Nashville, TN Mayor Freddie O'Connell was compelled to run for office on a simple principle. For too long, transit and infrastructure had been neglected by city officials. Upon winning his race in 2023, O'Connell's north star has been making it easier for Nashvillians to get around their city. "I don't know of a greater transit evangelist among the mayor fraternity than Mayor O'Connell," said Citizen Co-Founder Larry Platt on this week's episode. "My mom remembers a Nashville that still had streetcar lines," O'Connell told our podcast hosts, former Mayors Kasim Reed of Atlanta and Michael Nutter of Philly. "And then we ripped that all out. If you look at our old streetcar maps, we had a good transit system. I ran [for mayor] because I felt like we had priorities as a city that simply were not going to get addressed unless I forced the issue." Join us for a discussion during this year's Infrastructure Week centered on a blue city in a red state pulling every lever to reestablish customer-focused government and "trying every day to showcase that we've made the right choices" in infrastructure investment. But Mayor O'Connell isn't all work and no play down there in Nashville. He also moonlights as DJ Stay (he chose this nom de vinyl because "I want you to stay" in Nashville). "Our man says he's on the ones and twos," laughed Nutter, who knows a few things himself about spinning records. "I didn't have this on the bingo card for today," Reed said with a grin.  Remember to subscribe to the podcast to keep up on all the latest episodes. When Republican Stephen Goldsmith was Mayor of Indianapolis, IN, he ran his city by "devolving" decisions down to the grassroots level. He created partnerships with the movers and shakers of local areas – community-based organizations, small businesses, faith leaders — to decide together how best to spend money in their neighborhoods. "Government had neglected those neighborhoods," he told our podcast hosts, former Mayors Kasim Reed of Atlanta and Michael Nutter of Philly. "And no amount of expenditures would have been sufficient if we couldn't lift up the civic infrastructure of the neighborhoods themselves." This, said Goldsmith, who was a deputy mayor under Mike Bloomberg in New York and is now a professor of urban policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School, is the true power of mayors: the ability to convene and inspire a city to greatness. Despite the circus coming from Washington, D.C., Goldsmith told our hosts that he has great hope for cities. "This is the time to be mayor, because if you want to lead, you can really make a difference." Goldsmith also garnered some unexpected praise from our hosts. "I was struck by your book, Putting Faith in Neighborhoods: Making Cities Work through Grassroots Citizenship," Citizen Co-Founder Larry Platt told him. "I remember thinking it was a model for cities to follow." "This is exciting," Goldsmith replied, "You're one of five people who read that book. What sort of life do you live?" "We're working on it, Mayor Goldsmith," laughed Nutter and Reed. "We're trying to help him!" Remember to subscribe to the podcast to keep up on all the latest episodes. Lauren Nutter's story has so many interesting threads and I'm excited for you to hear about all of it. First up, Lauren will be running Boston for the very first time, and that has been a goal that she has had in earnest since 2019. Between then and now, Lauren discovered the majors. At the time there were six major marathons, and Lauren decided she was going to run them all and earn her six stars, as it's called. In addition to Boston, those marathons include London, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, and Tokyo. When Lauren crosses the finish line on April 20th, she will not only have run the Boston Marathon, but she will have also completed her six star journey. In addition to all things running, Lauren also created her business Race Day Rangers as part of her running journey. It began with a sticker that Lauren created to help raise funds for her charity entry to Boston in 2020 (the marathon that never was), and that has grown into the business that it is today, which features marathon themed stickers, patches, flags, and more. For this year's Boston Marathon pre-race festivities, Lauren has teamed up with four other women (they're all also moms) who own small running-related businesses to create Brandhaus, which will be a pop-up store that'll be open over marathon weekend, Friday to Sunday. In addition to Race Day Rangers, Brandhaus includes Running with Grace, selling mantra bracelets; Pen and Paces, selling custom name bib kits, shoe bags, and more; TWENTYSIXDIAMOND, selling running jewelry; Running Peas, selling athletic apparel for kids; and Swift Running, selling carbon plated running shoes. Brandhaus will also have a full calendar of activities and activations. Find them at 332 Newbury Street.  