One more gem of a discovery while formulating my Black Madonna Mysterious Soul Companion course on Teachable, was finding a unique modern image of The Black Madonna of Chartres. I was so taken by it, I decided to follow up with the artist, who is a delightful person based in Gloucester, Massachusetts. She has an entire repertoire of Divine Feminine and Goddess images in addition to The Black Madonna, Isis and Makeda - The Queen of Sheba. The interview explores the inspiration and process that Ms Berger goes through where she allows the artistic expression to come forth.Baraka Robin Berger's work can be found through Etsy at Baraka Berger Art www.etsy.com/shop/ArtoftheGoddessShe also has a Facebook page at Baraka Robin Berger Fine Artshttps://www.facebook.com/p/Baraka-Robin-Berger-Fine-Arts-100031786642313/And Instragram at Barakanrobinhttps://www.instagram.com/barakanrobin/To order The Black Madonna Mysterious Soul Companion course on Teachablelivingpharmacy.teachable.com/l/pdp/the-black-madonna-mysterious-soul-companionTo order The Virgin of Guadalupe, Mysterious Messenger of Destiny on Teachablelivingpharmacy.teachable.com/l/pdp/the-virgin-of-guadalupe-mysterious-messenger-of-destiny#Blackmadonna #DivineFeminine #Art #SacredImage #Chartres #Labyrinth
For many of us, school is out and the Summer holidays have begun. If you are like me, I enjoy light reading during this time and love to delve into a good fiction novel or two during the longer days and less scheduled weekends. As I was researching for the Black Madonna course on Teachable, the algorithm gnomes recommended The Black Madonna and The Young Sculptor since I was searching titles of other books featuring the subject. I had never read a fictional account of anything to do with The Black Madonna and was thoroughly intrigued by the entire title, which included the phrase " Mythic Dimension of Chartres Cathedral." I followed up with the author Eric G. Müller after finishing the book, and found that he had actually contacted me several years before regarding my book! So the arc has been completed, and the interview I hope will inspire you to purchase and enjoy this book as part of your supper reading selections. Eric is an author, publisher and instructor at the Waldorf Teaching Training Program through The Alkion Center. The Center also has a publishing house called Alkion Press. The Black Madonna and the Young Sculptor can be ordered through Alkion Presshttps://www.alkion-press.com/shop/the-black-madonna-and-the-young-sculptorYou can follow Eric through his Website https://www.ericgmuller.comas well as his social media platforms https://www.facebook.com/ericgmullerhttps://www.instagram.com/ericgmuller/Enjoy!To order The Black Madonna Mysterious Soul Companion on Teachable, please visitlivingpharmacy.teachable.com/l/pdp/the-black-madonna-mysterious-soul-companionTo order The Virgin of Guadalupe Mysterious Messenger of Destiny on Teachable , please visitlivingpharmacy.teachable.com/l/pdp/the-virgin-of-guadalupe-mysterious-messenger-of-destiny#blackmadonna #ChartresCathedral #Druids #Anthroposophy #DivineFeminine #France #MontSaintMichel

In this first episode of The Divine Mother Series, I explore the archetype of the Divine Mother through the power of Earth, place, and sacred sites. I weave in reflections from my recent travels to Italy, encounters with sacred images of the Goddess, and contemplations on hunger, craving, and earth grief in a rapidly changing world. I weave together the symbolism of Mary Magdalene, the Black Madonna, pilgrimage traditions, and personal spiritual practices that help me reconnect with the sacred feminine and remember what has been lost and what still lives within us.
What happened after the crucifixion of Yeshua?Where did Mary Magdalene, Mother Mary, Lazarus, and all the Holy Women go — and why did France become one of the most powerful landscapes encoded with feminine mystery traditions in the world? In this episode, Julia explores the sacred geography, pilgrimage routes, Black Madonna traditions, and initiatory sites connected to the Magdalene stream after leaving the Holy Land.
Yes, it's late, but the looks that actually stay with you deserve more than a hot take. Nicole breaks down the 2026 Met Gala's "Fashion Is Art" theme with her signature unhurried eye: from Lauren Wasser's gold prosthetics to Anok Yai's Black Madonna moment, the sea of belly buttons, Paloma Elsesser's 100-vintage-dress patchwork gown, and Hailey Bieber's long-overdue redemption arc. Plus, Beyoncé channeling a Creole memento mori, Rihanna arriving as a medieval Belgian cathedral, and why the real conversation isn't about who sponsored the Gala, but what we've lost in our relationship with clothes.
