For my money, Galaxie 500 was the greatest dream pop group that ever existed. And Dean's Discograffiti appearance couldn't possibly be better timed: his brand-new solo LP, That's The Price Of Loving Me—his best work since 1990 imho—marks the first time he and producer Kramer have collaborated since that very year, after the latter had doused Galaxie 500's perfect triumvirate of albums in his trademark reverb bath. Here's just a few of the many things that Dean discusses with Discograffiti during the final chapter of this podcast:The band's brief experience employing a manager; The most off-the-beaten-path place that Dean's ever performed “Hearing Voices”;Initial rumblings of the formation of Luna;Dean's surprising favorite track on the record;Honest details about the disintegration of Galaxie 500;And a track-by-track rundown of their classic final LP, This Is Our Music!Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. Do you ever connect with an old friend and find that, despite however many years it's been, you pick up right where you left off, as if no time has passed at all? That's sort of what happened between today's guest, Dean Wareham and producer Kramer in the making of Dean's new album, That's the Price of Loving Me. You know Dean from his work with Luna and Dean and Britta, his duo with his wife Britta Phillips, but when Kramer and Dean last teamed up, it was for the recording of Dean's old band Galaxie 500's final album, 1990's This Is Our Music. Intro-ing his own interview with Dean for Aquarium Drunkard, writer Tyler Wilcox says, “All these decades later, Kramer's skill for elegant arrangements (not to mention his keyboard skills) bring something special to the proceedings, giving Dean's musings on politics, friendship, mortality, Gibson guitars and airborne toxic events a sparkling backdrop.” This week on Transmissions, Dean joins us for a spirited discussion about the new album, movie matinees, guitars, his work with director Noah Baumbach, the influence of Lou Reed—and Dean's experiences meeting him—and what happens when you, what happens when you embrace the magic of the un-intended. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. +++ PLAYLIST +++ · 22:56 – ANKLES von LUCY DACUS · 22:51 – RIDDLES OF MY YOUTH von LAUREL BLOOM · 22:49 – SINGLE FILE LINE von BOLDY JAMES · 22:46 – SUNDAY GIRL von BLONDIE · 22:42 – NARCISSIST von THE TUBS · 22:38 – YOU WERE THE ONES I HAD TO BETRAY von DEAN WAREHAM · 22:35 – WE MUST HAVE BEEN ASLEEP von AINO SALTO · 22:31 – BANG BANG BANG von SPORTS TEAM · 22:28 – OCEAN STEPPIN' von JOHN GLACIER FEAT. KEY TAKEAWAYS: [22:40] AI can be useful by using it to curate all the information that is at our fingertips that we waste so much time trying to sift through. If you can ask AI the right question, it can curate the information that you want to find online. [28:32] Social media has benefits for a musician, one being that you can get your music out there affordably and it can be heard all around the world. [37:25] For Britta, there is a big difference between singing in the studio and singing live for an audience. There is a feeling of being terrified, excited, vulnerable and exposed which gives her a big thrill. They have recorded several full-length albums and soundtracks. Their first two albums were produced by Tony Visconti (Bowie, T.Rex): L’Avventura in 2003 and Back Numbers in 2007. Their most recent release is the song “The Cloud is Coming,” which they wrote and performed for the Noah Baumbach film White Noise (they were also actors in the film). They live in Los Angeles. In addition to making records, Dean & Britta are active scoring films, notably Noah Baumbach’s The Squid & the Whale and Mistress America. They also composed songs and score for 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol Screen Tests, a project commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum, and continue to perform this multi-media show live in concert. Dean Wareham was the singer-songwriter-guitarist behind the Boston band Galaxie 500, who released three albums between 1987 and 1991. After this Dean went on to found NYC guitar band Luna, which released seven studio albums between 1992 and 2005. Luna disbanded in 2005 but reunited in 2015 and continue to perform live. His most recent album (2021) is I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A. Dean is also a published author — his memoir Black Postcards is a Penguin paperback. His most recent book — Hearing Voices — is a collection of selected lyrics, illustrated by artist Ed Templeton. Britta Phillips joined Luna on bass guitar in 1999, recording two albums with the band. She was formerly a member of the U.K. shoegaze band Belltower. She was also the singing voice of cartoon rocker Jem in the 1980s, and starred with Julia Roberts in Satisfaction, a film about an all-girl rock band. Britta released a solo album, Luck or Magic, in 2016. Ryder the Eagle BIO My name is Ryder The Eagle. I was born under the sign of Cancer in the south of France and like the planets predicted, I dedicated the beginning of my life to finding true love. Two EPs, a marriage and a divorce later, I embarked on a "Follymoon", an incandescent kind of a honeymoon where loneliness meets the folly of freedom. I traveled across the USA on the Greyhound bus, lugging my microphone along sidewalks and crossings, diners, and traffic lights. I spent two years in London crafting my break-up songs and sang them all over the globe supporting Adam Green, Jonathan Bree, and a few others. I ended up in Mexico City, where I’m currently living. I’m driving an old Chevy Caprice which I don’t have insurance for. My trunk is full of memories from a past that I can’t let go. One day I went to this Scottish town called Plean, unloaded everything, and wrote nine songs about it. So if you ever need a ride, I’ve got room in the car now - and we can play my first album on the stereo. Can’t wait to meet you.