There's an additional part of Lauren's story that's important to acknowledge, and I'm very thankful to Lauren for being so open about sharing this difficult part of her journey: during her six-star pursuit, Lauren experienced a miscarriage. Miscarriages are far more common than most people realize, and many people who experience them suffer in silence. Lauren let me know that she wishes people could feel more comfortable talking about these experiences, which is why she's decided to be so open about sharing this part of her story. Miscarriages are a deeply painful yet natural part of the reproductive process for so many people. So, yes, Lauren has been through many ups and many downs to get to where she is today—and so much will come to fruition around this year's Boston Marathon. It has been a truly transformational journey, and she shares it all in this episode. From this Episode Lauren Nutter on Instagram: @marathonlauren Race Day Rangers on Instagram: @racedayrangers More from WRS WRS is on Substack: womensrunningstories.substack.com To support WRS, please rate and review the show iTunes/Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/womens-running-stories/id1495427631 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4F8Hr2RysbV4fdwNhiMAXc?si=1c5e18155b4b44fa Music Credits Cormac O'Regan, of Playtoh Coma-Media, via Pixabay DELOSound, via Pixabay Music of the Future, via Pixabay chillmore, via Pixabay penguinmusic, via Pixabay Ways to Connect and Engage with Women's Running Stories WRS Instagram: @womensrunningstories Facebook: facebook.com/WomensRunningStories Website: womensrunningstories.com

One of our favorite sayings here at How to Really Run a City is that there are really three political parties in the U.S.: Democrats, Republicans and Mayors — and only one of them have no choice but to be practical problem solvers. We believe if more politicians acted like mayors, there'd be much less bickering in D.C. Turns out, Bloomberg Philanthropies agrees. For the past six years, the civic-minded global organization has held the  Mayors Challenge, a competition that awards cities $1 million prizes to spur innovative solutions to ingrained urban problems. This week, Challenge leader Aparna Ramanan and Challenge grantee, Lafayette, LA Mayor Monique Blanco Boulet, join former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Citizen Co-Founder Larry Platt for an eye-opening conversation about what it takes to innovate in a city. (Lafayette's problem might sound familiarly stinky to Philadelphians: old, failing, sewers.) Blanco Boulet believes true innovation must start with a change of mindset. "Critical thinking is just not natural in government. If I don't know where we're having flood issues, I could just choose anywhere [to put the money]. That happens. That's not abnormal for government in the absence of real decision-making." Join us for an episode about cities tackling entrenched problems and the public-private partnerships like Bloomberg Philanthropies that support them.  When it comes to facing these intractable issues, as Nutter said, "You have to deal with the consequences of not." On this episode, our hosts, former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Citizen Co-founder Larry Platt, invite onto the show a guest well-known to our mayors.   Jannet Walker-Ford is a nationally recognized transportation expert who worked on the recently released Special Event Transportation — Guidance and Opportunities Playbook (SetGo) to help transit agencies navigate "mega-events" like the upcoming FIFA World Cup and the many semiquincentennial celebrations across the country. "How do you use these events for engines of future growth?" asked Platt. "It's part of our playbook," she said. "We want to sustain those collaborations and relationships, as well as changes in infrastructure, processing and procedures. [And] really pulling in stakeholders — that's the important piece." Another piece that's important: Everyday residents who still need to get to work or open their businesses despite large-scale disruptions. "You've got to be thinking about them and engaging the community so they survive the event," Walker-Ford said. "You're in a unique position," Reed responded, "who do you see out here getting things right?" Walker-Ford named former guest Mayor Karen Bass in Los Angeles, Seattle and Salt Lake City, Mayor Quinton Lucas in Kansas City — and even Philadelphia and SEPTA. "Getting stakeholders on the same page … can be tough," Nutter said. "It's great in our speeches, though!" Reed laughed. "It makes us sound super innovative." "This guy is a fanatic about economic development," said Platt. "He's turned Allentown into Pennsylvania's third-fastest growing city." "We had this idea that you could still make stuff in cities," Tuerk replied. "Soot and smog-filled cities are not what the future of manufacturing looks like. Manufacturing needs people. It needs good, high-paying jobs. There are a lot of folks that came to Allentown looking to tap into the American Dream. Empowering people should be our motivation."  Then Platt prompted Tuerk to show off his unique Allentown flair. "I have the city seal tattooed on my chest," Tuerk declared, unfastening a few buttons on his shirt. "That's commitment," Nutter said with a laugh. Join us for an entertaining and informative episode about a city with its first Latino mayor "restoring a little bit of faith in the power of government to actually meet people's needs." As cities go, so goes the nation!

