Technology was already a huge timesaver for trucking carriers. Then came the coronavirus. The outbreak created more market volatility and simultaneously forced trucking to operate in a different — socially distanced — manner. All of which makes trucking technology even more important. How Nashville, Tennessee-based C&N Deliveries uses the technology solutions of Bloom Global offers a case in point.C&N CEO and founder Nicole Clemons spoke with FreightWaves Director of Market Intelligence Zach Strickland in a “Technology in Action” talk during the FreightWaves Carrier Summit . Five years ago, Thomas E. Keller Trucking, a unit of Defiance, Ohio-based Keller Logistics, was dissatisfied with its carrier benchmarking efforts and found itself in the lower quadrant of carriers in terms of measuring its performance. That changed when Keller joined the carrier benchmarking initiative of the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Profitability Program (TPP), said Jonathan Wolfrum, the unit’s president. Today, the unit is growing its top line, and is doing so quite profitably, Wolfrum told Todd Davis, FreightWaves’ vice president of customer success and benchmarking, during the second day of the FreightWaves Carrier Summit. Much of the turnaround, Wolfrum said, can be attributed to superior benchmarking processes built out through Keller’s participation in the TPP program. FreightWaves supports the program through ownership and support of its inGauge online benchmarking platform. ArticleFreightWaves virtual eventsApple PodcastsSpotifyMore FreightWaves Podcasts

For-hire truck drivers are mostly staying with their employers at current pay during the coronavirus pandemic. They are eager for stability in an uncertain time. That is the finding of the National Transportation Institute, which tracks driver pay and retention through surveys of hundreds of fleets.“Turnover is at record lows at most fleets we survey,” Leah Shaver, CEO of the Institute, said during a WavesTalk on the second day of the virtual FreightWaves Carrier Summit on Thursday.Unlike 2018, a banner year for driver pay as spot rates soared amid super-heated freight demand, 2020 shows “no meaningful upward movement” in driver pay. Sign-on bonuses are unnecessary because fleets aren’t doing a lot of recruiting. Two years ago, many drivers jumped from carrier to carrier to collect the cash. Driver turnover reached 100%. The coronavirus crisis has forced Ruan Transportation Management Systems to become more creative and flexible in responding to customer needs. Customers, in turn, are more willing to try new services they would have shunned before, the company’s president says. “We’re finding some more efficient or lower cost ways of doing things that perhaps were taboo in the past,” such as centralized billing or on-site support, “and perhaps exorcising some demons,” President Dan Van Alstine said Thursday during the virtual FreightWaves Carrier Summit to FreightWaves President George Abernathy. In this special episode of Recruit and Retain, coming from the FreightWaves Carrier Summit, Chad talks with Max Farrell, CEO and co-founder of WorkHound, the real time feedback platform for over 35,000 drivers across the US. Companies in the trucking industry use WorkHound to help improve their driver retention. But just how do you engage with drivers during a downmarket? What can you do to weather the current storm? “There aren't best practices about how to connect with drivers you had to lay off in the middle of the pandemic. And so you have to try new things right now and experiment and innovate on the fly, because there's no manual for this.” In this insightful episode, Chad and Max share lots of easily implementable tips to help carriers continue to grow despite the recession: from knowing what KPIs carriers should be measuring, to how to engage with drivers during a pandemic, and building a driver alumni network. What you’ll learn about in this episode: The issue of measuring vanity metrics The metrics that show the retention of quality drivers Understanding turnover to reduce it Recruitment tactics to engage in a down market Soft layoffs and building an alumni program Pay for retention, not just recruitment How to connect with [Max Farrell]: LinkedIn - Max Farrell Twitter - @MaxOnTheTrack
If a trucking company wants to attract drivers in their 20s and 30s, the company can’t just say how it offers all the bells and whistles: great equipment, great pay and a lot of home time. It has to show a prospective driver what makes working for that company truly special and unique, according to Sadie Church, vice president of marketing for CDLIFE who was joined by FreightWaves' Andrew Cox.“The only thing you can do is identify what sets you apart from other companies, what makes you different, what makes you unique. And really show the drivers that. Show them what good home time looks like. Show them what good equipment looks like,” Church said as a guest in a virtual fireside chat during the FreightWaves Carrier Summit on Wednesday.ArticleFreightWaves virtual eventsApple PodcastsSpotifyMore FreightWaves Podcasts
