Thank you so. So MUCH for the music. Godspeed, maestro Sergio. You'll always be in my heart. ❤️

What do you call a music scene with no name? The lack of a commonly-accepted moniker for the mid-to-late 90s movement centred around Ninja Tune and Gilles Peterson amongst others is a real anomaly in contemporary music. One of the most interesting insights from our guest this week, Mr Scruff, is the revelation not even the DJs themselves referred to it as anything in particular. That's pretty crazy! This is a great conversation, a classic episode even. Rolando grew up in south west Detroit, a primarily Hispanic district of the city, he was heavily influenced by his Latin cultural rhythms and percussion. Inspired from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the Latino community. It was later when he heard Jeff Mills in 1985 as "The Wizard" that he discovered the innovative sounds of Techno. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Mike Banks and joined the enigmatic Underground Resistance in 1994. In 1999 'Jaguar' although not Rolando's first release on UR turned perceptions of Techno on their head, breaking into other genres of dance music and becoming an all time classic in the boxes of DJs such as Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Oakenfold, and Gilles Peterson. The track has a long legacy of reworking and lives on to this day many years later inspiring audiences from all genres. In November 2004, Rolando left both Underground Resistance and his Los Hermanos project behind.2014 saw Rolando launch his own label R3 ( Roland Rocha Records) and has more or less exclusively released his own music on his label since. Rolando now a Dj for more than thirty –five years continues to work internationally as a Dj , producer and Remixer with an eclectic clientele such as Marcel Dettman, Kraftwerk, D'Julz, Ben Sims, Skudge, A Sagittariun. A djembe led future soul burner blessed by the legendary London vocalist Colonel Red's scorching voice. Sounding like a 90's R&B jam thrown into the future before morphing into a 3am dancefloor blazer - definitely one for all the freaks out there. The remix package is a massive shout to Edseven's varied tastes and influences, enlisting a murderers' row of friends and overseas contacts to reinterpret the original. Japan's Grooveman Spot providing a heavy heavy classic Jazzy Sport beatdown version whilst Canadian due Potatohead People flip it into a dripping 80's Boogie track. Episode 169: Carleen Anderson - Singer, Songwriter, Composer, Producer, Arranger, Writer...My latest podcast guest Carleen Anderson really needs no introduction. A genuine world class artist... She's such a huge talent in her own right and another to enter Paul Weller's orbit during the solo years - providing us with some very special moments on record and live.Throughout her solo career, she's been featured alongside a multitude of established artists from a wide array of musical genres - Nigel Kennedy, Dr. John, Omar, Chrissie Hynde, Jocelyn Brown, Meshell Ndgeocello, Paul McCartney, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Ramsay Lewis and more...The Huffington Post called her "Without doubt one of the all-time great female vocalists... Carleen must be seen to be believed..."Amy Winehouse once said "Carleen Anderson - She's someone who I would sit around the venue all day, just to hear her soundcheck..."On this exclusive podcast chat, we hear about her upbringing in Houston, Texas where she was raised by her paternal grandparents during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Reared up on the sounds rooted in Gospel music inherited from the Pentecostal church where the pastor, David Anderson, Sr. her paternal Grandfather, and her Grandmother Alberta, raised her from an infant. We'll hear stories of her musical family. She is the daughter of soul singer Vicki Anderson, step-daughter of singer, songwriter, Bobby Byrd... and god-daughter of James Brown!. Her birth Father, Dr. Reuben P. Anderson, Sr., is the pastor of his own church in Compton, California, further extending the connection Carleen still retains in gospel music. We'll hear about her relocation with her son to England in 1990 and the just-by-chance beginning of her professional career as the vocalist, composer, arranger and recording artist for Young Disciples. The band were shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize in 1992.Carleen released her debut solo album in 1994, and was nominated for a Independent Artist Brit Award in 1995.Our connections with Paul Weller begin with Young Disciples as their album was recorded at Solid Bond Studio, and take us through Paul's debut solo album through standout highlights on Stanley Road -especially their spine-tingling shared vocals on Wings of Speed, a co-produced Carleen Anderson album called Blessed Burden in 1998, and performances on record and on stage around Illumination and Studio 150 - complete with two DVD releases of those Weller gigs...Carleen was named Jazz FM's UK Vocalist