What if taking Mary seriously actually deepens, rather than distracts from, devotion to Jesus? Art historian and theologian Matthew Milliner joins Mark Labberton to explore that possibility through history, theology, and the Incarnation. In a searching conversation about Mary, the meaning of Marian devotion, and the mystery of the Incarnation, they draw from early Christianity, Protestant theology, and global Christianity, as Milliner reframes Mary as a figure who deepens devotion to Christ rather than distracting from it. "I don't see how anyone cannot understand this to be the revolution of revolutions in regards to the way that women are understood." In this episode, they reflect on Mary as presence, witness, and theological key to understanding God's entry into human life. They discuss Marian devotion before the Reformation, excess and restraint in Christian practice, the Incarnation's implications for embodiment and gender, Protestant fears and recoveries, global Marian traditions, grief and discipleship, and why Mary ultimately points beyond herself to Christ. Episode Highlights "I love Jesus so much that I love his mom too. Isn't she great too?" " What relationship do you have in your life where if you knew the parents of the person you're in relationship with, that would damage the relationship? … It's a sign of deep intimacy." "There is no Christianity without Mary. That's how God came into the world." "She is my tutorial in grief." "If it's the real Mary you're dealing with, she will point you to Jesus." "The answer to the abuse is to point to the best use." "She became a presence in the church for me." "I don't see how anyone cannot understand this to be the revolution of revolutions." About Matthew Milliner Matthew J. Milliner is Associate Professor of Art History at Wheaton College, where he specializes in early Christian, Byzantine, and global Christian art. His scholarship explores theology through visual culture, with particular attention to Mary, the Incarnation, and Christian devotion across traditions. Milliner is widely published in academic journals and popular outlets, including Comment Magazine, where he has written extensively on Marian theology and Christian art. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer on Christianity and aesthetics, and his work bridges evangelical theology, Anglican practice, and historic Christian tradition. Milliner is also known for his teaching on icons, pilgrimage, and the relationship between art, doctrine, and discipleship. The angel Gabriel's Annunciation and Mary's consent Annunciation framed as consent rather than coercion, with Luke emphasizing Mary's agency "Nothing happens to her until she consents." For part 7 of 12 on “What is the Nicene Creed?” we unpack these lines:For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buriedOn the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; One of the wild things about the Creed is we go right from Jesus' birth, via Mary, to his death, at the hands of Pontius Pilate. And yet, even wilder still, is that our God in Christ suffered death. The crucifixion – a death used by the Roman Empire to terrify and suppress enslaved people who rebelled – and the resurrection – are at the epicenter of Christian faith. What does it mean that Jesus died this way? What does it mean that on the third day, he rose? We are delighted and amazed to welcome to the podcast the inimitable Rev. Dr. Canon Kelly Brown Douglas, whose enormous work as priest, preacher, teacher, and writer, has long explored these questions.More about our guest: The Rev. For part 6 of 12 on “What is the Nicene Creed?” we unpack these lines:by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made manThe Virgin Mary is a powerful force in Christian imagination – meaning, whether you venerate her or are suspicious of folks “praying to” her, whether you grew up celebrating the many apparitions of Mary or vaguely only heard her referred to around Christmas, her role in Jesus' life and our lives communicates what we believe about motherhood, virginity, women, and Jesus' incarnation. So why is she included in the Creed? What about her presence, consent to bear the Christ child, and reproductive status made her significant enough to be the only human being referenced besides Pontius Pilate? Join Mary devotee (Rev. Lizzie), Mary skeptic (Rev. Laura), and our guest, Mariology expert (Rev. Dr. Amey Victoria Adkins-Jones) as we unpack these questions and more. More about our guest: Amey Victoria Adkins-Jones is Assistant Professor of Theology and Africana studies at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia. Adkins-Jones came to Candler from Boston College, where she served as Assistant Professor of Theology and African and African Diaspora Studies. A theologian and scholar of Black religion, she specializes in Mariology, Black feminist and womanist thought, and theological anthropology. A graduate of the University of Virginia and Duke Divinity