City Lights: The Oscar Peterson Quartet – Live in Munich, 1994. Con Alma: The Oscar Peterson Trio – Live in Lugano, 1964. Veronica Swift's new eponymously titled album, her third for Mack Avenue Records, is a masterful coming-out story. On her previous albums, Confessions (2019) and This Bitter Earth (2021), she ascended to the upper echelon of early 21st century jazz singers because of her virtuosic brilliance, interpretive ingenuity, bracing songwriting, and keen arrangements. Simply put, Swift is not only one of the most dazzling singers to emerge in her generation, she's one of the most versatile. While her first two albums solidified her position in modern jazz, Veronica Swift shows that she's more than a jazz singer, exploring French and Italian opera, European classical music, bossa nova, blues, industrial rock, funk, and vaudeville. She pulls the feat off without the results sounding callow or pastiche. Swift's expansive artistic voice remains firmly intact regardless of genre. Swift describes this personal artistic statement on her new album as “transgenre.” “I grew up immersed in the culture of jazz music, blessed to have had some of the greats as mentors, and I felt a deep familial duty to uphold that” she says, reflecting on her parents - jazz singer and educator, Stephanie Nakasian, and bebop pianist, Hod O'Brien. “But as rooted in jazz as I've been, there's a uniquely visceral power in rock and soul music that's always fueled my creative passion, and rather than mask or confine that part of my identity, the people I admire most show themselves unabashedly and that's the kind of tradition I want to be a part of. Два оригинала и десять отличных аранжировок: The Beatles, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Michael Brecker и McCoy Tyner тчательно подобраны на новом альбоме Вечные вещи - Things Eternal гитариста Dan Wilson. Признанный критиками пианист и композитор Billy Childs записал альбом The Winds of Change. © 2023 Mack Avenue Records Billy Childs - piano Ambrose Akinmusire - trumpet Scott Colley - bass Brian Blade - drums All songs written & arranged by Billy Childs • Lunacy Music (BMI), administered by Modern Works Music Publishing except: “Crystal Silence” by Chick Corea • Litha Music Co./Universal Music Corp (BMI) “The Black Angel” by Kenny Barron • Hubtones Music Co. Второй альбом басиста Christian McBride с проектом New Jawn называется Prime. © 2023 Mack Avenue Records II Christian McBride - bass Josh Evans - trumpet Marcus Strickland - tenor sax 2,4,6-8 & bass clarinet 1,3,5 Nasheet Waits - drums Produced by Christian McBride #bebop --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message
© 2022 Mack Avenue Records Oscar Peterson – piano Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen – bass Louis Hayes – drums Recorded at Zurich Kongresshaus – Zurich, Switzerland • November 24, 1971 by Radio Zurich ℗ 2022 SRF Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen under exclusive worldwide license from Two Lions Records to Mack Avenue Records II, LLC. #bebop #swing --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message
Oct 15, 2021 In this episode of SOMETHING came from Baltimore, I chat with Joey D about his new recording, "More Music". There is a Youtube exclusive interview also on this site where he chats about Questlove and Christian McBride...and we go down memory lane and chat about Philly's Orlieb's Jazzhauz. Bio On Joey D.! Raised in Philadelphia, this is where the foundation of his musical roots in Jazz, Blues and other musical art forms were born. To hear Joey DeFrancesco today, his music embodies the traditional art form infused with a distinct modern approach, just part of what makes his music unmistakably his own. " He has dominated the instrument and the field as no one of his generation has.” – Chicago Tribune “Mr. DeFrancesco is a deeply authoritative musician, a master of rhythmic pocket, and of the custom of stomping bass lines beneath chords and riffs.” - New York Times Joey DeFrancesco's emergence in the 1980s marked the onset of a musical renaissance. Organ jazz had all but gone into hibernation from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s until DeFrancesco reignited the flame with his vintage Hammond organ and Leslie speaker cabinet. The son of "Papa" John DeFrancesco, an organist himself, the younger DeFrancesco remembers playing as early as four-years-old. Soon after, his father began bringing him to gigs in Philadelphia, sitting in with legendary players like Hank Mobley and Philly Joe Jones, who quickly recognized his talent and enthusiasm. With a natural gift for music, DeFrancesco also swiftly picked up on the trumpet after a touring stint with Miles Davis as one of the two youngest players ever recruited for any of Davis' ensembles. DeFrancesco has recorded and/or toured with his own groups as well as numerous renowned artists that include Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, James Moody, John Scofield, Bobby Hutcherson, Jimmy Cobb, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, David Sanborn and many more. The four time Grammy® Award-nominee, with more than 30 recordings as a leader under his belt, has received countless Jazz Journalist Association awards and other accolades worldwide, including being inducted into the inaugural Hammond Organ Hall of Fame in 2014, the Philadelphia Music Walk of Fame in 2016 as well as topping the Critics Polls in DownBeat Magazine eleven times over the past fifteen years and the Readers Polls every year since 2005. DeFrancesco also hosts a weekly program on SiriusXM Radio's Real Jazz channel titled "Organized." More Music, due out September 24, via Mack Avenue Records, is “more” in every conceivable way. It offers up ten new DeFrancesco originals, brought to life by a scintillating new trio. And the master organist, who has long supplemented his keyboard virtuoso with his skilled trumpet playing, here brings out his full arsenal: organ, keyboard, piano, trumpet, and, for the first time on record, tenor saxophone. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

