Henry Johnson quite simply is a guitarist's, guitarist. I can amplify that by saying that he is the guitarist that I have had the most requests to interview - “Hey, have you ever thought about Henry Johnson, he's amazing”! I heard it a hundred times... I have known of Henry for a long time and admired his playing and wanted to get him in Jazz Guitar Today - but our roads kept missing each other. I was so happy that we finally put it together. Henry has a fantastic resume playing with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Stitt, Stanley Turrentine, and Joe Williams, WOW! He is an educator, an artist, and a gentleman! He is from my era and influenced by lots of the same people and likes a lot of the same music. It is with great pride that we bring to you this conversation with the great Henry Johnson.Go to jazzguitartoday.com and bassmusicianmagazine.com more interviews and lessons.

In Part 1 of their interview Lou tells us how he got started in the business and why he took up the Saxophone. Today we have Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, who is perhaps best known for co-discovering all three familial early-onset Alzheimer's disease genes. In addition, Rudy's lab was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional human brain organoids and three-dimensional neural-glial culture models of Alzheimer's disease, which became known as “Alzheimer's-in-a-Dish.” These models were the first to recapitulate all three of the key pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease and have made drug screenings faster and cheaper. Rudy is the director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit as well as the director of the Henry and Allison McCance Center for Brain Health. Rudy is also co-Director of the Massachusetts General Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Rudy has published more than 700 research papers and is one of the top 50 most cited neuroscientists in the world. He is author of “Decoding Darkness,” and a co-author of two books with Deepak Chopra, “Super Brain” and “The Healing Self.” Show notes: [00:03:18] Ken opens the interview mentioning that Rudy began playing the accordion when he was just seven years old. Ken goes on to ask Rudy about the time his father gave him a Jimmy Smith album and some advice. [00:05:51] Ken mentions that, in addition to Rudy's musical talents, he was also interested in science growing up. Ken asks about Rudy's participation in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search and what that experience was like. [00:07:09] Ken asks Rudy about growing up in Cranston, Road Island. [00:08:39] Rudy talks about how he ended up at the University of Rochester after high school. [00:09:51] Ken mentions that both Rudy's grandfather and father passed away at the age of 45. Ken asks Rudy if this played a role in his pursuit of a career in genetics research. [00:10:57] Rudy explains how he chose Harvard Medical School for his Ph.D. [00:12:47] Ken pivots to ask Rudy about his time working with Jim Gusella in the early 80's at Mass General, where they were the first to ever find a disease gene. Family studies at the time had shown that the Huntington's disease gene was linked to a polymorphic DNA marker. Rudy talks about this discovery and how the chromosomal localization of the Huntington's disease gene was the first step in using recombinant DNA technology to identify the primary genetic defect in this disorder. [00:16:07] Ken asks Rudy about his work in 1987, when he discovered the first Alzheimer's gene, recombinant DNA technology, which causes the production of amyloid. Ken goes on to explain that mutations in the APP gene can cause a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's. Rudy talks about the paper that came out in “Science” that detailed this discovery. [00:18:38] Rudy discusses his personal philosophy and approach to research. [00:19:43] Ken mentions that in Rudy's book, Decoding Darkness, he writes that few nightmares on Earth can compare to Alzheimer's disease. Ken asks Rudy to talk more about this book. [00:21:50] Ken explains that in the same way our physical capabilities will suffer some form of decline with age, it is also expected that we have some decline in memory and cognitive ability as we age as well. However, Ken goes on to say that when people begin to experience age-related memory lapses, it can lead to a lot of anxiety about their genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's. Ken asks Rudy to talk about the lifestyle factors that play into whether someone predisposed to develop Alzheimer's can stave off or avoid disease development. [00:26:09] Ken explains that aging appears to intensify when people stop challenging themselves with new things. Given this, Ken asks Rudy what his thoughts are on challenging our brains as they age to protect our cognitive abilities. [00:29:08] Ken asks Rudy about the principal advances in...