School, she received her Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University in 2016 with a Certificate in Feminist Theory. She was the first Black woman to graduate from the doctoral program in Christian theology and ethics. Her first monograph, Immaculate Misconceptions: A Black Mariology (Oxford University Press, June 2025), argues that "Mary is Black," and is a Black feminist theological account of the icon of the Black Madonna and the rise of the global sex trade. She is at work on a second book project, See No Evil, which explores how visual technologies and artificial intelligence impact public perception of violence and Black death, developing a theological framework for Black protest.. Outside of academia, Rev. Dr. Adkins-Jones is an ordained Baptist minister who frequently preaches and teaches around the country, and brings pastoral sensibility to her work centering social justice. She is a practicing birth worker (doula), a trained iconographer, and has a career background in UX Copywriting and Design. Send us a textA scarred face, a steadfast gaze, and a nation that refused to bow—this is the living story of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa. We travel from the mist of legend to the grit of history, tracing how a single icon at Jasna Gora became a fortress of faith and a compass for Poland's identity. You'll hear how the 1655 siege transformed a monastery into a rallying cry, why a king vowed Mary as Queen of Poland, and how coronations, crowns, and countless pilgrim offerings turned devotion into a public vow that survived partitions, world wars, and communist pressure.Along the way, we unpack the icon's arresting symbolism: Mary's hand pointing to Christ, the Hodegetria pose that centers the way forward; the two slashes on her cheek that restorers could not erase; and the darkened hue that countless candles and centuries deepened into a sign of universal motherhood. We then step into the twentieth century, where clandestine prayers bloomed into the Solidarity movement, workers wore the Black Madonna close to their hearts, and a young Karol Wojtyla—later Saint John Paul II—returned again and again to entrust his homeland and papacy to her care. This is a pilgrimage of memory and meaning: footsteps on hot roads, whispered rosaries under watchful eyes, tears of gratitude before a mother who stands with her children. For this episode, once again we will be exploring a Black Madonna whose the restoration of the original image makes this Madonna lighter than she once was. I feel so blessed to do the work I do, and it lights me up even more when I meet women who are fully stepping into their passions. There's something truly magical about witnessing someone take the wisdom they've gathered from their life and transform it into a path that not only serves them, but lifts others too. Today, I get to share a conversation with one of those women, and I am beyond excited for you to meet her. My guest is Kathleen Joan, a priestess of Brigid, who lovingly guides women from Christian backgrounds to come home to themselves as sacred, through the Divine Feminine. Kathleen was a Catholic school religion teacher, and she's taken her deep knowledge and heart-centered experience from the classroom and woven it into a coaching practice that helps women reconnect to the wild, sacred Feminine within. She supports women in stepping fully into their authentic calling, as part of the Divine Mother's return—the tender, powerful energy that is healing our hearts, our communities, and our world. In our conversation, Kathleen Joan and I explore: - The urgent need for the resurgence of the divine feminine in today's world - A spiritual framework that lovingly honors both feminine and masculine energies - How embracing the divine feminine can coexist with Christian and traditional beliefs - The Black Madonna as a luminous symbol of the sacred Feminine - Why the return of the goddesses is so essential for collective healing - The divine mother energy, and how it fosters care, connection, and reverence for the Earth This episode is a warm invitation—to lean in, reconnect with your own sacredness, and be inspired by the ways the Divine Feminine can awaken and guide your life. Friends of the Rosary,We celebrate today the feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa, also known as the Black Madonna. The icon enshrined in Jasna Góra (Bright Hill) Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland, was painted by Luke the Evangelist on a cypress wood panel from a table used by the Holy Family in Nazareth. This Byzantine icon was discovered by St. Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine and enshrined in the imperial city of Constantinople, where it remained for the next 500 years. The image was then brought to Poland in the 14th century. The image of Our Lady of Częstochowa is associated with several miraculous events. After the liberation of Poland from Nazi occupation, 1.5 million people gathered at Jasna Góra in 1945 to rededicate the nation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our Lady's intercession is credited with the liberation of Poland from Communist rule.Pope John Paul II visited the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa four times during his pontificate. The holy painting enshrined at Częstochowa has been a lighthouse of hope during centuries of hardship and defeat. Today, the Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa attracts millions of people who love and honor Our Lady's intercession. It is known as the “Black Madonna” because of the soot residue that discolors the painting, a result of centuries of votive lights and candles burning in front of it.Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New York• August 26, 2025, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

Hear about travel to the tiny country of Andorra as the Amateur Traveler talks to musician Eli Lev about this small country in the Pyrenees Mountains, where he lived for three years. Why should you go to Andorra? Eli says, "I just fell in love with the country. First of all, it's in the middle of these magnificent mountains of the Pyrenees, so that means in winter you've got skiing, snowboarding, Aper ski, lots of festivities. Beautiful. In the summer, you've got these incredible hikes and a really special, like Neverland, nestled in the mountains with a lot of nature and really cool culture as well. So all year round." Day 1 – Barcelona → Montserrat → La Seu d'Urgell Pick up a rental car or budget bus in Barcelona, break the 3–4 hour mountain drive with a 3-hour stop at dramatic Montserrat Abbey for the cliff-side basilica, hiking paths, and Black Madonna shrine. Continue north to La Seu d'Urgell to wander its daily produce market and get a first taste of Catalan culture before the border. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-andorra/ Learn more about your ad choices. In this powerful conversation, I sit down with Alessandra Belloni, an internationally acclaimed singer, percussionist, teacher, and author, to explore her profound journey as both an artist and a medicine woman. With over 40 years of fieldwork studying Southern Italian folk music and the traditions of the Black Madonna, Alessandra shares how her creative expression is deeply connected to her healing work. We dive into the ancient trance dance of the Tarantella, a practice rooted in healing trauma, particularly in women, and in reconnecting to the body as a sacred vessel of ancestral wisdom. Alessandra speaks about the transformative power of dance and ritual as tools for integration, embodiment, and spiritual awakening. Together, we explore the mystical presence of the Black Madonna across different traditions and how she serves as a powerful archetype of spiritual guidance, resilience, and unconditional love. This conversation is filled with ancient wisdom, black void potency, and the deep holding of the great ancient mother. We also touch on the importance of surrender, the role of community in healing, and how ancient practices can offer insight and strength for the challenges we face today. Alessandra's work is a reminder that through rhythm, movement, and connection to the sacred, we can remember who we truly are and return home to our bodies, our ancestors, and each other. So settle in. This is a deep, beautiful, and potent episode. Discover Alessandra's work ❤️

It is May, the Month of Mary and also the anniversary month for The Black Madonna Speaks. We now have three years of programming completed, and in the process have become a trusted source of information and discovery on The Black Madonna. For this episode, a chapter of Byzantium and The Black Madonna will be read by author and host Stephanie Georgieff. The chapter is entitled "Ephesus, Artemis and The Dark Virgin" and explores the evolution of the mysteries of Ephesus from ancient times through the early centuries of the Christian Movement. This fascinating overview shows how The Black Madonna may have been influenced by such mysteries and what such an evolution has to offer us in our modern era.To receive weekly recorded chapters of Byzantium and The Black Madonna as well as upcoming books on Africa and The Black Madonna, and how The Black Madonna is a connector between Heaven and Earth, sign up for any level of support at Patreon to be the first to hear these as of yet unpublished books. https//www.patreon.com/TheBlackMadonnaSpeaksTo receive updates on The Transformative Darkness with the Black Madonna 2025 Tourhttps://forms.gle/DpmFsv28SxyraM7k7To make a one time donation of any amount to support the podcast, please donate tohttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BlackMadonnaHeartBecome a Patron for the channel at https//www.patreon.com/TheBlackMadonnaSpeaksTo purchase Black Madonna Speaks extra content, please visithttps://www.patreon.com/theblackmadonnaspeaks/shop#divinefeminine #sacredfeminine #virginmary #ourlady #blackmadonna #anthroposophy#spiritualjourney #camino #pilgrimage #mothermary #spirituality #ephesus #artemis #darkvirgin #goddess #mysteries
