American artist Introspekt (@sageintrospekt) has a sound rooted in the darker side of UKG but comes at it from a unique perspective that incorporates elements of US garage and ballroom. The LA-born, NYC-based talent has now made her mark in Europe as a DJ and a producer on labels like Eris Drew and Octo Octa's T4T LUV NRG. Her style blends heavy basslines, diva vocals and well-crafted broken beats into something that harks back to the sounds that once came out of the likes of Paradise Garage and Club Zanzibar, always with a focus on bringing up her own community. She says that the idea behind this week's mix was "to take the listener on a journey through tech-garage sonics and intergalactic dancehall rhythms." Tracks of her own and those from Skream, Holloway, Hatcha, Phuturistix and many more all plot a line through earth-shatteringly heavy rhythms from across the past, present and future of garage, dubstep and bass. It's a mix aimed at both body and head from this formidable talent and is a great taste of what to expect from her when she plays Dekmantel Festival later in the year.

When DJs and producers @eris-drew and @octoocta first met, they felt an instant connection that has only grown over the years. Kindred spirits in both music and life, the pair released their first split EP entitled Devotion in 2018, sharing the same artistic values that make their music deeply moving in all senses of the word. Their DJ sets, meanwhile, light up the dancefloor — their back to backs can be as bombastic and high-energy as they are personal and emotive, speaking to a healing force that seems to drive all of their work. In this episode, we discuss their b2bs, their joint tour and label, @T4TLUVNRG, and their collaborative project Alchemical Sisters — the latest addition to a cosmic world in full colour. ++ Music: "Late Night Love" - Octo Octa (2023) "My Body is Powerful" - Octo Octa (2019) "Trans Love Vibration" - Eris Drew & Octo Octa (Eris Goes to Church) "A Howling Wind" - Eris Drew (2021) ++ Follow AIR Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/airpodcast

New York's dance music culture evolves every weekend. A constant wave of new collectives, promoters and artists, combined with a host of legacy names and an ever-growing batch of enthusiastic ravers, infuse the city with a vivacious energy that's hard to find elsewhere. This episode of Reflections, a series that digs deep into RA content, pays tribute to New York nightlife through three heartfelt anecdotes that capture the vibrancy of past and present communities. Taken from RA's new limited-edition book Sacred Spaces, each message focuses on special party moments. Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy describes her quest to seek spirituality and communal transcendence through music, focusing on her experiences at David Mancuso's seminal The Loft party. Sharon White, a veteran name in New York's clubbing history, recounts the night of her unexpected debut at The Saint, an East Village spot that operated during the 1980s. The impromptu set went until 2 PM in the afternoon, leading the way for White to become one of the top grossing DJs on The Saint's roster. Finally, RA's editor-in-chief Whitney Wei describes coming of age at Palisades, an intimate Bushwick venue that lasted only two years but considerably shaped her club experiences. Sacred Spaces, available for £29.99 via the RA Store, features 26 tributes to the dance by the likes of Kevin Saunderson, Róisín Murphy, Eris Drew and Octo Octa, among others.

