Sunshine + Love, Beats + Drugs   How did a sleepy island off the coast of Spain, metamorphose from an artistic, countercultural haven into the global epicentre of electronic dance music, lighting the touch paper that caused the explosion of club culture?   Alexis Petridis, chief music writer for The Guardian, and Dean Chalkley, one of the UK's leading photographers of British subculture (both seasoned ravers), witnessed this extraordinary rise from the underground at Mixmag, the clubbers' bible, and have documented the subsequent transformations.   Alexis takes us on a trip through the island's bohemian past and tells how its unique combination of natural beauty, 60s counterculture and 70s glamour set the scene for an extraordinary pop cultural explosion in the 80s and 90s that would resonate through the Western world.   The photographs in Dean's new book ‘Back in Ibiza 1998 - 2003' , taken in the heat of many magic moments, capture the golden age of happy, all-in-it-together, 24 hour party people, bacchanalian excess, and sunkissed beach life the island offered before the corporate monsters of superstar DJs, big brands and VIP lounges swallowed it whole.   For more on Dean Alexis on music Alexis on Club Culture   Images courtesy Dean Chalkley #BureauOfLostCulture, #IbizaClubCulture, #Rave, #BalearicBeats, #90sClubScene, #80sClubScene, #IbizaHistory, #AcidHouse #CultureUnderground, #Dancemusic,  #LostCultureFound,#mdma, #pasha, #nickyholloway, #superstardjs

Taiki Nulight, or Erka Chinbayer to his friends, has been DJing and Producing for many years in very different circles. Being influenced by UK Garage, House and Electronic Dance Music, he has created a trademark sound which is truly his own. With love across the board from key radio tastemakers, such as Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Mistajam at BBC Radio 1, Taiki Nulight is renowned for his unique melting pot of UK dancefloor influences; circling around Bass, Garage and House, but stamped with a sound that is instantly recognisable as his own. The past 24 months have seen Taiki collaborate with scene heavy weights such as My Nu Leng, AC Slater, Chris Lorenzo, Cause & Affect and Low Steppa to devastating effect. As one who is always on the road, Taiki has taken his trademark sound far and wide, having played across the globe. Just a handle full of highlights have been performances at BoomTown (UK), Electric Forrest (USA), Forbidden Wonderland (USA), Pacha (Ibiza) as well as tours in Australia, Japan and a continually busy diary across Europe playing at iconic clubs such as Fabric and Ministry of Sound. It was because I saw LISAS play the night before opening up at Paragon for a Boy Harsher DJ set and friend and guest of the show, Promiseland with Pictureplane in the basement. Reach Up Disco Wonderland - Nick Halkes and Andy Smith talk us through their amazing journey

Rave Room Podcast

Video version: https://youtu.be/fJWJgieaZN4 From hosting parties as kids on two home hifis in a small west country town to playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, schooldays best friends Nick Halkes and Andy Smith have enjoyed amazing careers both individually and together. Here they talk about remixing , touring and so much more as they prepare for the release of the third instalment of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation series on BBE that Andy compiles. As schooldays best friends Andy and Nick ran a mobile disco together and hunted for bargain 12 inch vinyl in their childhood home town of Portishead near Bristol. At this point they had no idea that Andy would supply beats and tour the world with Portishead before one of the top 100 djs in the world nor that Nick would go on to set up the XL and Positiva labels becoming one of the UK mst respected dance and electronic music industry executives. Reach Up launched more than five years ago at London basement venue The Waiting Rooms and soon after appeared at Carl Cox's night at Space, Ibiza where they played for three seasons on the bounce and then also began packing out their monthly London residency at Peckham's South London Soul Train (hosted at the legendary Bussey Building). Following the 2017 release of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation on the renowned BBE Records, Volume 2 was released in 2019. Andy and Nick's re-edits of two tracks on the 2017 Reach Up Disco Wonderland comp were just the start. Nick's collaboration with Full Intention, both to release original music on Midnight Riot and remix State of the Nation feat the Jungle Brothers, gained support from Purple Disco Machine, Dimitri from Paris and Roger Sanchez. From there a chart topping Nick Reach Up remix of Hideaway by De'lacey followed and a Nick Reach Up collab with Birdee and vocal legend Barbara Tucker that scored coveted daytime Radio One play in the UK whilst hitting top 3 on Traxsource. An invitation to remix Mel C took the Nick Reach Up sound into new territory whilst a rework of Body Work by Hot Streak also took off. Most recently Nick was approached to remix the Kylie single Magic taken from her album appropriately entitled ‘Disco' and in October 2020 had 4 remixes of his simultaneously in the Music Week Upfront Top 20. What does it sound like miked in the bathtub? Matt talked about being at Strongroom Studios, tape flying off the machine, why you need hardware synths, MDing for Björk and Ellie Goulding, how to record ambient music, and why real guitar pedals rock! Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Matt Robertson, a British-born, Canadian-based, 3x Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director. Matt has worked with Björk, Anohni, Arca, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Ellie Goulding as musical director and orchestrator / arranger.  