Today's guest makes me feel velvety. And that works on a lot of levels here. Welcome Stan Demeski, drummer for The Feelies. They've released their first ever live album. But there isn't a Feelies song to be found on it. It's all Velvet Underground, all the time. But before we get there, Stan talks about his early days; being a product of New Jersey school bands, his early recording history, and how he started playing with The Feelies. He also talks about how the band was dropped by A&M records…in a fax! But after that, he landed a gig playing with the band Luna. He talks about how he met and began playing with Dean Wareham and the band. And after years of being disbanded, The Feelies reunited. And both Sonic Youth and REM played a big part in getting that done. All of this resulted in the bands new release on Bar None Records, Some Kinda Love. As stated earlier, it all live and all Velvet Underground covers. Stan also talks about the time the band played with Lou Reed! So check out Some Kinda Love on Bar None, wherever you listen to new music. Get updates on The Feelies Facebook and Instagram pages. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. On the show this time, it's the hypnotic rhythms and interlaced guitars of veteran New York rockers Luna. Luna is one of those bands that just sound right when you drop the needle on the record. They've been doing it for a long time. The band was started by Dean Wareham in 1991, after he quit the influential alt rock band Galaxie 500. There were a few lineup changes, and some life changes before it settled into the current lineup in 2000 - Dean, bassist Britta Philips, drummer Lee Wall and guitarist Sean Eden. The music would fit in a set with the Velvet Underground, Mercury Rev, and Spacemen 3. Their latest, 'A Sentimental Education,' is available on Double Feature Records and Bandcamp. Often side-project bands don't live up to the hype of the artist or band's main gig. But for Stephin Merritt, this isn't the case with several of his non-Magnetic Fields bands. With The 6ths, he's taken on the challenge of writing the songs but handing them over to guest vocalists. On the 1995 debut Wasps' Nests, that means a wide array of contributors, including Lou Barlow from Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr., Mary Timony of Helium and Ex Hex, Dean Wareham of Galaxie 500 and Luna, Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, Mac McCaughan of Superchunk, Mitch Easter of Let's Active, and more. The musical landscape shifts from song to song, one minute aping the motortik of Stereolab and next the harmony sunshine of Laurel Canyon in the 1970s. But it's all in Stephin Merritt's wheelhouse, utilizing an array of synth and keyboard sounds over minimalist rhythms that reveal layers upon repeated listens. Toronto-London based experimental group The Flowers Of Hell have announced that they will release their new album 'Keshakhtaran' via UK cult label Space Age Recordings (home to Spacemen 3, as well as Spectrum, Chapterhouse, Acid Mothers Temple and The Telescopes). Ahead of this, they present ‘Foray Through Keshakhtaran', the first taste of the trans-Atlantic group's first studio album in six years. A tripped out instrumental journey in two 20-minute parts, this record involves 20 artists, including special guests Rishi Dhir (Elephant Stone, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels, Beck) on sitar, Montreal harpist Sarah Pagé, and avant-accordion legend Angel Corpus Christi (Suicide, Spiritualized, Dean Wareham). Produced by the band's leader and composer Greg Jarvis, this album was mastered by Grammy recipient Peter J. Moore (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Joe Strummer). For the past 18 years, The Flowers Of Hell have traversed the experimental edges of indie, Classical and jazz, with music often rooted in the audio-visual synesthesia of the group's mastermind, Greg Jarvis. Despite relative obscurity, they have been championed by music legends such as Lou Reed, Sonic Boom, Kevin Shields and members of The Legendary Pink Dots, Death In Vegas, The Wedding Present, The Fugs and The Plastic People Of The Universe, not to mention support from NASA's mission control team and the Tate Gallery with an album installation and concert just a fortnight before London locked down. #NewMusic #Legends #Interview

When she hops on the call, Naomi Yang is still in the middle of an editing project. It's one she's not quite ready to talk about. At it for a little over a decade, filmmaking is a relatively recent passion, but she's managed to compile an impressive list of projects, including the 2013 short film Fortune and a number of music videos for artists including Marissa Nadler and Waxahatchee. An accomplished photographer, Yang also designs book covers for Exact Change, a publishing house she co-owns with partner, Damon Krukowski. But in amongst her myriad projects, she never strays too far from music. Along with Krukowski and Dean Wareham, Yang cofounded the short-lived, but extremely influential group, Galaxie 500. Since 1991, the pair have performed as Damon & Naomi, releasing their 9th album, A Sky Record, in August of last year.