This week's Local Selection Mix comes from one of our favourite Irish DJs at the moment, Caoimhe. The thriving up and comer has provided yet another excellent trip through her record stacks, running through tribal, house, acid, techno, breaks and a whole lot more. County Antrim native Caoimhe began her DJ career in early 2019 and quickly rose through the ranks, catching the eyes of industry tastemakers in Ireland and the UK. Caoimhe had won three major DJ competitions in quick succession including a Breezeblock event to support Octo Octa, the AVA Festivals emerging DJ competition and the Mixmag and Coors Light DJ contest. These competitions led to Caoimhe supporting Octa Octa for Breezeblock who have been running some of Belfasts best club nights, opening up the coveted main stage at AVA Festival which is no mean feet for any DJ and lastly throwing it down at the Lab London for Mixmag. In 2021 Caoimhe was nominated for best Irish Electronic artist in the Hot Press reader's poll and was voted number 5 overall and at the start of 2022 joined the list of legendary NI artists like Kessler who have recorded at HÖR Berlin! Caoimhe has a broad spanning sound that routes around house, acid and electro. The County Antrim native superbly executes long and short blends with adroitness and ferocity when needed. Caoimhe has been known to play a rather uptempo and pumping style of house music, with lots of catchy vocals, bouncy baselines and uplifting chords. Caoimhe's carefully selected a varied yet perfectly crafted hour of selections for her Local Selection Mix. Jolting chords, squelchy acid, syncopated drum rhythms, jacking house anthems…this mix is ticking all the right boxes, perfect for the start, middle or end of the party. Caoimhe maintains the energy with supreme poise and pulls the trigger at the pinical moments. This is your Wednesday soundtrack. Lyss is one half of the Caucus Kollektiv, which she created with close friend C/EL. The latter had previously featured on SceneNoise’s Select Episode 130, during which ‘La Radio Kollektiv’ was launched to boost spirits of and showcase local Lebanese artists during the party scene pauses of the pandemic. Since her teenage years, Lyss has been diving deeper into the vast sea of electronic music subgenres while adding her own touches to it. To Lyss, mixing is about experimenting with genres and playing through emotion, as opposed to what is ‘supposed’ to be played or committing to one genre. Her library is often characterised by industrial techno, groovy-house, and soul. In this episode, though, she’s swinging between house, electro, and breakbeat to express a portrayal of love, anger, nostalgia, and most importantly hope. The mix features Octo Octa, Nexus 21, Solah from Material, and Sakanat’s Mehdi M.
DJ and producer Eris Drew runs the T4T LUV NRG recording label with, her partner in music and life,Octo Octa. In this episode we talk about finding musical success later in life after years of struggle and Eris's experience of coming out as a trans woman in her late 30s. DJ and producer Eris Drew talks to Octo Octa, Jayda G, and Kate Pierson of The B-52's about who they’ve remixed recently, why it's hard to do DJ mixes and not be able to look at the crowd, why 1950s rock'n'roll is important for dance music, and the role positivity plays in their music. Eris is a transgender DJ and producer, originally from Chicago, who started raving in the early 90s, eventually mastering the art of vinyl DJing. She now tours the world playing back-to-back with her partner in life and music, Octo Octa, the ecstatic House producer and DJ based in New Hampshire. They run the T4T LUV NRG record label together. Also on the show is Jayda G, a Grammy-nominated Canadian DJ and producer now based in London, who has made a huge impression on the underground dance scene over the last few years. She released her debut album Significant Changes on the Ninja Tune label in 2019. She’s also a scientist, having studied environmental toxicology. And finally, we have musical royalty with Kate Pierson. A singer, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist, and co-founder of one of the world's most famous rock'n'roll bands, the B-52’s. They defined rock through the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s with hits such as Love Shack, Roam, Private Idaho, and Rock Lobster.