As Mayor Barnett points out, there really is no Republican or Democrat way to fill a pothole. You just fill the pothole. On this episode of Nature Revisited, contributing interviewer Scott Chaskey sits down with Lance to discuss his 8-year process and deep research involved in writing the first biography of Peter Matthiessen, the novelist, naturalist, and Zen roshi, whose trailblazing work championed Native American rights and helped usher in the modern environmental movement. Drawing upon a multitude of sources, interviews, and even re-enacting Matthiessen's 250-mile trek across the Himalayas, Richardson describes the multi-faceted writer's uncanny ability to sense connections between ecological decline, racism, and labor exploitation—to express, eloquently and presciently, that “in a damaged human habitat, all problems merge.” https://www.lancenrichardson.com/ True Nature book: https://www.lancenrichardson.com/truenature Listen to Nature Revisited on your favorite podcast apps, on YouTube, or at https://noordenproductions.com Subscribe on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/bdz4s9d7 Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/5n7yx28t Subscribe on Youtube Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/bddd55v9 Podlink: https://pod.link/1456657951 Support Nature Revisited https://noordenproductions.com/support Nature Revisited is produced by Stefan van Norden and Charles Geoghegan. Global executive and board director Shannon Nutter shines a light on the disturbing trend of "quiet takedowns," the silent extraction of leaders (especially women leaders) from organizations. Often done subtly and quietly, this behavior is costing us tremendous talent and potential. Embracing leadership vulnerability creates a culture where leaders grow and thrive instead of disappearing. Shannon's early-in-career belief that leaders need to always have all the answers and lead with a "command and control" style has been replaced by something more powerful. "When I build teams, I focus on prioritizing a sense of psychological safety and trust. I build teams who actively debate each other and aren't afraid to tell me when I am wrong." Staying focused and authentic is key. "Don't be anyone else's version of a leader. And never, ever shrink yourself to make someone else comfortable." This episode has been sponsored by Meter. "They want a job they can get to in 15 minutes, they want a hospital or pharmacy within 15 minutes, they want a park or a grocery store or bars or restaurants, all within 15 minutes." Bibb went on to explain to our hosts, former Philly mayor Michael Nutter and former Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed, how he is turning his Ohio city into a convenient, accessible, bona fide 15-minute city — and what is needed to sustain that work. "People really want walkability," Bibb said. "They want safety and thriving neighborhoods and overall thriving cities. But we as mayors can't do this by ourselves. We need a federal government that's actually working. It has to be working with our governors and mayors." Bibb, a charismatic 38-year-old (and cousin to the first Black primetime newscaster in Ohio), will almost certainly be reelected next week, and both Reed and Nutter quickly picked up on his "get sh*t done" vibe. "A mayor is a reflection of their city," Reed said, "how it feels and how it will be there [for its people]."  "Absolutely," Nutter said. The number of women being pushed out of the mainstream workplace will reach 1 million this year - and often when it looks like she has voluntarily left, it was actually a planned takedown. So what is the planned takedown? Anywhere from 12-24 months, there begins to be a mobilization facilitated by someone in authority around both your day to day duties, and also your overarching responsibilities. There may begin to be questioning around your work or the value of it, when not long ago you had been receiving praise. The workplace was designed by white men for white men, and each day, organizations are becoming quite unabashed and unapologetic about their true desires. This transcends gender, and into the generational gaps that are being formed by younger generations who refuse to maintain the status quo of oppression. As a result, Duane developed a taste for cooking that straddled different worlds. After some stints in a few Seattle restaurants, he eventually moved to Atlanta to work with the legendary Chef Darryl Evans at the Four Seasons Hotel, and he then accepted a position as Executive Chef at One Flew South, an oasis of quality dining for travelers passing through the Atlanta Airport. On Boards Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2025 34:30 Transcription Available

In this episode of On Boards, hosts Joe Ayoub and Raza Shaikh welcome Tom Rosedale, a partner at the law firm of Nutter McClennen & Fish.  Tom serves as chair of the firm's Corporate and Transactions Department and is a member its Executive Committee.  Tom has 27+ years of experience as a corporate attorney and regularly advises public and private company boards of directors in tech, life sciences and more. He has also served on the board of directors of multiple companies including Caring Cross,  Vector BioMed, and AMD Global Telemedicine.  The discussion with Tom underscores how evaluation processes can enhance accountability and productivity and address underperforming board members in a constructive manner. Key Takeaways Introduction of a board evaluation process Tom discusses a company with a board of directors with strong members but with members who were distracted, unengaged and unprepared in meetings. A new lead director pushed for change and asked Tom to work with him to develop and implement a peer evaluation process. The evaluation process was very well received, it included rankings of each board member, written feedback and questions on the functionality of committees. It had major impact on the function of the board and, ultimately, board composition.  