Episode: Sasha Berliner at SFJAZZ — Recontextualizing the VibraphoneIn this episode, we welcome San Francisco native Sasha Berliner, a vibraphonist, composer, and producer whose work serves as a spectral map of contemporary music. Berliner has emerged as a primary voice in the New York scene by deconstructing the traditional boundaries of her instrument, blending a rigorous jazz foundation with the kinetic, "genre-blurring" spirit of the Bay Area.We discuss her journey from rock drumming in Oakland to studying harmony with Stefon Harris, and her current trajectory toward a new "electric" aesthetic inspired by the fusion giants of the 1970s.Bay Area Foundations: Berliner attributes her experimental spirit to growing up within the artistic landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area and her formative years at the Oakland School for the Arts.A Diverse Sonic Upbringing: Her musical identity remains rooted in an eclectic mix of rock, alternative music, and hip-hop. She notes that her father's history in the local punk scene, specifically his work with the band Alice Donut, significantly influenced her approach. The Influence of Stefon Harris: Moving to New York to study with Harris was a pivotal shift. She utilizes his system of relating harmony to specific emotions as a cornerstone of her compositional process, allowing her music to "speak" without the need for lyrics.Recontextualizing the Vibraphone: Berliner actively works to move beyond "antiquated" associations of the vibraphone, creating a sound that reflects modern textures rather than solely adhering to mid-century jazz archetypes. The Electric Evolution: Her upcoming project, slated for late 2026, focuses on an all-electric ensemble featuring synths and electric bass. This direction draws inspiration from groups like Weather Report and The Headhunters, as well as modern innovators like Chris Potter's Circuits Trio. The Dynamics of Leadership: She reflects on the transition from a versatile side player for luminaries like Christian McBride to a bandleader responsible for the logistical and sonic architecture of her own projects.Musical Tracks Featured"Jade" (from the album Onyx): A track Berliner identifies as the "closest relative" to her developing electric project."Zenith" (from the album Fantôme): A piece featuring a distinctive horn arrangement inspired by the collective energy of Stefon Harris's 90 Miles album.Sasha Berliner returns home this week for a double bill with vocalist Michael Mayo at SFJAZZ.The Ensemble: Berliner will lead a quintet featuring Myles Martin (drums), Julio Xavier Chetto (bass), Javier Santiago (piano/keys), and Tristan Cappel (sax/flute).Date: Saturday, December 27, 2025.Time: 7:30 PM.Venue: Miner Auditorium, San Francisco.Tickets: Available at SFJAZZ.org.Keeping Jazz Alive in the 415.

Tonight on NJ Spotlight News, the longest government shutdown in U.S. history came to an end after Congress passed a bill that President Trump signed late last night, to fund and reopen the government. Plus, Congressman Rob Menendez joins us to talk about what's next for Democrats. Also, patients are fuming as one health care provider abruptly shutters offices across the state, we'll talk with some families trying figuring out where to go for health care. And, jazz is back at NJPAC! We'll talk with Grammy award-winning bassist Christian McBride about the lineup at the TD James Moody Jazz Festival.
In this episode, I'm joined by John Mailander, a fearless and lyrical fiddler/violinist whose work bridges bluegrass, jazz, ambient improvisation, and songcraft. We trace his path from San Diego to Berklee (where he studied American Roots with mentor Darol Anger) to Nashville, where he found a close-knit community that's as experimental as it is supportive. John discusses the city's “weirdo music” scene, ambient nights, free improvisation, and oddball collaborations, and how that energy coexists alongside the touring calendar. We dig into his life-changing chair with Bruce Hornsby: the no-setlist ethos, learning the “top 80” deep-cut originals, living on the edge together, and the night Bruce rearranged the stage so John could stand next to John Scofield, then kept tossing them intertwined solos all evening. John shares recent runs with Sam Grisman (with hero Peter Rowan onboard), producing and recording more from Nashville, and the origin of his own band Forecast, a genre-porous collective inspired by Bill Frisell, Brian Blade Fellowship, Pat Metheny/Brad Mehldau, and Joni Mitchell. We talk through the new record Let the World In: how residency nights at Dee's in Madison shaped the tunes, why the drums sound so alive, and why he welcomes rotating lineups to hear the same music through new lenses. Teaching and mentorship thread through the conversation: passing on what was given to him (formally and backstage between songs), honoring influences like Matt Mundy (ARU/Bruce Hampton), and why the point isn't “pushing boundaries” as a goal but playing honestly enough that the music pushes itself. It's a generous, grounded conversation about trust, curiosity, and letting the music lead.To learn more about John, visit his website. This week on the New Music Business podcast, Ari sits down with