Bside Incoming: Hannah D We are hoping you had a very Merry Christmas and that you're not missing a big festive party too much, because this week's guest has really got us itching to be back on the dance floor. She's a top class selector with a real passion for her local scene, born into a musical family with strong early influences, and always pushing herself down new and exciting avenues on her journey of musical discovery. We proudly present Hannah D. With a musical passion pumping through her veins Hannah is a longtime supporter of her thriving local music scene in Brisbane. From enthusiastic punter, to music journalist with 6AM AT THE GARAGE and the now-defunct Pulse Radio. She co-founded The Space Between Us with Emma Stevenson to promote local talent and friends from the scene before evolving the project into a well respected record label and artist management company. "The signing of all local acts did not happen consciously whatsoever - it came about purely from not feeling the need to branch further afield to hear great music” - Hannah D After several years of promoting the talent of her friends and putting the local artists of Brisbane onto the map, they returned the favour by inviting her to play the supporting slot with DJ Slyngshot… it must have gone well because she never looked back and is now considered up their with the city's best, having shared line-ups with the likes of Floating Points, Legowelt, Francis Inferno Orchestra, Octo Octa, Eris Drew and Hunee. This one is a very welcome return to an episode of strictly electronica, getting things moving with some italo and hip house, before settling in with progressive hypnotic house and extraterrestrial electro breaks. Inspired by house, techno, hip hop, dubstep, indie rock, jazz and the rich history and present day music scene of New York City, Alex Burkat (@burkat) brings his own perspective to the decks and draws inspiration from everywhere. His first release EP, Shower Scene, was inspired by a night of dancing at one of the Mister Saturday Night parties, resulting in a release on their record label in March of 2013. Burkat released Tarot the same year, a 12" out now on Los Angeles-based label, 100% Silk, a four track compilation inspired by mysticism and global warming with a house-tinged sound. Since then, he has been busy releasing on such labels as Permanent Vacation, Third Ear Recordings, and the Nite Owl Diner. In addition to crafting fine-tuned electronic sounds, Burkat also runs his own parties series in Philadelphia, Ancient Puzzle Arts. From the artist: This mix was recorded briefly before the chaos of COVID-19. At the time, I was reflecting on some time spent in LA over the last two years, and a particularly incredible time seeing Eris Drew and Octo Octa in Philadelphia at Sanctuary City (shout out Elvin T and everyone involved), and wanted to connect some shared emotional motifs related to those experiences. I had a digital crate of about 100 songs I liked, did a one take jam, and this mix was the result. I personally like the energy of one-take-jam mixes, because I am over analytical about everything in life, so I need the zen of DJing to break from that pattern. Stu locks into the house beats in this mix while layering on top plenty of synth lines that will keep you dancing. Remixes of Kllo and Maribou State start things off. Then cuts from NAVVI and Octo Octa take the mix to a breakbeat groove that will have you nodding your head. Even though the mix mellows out by the time another great K-rAd track kicks, the backend of the mix is full of disco house vibes. A killer remix of Smokey Brights by Rudy Willingham jams along with an 'Old School' mix of Oliver Stumm. DJ Koze finishes off the mix with a classic tune. LEZZER QUEST have been tearing up many of Scotland's most revered venues, earning them a spot in The List's Hot 100 of 2019, and a place on Sub Club's roster of residents. Being part of SYS and LQ has allowed Anna to play alongside some of the scene's biggest names...Eris Drew and Octo Octa, to name a couple. This mix is what Bside is all about; a biography of her favourite records from her formative years and the musical influences that brought Anna to where she is today. This is a true journey through the genres, some disco, trance, hard house, even a Kate Bush track, and a healthy dose of “face melters" that can "inject a a dose of energy' into any party. The last episode recorded live in Glasgow before lockdown, from the Palais de Danse Records shop on Sauchiehall Street, this one's sure to bring some love to your Queerantine. Thanks to Molly Hickey for the beautiful artwork as always. www.instagram.com/mollyth.art/
INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 5:17 China is still battling endlessly to contain the outbreak and it continues to spread rapidly around the world, with cases rising in South Korea, Italy, the UK, and even right here in New York City. more than 2000 people have been put into quarantine. We’re starting to wonder if the US government is equipped to handle the severity of this situation. Luckily, there are a few people who have a solution. For the first half of the episode, Shannon chats with Slowcook. Based in Leeds, England and Beijing, @slowcook is a resident DJ at one of Beijing’s popular underground clubs called “Zhaodai”. She’s also the founder of Equalizer, a party and workshop series dedicated to CIS, non binary and trans women in music. The workshops serve as a safe place for female DJ's to learn skills on how to rock it behind the decks. The collective