Marccus Hendricks, associate professor at the University of Maryland and director of the Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience and Justice Lab, joins People Behind the Plans for a wide-ranging conversation on disaster resilience, environmental justice, and the current challenges facing the planning profession. Drawing on his upbringing in Dallas, his scholarship on flood risk and infrastructure inequity, and his experience as a senior adviser for Climate and Community Resilience in the Biden administration, Hendricks explores the roots of social vulnerability and the role planning plays in shaping health, safety, and opportunity. He also shares a path to planning via public health and emergency medicine, and namechecks some of his planning heroes, like Shannon Van Zandt, Walt Peacock, Lori Peek, Dennis Mileti, Norma and Bill Anderson, John T. Cooper Jr., and Philip Berke. “My mentors were studying the aftermath of disasters and I wanted to get after the root causes of how we got here. Individuals and groups who live at the social and economic margins of our society are the least likely to be able to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from environmental hazards. “ — Marccus Hendricks Hendricks shares how cuts to federal planning programs and research funding are affecting planners, students, and academic institutions, and why retreating from hard truths poses a risk to the future of the field. And he offers candid advice to students and local planners navigating uncertainty, emphasizing the enduring power of community-centered work and action at the local level. Lambert, Hendricks & Ross: Deck us all with Boston Charlie The Andrew Sisters: Jing-a-ling, jing-a-ling Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong: Now you has Jazz Niels Jörgen Steen 4tet: Sleigh ride Niels Jörgen Steen 4tet: The Christmas song Marijn Ouwehand en Ruud Ouwehand: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Johnny Mercer & the pied pipers: Santa Claus is coming to town Dickie Valentine: Snowbound for Christmas Brandford Marsalis en Harry Connick Jr.: Some children see Him Harry Connick Jr.: Christmas dreaming Peggy Lee: It's Christmas time again George Shearing quintet: Ding dong merrily on high Rob van Bavel: I'm dreaming of a white Christmas Aan tafel in deze TORcast: Bas Ouwehand, Ruud Ouwehand, Marijn Ouwehand, Miriam Kroeze, Esther Hageraats en Willem Habers. Mac Kiel in studio with the latest update on La Crosse hiring a city administrator and the recent conversations around that, plus the sale of the Charmant to billionaire Diane Hendricks and what that might mean for downtown. We discuss city administrator a couple different times during the show, first talking about the council structure — plus Kiel geeking out on seating charts — and the idea of adding amendments to the city administrator legislation. Later in the show we talk about the city council working group studying the administrator position and presenting that info to the council. With the Charmant sale to Hendricks, we talk a bit about her work revitalizing the her hometown, Beloit, Wis., and what that might mean for La Crosse. We also talk about the building being in a TIF district and how a sale like that goes through, after the city put money up front to help renovate the building. Other things we hit on included the La Crosse Queen getting a 20-year contract, the airport needing a new director and adding Allegiant Air and — again — needing to regionalize assets the city owns, like the airport and the La Crosse Center. The title of the sermon was “The Power of Agreement.” We are free to come into agreement with Christ Jesus everyday. We can say “Yes” to Jesus daily, and we are free to stand for Him in our words and actions; thus you are always on assignment for Jesus. The power of agreement with Jesus puts you in alignment with Him. Pastor Greg read from Mark about the paralyzed man whose four friends carried him to the Lord. These men evaluated the situation, decided the area was too crowded, so they climbed on the roof while carrying their friend. They opened the roof and “lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.'” Mark 2:4b-5 “Jesus saw their faith, and He was moved by it.Agreement turns weakness into witness and struggle into strength. The four men were in agreement that their friend needed healing, that Jesus could heal him, and that they could carry him. Pastor Greg posed two pertinent questions for us to ponder. The first one was “Who are you carrying towards Jesus right now?” The second was “When was the last time you let someone carry you?”Several verses discussed the power of two or more. “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV) In the New Testament it says “Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (NIV) Also Paul wrote, “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.” Romans 15:1 (NIV) We live in community, and when we do, we get to help each other. Agreement is the bridge between brokenness and breakthrough.
***WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTENT CONTAINS ELEMENTS THAT ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR SOME AUDIENCES. References to sexual assault, abuse, and potential trauma INCLUDING DISCUSSION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE.VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.The story starts with chaos—kids in the doorway, a violent assault, sirens in the street—and becomes a masterclass in survival, strategy, and justice. We sit with Lindsay Hendricks as she walks us through the realities most people never see: the cycle of abuse, the excuses that keep you trapped, the way gaslighting isolates you from family, and the hard choices you make when children are watching everything. We get candid about the legal fork in the road: take it to trial and risk retraumatizing testimony, or accept a plea that guarantees decades behind bars. The team chooses to protect the children—and two judges go further. Ada County hands down 65 years fixed. Canyon County follows with life without parole, after playing a recorded jail call where the abuser and his mother mock the victims' pain. It's the rare moment when the system does what it should. This conversation is raw and emotional. We outline red flags worth memorizing, how to build a quiet exit plan, why hidden savings matter, and how to document everything without jeopardizing an investigation. We talk therapy, survivor mindset, and the guilt that can swallow a parent whole—and how to keep it from consuming your life. We also push for change: clearer minimums for child sexual abuse, tech-savvy investigations, and judges who match sentences to the harm done.If you've ever wondered what it takes to get from sirens to sentencing—and how to support someone living in fear—this is your blueprint. Listen, share it with someone who might need it, and if this resonates, subscribe, leave a review, and tell us what chaos you want to hear next. Check out our Halloween Pop-up Channel here.Eight-year-old Emily Patterson, sole unchanged survivor of the Hendricks house incident, has been drawing the same prophetic scene for fifty-one years—thirty figures surrounding Millbrook on Halloween as the town drowns, with a faceless woman at the center who Emily says "hasn't decided which face to wear yet." Living frozen at age eight in a psychiatric facility since 1974, Emily reveals the shocking truth through her drawings: Margaret is Sarah Blackwood reincarnated, trying for the sixth time to solve her own murder from 1774, when Mayor Davidson—still alive and unchanged after 251 years—killed her to steal her pregnancy. The thirty founding families are actually IT's hybrid offspring born from Sarah's corpse, and Davidson has been feeding them back to their father every fifty years to maintain his immortality. Emily ages fifty-one years in seconds as Davidson arrives to silence her, the psychiatric facility sinking into the earth as Margaret flees with drawings showing she must give birth to thirty human babies on Halloween to break the cycle—but Davidson has already left her the same knife that's killed her five times before.Unlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! We may think of rock and roll or rhythm and blues, but one of the earliest and most popular musical exports is jazz and swing. Paul Hendricks is the Executive Director of the Conservation Alliance, a coalition of more than 270 businesses working together to protect wild places across North America. Founded nearly four decades ago by Patagonia, REI, The North Face, and Kelty, the Conservation Alliance has grown into one of the most important forces in conservation—pooling dollars, influence, and a collective business voice to support grassroots campaigns that keep public lands and waters healthy for generations to come. At a time when those places are under constant pressure, the Conservation Alliance is showing that businesses don't have to sit on the sidelines—they can be a powerful part of the solution. Paul's own path to this role winds through some of the most interesting corners of the conservation and environmental worlds. After earning a few advanced degrees, he started at Global Greengrants Fund, working with grassroots activists around the globe. He then joined Patagonia's legendary environmental team, where he learned firsthand how a company can weave values into every decision. From there he helped build sustainability programs at Rivian, tackling the climate footprint of a car company from the inside. And woven through all of that is a through-line of humility, service, and adventure. In this conversation, Paul and I talk about the roots of his love for the outdoors, the mentors and lessons that shaped his career, and what it's like to step into the hot seat as a first-time executive director. We dig into the Conservation Alliance's mission and why business advocacy matters, the current threats facing public lands, and how Paul stays grounded in turbulent times. We also talk about family, leadership, failure, and why hope is not just possible but necessary. It's a candid, thoughtful conversation with someone who's not only shaping the future of conservation, but doing it with humility, persistence, and just enough humor to keep it human. I've had the privilege of knowing Paul for almost 15 years–we met when he first moved to Colorado, became running and climbing partners, and have logged more hours together in the mountains and had more meaningful conversations than I can count. Watching him grow into this role has been inspiring, both for the positions he's held and for the way he's carried himself along the way. --- Paul Hendricks The Conservation Alliance Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/paul-hendricks/ --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 2:37 – Intro, Ed's one running partner 4:03 – How the outdoors has shaped Paul's career 6:48 – Plan post-college 12:41 – Sunk-cost fallacy 14:22 – Global Greengrants Fund 17:05 – Learning from Rick Ridgeway 20:23 – Lessons from Patagonia 24:25 – Ready for a new challenge 30:00 – Laid off at Rivian 36:02 – Being in charge 38:01 – The Conservation Alliance history 43:07 – TCA within public lands threats 48:58 – What's missing from the public lands story? 