Do you feel uneasy about handing your kid an internet-enabled device? Or feel like you know very little about what they're doing online? It can be really tough to broach conversations about this stuff without instantly putting our kids on the defense. We're joined by Soren Poulsen, co-founder of Raising Digital Citizens and father of two, who, alongside his wife, created the Essential Conversation Cards for Life Online. After puzzling over how to prepare their own daughter for her first phone, they developed a new approach to help families talk about digital safety, consent, bullying, and online privacy in a casual manner. Whether your kid is begging for their first device or you're already deep in the world of screen-time debates, Soren's insights promise to make your family conversations more productive. After the interview, Adam shares an exciting installment of So That's a Thing Now.Episode 122 of Modern Dadhood opens with a discussion between Marc & Adam about the topic of digital citizenship. The guys discus how this can be a sensitive topic to broach with young people. The guys introduce Soren Poulsen into the conversation. Soren and his wife, author Jessica Joelle Alexander, co-founded Raising Digital Citizens, an organization aims to empower families to cultivate meaningful, trust-based relationships that support children's safe and responsible engagement with the digital world. Rather than relying on fear or restrictive controls, the organization emphasizes open conversations grounded in shared values and mutual respect. Conversation topics include:•  The Essential Conversation Cards for Life Online•  What exactly "hygge" means•  The importance of parent-child communication•  Adapting conversations to different age groups and different needs•  How approaching these conversations early can have positive long-term effects•  And more!Stay to the end of the episode to learn about a new phase of life for the Flaherty family in a new installment of So That's a Thing Now.LINKSRaising Digital CitizensBuy the Conversation Cards on Amazon!Raising Digital Citizens (LinkedIn)Raising Digital Citizens (Instagram)Caspar BabypantsSpencer AlbeeModern Dadhood (website)AdamFlaherty.tvStuffed Animal (Marc's kids' music)MD (Instagram)MD (Facebook)MD (YouTube)MD (TikTok) #moderndadhood #fatherhood #parenthood #parenting #parentingpodcast #dadding #dadpodcast

New Zealand children have had their say on what they want from a safer internet. A Save the Children and Netsafe survey of a thousand young people aged six to eighteen finds more than half feel safe online. Around three quarters believe greater control over ads, and stronger protections from harmful content are needed. Netsafe Chief Online Officer Sean Lyons told Andrew Dickens it needs to be a joint effort. He says it's the responsibility of parents to keep an eye and provide support, but it's also on regulation and the platforms. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this insightful episode, host Mark Stinson sits down with Ben Gillenwater, a technology expert with a background as a CTO, former NSA contractor, and entrepreneur. Together, they delve into the critical topic of internet safety in the home, exploring the intersection of creativity, technology, and security. Ben shares his unique perspective on how the digital age's innovations come with significant privacy and security concerns that every family should be aware of. He offers practical advice on how to protect personal information and minimize risks, emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant in the face of increasingly sophisticated online threats.5 Key Takeaways:1. Understanding the Stakes: Internet safety extends far beyond physical threats; it includes privacy, emotional well-being, and protecting against the monetization of our digital behaviors. Major companies like Meta, Google, and Microsoft are financially motivated to collect and utilize personal data to enhance their advertising revenue, often at the cost of user privacy.2. The Hidden Dangers of Data Collection: Seemingly harmless online activities can lead to significant behavioral and information exposure. For instance, social media platforms like Facebook track user behavior across the internet, leading to data breaches like the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where personal data was exploited for political gain.3. Children and Internet Safety: Giving children unfiltered access to the internet is akin to leaving your home's front door unlocked. Ben stresses the importance of monitoring and controlling internet access for children and gradually increasing their exposure as they mature and develop better judgment.4. The Illusion of Free Services: Many free apps and services are designed to capture and monetize user data. Ben advises listeners to be skeptical of "free" offerings, as they often come with hidden costs, such as compromised privacy and personal information being sold to third parties.5. Practical Solutions for Families: There are actionable steps that families can take to protect themselves, such as using child safety apps like Bark, which offer comprehensive monitoring of children's online activities. However, as children grow older, it's essential to balance technical controls with education on digital literacy and responsible online behavior.Quote:*"You are safer removing the locks in your house than you are giving your kids unfiltered access to the Internet." — Ben GillenwaterDon't miss this episode if you want to learn how to safeguard your family's digital life and navigate the complexities of internet safety in the modern age.Subscribe & Follow: Stay updated with the latest episodes of Your World of Creativity by subscribing on your favorite podcast platform and following us on social media.

During Black Hat USA 2024 in Las Vegas, Sean Martin engages in a Brand Story conversation with TK Keanini from DNSFilter to explore the pivotal role DNSFilter plays in safeguarding networks around the world. DNSFilter operates by leveraging the Domain Name System (DNS), an essential component of the internet. As TK Keanini shares, the company's primary mission is to filter out malicious traffic and allow legitimate traffic to pass through, thereby providing an effective layer of security that is both accessible and user-friendly.The applicability of DNSFilter spans globally, reflecting the nature of cyber threats, which are not confined by geographic borders. One critical aspect discussed is DNSFilter's ability to manage approximately 130 billion DNS requests daily, blocking between three to four billion potentially harmful requests. This impressive scale underscores the importance of DNSFilter in preventing cyberattacks and protecting users from inadvertently accessing malicious sites. From coffee shops to large enterprises, the relevance and ease of deploying DNSFilter stand out. For businesses, the practical uses of DNSFilter are numerous.Keanini explains that the technology is effortless to set up and can be integrated directly into various levels of IT infrastructure, including Wi-Fi routers in coffee shops and public Wi-Fi in retail settings. This straightforward setup enables even those with minimal technical expertise to implement robust cybersecurity measures easily. The conversation also highlights DNSFilter's effectiveness in addressing global issues, such as Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), reinforcing the company's commitment to making the internet safer for everyone. The firm's blocking capabilities are not limited to phishing and ransomware; they extend to other harmful content categories, ensuring comprehensive protection. Moreover, for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and organizations with established cybersecurity programs, DNSFilter offers an invaluable addition to their security suite. With DNSFilter, policies can be set with a single click, streamlining the process for schools, businesses, and managed service providers alike. Keanini points out that this level of usability ensures that even those without extensive cybersecurity experience can effectively manage and implement necessary protections.Additionally, Keanini emphasizes the importance of DNSFilter's role in protecting everyday users on public Wi-Fi networks and its affordability for public-use scenarios. DNSFilter's technology integrates smoothly into existing security frameworks, providing peace of mind to users and IT administrators that their networks are secure. For individuals and organizations looking to enhance their online security, DNSFilter presents a compelling solution. With its easy setup, global reach, and comprehensive protection against a wide range of cyber threats, DNSFilter stands as a vital tool in the arsenal of modern cybersecurity solutions.Learn more about DNSFilter: https://itspm.ag/dnsfilter-1g0fNote: This story contains promotional content. Learn more.Guest: TK Keanini, CTO, DNSFilter [@DNSFilter]On LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/tkkeaninipub/ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from DNSFilter: https://www.itspmagazine.com/directory/dnsfilterView all of our Black Hat USA  2024 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/black-hat-usa-2024-hacker-summer-camp-2024-event-coverage-in-las-vegasAre you interested in telling your story?https://www.itspmagazine.com/telling-your-story
