Human-Led Experiences “At the end of the day, for me, this is really what it is all about is we create human-led experiences powered by exceptional human talent.” Jake emphasized that while technology and AI continue to reshape the entertainment landscape, RWS differentiates itself through people. He explained that the company's success comes from blending creative excellence with operational excellence while relying on world-class talent to bring experiences to life. Rather than simply producing entertainment, RWS focuses on creating emotional human connections through storytelling and immersive engagement. He shared that audiences today no longer want entertainment to simply “happen at them.” Instead, guests want to actively participate in experiences. Jake highlighted immersive cruise ship lounges, secret speakeasy experiences, and branded activations as examples of how RWS creates environments where guests become part of the story. He also reflected on the emotional impact of character meet-and-greets, explaining that even seemingly small interactions can become lifelong memories for families and children. Single Source Of Truth “I think one foundational principle, it doesn't matter how big you are, it doesn't matter if you're a five-person team or a 500-person team, is single source of truth.” As RWS expanded globally through acquisitions, Jake explained that communication and operational alignment became one of the company's biggest challenges. He described how different offices initially operated on disconnected systems, making collaboration inefficient and inconsistent. To solve this, RWS implemented a unified operational infrastructure where all teams use the same communication tools, HR systems, project management platforms, and content repositories. Jake explained that a single source of truth is about much more than software. It creates clarity, accountability, and consistency across an organization. Whether someone works in New York, Shanghai, London, or Riyadh, every team member knows exactly where to find the most accurate information and how to communicate effectively. He stressed that scalable businesses require stable systems, consistent rhythms, and clearly defined communication channels that allow people to focus on delivering experiences instead of searching for the correct version of a document. The Ferrari Analogy “RWS Global looks like a Ferrari on the outside. My job is to make sure that it is built like a Ferrari on the inside.” Jake used this analogy to explain his operational philosophy as COO and now Interim CEO. While many companies focus only on what guests see externally, he believes long-term success depends on building strong systems, infrastructure, and operational discipline beneath the surface. That includes scalable processes, integrated global teams, intentional communication strategies, and carefully aligned acquisitions. He explained that sustainable growth requires more than rapid expansion. Organizations must build a reliable internal engine capable of supporting future scale without sacrificing quality or culture. Jake shared that RWS learned early on that acquisitions do not naturally integrate themselves. Success requires clear communication, cultural understanding, unified systems, and leadership that intentionally creates one cohesive team. In this episode, Charles sits down with Victor Gurbo, a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and guitar builder from Brooklyn, New York. Victor's musical journey began early — literally from infancy, when his father discovered that Traveling Wilburys recordings were the only thing that could calm a crying baby Victor. That early imprinting on Dylan's collaborators set the stage for a lifelong obsession with live music, particularly the work of Bob Dylan, whom Victor estimates he has seen between 20 and 30 times. The conversation opens with Victor recounting his very first concert at age nine — an Arlo Guthrie show in Martha's Vineyard — a memory that exists more in fragments than in full, including nodding off during parts of the set, only to snap back awake for "Alice's Restaurant." The episode is rich with vivid concert memories. Victor shares stories of seeing Levon Helm multiple times at the Beacon Theatre and Terminal 5, reflecting on how Helm's deep love for his audience was palpable, especially after his battle with throat cancer. Victor also recounts a bittersweet Conor Oberst show in 2008, where he got to hear a then-unreleased song that would later appear on the next album — the kind of "you were there first" moment that makes live music so irreplaceable. But perhaps the most memorable story is the infamous Jack White show at Radio City Music Hall in 2012. After losing their tickets outside the venue and spending an hour on hold with StubHub, Victor and his friend were gifted front-row seats by a compassionate employee — only to watch White cut the show short, apparently unhappy with the audience's energy. For Victor, a performer himself, the experience was deeply personal and left a lasting impression on how he thinks about the relationship between an artist and their crowd. Victor's life as a performer and craftsman are equally compelling. After ordering a custom guitar from legendary New York luthier Rick Kelly — who famously builds instruments from the reclaimed wood of demolished Manhattan buildings — and waiting four and a half years for it to arrive, Victor taught himself to build guitars in the meantime, eventually winning Best Band in Brooklyn at NPR's Battle of the Boroughs in 2013 with an instrument he made himself. Since then, the band has performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Carnegie Hall, where a mid-show equipment failure became the crowd's favorite moment of the night. Most recently, Victor released Gurbo and Company Live 2025, a live album recorded at NYC's Cafe Wha? featuring eight tracks, including covers of Bob Dylan's arrangement of "Rollin' & Tumblin'" and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." No. I'm at I'd like Lindsey and I. I went there to to meet some other folks who were there to to be at Lindsey Graham, event. Yeah. But like Lindsey or not, I mean, you really shouldn't be doing those kinds of things. I was standing there, and you could see them behind the glass. Brian and Evan Molch talking and and collaborating, and he would go outside and put signs up. The police would take him back in. I mean and they were harassing folks as they were coming out. I mean, there's really no room for politics like that. You know, we always talk about, you know, we want a bigger voter turnout and those things. You saw that in the sheriff's race. Yeah. 11% of the people showed up. So do you think those kinds of actions are going to boost voter turnout? Absolutely not. Because most people don't wanna deal with that kind of rhetoric. You know? And I if I'm not, at the end of the day, Trump has endorsed him. Trump has endorsed him for just no reason. Obviously, there there's a a really good reason why Trump wants him there. It's because he can get the Trump agenda America first done. That's why he wants them. So why would we put a freshman back in congress that is is gonna have to learn all this from the get go? I I understand that, you know, I I'm not saying I agree with everything that Lindsey does. I know there's a lot of people that don't agree with Lindsey. But but why would you take one of the most prolific, presidents in US history and put a freshman in there when president Trump is saying, I want Lindsey? Well, I say I well, I in in my opinion, since you brought it up, I think Donald Trump just needs Lindsey Graham to pass all of his nominees. Yes. Right? I mean, I I don't disagree with that. But would you want a freshman in that spot? Well, I'll be honest with you, mister mayor. I would want somebody in that spot that wasn't gonna stab me on the back on NBC every chance he gets. We have tried to do this by talking to Israelis – Israeli journalists, political figures, historians and other thought leaders, and different people from Israel's civil society. We have tried to provide historical context and perspectives from various actors in the U.S.-Israel relationship from both sides of that relationship. We did not think we would still be recording these episodes – with this focus – for one year. And yet, here we are — approaching the one-year anniversary of October 7, which will be regarded as one of the darkest days in Jewish history (and one of the darkest days in the history of Western Civilization). Most of our episodes have been shaped by weekly and daily news developments. But as we approach the one-year anniversary, we wanted to take a step back, and spend extended time with a few of our previous guests and thought leaders who are not our go-to analysts. We asked each one of them to take a longer horizon perspective, to look back at this past year and the year ahead. Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat. Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art.