Nicole Zuraitis, a GRAMMY-winning, New York–based jazz singer, songwriter, pianist, and arranger. Her 2023 album How Love Begins—co-produced with Christian McBride—won Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 66th GRAMMY Awards (2024). This performance used with permission from Tommy Lehman. None of the three members of this week's trio really need much of an introduction. Tommy Lehman is a Northeast Ohio native and a Hartt School of Music graduate who performs regularly across the country both as leaders of his own projects and as a member of Alla Boara and Nathan-Paul and the Admirables. Akron based guitarist Dan Wilson's career took him on an exploratory journey into foundations laid down by the guitar/organ tradition, eventually leading to an invitation to perform with jazz great Joey DeFrancesco's quartet, with which Wilson went on to earn a GRAMMY® Award nomination in 2017. Additional work with Christian McBride's Tip City trio served as a gateway to Wilson signing with and releasing two albums on the Brother Mister record label, the most recent of which is Things Eternal. Bassist Paul Thompson is a 30 year veteran of the Pittsburgh jazz scene and, in addition to his work as an educator he has toured the world wit the likes of Maynard Ferguson and Stanley Turrentine. His bass drives Pittsburgh jazz. All of this is to say, you're in for a fantastic show. Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am proud to host Christian McBride, multi Grammy-winning jazz superstar bass player! We talk about performing at sea, and hear about Christian's inaugural charter cruise, Christian McBride's World at Sea, January 20-27, 2026. The cruise will be on Celebrity Summit from Ft. Lauderdale, stopping at Jamaica and Grand Cayman.Christian McBride is creating a new kind of experience for jazz fans while breaking new ground for artists as he takes on a "captain" and completely immersive role on his upcoming cruise, Christian McBride's World at Sea (produced by Signature Cruise Experiences whom we hosted on the podcast when they were called, Jazz Cruises, Ep 113). Music cruises have gained in popularity in recent years and give fans an incredible opportunity to personally engage with their favorite artists (running into them all week long on the ship...at the buffet, the pool, during shore excursions together, seeing concerts in smaller venues than they would on tour) but Christian is in a unique position where he's not simply one of the acts booked onto a festival at sea. Instead, he curated the cruise, building a completely personal environment and atmosphere to share with jazz fans by inviting his friends and peers like Samara Joy, Angelique Kidjo, Ledisi, Jose James, Cecile McLorin Salvant and 40 more musicians to join them. Plus, he's a prolific musician, in several bands at any given moment so it's no surprise that his time on the cruise will be no different than on land: He is bringing three of his bands onboard and will perform with each of them separately.Christian has performed on over 400 recordings, leads six different bands, has been the Creative Chair for Jazz at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is the artistic director for the world-renowned Newport Jazz Festival, curates the James Moody Jazz Festival and he hosts the popular NPR show "Jazz Night in America." The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark. Come watch the Los Angeles Brass Alliance (LAB-A) at 7PM on May 4th at Glendale First baptist Church for their second installation of Next Up! This free concert (generously sponsored by Bob Reeves Brass) spotlights LAB-A's annual collaboration between emerging LA-based composers and brass musicians. Learn more at: www.labrassalliance.org. Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Michael Dease, commercial trombonist from Los Angeles. About Michael: Michael Dease is one of the world's eminent trombonists, lending his versatile sound and signature improvisations to over 200 recordings and groups as diverse as Grammy winning artists David Sanborn, Christian McBride, Michel Camilo, and Alicia Keys. Born in Augusta, GA, he played the saxophone and trumpet before choosing the trombone at age 17. In 2001, Dease moved to New York City to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School, earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees, and quickly established a reputation as a brilliant soloist, sideperson, and bandleader. Best Next Thing (Posi-Tone, 2022), Dease's newest release, his ninth on Posi-Tone, gathers together an assemblage of exceptional musicians to help him interactively explore the essence of the blues and reframe the abstract truths of jazz as the "Best Next Thing "for today's audience of listeners. Dease, the winner of the 69th Annual DownBeat Magazine Poll for Trombonist of the Year and multi-Grammy award winner, is also a sought-after lead, section and bass trombonist with today's leading jazz orchestras. His experiences include bands led by Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Rufus Reid, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. However, it is on the frontline of quintets and sextets led by master musicians like The Heath Brothers, Winard