has bought a slew of talented DJ’s to run their workshops too like Eris Drew & Octo Octa, DJ Moxie and Sherelle. Having been in Beijing since the virus hit, Slowcook has seen firsthand just how much damage the virus has done to the middle kingdom and wanted to take action to help. I spoke to her about how shes been holding up through things and her recent curation in collaboration with her team mates in creating the "Home Fitness" Compilation. It’s a 19 track project filled with breaks, experimental beats and 4 &4 bangers, with all donations going towards helping healthcare workers on the frontline of the virus. ~ Tracklist “Daisy Chain” - Overmono “Floating Islands” - Nick León “Cut The Midrange” - Dubrunner Buy The Home Fitness Project - https://dcyy.bandcamp.com/album/home-fitness Follow Shannon @Shannon1DJ (Twitter) @Oh_ya_girl (Instagram) BE APART OF THE PATREON COMMUNITY - https://www.patreon.com/clubmanagement1
Eris Drew is one of those artists who seemed to blow up over night, but who had actually been hard at work for decades. A long-time residency at Chicago's Smart Bar brought her to international attention, and her own Motherbeat parties at various places around Europe furthered that reputation. It is there that she manages to cook up pure, unadulterated dance floor love and euphoria with hi-energy selections and a unifying sense of oneness that is put together with her own so called “orchestration” mixing techniques. An inquisitive musician and innovative recording artist, she has also just put out her debut solo EP on Interdimensional Transmissions and runs T4T LUV NRG with partner Octo Octa. This week's mix is all of the above and more: a throbbing, impulsive and full bodied experience that serves up the most bumping house grooves but run through with the warm ambient glow of a post-rave comedown. The music feels at classic but also thoroughly contemporary: it will make you pump your fist in sheer joy, but also sends warm waves of euphoria through your body. This is the sound of the Motherbeat. Eris on her mix: "In a recent interview for DJ Mag I talk about my connection to the song “Secrets of Mediation” by Dutch producers Alex Dijksterhuis (Jamez) & Gaston Steenkist (Dobre). At Chicago raves in 1994 and 1995, this track revealed to me that modern dance music contains archaic ritual elements such as trance-inducing resonances, penetrating sacred drums, and language transformed into glossolalia. My DJ mix for Dekmantel is inspired by my formative dance experiences and by the intense extended sets I play at psychedelic raves such as Motherbeat and No Way Back. The mix includes bass music, progressive, breaks, house, techno, and minimal, all of which I collage, drop and scratch to put us into a tunneling trance." Full tracklist here: dkmn.tl/270-ErisDrew

Read it in French: https://electrocorp.fr/2019/09/25/argot-american-dance-music-2/ We've been following the Chicago-based label Argot @argotmusic for years now, when its founder Steve Mizek was putting out stellar EPs from the likes of The Black Madonna, Octo Octa, Amir Alexander and many more. Since the beginning, the label's mission has always been the same: successfully promoting America's contemporary electronic music landscapes. Back in 2017, Argot released the first volume of "American Dance Music", a series of compilation showcasing homegrown U.S. talents, on which Steve assembled familiar faces as well as new ones, spotlighting diverse talents who make up American dance music. Two years later, the second volume is now coming out, offering another slice of the American scene as witnessed by Argot's founder. While not comprehensive, the 12 track digital compilation showcases a breadth of compelling sounds bubbling up around the U.S., encompassing everything from azure deep house and Midwest electro to glitchy pop and experimental compositions. We are thrilled to share with you "Icy Traverse", the opening title of the compilation. On this track, Chicago artist and Smatbar resident Garrett David @garrettdavid is teaming up again with Colin Johnson @colinsprojects(from Chicago too) after their collaborative work on Lobster Theremin in 2017. Here they deliver a pure house cut with a deep atmosphere filled with a beautiful energy. If you are familiar with Garrett David's work, you'll know what to expect. If not, we highly recommend you his entire discography, as well as Argot's. The compilation also features many fresh faces and contains debut tracks by Peoria, Illinois producer Bodyman and the Madison, Wisconsin-based duo Mazumi. Argot also welcomes to the fold Huey Mnemonic from Grand Rapids; Nikki Nair of Knoxville, Tennessee; Naeem from Pittsburgh; Washington DC duo Scattergood (Mike Petillo of Protect-U and Sami Yenigun of D.C. label 1432 R); Jeremy Castillo out of San Francisco; and veteran Atlanta producer TWINS. The Chicago contingent is strong as well, with tracks by Ariel Zetina, James N. Murray, and Richard Holhburn.

