Hailing from Madrid, Rafa Santos has been part of the music industry since 1997, spreading House and Electronic music in all forms. Influenced by Jazz, Soul and R&B sounds, vinyl lover and selector, his musical style is drawn with strokes from Chicago and Detroit, full of hypnotic chords and grooves. CEO and A&R of MATE, a vinyl House and Deep-house music label focused on classic and underground vibes. Currently the most active and vital national ambassador of house music outside our borders. It holds artists such as Byron The Aquarius Javonntte, Vick Lavender, Garrett David, Tilman, Reggie Dokes, Gari Romalis, Shaka, and Nico Lahs... "This set was recorded at home near a cold beer! 2 x Technics SL-1210 and a Tascam recorder were the culprits. I selected some new records and old gems for the occasion. Enjoy the lovely deep grooves and hot vibes."
Since its launch in 2016, FWR has been dealing records online and at record fairs around the country. It wasn't until 2018 that head honcho, Flat White Chris decided to start releasing records under the Flat White name, and launched as a label. Already with eight releases to its name, the label has showcased talents such as Jacques Renault, Last Nubian, Garrett David, Byron The Aquarius, Felipe Gordon, (to name a few) as well as Flat White Chris himself. The label prides itself on championing up and coming artists from around the globe, as well as those from the UK and specifically, Leicester City. So far, releases have been played by Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6Music, had features with the likes of Dj Mag and Mixmag, as well as being stocked by record stores all over the world. Back in October 2018, Chris launched his very own label night in Leicester, Flat White Fridays. This has been a resounding success with Chris's 6+hour vinyl sets establishing a real following in less than a year. Monthly bookings (past and future) include Felipe Gordon, Kassian, Cleanfield, City Fly Records, Danny Langan and of course, SlothBoogie. The mix includes a mix of new, old and forthcoming tracks, a couple of which will be out on FWR in the very near future. I like to think this is the sort of noise you can expect if you were to come to one of the Flat White label nights in Leicester.
This week my guests are Don Garrett, David Bakker, and Tlink. We discuss recent events and talk about how far this podcast has come.
Read it in French: https://electrocorp.fr/2019/09/25/argot-american-dance-music-2/ We've been following the Chicago-based label Argot @argotmusic for years now, when its founder Steve Mizek was putting out stellar EPs from the likes of The Black Madonna, Octo Octa, Amir Alexander and many more. Since the beginning, the label's mission has always been the same: successfully promoting America's contemporary electronic music landscapes. Back in 2017, Argot released the first volume of "American Dance Music", a series of compilation showcasing homegrown U.S. talents, on which Steve assembled familiar faces as well as new ones, spotlighting diverse talents who make up American dance music. Two years later, the second volume is now coming out, offering another slice of the American scene as witnessed by Argot's founder. While not comprehensive, the 12 track digital compilation showcases a breadth of compelling sounds bubbling up around the U.S., encompassing everything from azure deep house and Midwest electro to glitchy pop and experimental compositions. We are thrilled to share with you "Icy Traverse", the opening title of the compilation. On this track, Chicago artist and Smatbar resident Garrett David @garrettdavid is teaming up again with Colin Johnson @colinsprojects(from Chicago too) after their collaborative work on Lobster Theremin in 2017. Here they deliver a pure house cut with a deep atmosphere filled with a beautiful energy. If you are familiar with Garrett David's work, you'll know what to expect. If not, we highly recommend you his entire discography, as well as Argot's. The compilation also features many fresh faces and contains debut tracks by Peoria, Illinois producer Bodyman and the Madison, Wisconsin-based duo Mazumi. Argot also welcomes to the fold Huey Mnemonic from Grand Rapids; Nikki Nair of Knoxville, Tennessee; Naeem from Pittsburgh; Washington DC duo Scattergood (Mike Petillo of Protect-U and Sami Yenigun of D.C. label 1432 R); Jeremy Castillo out of San Francisco; and veteran Atlanta producer TWINS. The Chicago contingent is strong as well, with tracks by Ariel Zetina, James N. Murray, and Richard Holhburn.

"When DJ Sneak asks you to do a mix, you go 100% or don't go at all." That approach is exactly why there's a real treat in store from Chicago's Kid Enigma who has served up a mouth-watering taste of the jacking sound cultivated in the Windy City. The South Sider's journey with house music started at the age of 19: "I left 3 residencies to discover the deep and dirty. Top 40, reggae, dancehall, hip hop. That was cute. It made me a lot of money. It didn't satisfy my want for more. I didn't know what more was. I heard Shades of Dank at Zentra. I had to learn how to make new records that made me feel the way I felt when I heard that. It was a bootleg, but it was a great bootleg. I remember dancing to that and feeling like the track was 7 hours long because it was so amazing to me. Money Can't Buy That Feeling." Kid Enigma has gone on to release music for Blue Town Records, So Sound, Plant 74, 1200 Traxx and several more fine labels. On his Gangstercast, KE says: "I'm from Chicago, and I chose to sound as close to home as possible with each record. With records from up and coming artists from Chicago like Ed Nine and Garrett David, as well as other random artists that have sent me promos which I am ultimately grateful for, I have chosen to bang my favorite percussion, stabs and chants at the moment and put them together for this mix. I like to integrate live blending with the garnishment of delays, echoes and reverb effects to paint an audible dream of how I'm feeling at the moment, which is the most important part. The Moment." And he has a great viewpoint on the overall House Gangster sound which he describes: "The percussion behind the mix bangs the side of your head like a bat on a trash can, similar to the call out from one gang to another. The wave of sounds should take you up and down, like coastal winds and storms do to their boats and ships. Our chants are for the forward movement of creativity and individuality, dating back to the roots of tribal evocation."