2. Addressing board member underperformance Boards should apply some form of structured evaluation to regularly address performance issues and avoid abrupt dismissals.  3. Encouraging board diversity to improve strategic oversight A board composition that includes a diversity of perspectives whether by age, background, expertise or otherwise improves strategic oversight and innovation. Adding new members to the board as the company grows, changes, faces new challenges brings in different perspectives and approaches that will allow the board to perform at a high level.  4. Board and shareholders impact on executive compensation  Company executives used to receive compensation in the form of stock options but now many corporations are issuing stock, RSUs and guaranteed bonuses. Compensation amounts have increased exponentially over the last few decades, even though there is an increased focus on it.  When it comes to executive compensation, board members need to remember that their role is to represent shareholders and to make the right decisions on behalf of the company.    Quotes "The evaluation process works well when there's a culture of accountability and no surprises." "Ultimately, board members must prioritize representing shareholders and making decisions in their best interests." “ If shareholders feel that a board is approving compensation or not holding people accountable for poor performance, then shareholders should vote for other board candidates.” “The best functioning boards are the boards that don't stagnate. It's boards that don't have all 65-year-old guys who come from the same industry.” Guest Bio Tom Rosedale chairs Nutter McClennen & Fish's Corporate and Transactions Department and is a member of the firm's Executive Committee. He primarily advises clients on public and private company securities law matters including public offerings, ATM transactions, registered direct offerings and equity lines of credit (ELOCs)), mergers and acquisitions (public and private), venture capital transactions, and general corporate matters. Tom also represents family offices with their many diverse legal needs. He regularly advises public and private company boards of directors and clients on executive employment matters and incentive compensation arrangements. Tom also serves as outside general counsel to clients in various industries. Prior to joining Nutter, Tom founded and served as the managing member of a boutique corporate law firm for 19 years. Before that, he served as Associate General Counsel of CMGI, Inc. and Vice President and General Counsel of AltaVista Company.  Tom founded and co-founded several companies, including Corporate Filing Solutions (sold to Northwest Registered Agents), PackageFox (sold to Lojistic), Newfound Research, and Top Shelf Dog. He has served on the board of directors of multiple companies, including Caring Cross Inc., Vector BioMed, AMD Global Telemedicine (sold to Unidoc), Top Shelf Dog, Red Systems (dba Delegated.com and sold to Zirtual), and Newfound Research.

Traditional sales tactics often fall flat in today's B2B landscape, especially when dealing with high-ticket deals. Former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and former Philly Mayor Michael Nutter sat down with Diane Kalen-Sukra, a former city manager, current evangelist for political civility and author of Save Your City: How Toxic Culture Kills Community & What To Do About It — the perfect guest to explain how we can bring down the temperature of our political conversations … and what happens if we don't. “Incivility exists on a spectrum,” Kalen-Sukra said, “but it leads to mobbing, harassment, then threats, then violence, and ultimately civil war.” “Has there been an inflection point over the last 10, 15 years, where you saw an uptick in incivility?” Nutter asked. “And when we have a conversation about what happened,” Reed interjected, “The President of the United States has traditionally been the exemplar of behavior and decorum. Donald Trump opened up a tear in the fabric of our society.” “There's no question that our social fabric is unraveling right now,” Kalen-Sukra responded. “And unless we address incivility intentionally, it is only going to escalate. It spreads like a contagion.” Also on this episode's Accelerator for America policy segment, the mayors discuss the role of bipartisanship in these times and the importance of “keeping the American team together.” Remember to subscribe to the podcast to keep up on all the latest episodes. You can even watch the conversation play out on YouTube. As cities go, so goes the nation!

In this episode of "A Life Well Lived: A Physician's Guide to Wealth," James Nutter emphasizes the importance of time and how it is the most valuable resource we have. He shares an exercise he does every year to audit his time and evaluate how he spent it.  By categorizing things to leave behind, people to leave behind, things to bring forward, and the best moments and people of the previous year, he is able to prioritize joy and fulfillment in his life. Nutter encourages listeners to schedule time to do this exercise and experience the rewards of intentional time management. Time is the most valuable asset we have, and unlike money, it cannot be replenished once it's gone. An annual time audit can significantly enhance awareness of how time is spent and assist in making intentional decisions for future joy and productivity. Categorizing experiences into areas to continue or discontinue can lead to progressively more fulfilling years. The exercise includes a review of photos, calendars, and even financial statements to evaluate past activities and expenditures. Scheduling time and space to conduct such an audit is essential for gaining the most from the exercise.
