My guest today is Ari Hoenig — drummer, composer, educator, and all-around wizard behind the kit. Ari is known for his melodic, almost vocal approach to the drums, especially his ability to bend pitch and bring out distinct note choices on the instrument in a way that sounds nearly impossible. He's collaborated with artists like Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Joshua Redman, and many others, but it's his own solo work that really puts a spotlight on his creative spirit. In this episode, Ari walks through five records that helped shape his unique voice — from the expressive swing of Papa Jo Jones to the unconventional phrasing of Thelonious Monk. We also dive into Ari's early classical roots, why Keith Jarrett changed his musical DNA, and how he began developing his signature melodic drumming approach. Hope you enjoy the five records that shaped Ari Hoenig into the deeply expressive and fiercely original musician he is today. For the first time ever, we're digging into an album Peter actually played on. In this episode, we go deep on Spirit of the Moment, saxophonist Joshua Redman's 1995 double-CD live album, recorded at the legendary Village Vanguard, with Peter on piano, drummer Brian Blade, and bassist Chris Thomas. We explore how Redman rose to stardom in the '90s, stories from Peter's New Orleans trio days, and what it's like to be onstage for a now-classic recording. Plus: crowd gasps, Josh's nods to Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and his father Dewey Redman, the art of laying out, and why this record still inspires a specific crowd of 17-year old jazz pianists 30 years later.

Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra.  In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean.  Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.  Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year.  Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art.    Some Things That Came Up:  -2:30 Kris's multi genre style  -3:00 Rabid fans  -4:45 The Umphrey's McGee audition turned into a 21 year gig and counting -6:30 Kris's previous band was Kick The Cat  -11:00 Maintaining a list of all the venues the band has played  -11:30 Red Rocks is fave venue as well as The Fox Theater in Oakland and The Ryman in Nashville -14:00 Vic Salazar !!! You won't want to miss our interview with this highly creative and versatile artist!  https://www.mariogrigorov.com/In an intimate conversation with the illustrious film composer and pianist Mario Grigorov, we peel back the curtain on the sometimes spontaneous, sometimes painstaking art of musical invention. Mario shares with us the beauty of yielding to the subconscious mind in composition, and reminisces about the thrilling unpredictability of jazz tours, which taught him that the most genuine artistic expression often comes from the chaos of live performance.Navigating the film industry's tides can be akin to hitchhiking through a desert of creativity, not knowing where the next ride might take you. Mario Grigorov lays bare the professional trials and triumphs he's encountered in shaping his cinematic sound. With a blend of humor and hard-earned wisdom, he discusses the pitfalls of revisiting past compositions and emphasizes the importance of crafting music that adheres to the unique vision of each film. His stories reveal the sometimes heart-wrenching, sometimes liberating discovery that a piece rejected from a movie might just be the seed for a new musical endeavor. We round off our chat with an exploration of the personal hurdles artists face, the doubts that can derail us, and the missed opportunities that come from playing it safe. Mario opens up about instances when his own hesitations led to lost chances, offering a candid reminder of the importance of faith in one's work. He encourages emerging creators to absorb the lessons etched by the successes of others and underscores the profound impact that sharing our art can have not just on our audiences, but on our own spiritual paths. Join us for this heartfelt exchange that is as much an ode to the art of music as it is a call to action for artists to embrace their craft boldly and share it with the world.

What does it mean to pick a winner in jazz? We're considering that question in the wake of the Herbie Hancock Jazz Piano Competition, which Nate covered in New York City. The subject leads us to a discussion of the competitive tradition in this music, which extends from Kansas City jam sessions to Jazz at the Philharmonic Tours to the present day. Nobody has a more nuanced handle on the topic than Joshua Redman, who hit the ground running when he won the Thelonious Monk Jazz Saxophone Competition 30 years ago. International political consultant Alon Pinkas joins us. Then, each song in the new album "Where Are We" by acclaimed jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman is about a place — from New England to Alabama, from Philadelphia to Phoenix. Gregory "Hutch" Hutchinson is one of the most highly regarded and highly recorded jazz drummers on the planet. Part of what makes him so special is that he sits at the crossroads of the old school and the new school. He was mentored by old jazz masters like Red Rodney, Ray Brown and Betty Carter. He worked extensively with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove, among many other innovative jazz musicians of his generation. He has also collaborated with the likes of Common, Karriem Riggins and James Poyser, all practitioners of a new school rhythm approach, influenced by pioneering producer J Dilla.  Hutch is able to summon the spirit authentically from both sides because both are part of his personal truth. But until now he has not been a recording artist. Now, at 53 years of age, after having played with everybody, he is releasing his debut solo record Da Bang, and it is not necessarily what one might have expected. Rooted in the jazz tradition, the album demonstrates Hutchinson's versatility, dynamism, and imagination. It may be unexpected, but as Hutch will tell you, it's coming straight from the heart, and the songs are as much a reflection of the way he feels as they are of the way he plays. Here he talks about growing up in Brooklyn, playing drums as a boy, his mentors, the importance of personal style and of friendship among musicians, his next phase (“this is Hutch 3.0”) and his favorite drummers. He casually invokes so many names that talking to Hutch is like a master class in the music, and you can feel how important it is to him to recognize the contributions of those who came before him, and to place his own contribution within that context. John began playing drums at the age of 5 in Oakland California. Oakland proved to be a perfect incubator for John as he thrived playing in many of the school, community, rock, jazz, and funk bands in the area. This experience gave John a diverse background that continues to serve him well today. Early in his career, John was playing in local bands opening for such diverse acts as George Benson, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who (two North American tours), and many more. John's reputation quickly grew and he found himself playing with San Francisco/Oakland bay area legends including Joshua Redman, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power), and Miles Davis band alumni Barry Finnerty, Garth Webber, and Benny Rietveld. John continued to cast his net as wide as possible. He began getting calls from New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, and New Orleans to audition with such artists as Pee Wee Ellis, Stephen Jenkins (Third Eye Blind), Cake, and many more. These experiences gave John national exposure which has led to local, touring, and/or studio dates with Josh Groban, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Pat Benatar, Steve Miller, Booker T., Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Oz Noy and many more. John has played multiple productions of Hamilton in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Puerto Rico and tours and records with Carl Verheyen. In this episode, John talks about: The resume he amassed in the Bay Area before moving to LA Thinking of different theatre shows as different “dialects” His experience of playing multiple productions of Hamilton Getting called out by his musical director for going on auto pilot The process of constant refinement over the course of a show The broader palate he gets to use with Carl Verheyen
