familiar with his work. The podcast ends on a more familiar note for ITG listeners with Mobley, Morgan and Shank.

Synopsis In the early years of the 20th century, a hauntingly beautiful piece of Grecian sculpture – a bust of the head of the goddess Aphrodite – was donated to the Boston Museum of Fine Art. There it inspired this orchestral work by Boston composer George Whitefield Chadwick. Chadwick's symphonic tone poem Aphrodite was, in the words of the composer, “an attempt to suggest in music the poetic and tragic scenes which may have passed before the sightless eyes of such a goddess.” Chadwick composed this music during East Coast holidays on Martha's Vineyard, inspired, he said, by the play of light and wind on the sea before him. It received its premiere at the Norfolk Festival in Connecticut on this date in 1912. On today's date in 1999, at a summer musical festival on the opposite coast of America, another musical work inspired by ancient Greece received its first performance. This music was entitled Five Images after Sappho, inspired by texts of the ancient Greek poetess Sappho and written for the remarkable voice of a modern American soprano, Dawn Upshaw. It was premiered at the Ojai Festival in California, and was written by the Finnish composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Music Played in Today's Program George Whitefield Chadwick (1854 - 1931) Aphrodite Brno State Philharmonic; Jose Serebrier, conductor. Big bands tempt the ambitious jazzer with their expansive possibilities for arrangements, the variegated colors they offer, and their sheer power. But, boy, those budgets! These days you need a generous label or a grant or two to make things work. We take a look at a very seventies example of the genre and then a brand new effort by a young woman barely old enough to drive. A guitar trio and a guitar solo fill out the episode, and they couldn't be at further ends of the in to out spectrum. In the end show, Mike fills us in on a couple major acts he caught recently in San Diego. Grace Fox – ELEVEN O'SEVEN; Oz Noy/Riverside Trio – RIVERSIDE; Samo Salamon – DOLPHYOLOGY; Oliver Nelson – SKULL SESSION.

Carl Hancock Rux's work crosses the disciplines of poetry, theater, music, and literary fiction in order to achieve what one critic describes as a "dizzying oral artistry...unleashing a torrent of paper bag poetry and post modern Hip-Bop music; the ritualistic blues of self awakening."Carl Hancock Rux is an American poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, recording artist, actor, theater director, radio journalist, as well as a frequent collaborator in the fields of film, modern dance, and contemporary art. He is the author of several books including the Village Voice Literary Prize-winning collection of poetry, Pagan Operetta, the novel, Asphalt, and the Obie Award-winning play, Talk. WRITER/POETWorking as a Social Work Trainer while moonlighting as a freelance art and music critic, Rux became a founding member of Hezekiah Walker's Love Fellowship gospel choir and later found himself influenced by the Lower East Side poetry and experimental theater scene, collaborating with poets Miguel Algarin, Bob Holman, Jayne Cortez, Sekou Sundiata, Ntozake Shange; experimental musicians David Murray, Mal Waldron, Butch Morris, Craig Harris, Jeanne Lee, Leroy Jenkins, Odetta, Steve Earle, Jim Carroll as well as experimental theater artists Laurie Carlos, Robbie McCauley, Ruth Maleczech, Lee Breuer, Reza Abdoh and others.RECORDING ARTIST/PERFORMING ARTISTHis CD Rux Revue was recorded and produced in Los Angeles by the Dust Brothers, Tom Rothrock, and Rob Schnapf and voted one of the top ten alternative music CDs of 1998 (New York Times). Rux recorded a follow up album, Apothecary Rx, (selected by French writer Phillippe Robert for his 2008 publication "Great Black Music": an exhaustive tribute of 110 albums including 1954's "Lady Sings The Blues" by Billie Holiday, the work of Jazz artists Oliver Nelson, Max Roach, John Coltrane, rhythm and blues artists Otis Redding, Ike & Tina Turner, Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton; as well as individual impressions of Fela Kuti, Jimi Hendrix, and Mos Def.) His fourth studio CD, Good Bread Alley, was released by Thirsty Ear Records, and his fifth Homeostasis (CD Baby) was released in May 2013.