How do the disillusioned, the forgotten, and the persecuted not merely hold on to life but expand its possibilities and preserve its beauty? What, in other words, does utopia look like in black? These questions animate Aaron Robertson's exploration of Black Americans' efforts to remake the conditions of their lives. Writing in the tradition of Saidiya Hartman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robertson makes his way from his ancestral hometown of Promise Land, Tennessee, to Detroit—the city where he was born, and where one of the country's most remarkable Black utopian experiments got its start. Founded by the brilliant preacher Albert Cleage Jr., the Shrine of the Black Madonna combined Afrocentric Christian practice with radical social projects to transform the self-conception of its members. Central to this endeavor was the Shrine's chancel mural of a Black Virgin and child, the icon of a nationwide liberation movement that would come to be known as Black Christian Nationalism. The Shrine's members opened bookstores and co-ops, created a self-defense force, and raised their children communally, eventually working to establish the country's largest Black-owned farm, where attempts to create an earthly paradise for Black people continues today. Alongside the Shrine's story, Robertson reflects on a diverse array of Black utopian visions, from the Reconstruction era through the countercultural fervor of the 1960s and 1970s and into the present day. By doing so, Robertson showcases the enduring quest of collectives and individuals for a world beyond the constraints of systemic racism. The Black Utopians: Searching for Paradise and the Promised Land in America (FSG, 2024) offers a nuanced portrait of the struggle for spaces—both ideological and physical—where Black dignity, protection, and nourishment are paramount. This book is the story of a movement and of a world still in the making—one that points the way toward radical alternatives for the future. The Black Utopians is a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for History. Kishauna Soljour is an Assistant Professor of Public Humanities at San Diego State University. Host: Jason Rigby Guest: Ashley M. Ryan (Pythian Priestess) Guest Bio: Ashley M. Ryan, known as Pythian Priestess, is an initiated priestess in a Hermetic Order dedicated to the Goddess Auset (Isis). With over half her life dedicated to studying and practicing magick and witchcraft, she rose to TikTok fame in 2019 and founded the Pythian Mystery School in 2020. Ashley is a spiritual leader, educator, and advocate for reclaiming the sacred feminine in its wholeness—light and shadow alike. Episode Overview: In this powerful and thought-provoking episode, Jason Rigby welcomes back Ashley M. Ryan, the Pythian Priestess, to discuss her evolving journey as a spiritual leader and the fierce, unapologetic nature of the divine feminine. Ashley shares her insights on sacred rage, the commodification of spirituality, and the importance of integrating the shadow self. Drawing from ancient archetypes like Black Isis, Kali, and the Black Madonna, she offers practical rituals and wisdom for women seeking wholeness in a world that often dilutes the sacred. The conversation explores themes of truth, resilience, and the balance of light and shadow, challenging the "love and light" narrative with a call to embrace the wild and transformative aspects of spirituality. Key Themes: 1. Sacred Rage and the Warrior Archetype Ashley steps into the "warrior archetype" as a woman, not to destroy, but to defend truth, the sacred, and the mysteries (01:40). She connects this to her astrological birth chart (Saturn and Mars in the sixth house), emphasizing service and discipline (01:40). 2. The Dilution of Spirituality Ashley expresses grief over the commodification of spirituality, watching it become a "branded ATM" rather than a transformative tool (02:35). She critiques spiritual bypassing and the avoidance of pain, especially post-LA fires (03:32). 3. The Dark Goddess and Wholeness Referencing Dancing in the Flames by Woodman and Dickinson, Ashley explains the absence of the dark goddess in modern society and its damaging effects (04:41). Archetypes like Kali, Black Isis, and the Black Madonna embody resilience, fierce love, and the integration of suffering (16:06, 20:00). 4. Thumos: The Spirited Fire of the Soul Ashley introduces the ancient Greek concept of Thumos—righteous anger that defends truth and honor—contrasting it with the "love and light" narrative (10:39). She ties this to Plato's chariot allegory and the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot's Chariot card, symbolizing balance between the soul's appetites and higher aspirations (14:05). 