In this episode of Better Business, Better Life, Debra Chantry-Taylor is joined by Justine Parsons, founder of Your VA and The Lever, to explore the pivotal shift from managing a business to truly leading one. Justine shares her 27-year journey of building a virtual assistant business from the ground up, growing a team of more than 50 people, and eventually realising that success should not mean constant reactivity, exhaustion, or being needed for every decision. Together, Debra and Justine unpack the moment many founders face where the business works, but the role they are playing no longer does. The conversation dives into the emotional and practical challenges of stepping out of day to day management, trusting others to lead, and redefining what success looks like beyond revenue and growth. Justine reflects the importance of external support, mentorship, and frameworks like EOS in helping her create clarity, build a strong leadership team, and put the right people in the right seats. This episode is a powerful reminder that businesses are meant to serve their owners, not consume them. If you are feeling stuck in the weeds, questioning your role, or sensing it is time to move from managing to leading, this conversation will help you see what is possible on the other side. In this episode, Adi Klevit sits down with John Gwaltney to unpack how intentional systemization allowed him to step out of daily operations while continuing to scale multiple businesses. John shares the evolution of Outback Deck, from knocking on doors and handing out flyers to building a $14–15 million operation that runs without constant owner involvement. John explains how hiring improved once his team invested in documented processes and repeatable hiring systems. He also walks through how operational clarity led to innovation, including the creation of Deck Metrics, Contractor Classroom, and Deck View—tools designed to help contractors price faster, sell more confidently, and deliver consistent results. Throughout the conversation, Adi and John tie everything back to documentation, accountability, and having a single source of truth. John emphasizes that systems are not about control—they are about trust, consistency, and giving leaders the confidence to step away without things falling apart.

I must apologize—I'm feeling a little under the weather, and you're probably going to be able to hear that in my voice today. But the show must go on, as they say. This episode, as you've probably already seen from the title, is going to be about your mindset. I've been having a lot of conversations with clients about mindset and perception, and just kind of switching things around and busting the 24/7 myth—which means you have to be on all the time. Let me remind you that one of the biggest reasons many of us got into entrepreneurship was so that we could control our time and money. You started this business for freedom, right? You wanted to make your own schedule. Maybe even sneak in an afternoon nap. I mean, you're the boss now. You should be able to do what you want, when you want. Right? But if we're really honest—is that what you've got now? This is going to either appeal to your younger entrepreneurial self, or it's going to hit you right where you are today. And if this is your younger self, I encourage you to spread some love, light, and joy by finding wherever this was posted and leaving a comment about how you got through it. Because this is a community. Together, we rise. Sometimes it kind of feels like we're in a golden cage. You're the one doing the overnight sits or you're the one answering calls after 9 PM. You're the one rescheduling your life around last-minute client requests. Sound familiar? There's this toxic belief I hear from pet business owners all the time: “If I'm not there, it falls apart.” That's not freedom—it's survival. And you didn't build your business to survive. You built it so you could live. So today we're busting the myth. We're breaking the lie that your business only works if you work yourself to the bone. We're going to talk about systems, delegation, and building something that actually gives you your life back.

A story about finding freedom by solving problems others ignored—on purpose. For SaaS founders tired of feature bloat—and wondering if serving fewer people better might be the smarter path to freedom. Most SaaS companies fail because they try to please everyone. They fail because they spread themselves across every platform, every feature request, every shiny opportunity.Samy Dindane, CEO of Hypefury, took a different path.He spotted a gap nobody else cared about—Twitter thread scheduling—and built a prototype in three days. Instead of raising money or hiring fast, he chose freedom through focus. And this inspired me to invite Samy to my podcast. We explore how deliberate constraints create stronger businesses. Samy shares hard-won insights about platform dependence, community-driven development, and knowing when to say no. You'll discover why his users became product owners and how charging more actually made customers happier. We also zoom in on two of the 10 traits that define remarkable software companies: – They acknowledge they can't please everyone – They master the art of curiositySamy's story is proof that sustainable freedom comes from saying no to good opportunities—not just bad ones. Here's one of Samy's quotes that captures his philosophy:"Whatever time you spend on something, you don't spend on something else.