In this episode, I explore what it means to see clearly in a world that often does not want to see.I weave together personal stories of rage and anger and share the story of Cassandra, the woman who was never wrong yet never believed. I will talk about what that pattern feels like in the body and in everyday life. Living in the suburbs, raising children, and moving through a culture that feels disconnected from the earth, I speak honestly about the tension of holding truths that are not always welcomed.
After first spending a magical week in community together in Mexico nearly a decade ago, sister/co-host Kerry has taken multiple classes and workshops from writer and filmmaker/producer Kerra Bolton such as - Writing with Your Ancestors: Infusing Memoir with Family History and Say It Plain. “It's very hard in writing and what I've noticed among writing students is that a lot of times when they are afraid to be vulnerable, they will write about something instead of writing through it...I get it, when I was writing about learning how to swim in my forties, which ended up becoming my first film: “Return of the Black Madonna,” it was hard to be vulnerable. And so, I had to really write through it and not just write about a subject,: says the adventurous Kerra about an experience like going from first putting your face into a pot of water to eventually finding buoyancy in the ocean. Kerry first met Kerra at a writing workshop in San Miguel de Allende, far from any body of water, back in 2017 and they have stayed in touch ever since, following each other's life stories as time has gone on. This week on Outlook, for Kerry's now annual International Women's Day episode, she speaks with her friend and kindred spirit about their time together in San Miguel as Kerry shares an unforgettable offer Kerra made near the end of that week; one female supporting the other in the midst of some first time independent world travel jitters. Concerning themes of race, trauma, and legacy, Bolton has been published in places ranging from online community Sweatpants & Coffee to CNn. She has worked on projects such as the documentary Detroit Rising which explores restorative justice in Detroit schools, communities, and nonprofit settings. These two friends discuss finding joy, metaphors around black and white and night and day along with white fragility and the running from the feeling of any discomfort in standing up for a better, more equitable world. They talk through when to speak (up and/or out) in social media spaces or on their own platforms, for example, and when to sit in silence with ourselves as women. focusing on personal growth or embodiment practices. Also, they could and do spend a bunch of time around cultural critique of the treatment of women such as Beyonce and Taylor Swift in the country music genre, the differences in how some female artists are given breaks and chances in belonging in certain creative spaces more than others. During March's Women's History Month, these two cover women in pop culture, bond over having similar spelled/sounding names, and they also share their literary love of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery who once said: "When I lose anything in this life I like to think I may find it in the next. After all, everything in the universe goes in circles - day and night, the seasons, the roll of the planets around the sun. Everything comes back to its starting point and begins again." Both Kerra and Kerry, like Anne of Green Gables pals," remain kindred spirits with their shared love of this iconic literary character, like Anne Shirley, one fictional and two real life writers utilising writing for self expression, and through work as advocates in the differing work they do from their little corners of the world, until they can one day meet IRL once more. Hidden deep within the Ardennes forest of Belgium sits one of the most mysterious and heavily guarded locations in the world—the Château des Amerois. In this episode, Joel Thomas examines the history, the claims, and the spiritual implications surrounding this infamous location—often referred to as the “Mothers of Darkness” castle. The Ardennes itself has long been considered a liminal region, marked by ancient pagan worship, Gnostic Christian mysticism, and some of the most intense occult history in Europe. Originally built as a Catholic estate, the château's beginnings stand in stark contrast to the theories that surround it today—claims of elite gatherings, occult rituals, and hidden networks operating behind the scenes. From connections to powerful families… to the shadows of the Marc Dutroux case… to the alleged presence of a Black Madonna tied to deeper symbolic interpretations—this story exists in the tension between documented history and testimony. So the question remains, Is Château des Amerois simply a historic estate surrounded by rumor… or something far more significant?Ronald Bernard Full Interview: Watch HereRonald Bernard YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RonaldBernard Merchandise: https://freetherabbits.myshopify.comBuy Me A Coffee: DonateFollow: Website | Instagram | X | FacebookWatch: YouTube | RumbleMusic: YouTube | Spotify | Apple Music Films: https://merkelfilms.com Email: freetherabbitspodcast@gmail.comDistributed by: merkel.mediaIntro Music:Joel Thomas – Free The RabbitsYouTube | Spotify | Apple MusicOutro Music:Joel Thomas – Jekyll Island feat. There are lands that don't just call you — they remember you.In this episode of The Sacred Travel Podcast, I'm joined by Ariana Brackenbury to explore the Dragon and Rose Lines of France and Scotland as a living continuum of feminine frequency — and the soul remembrance that opens when you follow that call.At the same time, this conversation opens something deeply human:What happens when life falls apart…and the soul begins to call you somewhere you cannot explain?Through a powerful story of grief, loss, reinvention, and radical trust, we explore how sacred travel becomes more than a journey — it becomes a threshold into remembrance.France and Scotland hold distinct frequencies. One refines. One ignites. And together, they mirror the inner path we walk when we begin to return to ourselves. What You'll Walk Away With:⚜️
At the time of the posting of this episode , i Western Christendom is in the Middle of Holy Week. During "normal times" Pilgrims tend to flock to various Holy Sites throughout Jerusalem and the surrounding areas. Each one of these sites, shrines and churches marking the places of Christ's Passion were discovered and developed by Saint Helen. She is also responsible for bringing numerous Black Madonnas to the European Continent in the 4th century. This episode explores those connections. Many Blessings on your Holy Week Journey! To make a one time donation of any amount to support the podcast, please donate tohttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BlackMadonnaHeartBecome a Patron for the channel at https://www.patreon.com/TheBlackMadonnaSpeakshttps://www.patreon.com/theblackmadonnaspeaks/shop#divinefeminine #sacredfeminine #virginmary #ourlady #blackmadonna #anthroposophy#spiritualjourney #camino #pilgrimage #mothermary #spirituality #STHelen

For part 8 of 12 on “What is the Nicene Creed?” we unpack these lines:he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.Ok so Jesus was born (Christmas), lived and did ministry and healed and taught and stuff, then was killed (Good Friday), and rose again (Easter) before he ... ascended into heaven. It's a big deal, but probably the most confusing part of his story on earth? So we called our most-listened to guest, our brilliant friend, the Rev. (future-Dr.!) Kelli Joyce, to unpack this for us. What if taking Mary seriously actually deepens, rather than distracts from, devotion to Jesus? Art historian and theologian Matthew Milliner joins Mark Labberton to explore that possibility through history, theology, and the Incarnation. In a searching conversation about Mary, the meaning of Marian devotion, and the mystery of the Incarnation, they draw from early Christianity, Protestant theology, and global Christianity, as Milliner reframes Mary as a figure who deepens devotion to Christ rather than distracting from it. "I don't see how anyone cannot understand this to be the revolution of revolutions in regards to the way that women are understood." In this episode, they reflect on Mary as presence, witness, and theological key to understanding God's entry into human life. They discuss Marian devotion before the Reformation, excess and restraint in Christian practice, the Incarnation's implications for embodiment and gender, Protestant fears and recoveries, global Marian traditions, grief and discipleship, and why Mary ultimately points beyond herself to Christ. Episode Highlights "I love Jesus so much that I love his mom too. Isn't she great too?" " What relationship do you have in your life where if you knew the parents of the person you're in relationship with, that would damage the relationship? … It's a sign of deep intimacy." "There is no Christianity without Mary. That's how God came into the world." "She is my tutorial in grief." "If it's the real Mary you're dealing with, she will point you to Jesus." "The answer to the abuse is to point to the best use." "She became a presence in the church for me." "I don't see how anyone cannot understand this to be the revolution of revolutions." About Matthew Milliner Matthew J. Milliner is Associate Professor of Art History at Wheaton College, where he specializes in early Christian, Byzantine, and global Christian art. His scholarship explores theology through visual culture, with particular attention to Mary, the Incarnation, and Christian devotion across traditions. Milliner is widely published in academic journals and popular outlets, including Comment Magazine, where he has written extensively on Marian theology and Christian art. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer on Christianity and aesthetics, and his work bridges evangelical theology, Anglican practice, and historic Christian tradition. Milliner is also known for his teaching on icons, pilgrimage, and the relationship between art, doctrine, and discipleship. Isn't she great too?" Honoring Mary without worship, framed through Revelation imagery of the bride and the people of God Archaeological and manuscript discoveries reshaping assumptions about early Christian practice Marian devotion expanding intimacy rather than competing with Christological focus Newman on devotion requiring excess, extravagance, and emotional overflow to be genuinely human "Let the Christian Church let it boil over every once in a while." Reformation dynamics producing extremes: feverish excess on one side and stone-cold rejection on the other Rosemary Radford Ruether, Goddesses and the Divine Feminine Pagan goddess traditions contrasted with Marian imagery and their treatment of women's bodies Aphrodite imagery as endorsement of male desire versus Marian imagery as reverence for God's entry into flesh "Find me an image of Mary that does anything close to that." Incarnation reshaping how Christians see the female body, sexuality, and dignity "This is the body God entered the world through." The angel Gabriel's Annunciation and Mary's consent Annunciation framed as consent rather than coercion, with Luke emphasizing Mary's agency "Nothing happens to her until she consents." Mary as theological answer to pornographic and exploitative religious imaginations "I don't see how anyone cannot understand this to be the revolution of revolutions." Guadalupe as evangelistic bridge for indigenous peoples pointing toward Christ without blood sacrifice Mary's global accessibility across Muslim, Hindu, and non-Christian contexts "She is a real evangelist, Mary." Walsingham pilgrimage as Anglican recovery of Marian devotion Marian attraction functioning as penumbra drawing outsiders toward Christianity "If it's the real Mary you're dealing with, she will point you to Jesus." Abuse of Marian devotion acknowledged alongside historical self-correction within Catholicism "The answer to the abuse is to point to the best use." Matthew Milliner's personal spiritual journey from childhood Catholicism through evangelical conversion Anti-Mary phase followed by rediscovery through art history and theology "She became a presence in the church for me." Mary understood as presence rather than abstract idea, without becoming divine William Johnson's, The Wounded Stag: God is beyond gender Devotional practice as tributary flowing into Trinitarian worship rather than replacing it "There is no Christianity without Mary. That's how God came into the world." Angelus prayer as scriptural meditation culminating in Trinitarian praise "Pour your grace into our hearts, O Lord." Psychological and spiritual healing through Marian presence without theological confusion Mary as guide for grief through images of sorrow and seven swords "She is my tutorial in grief." For part 7 of 12 on “What is the Nicene Creed?” we unpack these lines:For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buriedOn the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; One of the wild things about the Creed is we go right from Jesus' birth, via Mary, to his death, at the hands of Pontius Pilate. And yet, even wilder still, is that our God in Christ suffered death. The crucifixion – a death used by the Roman Empire to terrify and suppress enslaved people who rebelled – and the resurrection – are at the epicenter of Christian faith. What does it mean that Jesus died this way? What does it mean that on the third day, he rose? We are delighted and amazed to welcome to the podcast the inimitable Rev. Dr. Canon Kelly Brown Douglas, whose enormous work as priest, preacher, teacher, and writer, has long explored these questions.More about our guest: The Rev. For part 6 of 12 on “What is the Nicene Creed?” we unpack these lines:by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made manThe Virgin Mary is a powerful force in Christian imagination – meaning, whether you venerate her or are suspicious of folks “praying to” her, whether you grew up celebrating the many apparitions of Mary or vaguely only heard her referred to around Christmas, her role in Jesus' life and our lives communicates what we believe about motherhood, virginity, women, and Jesus' incarnation. So why is she included in the Creed? What about her presence, consent to bear the Christ child, and reproductive status made her significant enough to be the only human being referenced besides Pontius Pilate? Join Mary devotee (Rev. Lizzie), Mary skeptic (Rev. Laura), and our guest, Mariology expert (Rev. Dr. Amey Victoria Adkins-Jones) as we unpack these questions and more. More about our guest: Amey Victoria Adkins-Jones is Assistant Professor of Theology and Africana studies at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia. Adkins-Jones came to Candler from Boston College, where she served as Assistant Professor of Theology and African and African Diaspora Studies. A theologian and scholar of Black religion, she specializes in Mariology, Black feminist and womanist thought, and theological anthropology. A graduate of the University of Virginia and Duke Divinity School, she received her Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University in 2016 with a Certificate in Feminist Theory. She was the first Black woman to graduate from the doctoral program in Christian theology and ethics. Her first monograph, Immaculate Misconceptions: A Black Mariology (Oxford University Press, June 2025), argues that "Mary is Black," and is a Black feminist theological account of the icon of the Black Madonna and the rise of the global sex trade. She is at work on a second book