He has released four albums under his own name to date, balancing ambient sound design alongside warm organic techno and ripples of delicate electronics. His albums ‘Forecast', ‘In Echelon' and ‘Entology', have been described as “symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that's cinematic in scale” (Mixmag), “magnificent…wild, electronic sound” (The Line Of Best Fit) and “Nils Frahm's modern classical meets Jon Hopkins' grainy techno” (MOJO). Growing up listening to a healthy mixture of Jean-Michel Jarre and Jimmy Smith, Matt graduated from the University of Surrey before working at recording studios in London learning how to fix, and later build, some of his own synths. Working with a collection of vintage, modern and DIY synths, and combining electronic music production with classical composition and cinematic soundscapes; artists, producers, and film composers alike seek his enveloping and distinct sound. His work with Anoushka Shankar awarded him 2 Grammy nominations, and he recently scored the films ‘The New Corporation – The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel', and' ‘Navalny'. An exploration of the much-derided English suburbs through rap music. There are many different Englands. From the much-romanticized rolling countryside, to the cosmopolitanism of the inner cities (embraced by some as progressive, multicultural enlightenment and derided by others as the playground of a self-righteous metropolitan elite), or the disparagingly named "left behind" communities which, post-Brexit, have so interested political parties and pundits, demographers and statisticians. But there is also an England no one cares about. The England of semi-detached houses and clean driveways for multiple cars devotedly washed on Sundays, of "twitching curtains" and Laura Ashley sofas; of cul-de-sacs to nowhere and exaggerated accents; of late night drives to petrol stations on A roads, fake IDs tested in Harvesters, and faded tracksuits and over-gelled hair in Toby Carverys; of questionable hash from a "mate of a mate" and two-litre bottles of White Lightning from Budgens consumed in a kids playground. Much derided. Unglamorous, ordinary; cultural vacuity and small "c" conservatism. A hodgepodge. An--apparently--middling, middle-of-the-road middle-England of middle-class middle-mindedness. Part poetry anthology, part academic study into placemaking, and part autoethnography, The England No One Cares About (Goldsmith Press, 2024) innovatively brings together academic discussions of the ethnographic potential of lyrics, scholastic representations of suburbia, and thematic analysis to explore how rap music can illuminate the experiences of young men growing up in suburbia. Are we partying like it's 1999? I mean what it was actually like in 99, not how Prince imagined it might be back in 1982.Millennium eve was supposed to be the best thing ever. I was beside myself with excitement for months beforehand, possibly years. But when push came to shove, my group of friends didn't even bother going to a rave and spent an underwhelming evening drinking warm champagne on Brighton Beach before attending a number of deeply boring house parties. The subsequent inquest carried out in the pages of Mixmag, DJ Mag, and the rest suggested that our experience wasn't unusual. Promoters lost unfathomable amounts of money that night and the overall impression was that an enormous bubble had prematurely burst with the least fanfare possible. The current landscape lacks a similar finishing line, but the bug-eyed faux enthusiasm and lip-smacking commercialism which seems to define everything in the dance scene right now definitely has a similar feel to the end of the 90s. But what, if anything, is going to let the air out this time? 1999 was also the time that our guest this week, Steve Bug, and some of the Superstition Records gang from Hamburg started Poker Flat Recordings, one of the labels that would define the minimal sound that emerged from the wreckage of Millennium Eve.Steve has been pretty outspoken in his interviews of the last few years on above topics, so of course I wanted to get him on the podcast to talk about it. This conversation dovetails nicely with last week's episode with Radio Slave, in which I noted that 'if something is shit, then you should say it's shit, and this [the current dance scene] is shit'.There is a reasonable degree of constructive comment in this episode though, as well as the doom. I think there is anyway! If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! FAUZIA is an artist of many moods. The UK talent moves from IDM to soul on her NTS Radio residency, while her club DJ sets reveal her love for '90s-style breaks, electro and bass-heavy sounds. In the studio, she explores her softer side through self-released homespun dub and ambient jungle. In recent years, she's gravitated towards live performances. Her gossamer vocals, one of her strongest suits, cuts through live instrumentation like a hummingbird in agile flight. In 2020, the London-based talent told Mixmag that she was done being categorised as a "dance music" artist—and so far, she's succeeded. While she incorporates clubby touchstones into her work, there's a deep level of cross-genre knowledge and blending at play. FAUZIA's RA podcast makes that clear. Free of any four-to-the-floor music, it moves from experimental jazz to orchestral melodies to R&B ballads for a thoughtful and introspective journey full of her own unreleased music that points towards her newer interest in composition. This is music to be felt, so let your guard down and let it wash over you. @FAUZIA Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/926

At Kraków's Unsound festival, the London-based ambassador of footwork and jungle opens up about recent musings about legacy and the art of letting go. Since her first Boiler Room set went viral (so viral, she claims, it broke her phone), SHERELLE's career has ascended with a rapidness that even she struggles to fully comprehend. Almost instantly, she went from working a day job at Mixmag to DJing major festivals around the world, where she spread the word of 160 BPM music. Today, the London artist has an NTS residency with long-time friend and partner Naina, has two EPs under her belt and is at the helm of two labels–Hoover Sound and Beautiful. This year, she planned to take her reputation as a producer to the next level with a debut album that was scheduled for release in 2023. But this summer, every musician's worst nightmare happened to SHERELLE . After a mugging in Europe, she lost every bit of her music—her DJ repertoire, her unreleased tracks and perhaps most devastatingly, her entire debut album. Discussing this at Kraków's Unsound festival, however, SHERELLE is chipper and refreshingly wise. In this intimate and hilarious conversation with RA's in-house critic, Kiana Mickles, she describes the incident as a launchpad for recent musings about the art of letting go, the importance of archiving and how she's approaching her debut album differently the second time around.