of 2013 and four years later, musicologist Gilles Peterson presented her with a Worldwide FM Lifetime Achievement Award. These days, Carleen is focused on establishing a platform to expand the stylings of music storytelling theatre. Her most recent album - Cage Street Memorial - was nominated in 2018 for Jazz FM's Innovation of the Year. The project was more than just an album of original music, it was also a theatre production written and performed by Carleen, and an autobiographical book of the same name.Since 2020, she has been working on what she describes as "a blended-roots Opera called MELIOR Opus Griot" with a regional premiere in Devon and a worldwide double album release scheduled for 2024. Nicola Conte, a talented Italian DJ, producer, guitarist, and bandleader, has gained recognition for his distinctive contributions to the acid jazz genre. Growing up in the charming city of Bari in southern Italy, he always had a deep passion for expressing himself through music.Inspired by his journeys to London and influenced by what was happening between jazz and clubs in the UK with people like Paul Murphy and Gilles Peterson, Nicola embarked on a mission to cultivate an alternative cultural scene by putting on parties with other forward-thinking DJs and musicians within Bari. This led him to establish the renowned Fez Club - a vibrant space where individuals could fully immerse themselves in an entirely new world inspired by London's dynamic cultural landscape. In doing so, Nicola laid the groundwork for what would become known as the Italian acid jazz movement. Through his creativity and musical prowess, Nicola has left an indelible mark on the industry while continuing to captivate audiences worldwide with his unique soundscapes.I'm highly grateful for having the chance to sit down with Nicola, as he also shared advice on spreading culture by studying music and great insights for aspiring DJs and musicians who want to express themselves through music. Like most multi-genre music fans, London-based Ruby Savage approaches DJing through a wide-angle lens. Whether she's touring, playing her post-punk disco party, In Flames, or hosting her monthly show on NTS, the Amsterdam native opts for warm, bouncy tunes that traverse dub, jazz and '80s proto-house. As she once Mixmag, she isn't beat-matching but "heartbeat-matching." For her, a dance is a means to feeling the full spectrum of emotions in a healthy way. Years spent behind-the-scenes at influential institutions have added to her understanding of energy and flow. She's worked the counter at Honest Jon's Records, managed Theo Parrish's Sounds Signature label (plus created the Wildheart Recordings sister label) and Gilles Peterson's Brownswood imprint, in addition to helping the Worldwide FM don launch Arc Records. When she's not DJing, Savage is spearheading community initiatives like Don't Be A Creep, an educational platform about club safety, as well as Artist Recovery Club for creative growth among music-makers. For her RA podcast, the vinyl enthusiast crafted a house music odyssey through soul, disco and gospel-inflected cuts like "Glory" by Waajeed and Dames Brown. It's an uplifting excursion through joy, catharsis and self-affirmation, relayed straight from the heart. @kwasiba3000 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/895

Show Time, enjoy this week's episode hosted by Spanish DJ & Producer KIKO NAVARRO. Carving out an enviable reputation across the globe for his distinctive and highly personal brand of House music, Kiko Navarro's voyage of sonic discovery has been going strong for almost three decades now. Born in Mallorca, Kiko's sound reflects the sun-drenched, slow living atmosphere of the Balearic island he still calls home. Obsessed from an early age with the more soulful side of US House music, Navarro's DJ skills soon attracted the attention of nightlife behemoth Pacha who offered him club residencies both in Palma and in Ibiza. Next came a monthly gig at Space Ibiza and the rest, as they say, is history. Despite having been DJing for more than a quarter of a century, Kiko Navarro is constantly growing and developing his style; it's an approach that keeps him in constant demand at some of the most prestigious nightclubs on the planet. From London to the Far East, Kiko has travelled the far and wide with his music, embracing sounds from each continent as he goes. Equally at home on festival stages at Southport Weekender and Southern Soul Festival or in some dark, underground sweat-box, Kiko's passion is palpable; his music selection is impeccable. Inspired by his experiences as a DJ, Kiko Navarro brought a multitude of influences into the studio as he began to master the art of production. Underpinned by his obvious devotion to House music, Kiko's love of afro-latin sounds has been evident in his feel-good, dance-floor oriented productions since the very beginning. His connection to Pacha led to several releases on the label as well as a mixed compilation ‘The Latin Sound