5. Embracing the Shadow Ashley emphasizes that the shadow is not an enemy but a part of wholeness, urging listeners to alchemize pain into wisdom (33:50, 35:15). If you have been wanting to know more about the mysterious Black Madonna, this episode is for you! Last week I shared the amazing book, The Black Madonna, Mysterious Soul Companion by Stephanie Georgieff. This week we dive deeper as I share this special interview with the author herself and hear about her own miraculous journey with the Black Madonna! Let me tell you a bit about her: Stephanie Georgieff is a podcaster, author and speaker whose works surround the Divine Feminine through an Anthroposophical lens. She has led workshops and participated in Anthroposophical and Christian Community Conferences in North America, Europe, the United Kingdom and Southern Africa. Author of several books on The Black Madonna and The Virgin of Guadalupe, Georgieff now resides in Southwestern Bulgaria where she is serving with The International Fellowship of Saint John. She works with Roma in the region and manages the foundation guest house which hosts visiting mission teams from North America, the United Kingdom and Europe. Georgieff can be heard through her weekly podcast The Black Madonna Speaks available wherever one accesses their programs. In this episode, she shares her own journey of discovering the Black Madonna and the miraculous things she has learned and witnessed over the years. We also discuss the connection with Mary Magdalene, especially all through the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I hope this interview inspires you as much as it inspired me! Ps- if you want the link to her book, click here for the show notes And to listen to it in her own voice, click here for a FREE 30 Day Trial to Audible.com! Key Learnings: The Black Madonnas pre-date Christianity. They are based on the original mother image from Africa, the Great Cosmic Mother, the darkness from which all life emerges. The two patron saints of the Camino de Santiago in Spain are St. James the greater and St. Mary Magdalene. James represents the inner path, Mary Magdalene represents the outer path, the sensual path, the path of nature. The Black Madonnas want to be seen. Go on pilgrimage to visit them, and see them with your own eyes. This is the path of the Black Madonna. “The path of the Black Madonna is a never-ending journey!” Stephanie Georgieff To purchase the book The Black Madonna – Mysterious Soul Companion, click here Click here to find out more the Black Madonna Speaks podcast and her books I recommend listening to her book! Who is the Black Madonna? Or more appropriately… WHAT is the Black Madonna? Throughout Europe there are several Black Madonnas, images and icons of a Divine Mother with Dark Skin. These images have mysterious origins and even more mysterious stories associated with them, such as healings, miracles and other inexplicable events. In this episode, I share a special book about the Black Madonna by author Stephanie Georgieff, which beautifully combines historical research, mysticism and her own personal journey with the Black Madonna. In my own experience, the Black Madonna makes Herself known when you need Her most, especially during times of great change. I am so excited to share that next week my special guest will be the author, Stephanie Georgieff! Ps- if you want the link to the book, click here for the show notes. And click here for a FREE 30 Day Trial to Audible.com! Key Learnings: The Black Madonnas are statues and icons that are believed to originate in Africa and have traveled north to areas of Europe. It is believed that St. Luke is the creator of many of these madonnas, though none of them have any markings to indicate who created them. Stephanie Georgieff takes us through her own journey of discovering the Black Madonna, and combines her story with historical research and a profound understanding of mysticism. When the Black Madonna makes Her presence known to you, expect great change and transformation. “The Black Madonna often emerges in times of great change, to remind us we are not alone.” I recommend listening to this book! Author and broadcaster Chine McDonald has never seen a black representation of the Virgin Mary. Black Madonnas are statues or paintings of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus, where both figures are depicted with dark skin. They can be found both in Catholic and Orthodox countries. There are thought to be at least 450 of them in the world and there are more Vierges Noires documented in France than any other country in the world. Chine visits the Queen of Peace in the convent church of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Paris, accompanied by expert guide Dr Christena Cleveland. She travels to Orleans to see the Black Madonna statue: Our Lady of Miracles in the Chapel Notre Dame des Miracles. And cultural historian and University of Oxford based author Prof Janina Ramirez explains current thinking about the origins and cultural significance of the Black Madonna.