Harper, Renee Rosnes, Bill Charlap, Claudio Roditi, and Lewis Nash, where Dease has revitalized the trombone's image. Not content to simply improvise, Dease arranges and composes for many different bands, constantly adjusting his tone and timbre to add just the right flavor to the music. Dease's unique blend of curiosity, hard work and optimism has helped him earn worldwide recognition, including awards from ASCAP, The International Trombone Association, Yamaha, Eastern Trombone Workshop, New York Youth Symphony, Hot House Magazine, Michigan State University, among others. Dease was profiled in Cicily Janus' book, The New Face of Jazz: An Intimate Look at Today's Living Legends (Random House). His experience in the studio has led him to produce several recording sessions for emerging artists, often composing and writing liner notes for the releases. Dease's singular talent has made him an effective and prolific teacher, resulting in invitations, master classes and residencies at University of North Texas, Scranton University, University of Iowa, Florida State College, Broward College, and many institutions abroad. He serves as Professor of Jazz Trombone at the renowned Michigan State University jazz program and has also been on faculty at Queens College - CUNY, The New School and North-eastern University. Many of Dease's current and former students are enjoying successful careers in the music world. Always an informed, but forward-thinking musician, Dease learned the craft from trombone legends Wycliffe Gordon and Joseph Alessi. His associations have run the entire spectrum of musical experience: Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra, Elton John, Neal Diamond, Illinois Jacquet, Slide Hampton & The World of Trombones, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, WDR Big Band, George Gruntz, Billy Harper, and numerous others. Dease enjoys spending every possible minute with his extraordinary wife and Professor of Percussion at MSU, Gwendolyn Dease, and their daughters Brooklyn & Charley. Michael Dease is a Yamaha Performing Artist and uses Pickett Brass and Vandoren mouthpieces exclusively. View Michael's All Music Guide entry here for a partial listing of his sideperson credits and discography.
This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpeter, band leader and iconic plunger mute designer Kenny Rampton, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Kenny Rampton trumpet interview" About Kenny Rampton: Trumpeter Kenny Rampton grew up in Las Vegas, and studied music at both the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and the Berklee College of Music. In 1989, he moved to New York, where he quickly established his reputation as a versatile musician, touring and performing with a veritable who's who in jazz. Kenny's first road gig was a world tour with The Ray Charles Orchestra. He subsequently went on the road with legendary jazz drummer Panama Francis and The Savoy Sultans, and soon thereafter, with The Jimmy McGriff Quartet. As a sideman, Kenny has also performed with jazz greats Jon Hendricks, Chico OFarrill's Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Persip and Supersound, Illinois Jacquet, Dr. John, Edy Martinez, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Reuben Wilson, Charles Earland, Tony Monaco, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Marcus Roberts, Christian McBride, Geoff Keezer, Richard Bona and a host of others. Kenny Rampton joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as a full time member in 2010. He also leads his own groups in addition to performing with the Mingus Big Band, The Mingus Orchestra, The Mingus Dynasty, George Gruntz' Concert Jazz Band, and The Manhattan Jazz Orchestra. Kenny is also well known as being the trumpet voice on the legendary Sesame Street. Some of his Broadway credits include "Anything Goes" (lead/solo trumpet), "Finian's Rainbow," "The Wiz," "Chicago: The Musical," "In The Heights," "Hair," "Young Frankenstein," and "The Producers," "The Drowsy Chaperone," "Spamalot," "Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me," "The Wedding Singer," "Hot Feet" and several other shows on Broadway. Finally, in 2020 Kenny started collaborating with Hirschman Mutes to design the innovative KR Indigo plunger mute, which has been a hit ever since its release. In our conversation today, Kenny shares how he got his start growing up in Las Vegas in a family of entertainers. Studying trumpet at the time largely meant classical trumpet, but Kenny soon developed a deep love for jazz. This took him across the country to Berklee, and the rest is history. Kenny tells us what it was like getting a sudden call from Ray Charles to join his orchestra, being on-screen on Sesame Street, and working closely with Wynton Marsalis at the Lincoln Center. And, we learn the story of how he developed the famous KR Indigo plunger mute, in the midst of the pandemic, as not just a useful tool for musicians but a way to stay engaged with the community during that tough time. Kenny Rampton is brimming with inspiration and heart, and it was a pleasure to have him on the podcast today. Podcast listeners! Enter code "podcast" at checkout for 15% off any of our guard bags!