The film follows several former campers who went on to be leaders of the Disability Rights Movement. Laura speaks with the directors and producers of Crip Camp about how they are using the film to advance the next step in the revolution: Disability Justice, a movement that centers the leadership of disabled queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, and people of color. If the inclusive culture of Camp Jened could help transform American society in the second half of the 20th century, what could a truly intersectional Disability Justice Movement change for us all today? Plus thoughts from Laura on interdependence. Music Spotlight: “Badass and Blind” the title track of Raul Midon's album released on Mack Avenue Records. On his latest album, however, Wolf reveals an entirely different side to his multi-faceted talents. As the title implies, Reincarnation (due out February 28 via Mack Avenue Records) represents a rebirth of sorts for the Baltimore vibesman. In part it frees Wolf to indulge his love for the R&B and soul hits that served as the soundtrack to his formative years in the 1990s. It's also a celebration of a new lease on life, a happiness and contentment that he's discovered through a new marriage and his five beloved children. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

With her debut Mack Avenue Records album CRIME ZONE (available October 12), next generation Los Angeles pianist Connie Han has created an edgy blend of modern and traditional jazz. Han’s parents, both practicing classical musicians, instilled an appreciation for music and a strong work ethic in Han very early on, enrolling her in piano lessons at the age of five. “Learning the piano as a child was a gift. By the time I became interested in jazz at the age of 14, I had great technical proficiency on my instrument allowing me to focus all my energy on the more sophisticated elements of jazz music. More importantly, I was able to tackle the social equation of learning how to play with others. It takes a lot of time and patience to internalize the essence and heartbeat of jazz.” The 22-year-old’s connection to jazz began at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts where she met and was mentored by drummer Bill Wysaske, who produced CRIME ZONE and has also become the musical director of her trio. Han shares her LACHSA alumni status with several major players in the entertainment industry such as Josh Groban, Jenna Elfman, Christina Milian and GRAMMY® Award-nominated jazz pianist and composer Gerald Clayton. After a three-week stint at UCLA, Han immediately began her professional piano career at 17-years-old; a step that Han believes gives her an overall edge against many players her age. “Because I never received training from a formal jazz piano teacher, most of my musical perspective actually came from interacting with a professional drummer when I was just a youngling, trying to hang on for dear life. I think that experience has given me a unique edge which informs the heavily percussive elements of my playing.
Trumpeter Sean Jones joined the Berklee faculty as chair of brass last year, adding to an already very long list of striking careeer accomplishments as a recording artist, educator, and artistic director of the Cleveland and Pittsburgh jazz orchestras. He has performed and/or recorded with Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath, and Nancy Wilson, as well as with Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter in the 2011 Tribute to Miles tour. He has released seven albums as a leader on the Mack Avenue Records imprint. Jones was originally a drummer but discovered the trumpet at the age of 10 upon hearing Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue and Amandla. Soon after earning his master’s degree from Rutgers University, he was named lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra—a position he held for six years while continuing to tour, perform, and record regularly. Jones performs on July 31, 2015 at the Newport Jazz Festival with the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra.
Big band leader, trumpeter and composer Gerald Wilson was a jazz treasure for more than 6 decades. JazzCorner.com's Lois Gilbert spent several hours with Gerald on his 89th birthday during the Detroit Jazz Festival. Gerald Wilson died on September 8, 2014; 4 days after his 96th birthday. KENNY GARRETT DEBUTS HIS NEW CD PUSHING THE WORLD AWAY For his third Mack Avenue Records release, Pushing the World Away, alto/soprano saxophonist, composer/bandleader Kenny Garrett literally had to “push away” a steady flow of distractions to get to the inner core of the album, shifting priorities in his schedule and diving deep into the essence of the music. “I'm always writing, so coming up with the music wasn't a problem,” says Garrett, who is arguably the most imitated alto saxophone player in jazz. “But I had been traveling a lot with my band, and I don't rehearse new material on tour. Yet to record an album requires a lot of preparation and to conceptualize the music I had to push away to receive the blessings and gifts from these songs.” On Pushing the World Away, Garrett continues to mature as a composer. As the late Mulgrew Miller, his close friend for many years, noted in a DownBeat feature on the saxophonist last year: “Kenny has always had a great sound from the beginning. He had his own unique sound, but [thanks to his compositions] that sound has transformed into a more captivating and lyrical voice.” Garrett, in turn, nods to the pianist who he had known for more than 30 years on the jaunty, upbeat and at times explosive opening track of the album, “A Side Order of Hijiki,” which is decidedly not about the hijiki culinary seaweed. “No seaweed,” says Garrett who takes an expansive alto flight on this track. “It's actually the word that Mulgrew used to describe my playing style. He would say, ‘I hear you playing that hijiki'.”
Jason Crane interviews drummer Carl Allen. He and Rodney Whitaker have just released their second CD for Mack Avenue Records, titled Work To Do. Allen has been on the jazz scene since joining Freddie Hubbard's band in college, and he's served as the mentor for many jazz musicians, most notably Christian McBride. In this interview, Allen talks about why he and Whitaker chose the music they did for the new CD, his relationship with McBride, and whether the academy can replace the bandstand.