The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla
Episode 273 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block of episodes on the most famous of Brett Favre's backups. After a 1990 season which saw Brunell lead Washington to a PAC-10 title, many believed the Rose Bowl MVP quarterback would lead the Huskies to an undefeated season in 1991. Unfortunately, a knee injury in spring practice derailed Brunell's 1991 season. He lost his starting job to Billy Joe Hobert, and Washington won a share of the National Championship. Brunell regained his starting job in 1992 after Hobert was suspended, and Green Bay took a chance on the athletic signal-caller in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. Though Brunell did not see much playing time his first two pro seasons, he flourished after he was traded (the first ever trade in franchise history) to the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars before the 1995 season. It did not take long for Brunell & the Jaguars to find success in the NFL. By the end of 1996, Brunell led the league in passing yards, led the Jaguars to their first postseason berth, upset both Buffalo and Denver on the road in the playoffs and made the franchise's first AFC Championship Game. One of the league's best teams during the late 1990s, Brunell led a lethal passing attack complimented by Keenan McCardell & Jimmy Smith. It was also during his career with the Jaguars (1995-2003) that Brunell made all three of his Pro Bowls. The crafty left-hander then spent the next four seasons starting with Washington (2004-2007). He followed his stint with the Redskins as a backup in New Orleans (2008-2009) where he won a Super Bowl after the 2009 season. Finally, Brunell rounded out his pro career as a backup with the New York Jets (2010-2011). Presently, Brunell is back in the NFL as the Quarterbacks Coach of the Detroit Lions. What does it sound like miked in the bathtub? Matt talked about being at Strongroom Studios, tape flying off the machine, why you need hardware synths, MDing for Björk and Ellie Goulding, how to record ambient music, and why real guitar pedals rock! Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Matt Robertson, a British-born, Canadian-based, 3x Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director. Matt has worked with Björk, Anohni, Arca, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Ellie Goulding as musical director and orchestrator / arranger. He has released four albums under his own name to date, balancing ambient sound design alongside warm organic techno and ripples of delicate electronics. His albums ‘Forecast', ‘In Echelon' and ‘Entology', have been described as “symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that's cinematic in scale” (Mixmag), “magnificent…wild, electronic sound” (The Line Of Best Fit) and “Nils Frahm's modern classical meets Jon Hopkins' grainy techno” (MOJO). Growing up listening to a healthy mixture of Jean-Michel Jarre and Jimmy Smith, Matt graduated from the University of Surrey before working at recording studios in London learning how to fix, and later build, some of his own synths. Working with a collection of vintage, modern and DIY synths, and combining electronic music production with classical composition and cinematic soundscapes; artists, producers, and film composers alike seek his enveloping and distinct sound. His work with Anoushka Shankar awarded him 2 Grammy nominations, and he recently scored the films ‘The New Corporation – The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel', and' ‘Navalny'. Episode 115. Join host Troy Saunders as he chats with writer, producer, multi instrumentalist, pianist, Jesse Thompson!Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, known in music circles as the land of funk, Jesse Thompson couldn't help but be influenced by the city's great R&B pioneers – including Slave, Ohio Players, Lakeside and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. For the past 20 years, the multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist manifested these inspirations – and helped bring the legacies of these legendary bands forward – as a former member of the popular and prolific, constantly gigging Columbus-based R&B/jazz ensemble NexLevel.Unlike many longtime band members and sidemen who work towards someday expressing themselves as solo artists, Thompson was content with his existing whirlwind of activity playing with others. But when the pandemic hit, he instinctively used his down time to, as he says, “sow a seed of happiness” to create “Weekend Groove” – an irrepressible Next-Gen disco vibin' house beat driven track featuring flutist Althea Rene and a horn section by Kelly O'Donohue that ultimately became the lead single to his uniquely titled debut album The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys). Though its dance floor ready lead single “Weekend Groove” will immediately spark excitement and lift the spirits just as Jesse Thompson intended, there are a multitude of other pleasures to experience on The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys) – an album which truly rolls like an autobiographical blend of his many influences, from those Dayton funk legends to George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample and Brian Culbertson. The album's latest single “It Doesn't Matter” is a sensual, easy grooving romantic joint featuring Thompson interacting with #1 Billboard charting trumpeter Lin Rountree – who he connected with via mutual connections at the individual HBCU schools they attended. As a showcase for Thompson's great talents on Fender Rhodes (creating a moody effect and his sparkling acoustic piano, the song taps into Thompson's love of Joe Sample's vibe both with the Crusaders and as a solo artist. The elegant funk ballad “The Right One Baby” offers a similar seductive duality. Troy highlighted three song from this incredible project "Weekend Grove", Obsidian, and "It Doesn't Matter".Being the son of a father who was a professional jazz drummer and a mother who was a church organist/pianist, Jesse Thompson – aka “JTJazz” came by his musical gifts naturally and started playing the drums as his first instrument at the age of five. By the time JT was twelve years old, he played a total of thirteen instruments, the piano being one of them. In addition to his parents, he was influenced by his oldest brother Marvyn Wheatley, who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave. Thompson spent time with his brothers in the studio hanging out with Slave, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Steve Arrington and othersThese experiences truly fueled his musical passions and ambitions. While he studied manufacturing engineering and IT at Central State University (in Wilberforce, OH), he played in the school's marching band and jazz ensemble and joined the national honorary band of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity. His other influences include Alex Bugnon, Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Jeff Lorber, James Lloyd and Bob James.Troy and Jesse discusses Jesse's musical bucket list, future endeavors giving back and more.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Nueva entrega de la serie Hits del Billboard recordando canciones que alcanzaron su puesto más alto en listas de EEUU en este mismo mes de hace 60 años. Todas estas canciones, aunque fuesen de muy distintos estilos, pasaron a convertirse en la música popular del momento. Buena andanada de bandas británicas, con The Animals haciendo cima con su primer single en EEUU. Roy Orbison se reconsolida como icono del pop y Chuck Berry se despide de las listas con el que será su último éxito en años.