Of Pacha' which was issued on Tommy Boy records in 2001. Working with many of the world's most respected imprints such as Local Talk, King Street Sounds and Osunlade's Yoruba Records attracted an impressive list of top flight DJs to Kiko's music, ranging all the way from Gilles Peterson on one end of the musical spectrum to Jeff Mills on the other. Following several busy years spent touring the world as the official DJ for the Ducati Marlboro Moto GP Team, Kiko locked himself away in the studio, emerging in 2017 with a new solo album: ‘Everything Happens For A Reason'. Released on BBE Records, a label renowned for quality music of all shades, the album is gaining plaudits from across the musical community thanks to its warmth, originality and soul. Ten years on from his debut LP ‘Perceptions', Kiko revisited its biggest hit ‘Soñando Contigo', creating a brand new ‘Orchestral' version for 2017 and in the process paying homage to the track that made him famous. Featuring special guest appearances from DJ Spen, Concha Buika, Boris Dlugosch and Julie McKnight, ‘Everything Happens For A Reason' displays each shade of Kiko's musical palette in vivid Technicolor. A true Renaissance Man; now also a family man, today's Kiko Navarro is perhaps even more focused and dedicated to his life in music than ever before. An album tour this year will see him play DJ sets in Italy, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Japan, South Korea, China with many more to be confirmed. Whether in the studio crafting records or in the club controlling the dance-floor, Kiko's musical mission has become the habit of a lifetime. Enjoy this Afro House special journey with the one & only KIKO NAVARRO live from Tel Aviv! N/A This show is syndicated & distributed exclusively by Syndicast. STR4TA - "Turn Me Around" from the 2022 album STR4TASFEAR on Brownswood. Just before the world shut down in 2020, renowned DJ/record label owner Gilles Peterson joined acid jazz legend Jean-Paul Maunick (better known as "Bluey") for an improvised jam session in Bluey's parents' garden shed in London. The result became STR4TA, and last year's debut LP, Aspects, draws influence from the '70s/'80s Brit-Funk sound they both grew up with.  Their sophomore full-length, STR4TASFEAR, will be released on November 10th via Peterson's own Brownswood Recordings, and is described by Peterson in a press release as "a continuation from our first project, celebrating the ground breaking Brit-Funk era of the late 70s/ early 80s while continuing the story with the rise of the drum machine; paying homage to the Acid Jazz and Electro Soul that followed and the evolution that inspired club culture and new Jazz of recent times." He continues, "For me it's a record of parallels, not only in music but a lot of the issues we are experiencing today began in that Brit-Funk era. The parallels in the political landscape of that time and today are poignant and the moment of overall change we are living in is reflected in this record. Bluey is a significant executer of exhibiting the important social questions through music from a Black British perspective and it's an honour to work with him." As broadcast September 24, 2022.  Tonight we both paid tribute to our spiritual hero on The Drop and marked a momentous year in 2006, as Gilles Peterson both started his own record label in Brownswood Recordings and dropped an exquisite mix for Defected Records and their "In The House" DJ mix series.  We played the former in parts 1 through 3 of the show (at least CD 1, that is), and then highlighted some of the great talent on Brownwood Recordings nowadays with names like Kamaal Williams, Dayme Arocena, Kokoroko, and The Twilite Tone given time to stretch before the end of the show.Tracklist (st:rt)Part I-IIIGilles Peterson In The House (CD1)Part IV Kamaal Williams - Snitches BrewKokoroko - AdwaKokoroko - Age of AscentDayme Arocena - Lo Que FueDayme Arocena - Mambo Na MaThe Twilite Tone - Do It Properly

American @tonebnimble has been a vital part of the dance music underground since growing up in Chicago in the mid-eighties. He's one of those artists who has always stayed under the radar but is a firm favourite with those who know, from Sadar Bahar to Gilles Peterson. Part of that is because of the faultless labels he runs which shine a light on both lesser known and more modern soul, disco and gospel gems. First, there was Al-Tone Edits with Al Bum, and then came Rain&Shine which put out eight volumes of Tone's magnificent Soul is My Salvation series. All of these life-enriching sounds old and new are served up on this week's mix in a positively uplifting fashion. It's a glorious selection of soul-stirring songs, funky disco bombs and golden gospel grooves that work in just about any setting, at any time of day. Mixes as irresistible as this are as much education as they are entertainment, and they should really make us thankful for diggers like Tone B. Nimble who work so exhaustively to bring us such high-grade musical pleasures.

