Born on June 16, 1965, in Carthage, Missouri, Javon Jackson was raised in Denver, Colorado and chose saxophone at the age of 10. At age 16 he switched from alto to tenor and later enrolled at the University of Denver before spending part of 1985–86 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He left Berklee in 1986 to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he later played alongside pianist Benny Green, trumpeter Philip Harper, trombonist Robin Eubanks and bassist Peter Washington. Jackson remained a fixture in the Jazz Messengers until Blakey's passing in 1990. In 1991, Jackson made his recording debut with Me and Mr. Jones, featuring James Williams, Christian McBride, and master drummer Elvin Jones. He joined Jones' group in 1992, appearing on the great drummer's albums Youngblood and Going Home. Jackson's 1994 Blue Note debut, When the Time Is Right, was a straight-ahead affair produced by iconic jazz vocalist and bandleader Betty Carter. His subsequent four recordings for the Blue Note label through the ‘90s were produced by Craig Street and featured wildly eclectic programs ranging from Caetano Veloso, Frank Zappa and Santana to Muddy Waters, Al Green and Serge Gainsbourg. His subsequent four recordings for the Palmetto label had him exploring a blend of funk, jazz and soul with such stellar sidemen as organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, guitarists Mark Whitfield and David Gilmore, trombonist Fred Wesley and drummer Lenny White. In 2009, Javon was commissioned by the Syracuse International Film Festival to compose a full-length score for the Alfred Hitchcock film, “The Lodger,” a silent movie based on the hunt for Jack the Ripper. The original score had its debut at the festival, performed live by Jackson's band (featuring pianist Manasia) at the film's screening in October 2010. In 2012, the saxophonist released a potent tribute to a towering influence, Celebrating John Coltrane, his inaugural release on his Solid Jackson Records which featured the venerable drummer and former Coltrane collaborator Jimmy Cobb. He followed later in 2012 with Lucky 13, which featured the great soul-jazz keyboardist Les McCann and included a mellow instrumental rendition of Stevie Wonder's “Don't You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” along with a version of McCann's 1969 hit, “Compared to What.” That same remarkably productive year, Jackson was the recipient of the prestigious Benny Golson Award from Howard University in Washington, D.C. for recognition of excellence in jazz. Jackson's debut on the Smoke Sessions label, 2014's Expression, was a live quartet recording from the Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in Upper Manhattan. On February 18, 2022, Javon will release, The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni, his fifth album for his Solid Jackson Records label. Jackson finished and received his undergraduate degree from the Berklee College of Music and obtained a master's degree from the State University of New York at Purchase, where he also taught. In 2013, he accepted the position of Professor of Jazz Saxophone; Director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz Studies at the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music, Theatre and Dance. In this episode, Javon shares his background, education, and musical journey. It had to happen.  The bastards came of jazz-age in the eighties and nineties - an era when young lions roamed the earth (and the mall record bins) and, sooner or later, attention must be paid.  What to say about this last gasp of mainstream, corporate approved jazz before the collapse of the majors?  Oh, so very very much.  So much in fact that some of the ranting had to be tagged on to the ending just to avoid sinking the ship.  Pop matters?  Old 97s and early Kraftwerk . . .  Marcus Roberts - BLUES FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM; Mark Whitfield – TRUE BLUE; Kenny Kirkland – KENNY KIRKLAND; Nicholas Payton – FROM THIS MOMENT

Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter Christian McBride is one of the most widely recorded bass players in jazz. He’s been on more than 300 albums as a sideman, and has won six Grammys. This year alone, he’s put out three major projects. In February, he released The Movement Revisited, a large-scale project that paints sonic portraits of Black political and cultural icons Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali and Barack Obama, mixing orchestral jazz with narration. It was first put together in 1998, covering just the first four people, and then revised a decade later, adding a fifth section about Obama and generally rewriting the whole piece. In July, he appeared on saxophonist Joshua Redman’s album RoundAgain, with Brad Mehldau on piano and Brian Blade on drums. This was the same set of players who made Redman’s album MoodSwing in 1994, which I remember was one of the first jazz albums I bought by a young musician; before that, I was mostly buying classic old albums by players who were either dead or long past their prime. And finally, he made For Jimmy, Wes And Oliver, a big band album with guests Joey DeFrancesco on organ and Mark Whitfield on guitar, which is coming out this week. Obviously, a guy like McBride, who’s played with basically everyone, has a million stories to tell. I particularly wanted to ask him about one show that I saw him at, which was Sonny Rollins’ 80th birthday concert at the Beacon Theatre 10 years ago, where they were joined by Ornette Coleman and Roy Haynes. And believe me, he has stories about Rollins. And beyond making music and talking about music, he’s also the artistic director for the Newport Jazz Festival, and he his wife run a jazz program for kids in New Jersey, Jazz House Kids, so we talk about how that’s been impacted by COVID-19 and what they see as the future of the program and of jazz education. Something else interesting is that he’s an interviewer himself – he hosts a radio show where he talks to other jazz musicians. So we talk a little bit about that, too. Electric and double bass man, George Farmer, is a player with an all new blend. He began his musical training at a young age, receiving his earliest musical lessons from his father, legendary jazz trumpeter Art Farmer. In a house filled with American Soul as well as classical music, Farmer benefited from a unique blend of musical influences and began playing the electric and upright basses at the same time. With a curriculum that included conservatory training at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, private study, and a demanding live performance schedule, Farmer absorbed everything from Schubert's Serenades to Bootsy's Rubberband bass