“It can't rain all the time.”Those words became immortal the day Brandon Lee brought The Crow to life and lost his own in the process. Born to a martial arts legend, Brandon Lee was poised for stardom, carving out a name for himself outside of his father's shadow, but fate had other ideas when a tragic accident occurred on set, and The Crow, a dark and gothic thriller, would become both his final film and his legacy. After 30 years, The Crow has immortalized Brandon Lee in its haunting story of Eric Draven, risen from the dead seeking retribution, but his death also created another legacy, one that changed the way Hollywood would operate to keep casts and crews safe. Haunted by the legacy of his superstar father and by an old family curse, Brandon Lee tried to outrun the past. But the past came after him all the same. It was said that his father, Bruce Lee, was taken by that family curse at just 32 years old, and that it then followed Brandon to the set of The Crow, a cross between a superhero blockbuster and a brooding art film that was all goth. The shoot was plagued by injury, electrocution, storms, fires, and car crashes – and culminated in tragedy when a prop gun fired a real bullet. Released in 1994 and directed by Alex Proyas, The Crow is more than just a revenge tale. It's a journey through grief, justice, and the supernatural. Based on James O'Barr's graphic novel, the film tells the tragic story of Eric Draven and Shelly Webster who are murdered by a Detroit gang. A year later Eric is resurrected from his grave to avenge their deaths and soothe the guilt he feels for failing to protect his fiancé. With its haunting visuals, unforgettable soundtrack, and the tragic real-life story of Brandon Lee—whose performance became his legacy—the film carved out a permanent place in pop culture. Alisha Mughal's It Can't Rain All the Time: The Crow (ECW Press, 2025) weaves memoir with film criticism in an effort to pin down The Crow's cultural resonance. A passionate analysis of the ill-fated 1994 film starring the late Brandon Lee and its long-lasting influence on action movies, cinematic grief, and emotional masculinity Released in 1994, The Crow first drew in audiences thanks to the well-publicized tragedy that loomed over the film: lead actor Brandon Lee had died on set due to a mishandled prop gun. But it soon became clear that The Crow was more than just an accumulation of its tragic parts. The celebrated critic Roger Ebert wrote that Lee's performance was “more of a screen achievement than any of the films of his father, Bruce Lee.” In It Can't Rain All the Time, Mughal argues that The Crow has transcended Brandon Lee's death by exposing the most challenging human emotions in all their dark, dramatic, and visceral glory, so much so that it has spawned three sequels, a remake, and an intense fandom. Eric, our back-from-the-dead, grieving protagonist, shows us that there is no solution to depression or loss, there is only our own internal, messy work. By the end of the movie, we realize that Eric has presented us with a vast range of emotions and that masculinity doesn't need to be hard and impenetrable. Through her memories of seeking solace in the film during her own grieving period, Mughal brilliantly shows that, for all its gothic sadness, The Crow is, surprisingly and touchingly, a movie about redemption and hope. Abashed the devil stood, and felt how awful goodness is. The Crow (1994) is a one-of-a-kind film, borne out of tragedy and thought to be cursed. Send us a textEpisode 225 of the Hey You Guys Podcast is here, and this week, Liam and Rob look back at 1991's underrated martial arts classic, Showdown in Little Tokyo. Possibly the most 80s movie to be released in the 90s, whether it be Brandon Lee's scene stealing performance, Dolph Lundgren's almost alarming love of all things Japan (except Yakuza, of course), or the movie's fantastically brief 79 minute runtime, this wonderful throwback deserves to be revisited by anyone with a love for 80s-style cinema. See what we made of it via the link in the bio.

Do you ever talk about your favorite things through top 5 lists? Like, you have your top 5 tv shows, or top 5 songs, etc. No? Just me? Cool. When I look back at my favorite movies and soundtracks, you'll find The Crow in the top 5 of both categories. The film still makes me feel emotions I didn't think possible. It's such a heavy film to me even 31 years after its release. Maybe watching it brings back grief from the loss of Brandon Lee. Or maybe The Crow is packed with emotional content and themes. To this day I still tear up at one particular moment in the film (which we discuss in the podcast). What's wrong with me?In the latest installment of the Pop Classics series, Alisha Mughal has taken on the task of taking us on a deep dive of the classic film. Her book 'It Can't Rain All The Time' is available now and I think any movie fan will enjoy it.In this episode we discuss the history and folklore about The Crow, how you can find similarities with the John Wick universe, how incredible Brandon Lee truly was and so much more.
As we keep chugging along on the F4 train, here's 2007's "Rise of the Silver Surfer". When a movie makes a bunch of money, regardless of quality, they say let's do another. And they did another one of the 2005's cast and director. And Doom comes back. Why? Why bring Doom back? Whatever, it has a surfer made of silver. If you like it, please do like, subscribe, spread the word, and if you write up a review on any of the podcast services, you can pick a movie for us to cover. Rapid Fire (1992)Directed By: Dwight H. LittleStarring: Brandon Lee, Powers Boothe, Nick Mancuso, That guy from MulanTo wash the filth off of us after talking about the Lou Ferrigno joint "Instant Death" we had to take a breather and talk about a good action flick - this time it's Brandon Lee's first big budget starring role. You may know Brandon's other big title, "The Crow", but Rapid Fire lets him show off a little more of his move set. IMDB has this to say about Rapid Fire: "When student Jake Lo witnesses a killing, he finds himself caught between two feuding drug lords. Before Marvel struck it big with "Iron Man", they thought "Hey, how about that stretchy guy and rock man? People like them!" and they made 2005's "Fantastic Four".This here movie was a hit! They put a bunch of money into it and cashed in hard enough to warrant a sequel. But is it good? Is it actually boring and just not quite enough of anything? You've probably seen it, but if not, tune in and find out! Maybe you're a diehard Ioan Gruffudd stan?