project, See No Evil, which explores how visual technologies and artificial intelligence impact public perception of violence and Black death, developing a theological framework for Black protest.. Outside of academia, Rev. Dr. Adkins-Jones is an ordained Baptist minister who frequently preaches and teaches around the country, and brings pastoral sensibility to her work centering social justice. She is a practicing birth worker (doula), a trained iconographer, and has a career background in UX Copywriting and Design. She joyfully shares life and builds community with her beloved spouse and four children in Atlanta, Georgia.Instagram: @tomuchavail, @blackfuturesarchiveWeb: adkinsjones.com+++Like what you hear? Send us a textA scarred face, a steadfast gaze, and a nation that refused to bow—this is the living story of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa. We travel from the mist of legend to the grit of history, tracing how a single icon at Jasna Gora became a fortress of faith and a compass for Poland's identity. You'll hear how the 1655 siege transformed a monastery into a rallying cry, why a king vowed Mary as Queen of Poland, and how coronations, crowns, and countless pilgrim offerings turned devotion into a public vow that survived partitions, world wars, and communist pressure.Along the way, we unpack the icon's arresting symbolism: Mary's hand pointing to Christ, the Hodegetria pose that centers the way forward; the two slashes on her cheek that restorers could not erase; and the darkened hue that countless candles and centuries deepened into a sign of universal motherhood. We then step into the twentieth century, where clandestine prayers bloomed into the Solidarity movement, workers wore the Black Madonna close to their hearts, and a young Karol Wojtyla—later Saint John Paul II—returned again and again to entrust his homeland and papacy to her care. This is a pilgrimage of memory and meaning: footsteps on hot roads, whispered rosaries under watchful eyes, tears of gratitude before a mother who stands with her children. If stories of faith, courage, and national renewal speak to you, press play and walk with us to Bright Mountain. For this episode, once again we will be exploring a Black Madonna whose the restoration of the original image makes this Madonna lighter than she once was. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aránzazu (Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu) is one of the most significant and celebrated religious and cultural sites in the Basque Country. I feel so blessed to do the work I do, and it lights me up even more when I meet women who are fully stepping into their passions. There's something truly magical about witnessing someone take the wisdom they've gathered from their life and transform it into a path that not only serves them, but lifts others too. Today, I get to share a conversation with one of those women, and I am beyond excited for you to meet her. My guest is Kathleen Joan, a priestess of Brigid, who lovingly guides women from Christian backgrounds to come home to themselves as sacred, through the Divine Feminine. Kathleen was a Catholic school religion teacher, and she's taken her deep knowledge and heart-centered experience from the classroom and woven it into a coaching practice that helps women reconnect to the wild, sacred Feminine within. She supports women in stepping fully into their authentic calling, as part of the Divine Mother's return—the tender, powerful energy that is healing our hearts, our communities, and our world. In our conversation, Kathleen Joan and I explore: - The urgent need for the resurgence of the divine feminine in today's world - A spiritual framework that lovingly honors both feminine and masculine energies - How embracing the divine feminine can coexist with Christian and traditional beliefs - The Black Madonna as a luminous symbol of the sacred Feminine - Why the return of the goddesses is so essential for collective healing - The divine mother energy, and how it fosters care, connection, and reverence for the Earth This episode is a warm invitation—to lean in, reconnect with your own sacredness, and be inspired by the ways the Divine Feminine can awaken and guide your life. Friends of the Rosary,We celebrate today the feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa, also known as the Black Madonna. The icon enshrined in Jasna Góra (Bright Hill) Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland, was painted by Luke the Evangelist on a cypress wood panel from a table used by the Holy Family in Nazareth. This Byzantine icon was discovered by St. Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine and enshrined in the imperial city of Constantinople, where it remained for the next 500 years. The image was then brought to Poland in the 14th century. The image of Our Lady of Częstochowa is associated with several miraculous events. After the liberation of Poland from Nazi occupation, 1.5 million people gathered at Jasna Góra in 1945 to rededicate the nation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our Lady's intercession is credited with the liberation of Poland from Communist rule.Pope John Paul II visited the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa four times during his pontificate. The holy painting enshrined at Częstochowa has been a lighthouse of hope during centuries of hardship and defeat. Today, the Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa attracts millions of people who love and honor Our Lady's intercession. It is known as the “Black Madonna” because of the soot residue that discolors the painting, a result of centuries of votive lights and candles burning in front of it.Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New York• August 26, 2025, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