This time on CounterPunch Radio, author and journalist Jacqueline Keeler joins Eric to discuss a range of critical issues affecting Native people in the US and Canada, including the ongoing struggle against pipelines and extractive industries, the impact of COVID on Native communities, the fight against native mascotry, and more. Jacqueline also helps reframe how we think of US history, the American Revolution and Founding Fathers, and the nature of the settler-colonial presence on this continent. Pop Talk etc... #7 Since its beginnings 12 years ago, the music of Cheval Sombre has always evolved between the sky and the depths of the earth... And it is to us, bipeds a little stuck in our uniforms, that the New Yorker Christopher Porpora comes from time to time to offer the result of his travels ... And this one is often overwhelming ... As if just out of a dream and still half awake, he takes us with him to explore new fields where, behind the sadness, the hoped-for light emerges persistently... Come and listen to a word here, a little there, a little elsewhere, and yet of a dazzling clarity ... Unique! Unique ! Support us!

Luna was a New York band formed in 1991 by singer/guitarist Dean Wareham after the breakup of Galaxie 500. The band made seven studio albums before disbanding in 2005. After a ten-year break, they reunited and toured in 2015, and in 2017 released a new LP — A Sentimental Education and an EP of instrumentals — A Place of Greater Safety. Other recent reissues include a deluxe 2xLP version of their classic Penthouse album (on Rhino) and another 2xLP set Lunafied that collects all the covers the band recorded in the 1990s. Now scattered around the country (Los Angeles, New York and Austin) the band retains the same lineup that operated from 1999 to 2005: Dean Wareham on vocals/guitar, his wife Britta Phillips on bass, Sean Eden on guitar, and Lee Wall on drums.
Dean Wareham sings about "not selling out but cashing in" plus the first new LP in 26 years from one of my old school faves! Also, hear Electric Six do The Jam from their excellent new covers album. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thebottomforty/support

Our guest is Howard Robot! Howard is the creator of My Robot Friend - a musical and performance art project from New York City - known for live performances in which he wears his homemade robot costume complete with flames, lights, shooting ping-pong balls and confetti! Howard is also a creative software developer designing and implementing web, desktop, and mobile applications. In this episode, we discuss the origin of My Robot Friend, his philosophy of what it means to be a robot, and learning about basic electrical theory (spoiler alert, it's shocking!) As well, Howard gives us his thoughts on how to fund a creative life while maintaining artistic freedom and the importance of pursuing F.I.R.E (Financial Independence Retire Early) in his life. Finally, he shares his insights on the ways in which creativity, collaboration and community overlap between software engineering and creating art. Intro song "By Your Side (feat. Galaxie 500. Luna. If you've never heard of these bands, don't worry, you're just most people. But to a small segment of the population, very little compares to the acquired taste of Dean Wareham's two bands and his guitar playing in particular. Join Christian and Martha as they explore Dean's Black Postcards, wherein Dean narrates the tragic demise of the former group, the mild success of the latter, and how falling in love with one's new bassist doesn't strengthen marital vows. This show features Ben Harrison. Ben is a unique guest. He has released his second album as the band Stutter Steps. But he’s also curator for the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. Through his job and his music, he’s had the opportunity to work with Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips of Dean & Britta, Luna, & Galaxie 500. Ben talks about the great Sound Series at the museum and what he does as a curator. He also talks about how the new Stutter Steps album differs from the debut and the role that Anthony LaMarca from The War on Drugs and St. Vincent had on the music. Follow Stutter Steps & the Andy Warhol museum on social media. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. I would love to see some new reviews, regardless of where you post them. Galaxie 500 & Luna special with Dean Wareham in conversation Guitarist Dean Wareham, drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang had met at the Dalton School in New York City in 1981, but began playing together during their time as students at Harvard University.Wareham and Krukowski had formed a series of punk-influenced student bands, before Wareham returned to New York. When he returned in 1987 he and Krukowski formed a new band, with Yang joining the group on bass guitar, the new group deciding on the name Galaxie 500, after a friend's car, a Ford Galaxie 500. The band began playing gigs in Boston and New York City, and recorded a demo which they sent to Shimmy Disc label boss and producer Mark Kramer, who agreed