As a prolific multi-genre producer and engineer, his track alongside Andy Moor “One Thing About You” featuring Amy Kirkpatrick, reached #1 on Beatport and stayed in the top 10 for three weeks. Adding to Somna's Beatport success, “One Thing About You” won the 2015 award for the most streamed trance track on Beatport. 2015 and 2016 also saw multiple Somna releases reach the top 10 on Beatport, with tracks featuring the likes of Jennifer Rene & Michele C. To mark Lange Recordings' 200th release, Somna was invited to team up with Johnny Yono and Monoverse. The result was “Hijackers”, a triple threat labor of love which reached #3 on the Beatport charts. During these years, Somna also made two label debuts (Armada Captivating and Future Sound Of Egypt Excelsior) and joined the trance elite as he had the honor of mixing a 3 disc compilation alongside Andy Moor for AVA Recordings' 10 year anniversary. Coupled by a truly rare triple play on A State Of Trance (episode #791), 2016 was fantastic year for Somna. His success carried over into 2017 as Somna showed no signs of slowing down with the Canadian hitting 140,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and a yearly collected data showing a staggering 13.4 million plus minutes streamed for his music on the #1 streaming platform. 2018 was a powerhouse year for Somna with a new single on Armada's Captivating label, hitting the landmark 1 million streams for his single “Look Back” on Spotify and debut appearances in Jakarta (Indonesia), Oslo (Norway), Zurich (Switzerland) and Amsterdam (Netherlands). Somna's 2019 started on a high with a “Progressive Pick” winner on A State Of Trance and with “Razor”, signed to Armin Van Buuren's personal label Armind Recordings. 2019 also marked a debut on Gareth Emery's Garuda Recordings with two high energy singles as well as delivering remixes for Markus Schulz and Lange. Continuing upwards, Somna teamed up with HALIENE for “Secret” to critical acclaim, receiving triple plays on A State Of Trance and an official music video. On the performance front, Somna debuted in Mexico City as well as the prestigious Dreamstate festival main stage in Southern California where he treated fans to world exclusive sneak peeks of his forthcoming artist album. Closing the year with the landmark 300th release from AVA Recordings with his collaboration with Andy Moor, Somna cemented himself in the scene as one of the most exciting trance artists to emerge this decade. 2020 saw “Beside You” – Somna's debut artist album finally released on Black Hole Recordings' Magik Muzik imprint to critical acclaim. Capturing “album of the month” in Mixmag and topping the charts in a variety of countries, Somna painted a canvas of music that impacted fans from around the world. While the unfortunate events of the pandemic caused his album tour plans (USA, UK, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan) to get canceled, Somna took to new avenues to share his music. Finding his feet swiftly as a partner on the Twitch streaming platform, his channel has grown exponentially over 2020 with a dedicated community and fan base edging towards 10k followers. Combining his flair for humor, a catalog and production history spanning multiple genres, Somna's channel continues to innovate and connect fans to his music weekly. For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them. As a bassist in the band Moot back in early-'80s NYC, Bruce Tantum's formative years were spent soaking up club culture in such hallowed halls as Mudd Club, Pyramid and Danceteria. Later in the decade, his time spent in those downtown dance dens, and those that that followed, inspired him to get step into the DJ booth — and over the ensuing years, he's played at pretty much any club willing to have him, as well as at more dingy basement parties than he can remember. For over two decades, Bruce has served as a music journalist, toiling for Time Out NY (where he served as the longtime Clubs editor), Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy, XLR8R, Mixmag and more. He currently holds it down as North American editor of DJ Mag, while still heeding the call of the decks for the occasional night of record-spinning fun. We had the pleasure of interviewing Pocket over Zoom video! After much fanfare for his recent singles, the rising star of the electronic scene, Edinburgh-raised Pocket, recently released his debut Helix Records EP, ‘Love DIsc.'The EP features the single, “Evergreen (ft. kloe),” which is available to stream now. The track is built around a joyful and radiant house instrumental that balances perfectly with kloe's heartfelt lyrics and stunning vocal delivery.