51:49 – Paul's role as a leader 56:14 – Role models 59:04 – Getting outdoors now 1:01:10 – Book recs 1:03:09 – 1% for the Planet collab 1:05:14 – Wrapping up --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill are the married couple behind architecture and design studio Hendricks Churchill. Churchill came from a family of builders, and was already running a successful firm—but it wasn't until Hendricks switched careers from art world PR to interior design that Hendricks Churchill truly came together. Since then, their ability to preserve architectural history while infusing it with a vibrant new life has won them a regular spot on Elle Decor's A-List and earned them recognition throughout the industry. On this episode of the podcast, the pair speak with host Dennis Scully about why mutual trust is more important than any contract, their new hospitality venture, and why too many firms get obsessed with revenue and forget all about a more important metric: profit. Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner talk MLB betting for Tuesday. Munaf Manji (0:09–0:58) opens with excitement, noting most teams are 124–126 games deep and division races heating up. He promises best bets and promotions before introducing Griffin Warner. Griffin (0:59–1:13) admits they went 0–2 last episode but were 6–2 in the last eight and ready to build a new streak. Munaf (1:14–2:30) previews Brewers at Cubs, a doubleheader shifted by rain: Boyd vs Patrick, Cubs –130, Brewers +118, total 7.5. Griffin (2:31–3:03) jokes about losing his internet before asking about standings. Munaf (3:04–3:12) says Brewers lead Cubs by eight. Griffin (3:12–5:13) calls Milwaukee's 31 wins in 38 “incredible” while Cubs are under .500 since midseason and mentally damaged. Munaf (5:14–6:52) adds Brewers are 23–5 since the break, Cubs 13–15, their bats flat with Crow-Armstrong and Tucker slumping. Boyd has pitched well but Cubs have lost four straight of his starts due to no run support. He sticks with Milwaukee. Munaf (7:13–7:56) shifts to Cardinals at Marlins, McGreevy vs Cabrera, Miami –132. Griffin (7:58–9:27) says St. Louis sold at the deadline, bullpen shaky, GM retiring, so it's Marlins or nothing. Munaf (9:28–11:13) praises Cabrera's 2.86 ERA at home across 63 innings and sides Miami. Astros at Tigers (11:14–15:33) brings Hunter Brown at +149 against Skubal –165. Griffin calls that price shocking, noting Skubal has allowed three runs in three straight. Munaf confirms it's the first time Brown has been above +140, citing his 3–0 record with 2.93 ERA vs Detroit. They agree Astros ML and under seven. Blue Jays at Pirates (15:46–19:45): Griffin says Keller is untrustworthy while Scherzer has adjusted. Munaf notes Keller's struggles but Scherzer's strong three-game run and backs Jays on the run line. Mets at Nationals (19:47–22:23): Griffin leans over nine, citing poor bullpens. Munaf recalls Peterson's complete game shutout vs Washington and his 2.43 ERA against them since 2023, while Irvin has allowed 14 runs in three August starts, backing Mets. Mariners at Phillies (22:24–25:34): Griffin doubts Miller's return, Munaf stresses Sanchez's 9–1 home record, both back Philadelphia. Orioles at Red Sox (25:35–28:53): Griffin finds Buehler unreliable, Munaf says he struggles to string good starts, both lean over 9.5. White Sox at Braves (28:54–32:06): little faith in either side, White Sox bullpen dismissed. Yankees at Rays (33:11–37:46): Griffin praises Boz but doubts Yankees' management; Munaf notes Rodon's 3.25 ERA, New York's seven wins in ten, and Rays' cooling bats, siding Yankees –140. Rangers at Royals (37:48–43:38): Lugo has allowed 13 runs in two starts, Griffin leans Rangers with Kelly, Munaf agrees. Athletics at Twins (43:39–47:04): Lopez hasn't allowed an earned run in 24 innings, Ryan is 12–5 with 2.72 ERA, both lean under but wary of regression. Brewers at Cubs Game 2 (47:06–51:15): Woodruff vs Taillon, Griffin surprised Brewers favored on road but won't fade them, Munaf notes they've won every Woodruff start. Dodgers at Rockies (51:17–53:15): Sheehan vs Gomber, both expect runs at Coors, backing the over. Reds at Angels (53:16–55:49): Griffin tired of Hendricks, Munaf impressed by Greene's six shutout innings vs Phillies, siding Reds. Giants at Padres (55:51–58:50): Tang gave up six runs in his last outing, Pavetta 12–4 with a 2.7 ERA, Munaf backs Padres team total. Guardians at Diamondbacks (58:58–1:03:18): Griffin distrusts Rodriguez but sees Arizona's bats dangerous; Munaf notes E-Rod's poor 5.73 ERA at home, both lean over. Best bets (1:03:44–1:07:35): Griffin locks Astros–Tigers under seven, saying two aces and shaky offenses make it valuable. Munaf selects Yankees ML with Rodon, trusting their form and urgency. They close (1:07:35–1:09:14) with promos and optimism, determined to keep putting money in listeners' pockets as the postseason nears. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