grooves.Farmer moved permanently to the United States in 1997 and soon began getting calls for high profile dates. His first gigs in New York City included the "Young Lions of Jazz" ensemble with Delfeayo Marsalis and Mark Whitfield, as well as serving as the musical director for California based producer, Don Freeman (The Pointer Sisters, Bill Withers). In the year 2000, Farmer became the bass player for the legendary, Benny Golson. Farmer toured in Europe and the U.S. with Golson, and recorded on the 2000 Legend Recordings release, "The Athens Sessions".Meanwhile, Farmer has become a sought after sideman and studio musician stateside as well as in Europe. In the year 2001, Farmer spent 3 months touring with Wolfgang Ambros, one of Europe's most beloved rock stars, and Farmer also recorded on Ambros' certified-gold album, "Hopelessly Self-conscious," that same year. He returned to Europe the following summer, where he played with world renowned vocalist, Natalie Cole. In 2003 Farmer signed on as the bass player for 2004 Grammy-nominated Artist, Amel Larrieux. Featured on both electric and upright basses, Farmer's playing on Larrieux's sophomore album "Bravebird" (Warner Brothers) is a focal point. Since the album's release in 2003, he has toured Japan and the United States with Larrieux, while still maintaining a busy performance and recording schedule that includes performances with emerging artist, Darius DeHaas, as a part of the "American Songbook: Stevie Wonder" Series at Lincoln Center.George's love for accompanying singers led him to him to become a first-call player for numerous Broadway shows (Spring Awakening, Memphis, Fun Home, to name just a few), and he currently holds the bass chair for the Broadway smash Ain’t Too Proud.George’s websiteGeorge Farmer on InstagramGeorge Farmer on Facebook"Ain't Too Proud" websiteSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9JCBNUCRNRVKY&source=url)

When you see a live show you should keep in mind that the venue is going to dictate your experience. Often smaller venues provide a more intimate experience with the chance to really interact with the performers. Large arena concerts can be fun, but often the experience is dependent on your seats (pit vs. lawn, etc.) and the people you went with. The guys talk about specific venues from jazz clubs to warehouses to theaters to arenas. Aaron talks about his experience at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. Joe talks about the differences between the music festivals he has attended, from Bonnaroo, Firefly, Lockn, All Points West, and many local festivals. Different vibes, different lineups, different camping situations, different experiences. With so many different live music options available to us, there is no excuse to not get out there and see a show! Mark Whitfield is one of the most highly regarded jazz guitarists alive today. Throughout his career, he’s collaborated with legendary artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, George Benson, and many others. In 1990 the New York Times dubbed Whitfield “The Best Young Guitarist in the Business”. Later that year, Warner Bros. released his debut album The Marksman. I reached out to Mark after working on a transcription from one of the tracks from this album: The Blues From Way Back, a jazz guitar blues I’ve been featuring lately on my website. In the interview, you’ll learn about… - Mark’s special relationship with the blues, and how he’s naturally been drawn to incorporating it into his jazz style. - Mark’s journey with jazz guitar, studying at Berklee College of Music, sessions at the Blue Note in New York, and beyond - Mark’s thoughts on how to learn jazz guitar to make solid progress, regardless of the time you have for practice. - The essential ingredients of an effective and rewarding jazz guitar practice session - How Mark met Joe Pass as a young man, leading to one of the most important (and unusual!) jazz guitar masterclasses he ever had. Here's how it works: Usually transcriptions are tough technically, so learning a transcription is a great way to build up your technique. You'll learn a wealth of jazz vocabulary that fits well together, giving you plenty of new ideas to bring into your own playing. Learning a transcription is the best way by far to train your ears – especially if you transcribe a recording from scratch. By playing a transcription along with the original recording it was transcribed from, you'll get a sense of how to add shape to your own solos – i.e., how to structure the rise and fall of a solo in order to tell a captivating musical story. The last point is particularly important. If you just learn jazz guitar licks in isolation, without listening to the lick in the context of the full solo it came from, you won't get a well-rounded picture on how to the lick effectively as you improvise. Here's the thing: Even if you end up only delving into a few licks from a transcription after you learn the full solo, these licks act as a kind of ‘trigger' in your mind for the general vocabulary and approaches contained in the complete transcription. So, learning a transcription is a very effective way to learn a huge amount of jazz vocabulary in a short space of time. Convinced? Good. So let's now dig into the transcription itself… The Blues, From Way Back The Blues, from Way Back is a track from Mark Whitfield's debut album The Marksman, which catapulted him to international recognition in the 90s after he graduated from Berklee College of Music. Why did I want to transcribe this recording? This solo is probably the best example of jazz guitar blues I've come across, so I was keen to study this one intensely in order to get a more authentic jazz blues sound into my improvised lines. Here's the original recording of The Blues, from Way Back on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/embed/HtG9zqlnACk What I particularly like about this solo is how seamlessly Mark Whitfield weaves traditional blues ideas between sophisticated bebop vocabulary. Learning this solo has also been a great technique builder for my own playing. Both the bluesy licks and the bebop lines are classic pieces of vocabulary that are really worthwhile to work into your own playing. Presenting The Complete Jazz Guitar Blues Transcription! So here it is: The complete transcription of Mark Whitfield's first solo from The Blues, from Way Back. Watch the video to get a demonstration of the fingerings I used to play the solo, then read through the notation and TAB of the transcription below. (Hint: If you want a print-friendly PDF of the transcription, click here to access it now). Note: Fast-forward the video to 5:00 in for a close-up slow-motion view of my hands as I play the solo (if you nee...