“‘Evergreen' was a song that I started with the idea that its simplicity is its strength. Lots of texture and all based around the piano part. KLOE and I had a chat about our lives and everything we were experiencing, and the song became a love letter to being with someone long distance. The unapologetic lyrics and feel is to me what makes it such a standout. In the climate of house music and dance music in the UK, it's very easy to hold yourself back from making something sweet and warm with the fear of not fitting the mold, and I'm happy with taking the chance to make that happen,” Pocket says.Diversity is the name of the game when it comes to Pocket's approach to music and the EP offers a kaleidoscope of ranges and styles. Emblematic of Pocket's fresh sound, “U (ft. BRONZE AVERY)” is the perfect combination of pop, house, and UK garage. Pocket's light and airy instrumental melds perfectly with BRONZE AVERY's powerful-yet-soothing vocals. Using curiously satisfying vocal chops, and minimal but intricate production, ‘Crying at Supermac's' shows off a sound reminiscent of classic Burial. Pocket's unique style pierces through the saturated scene, showcasing a unique and excitable new project for fans. It's been an incredible start to Pocket's career - he was named one of the top 25 artists to watch in 2022 by Mixmag (his song 'Heartbreak Engineering' was also named amongst ‘Best Tracks of the Year April 2022'); received playlist support from Flume, DJ Seinfeld, and Salute, released a remix for Charli XCX and performed alongside Porter Robinson and Fred Again and has been included in tastemaker playlists POLLEN and Altar. Pocket's recent release, ‘U (ft BRONZE AVERY), featured in Paper Magazine in addition to receiving support from a who's who of DJs including Armin Van Buuren, The Magician, Dillon Francis, Joris Voorn, Calvin Harris, MK, Icarus, Oliver Heldens, Martin Garrix, Kryder, Sam Divine, Don Diablo, Carl Craig, Gabriel & Dresden / Dave, and PS1, among others. We want to hear from you! Like most multi-genre music fans, London-based Ruby Savage approaches DJing through a wide-angle lens. Whether she's touring, playing her post-punk disco party, In Flames, or hosting her monthly show on NTS, the Amsterdam native opts for warm, bouncy tunes that traverse dub, jazz and '80s proto-house. As she once Mixmag, she isn't beat-matching but "heartbeat-matching." For her, a dance is a means to feeling the full spectrum of emotions in a healthy way. Years spent behind-the-scenes at influential institutions have added to her understanding of energy and flow. She's worked the counter at Honest Jon's Records, managed Theo Parrish's Sounds Signature label (plus created the Wildheart Recordings sister label) and Gilles Peterson's Brownswood imprint, in addition to helping the Worldwide FM don launch Arc Records. When she's not DJing, Savage is spearheading community initiatives like Don't Be A Creep, an educational platform about club safety, as well as Artist Recovery Club for creative growth among music-makers. For her RA podcast, the vinyl enthusiast crafted a house music odyssey through soul, disco and gospel-inflected cuts like "Glory" by Waajeed and Dames Brown. It's an uplifting excursion through joy, catharsis and self-affirmation, relayed straight from the heart. @kwasiba3000 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/895

Rebecca teamed up with our previous On Brand guest Joe Beliotti (known for his music work at Coca-Cola) in authoring the new book, How Music Grows Brands. “We wanted to create a field guide to address this issue and help brands.” “Music consumption has changed over the last 30 years,” Rebecca noted. “Gen Z consumes music in a very different way. But music is a big passion point. If you can get this right it will pay off in dividends.” What brand has made Rebecca smile recently? Though Rebecca hates being put on the spot, she delivered with a smile-worthy UK brand—Minor Figures oat milk. He was born in Northeast India, he's currently based in Brooklyn, he spent his formative years in New Zealand and Australia, and has lived in monasteries in Thailand, orphanages in South Africa, and washed out apartments in London." On his third album — helpfully titled Third — Jitwam focuses on nights in London and New York, specifically, while still infusing a lifetime of global influences into his rich tapestry of disco-funk. Today's Song of the Day is such a fast-paced dance delight, you can almost picture the Soul Train dancers doing one of their infamous line dances to it.  As he told Mixmag, "Being a diaspora kid, Third, for me, also has a lot of references to third culture. I'm trying to blur the lines between what we think of as different cultures, rhythms, and genres, and show that despite how different these genres are — or how different we are as people — we're all grounded in the same drumbeat really."