to produce the band. With Kramer at the controls, the band recorded the "Tugboat" single in February 1988, and the "Oblivious" flexi-disc, and moved on to record their debut album, Today, which was released on the small Aurora label. The band toured the United Kingdom in late 1988 and in 1989, then signed to Rough Trade and released their second album, On Fire, which has been described as "lo-fi psychedelia reminiscent of Jonathan Richman being backed by The Velvet Underground", and is considered the band's defining moment. On Fire reached number 7 in the UK Indie Chart, and met with much critical acclaim in the United Kingdom, but was less well received by the US music press, who cited Wareham's 'vocal limitations' as a weakness. Galaxie 500 recorded two sessions for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 programme, these later released on the Peel Sessions album. Their cover of Jonathan Richman's "Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste" was also voted into number 41 in 1989's Festive 50 by listeners to the show. The band split up in the spring of 1991 after the release of their third album, This Is Our Music. Wareham, who had already moved back to New York, quit the band after a lengthy American tour. Galaxie 500's records were released in the US and UK on the independent Rough Trade label. When Rough Trade went bankrupt in 1991, Krukowski and Yang purchased the masters at auction, reissuing them on Rykodisc in 1996 as a box set containing all three albums and another disc of rarities.

On today's episode I talk to musician Dean Wareham. Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, Dean's family moved to New York in 1977 when he was a teenager. In college at Harvard, he formed the seminal indie rock band Galaxie 500 with Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang. They recorded three albums - Today, On Fire and This Is Our Music, which were released on Rough Trade - but broke up in 1991, when he formed Luna. Luna was one of the biggest indie rock bands of the 1990s, and Elektra released many of their iconic albums including Lunapark, Bewitched, Penthouse, and Pup Tent. Currently, Dean writes music under his own name and with his wife Britta Phillips as Dean & Britta. The two have recorded a number of albums and scored a handful of Noah Baumbach films like The Squid and the Whale and Mistress America. In addition to all of this, Dean wrote a memoir of about his years in indie rock called Black Postcards. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy, from the Seventies to the Twenty-First Century (Dey Street Books) Following the musical innovations and cultural upheavals of the 1960s, rock music in the 1970s was in the doldrums: airwaves were dominated by mellow country-rock, earnest singer-songwriters, earth-toned hippie jam bands, and samey-sounding boogie outfits. Then flaring up against the drab denim-clad backdrop, there came glam: the first true teenage rampage of the new decade, a movement spearheaded by artists like David Bowie, Alice Cooper, T. Rex and Roxy Music, that reveled in artifice and spectacle. For the first time, Shock and Awe offers an introduction to a period packed with amazing music and magnetic characters, but also an accessible and entertaining cultural history situating glam rock in its social and political context. Breaking with the long-haired liberation generation, seventies glam celebrated illusion and artifice over truth and sincerity; it shunned the natural, organic, and wholesome in favor of the constructed and artificial. With intelligent, thoughtful analysis and commentary, Simon Reynolds pursues fresh angles on the central figures of glam—who inspired new heights of stage persona and fandom, even inspiring concert audiences to dress like the star performer—as well as other major artists who caught the theatricality of 70s glimmer. Shock and Awe focuses on the classic glam rock period, 1971-1975, but also the wider repercussions: the musical leaps, sensation and glamour as social movement, and the personality cult of pop. Exploring the genre’s major themesfame, androgyny, decadence, science fiction—Simon Reynolds tracks glam’s legacy as it unfolded across subsequent decades, ultimately showing how it prophesied 21st-century pop culture, with its obsessions with celebrity, extreme fashion statements, and theatrical excess. Simon Reynolds started his journalistic career in 1986 as a staff writer for the British weekly music paper Melody Maker. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Spin, Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Artforum, The Wire, The Guardian, Slate, Frieze and the Los Angeles Times. He is the author of four books and five collections of essays and interviews. His books have been translated into ten languages. Born in London, a resident of New York for most of the 90s and 2000s, he now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and children. Dean Wareham is a musician and writer. He was a founding member of indie rock bands Galaxie 500 and Luna, and his memoir Black Postcards was published by Penguin Press.