Hear about travel to the tiny country of Andorra as the Amateur Traveler talks to musician Eli Lev about this small country in the Pyrenees Mountains, where he lived for three years. Why should you go to Andorra? Eli says, "I just fell in love with the country. First of all, it's in the middle of these magnificent mountains of the Pyrenees, so that means in winter you've got skiing, snowboarding, Aper ski, lots of festivities. Beautiful. In the summer, you've got these incredible hikes and a really special, like Neverland, nestled in the mountains with a lot of nature and really cool culture as well. So all year round." Day 1 – Barcelona → Montserrat → La Seu d'Urgell Pick up a rental car or budget bus in Barcelona, break the 3–4 hour mountain drive with a 3-hour stop at dramatic Montserrat Abbey for the cliff-side basilica, hiking paths, and Black Madonna shrine. In this powerful conversation, I sit down with Alessandra Belloni, an internationally acclaimed singer, percussionist, teacher, and author, to explore her profound journey as both an artist and a medicine woman. With over 40 years of fieldwork studying Southern Italian folk music and the traditions of the Black Madonna, Alessandra shares how her creative expression is deeply connected to her healing work. We dive into the ancient trance dance of the Tarantella, a practice rooted in healing trauma, particularly in women, and in reconnecting to the body as a sacred vessel of ancestral wisdom. Alessandra speaks about the transformative power of dance and ritual as tools for integration, embodiment, and spiritual awakening. Together, we explore the mystical presence of the Black Madonna across different traditions and how she serves as a powerful archetype of spiritual guidance, resilience, and unconditional love. This conversation is filled with ancient wisdom, black void potency, and the deep holding of the great ancient mother. We also touch on the importance of surrender, the role of community in healing, and how ancient practices can offer insight and strength for the challenges we face today. Alessandra's work is a reminder that through rhythm, movement, and connection to the sacred, we can remember who we truly are and return home to our bodies, our ancestors, and each other. So settle in. This is a deep, beautiful, and potent episode. Discover Alessandra's work ❤️
How do the disillusioned, the forgotten, and the persecuted not merely hold on to life but expand its possibilities and preserve its beauty? What, in other words, does utopia look like in black? These questions animate Aaron Robertson's exploration of Black Americans' efforts to remake the conditions of their lives. Writing in the tradition of Saidiya Hartman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robertson makes his way from his ancestral hometown of Promise Land, Tennessee, to Detroit—the city where he was born, and where one of the country's most remarkable Black utopian experiments got its start. Founded by the brilliant preacher Albert Cleage Jr., the Shrine of the Black Madonna combined Afrocentric Christian practice with radical social projects to transform the self-conception of its members. Central to this endeavor was the Shrine's chancel mural of a Black Virgin and child, the icon of a nationwide liberation movement that would come to be known as Black Christian Nationalism. The Shrine's members opened bookstores and co-ops, created a self-defense force, and raised their children communally, eventually working to establish the country's largest Black-owned farm, where attempts to create an earthly paradise for Black people continues today. Alongside the Shrine's story, Robertson reflects on a diverse array of Black utopian visions, from the Reconstruction era through the countercultural fervor of the 1960s and 1970s and into the present day. By doing so, Robertson showcases the enduring quest of collectives and individuals for a world beyond the constraints of systemic racism. The Black Utopians: Searching for Paradise and the Promised Land in America (FSG, 2024) offers a nuanced portrait of the struggle for spaces—both ideological and physical—where Black dignity, protection, and nourishment are paramount. This book is the story of a movement and of a world still in the making—one that points the way toward radical alternatives for the future. The Black Utopians is a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for History. Kishauna Soljour is an Assistant Professor of Public Humanities at San Diego State University. Her most recent writing appears in the edited collection: From Rights to Lives: The Evolution of the Black Freedom Struggle. Learn more about your ad choices.