MJ Cole on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 7/12/22 About MJ Cole - One of U.K. garage's first true stars, MJ Cole's work has spanned Mercury Prize-nominated albums and a lengthy career as a remixer and producer. His widely praised 2000 debut Sincere was a landmark release for the genre, taking the pirate radio-bred sound aboveground by emphasizing its soul and R&B influences. Following 2003's Cut to the Chase, a guest-heavy set that touched on U.K. hip-hop and ragga, Cole remained busy remixing artists like Mariah Carey and Amy Winehouse, collaborating with artists ranging from Dizzee Rascal to Bruno Mars, and continually exploring rhythms with his solo EPs and singles. He returned to his classical roots with 2020's MJ Cole Presents Madrugada. While growing up in London, Cole studied the oboe and piano, ultimately earning a degree in music from City University. He also immersed himself in electronic music culture, working as a tape operator and engineer for the drum'n'bass label SOUR. Cole issued a breakbeat single as Morf in 1995. While working on Ramsey & Fen's 2-step remixes for Kym Mazelle in 1996, he caught the garage bug and worked on numerous productions as well as remixes for Soul II Soul, Goldie, Gwen McRae, Another Level, and State of Mind. He started releasing garage singles under his own name in 1997, and a few as Box Clever, including one of the first releases on Prolific Recordings, which he founded in 1998.  Cole's song "Sincere," recorded using a sampler and Atari, was released via AM:PM the same year, and was one of the first Top 40-charting garage singles. Soon after, Cole signed to Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label, which released the "Crazy Love" single in May 2000 and the full-length Sincere that July. The album's quick, crisp production style earned him a Brit Award nomination as well as a Mercury Prize nomination. Cole released another album, 2003's Cut to the Chase with Talkin' Loud, before leaving the label in 2004. That year, he began releasing a steady stream of singles and EPs on Prolific, issuing collaborations with Tubby T, Wiley, and Elisabeth Troy (who had previously sung on "Crazy Love"). During this time, he remixed artists such as Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, and Mariah Carey, took his DJ set on the road, and composed music for television ad campaigns. His own Riddim EP appeared in 2010.  Over the next several years, he co-wrote songs with Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith, remixed tracks by Jess Glynne and Adam F, and produced tracks for Dizzee Rascal and Katy B while also finding time to release his own music on the Panoramic EP. Lobster Boy Records issued the single "Alcatraz" in 2016. The following year, he returned with "Shelter" featuring Bruno Major, the DJ Zinc collaboration "Interbass," and the solo single "Pictures in My Head." The material kept on coming in 2018 with the Kojey Radical collaboration "Soak It Up," the Foundations EP, and "Waking Up" featuring Freya Ridings. 2020 saw Cole release his first album in 17 years, one he had always wanted to make. Inspired by his early classical background, Presents Madrugada, released on Decca, was an instrumental album of piano and strings with a soaring, transcendent, filmic quality. In 2021, Cole collaborated with Rudimental and Josh Barry on the single "Remember Their Names." ~ Heather Phares & Paul Simpson   About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Chris Bangs has been a pioneering and inspirational figure in the British underground dance scene and helped to light up the burgeoning black music dance scene of the early eighties.  Towards the end of the 80s, Chris really hit pay dirt as a musical trend-setter with the invention of Acid Jazz genre and as a producer and artist responsible for many early recordings on Eddie Piller's Acid Jazz label and Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud (producing Galliano's celebrated debut album). His talents were soon spotted outside of the acid jazz scene with Paul Weller utilising Chris' production skills on one of the stand out tracks from his debut solo album - Above The Clouds. The song is a favourite of so many fans, and Paul still features it on current tours. This liaison led to a partnership with Paul's former Style Council-er Mick Talbot as Yada Yada AKA SoundscapeUK - one of a whole range of projects marked by the Bangs stamp that have secured commercial and critical acclaim from the USA, Japan, Europe and Australia.