Culture Crash: The Killing of the Creative Class (Yale University Press) Rapid change is part of life in the twenty-first century, and we must all adjust to an evolving world. But for many thousands of creative artists, a torrent of recent changes has made it nearly impossible to earn a living. A persistent economic recession, social shifts, and technological change have combined to put our artists and those whose work supports them—from graphic designers to indie-rock musicians, from architects to booksellers—out of work. As a group, artists, writers, and musicians have never been rich, but for most of American history, Scott Timberg argues, they have been able to build modest middle class lives through diligent work. Today, even artists who are quite successful—musicians with loyal fans and respected albums, award-winning novelists, visual artists with work in museum collections, architects with national reputations—cannot hold onto the benefits of the middle class: stable housing, access to healthcare, and educational opportunities for their kids. Along with artists themselves, the institutions and structures that have traditionally supported them have been decimated. Publishers, booksellers, galleries, record and video stores, radio stations, and newspapers have hemorrhaged jobs in a world of instantly available digital content and music piracy. In addition to a brutal recession and a tidal wave of technology, Timberg examines other drivers of the crisis. Trends in academia have devalued literature, focusing instead on impenetrable theory. An avant garde that disdains “middlebrow” artistic production has led to a shrinking audience for art. Radio monopolies have homogenized the airwaves. The music industry has invested almost all resources in a tiny number of hitmakers. Perhaps most important, entrenched stereotypes of artists as idle dreamers or entitled bohemians, rather than hardworking, highly trained professionals, have made it hard for the broader society to see their vital economic and cultural contribution. Americans respond with more sympathy for job losses in the agrarian economy or in manufacturing than to similarly devastating losses in the creative economy. Timberg considers both the human costs and the unintended consequences for America if the people who create and support culture cannot stay in the middle class. When only the independently wealthy can afford to engage in creative pursuits, he warns, culture becomes more narrow, robbed of important and critical perspectives. When artists and artisans can't make a living, we all pay the price. Full of original reporting and thoughtful analysis, Culture Crash provides a sweeping overview of a very real crisis affecting real workers and their families as well as the broader culture. It is alarming and essential reading for anyone who works in a creative field, knows someone who does, or cares about the work artists produce. Praise for Culture Crash: “Scott Timberg has written an original and important study. He explores some of the most pressing cultural issues affecting the arts and intellectual life with remarkable clarity. This is the first analysis of our current culture from the bottom up—the precarious situation of the individual artists, writers, and musicians who are now struggling to survive.”—Dana Gioia, poet and former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts “I read Scott Timberg's pieces every week without fail. It's great to see his book Culture Crash debunk the mumbo jumbo about the long tail, file-sharing, free information, and positive thinking —and take a hard look at what it all means for artists, musicians, critics and teachers.”—Dean Wareham, lead singer of Luna and author of Black Postcards: A Memoir “We've all had the feeling of these enormous changes—long in the making, not ‘at the last minute'—but Scott Timberg has the synthesis that makes them make sense. Culture Crash throws a clear, defining light on the squeeze that digitally-based economies have put on our artists, the analog makers who have always defined us to ourselves. A hugely important book.”—Sven Birkerts, author of The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age “With coolness and equanimity, Scott Timberg tells what in less-skilled hands could have been an overwrought horror story: the end of culture as we have known it. He mourns the loss of independent book- and record-store clerks who evangelized for quality. He grieves for artists' ‘day jobs', which allowed creative workers a toehold in the middle-class. Culture Crash is an urgent, necessary book (or eBook) for anyone who has ever been moved by a song, a film, a paragraph or a painting. Without the humanities, Timberg cautions, we may lose our humanity.”—M.G. Lord, author of Forever Barbie and The Accidental Feminist Scott Timberg is a Los Angeles-based culture writer, contributing writer for Salon, and onetime LA Times arts reporter who has contributed to The New York Times, GQ, and The Hollywood Reporter. He is the co-editor, along with Dana Gioia, of the anthology The Misread City: New Literary Los Angeles. A graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he runs ArtsJournal's CultureCrash blog and lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son. Janet Fitch is the author of the novels Paint It Black and White Oleander. Her short stories and essays have appeared in anthologies and journals such as Black Clock, Room of One's Own, and Los Angeles Noir, and she is a contributing editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books. A film version of Paint It Black has been recently shot in Silverlake and downtown. She is currently finishing a novel set during the Russian Revolution. Her publisher, Little Brown, owned by Hachette Book Group, went 14 rounds with marketing giant Amazon last year.