JAMES SHIZARU (Buffalo House Music Preservation Society / Buffalo, NY) Originally from Buffalo, NY, James Shizaru is an avid record collector and turntablist who draws influence from all genres of music, performing primarily with all vinyl. Whether he is cutting up jazz, funk, soul, boogie, and hip-hop records or out exploring the deeper sides of house, acid, and disco, he always aims to keep it deep. The mix begins with the record, “Bodies Meld Together” from Octo Octa on 100% Silk. It was one of those records that James instantly connected with; a record that perfectly embodies the collective energy rising up out of the queer underground scene in the rustbelt area right now. The rest of the mix floats around some deeper cuts on a variety of labels that have been putting out some awesome stuff in the past few years. The idea being new sounds from a familiar place. One of the more experienced members of New Delhi's all-femme collective Coven Code, the past year has seen Shireen gradually become a regular presence in the Delhi club circuit. It's an impressive feat, considering that she still holds down a full-time job as a senior consultant at a corporate firm, and more so because she manages to squeeze in practice sessions in most of her free time. Few of us have the time or mental bandwidth to pull that off, but not Shireen, who has been playing more and more gigs recently. Heavily influenced by the clubbing culture of the UK, Shireen's sets – just like Mix #168 – typically draw from various genres that fall under dance music, focusing primarily on house and techno, but reaching far and wide into UK garage, breakbeat, dubstep, and anything that falls under UK bass. It's easy to see these influences in Shireen's mix, which relies on tracks by stalwarts like Joy Orbison, Floating Points, Or:la, rRoxymore, Hunee, Octo Octa, Flava D and more to create an atmosphere that's part expressive, ambient and immersive, and part bangers. That's what makes it really suited for the dance floor – it draws you into a sensory experience, appealing to and enveloping both your mind and your body. One of my own mixes for episode #55 of the Meet the Locals Podcast. It's been forever since I've recorded a studio mix, and since I'm heading out on a road trip this weekend, I wanted some of my new stuff to listen to on the road. This all vinyl mix features mostly new cuts not available on digital from artists including Ada Kaleh, Traumer, Varhat, Janeret, Joey Anderson, Adam Strömstedt, Octo Octa, Lowris, Molly, Hostom, Dixia Sirong, The Black Pony Orchestra, Patrice Scott, The Funky Green Dogs from Outer Space and Terrence Parker, taking you on a two hour journey through a range of vibes. You may find some tracks challenging and inaccessible at first, but stick with it and you will be rewarded :) You can catch me with Katrina Mir and DJ Ramirez on the DC House Grooves show on DJ Jus-Ed's Underground Quality Radio, every two weeks on Saturday nights at 10pm. Check the UQ Radio page for the full schedule: http://bit.ly/UQSchedule.

tears in the club are allowed this week, as I explore a mix of emotionally driven house music. If you've ever felt lonely in the middle of a crowded dancefloor, or if you've ever heard a track, looked around for someone to dance with, and come up empty, this mix is for you. I've got some all-time faves from the likes of Joy Orbison and Deadboy, as well as brand new music from 100% Silk, Mall Grab, and Octo Octa.

On this week’s installment of Snacky Tunes, Darin Bresnitz takes over hosting duties as Greg explores France. Darin invites Lauren Cynamon and Chris Rosso of Vice’s VBS into the studio to talk about documentary filmmaking. Find out why Lauren and Chris focus on the subjects that they do, and why creative control leads to an authentic documentary. Hear about some of VBS’s food features, including “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Munchies”. Where are Lauren and Chris headed next in the name of food? Later, Octo Octa comes into the studio to talk about his love for house and techno. Find out more about Octo Octa’s new record, and the sweat and tears that went into its creation. Hear about Octo Octa’s recent stint at the Red Bull Music Academy, and his affinity for disco naps. Thanks to our sponsor, Tekserve. “Delis don’t sell dog bones and tampons. Delis sell food!” [11:05] — Chris Rosso on Snacky Tunes “The point is to make content that we’d want to watch ourselves, and not dumb it down to the lowest common denominator.” [13:00] — Lauren Cynamon on Snacky Tunes
