I played for the 2nd time at Early Doors Club in Room 2 on 7th June. Danny and Richard asked me did I fancy it as they were starting a 2nd room for their 2nd Birthday party in April. The remit was pretty simple, play anything that's not in your face and played in the main room. Totally relished the opportunity and as you can see and will hear, the tracklist in this is quite eclectic and the 4 hour sets give me a chance to raid my music collection. This is just a 90+ minute compressed version of what I play. Give it a whirl and see what you think.Tracklist;Kool & The Gang v DJ Jazzy Jeff  & The Fresh Prince - Summertime Madness (Rhythm Scholar  & Karl G Solar Flare Mix)Covalent & Billy Cobham - One More Day To Live (Late Nite Tuff Guy Remix)Talk Talk & Mark Hollis  - Life's What You Make It (Fingerman  Edit)Röyksopp  ft Beki Mari - This Time This Place (Henry Saiz Downtempo Egodeath Version)Hal Incandenza ft Eloy - I Don't Wanna Leave This WorldJosh Wink - Higher State Of Consciousness (Album Version)Khen - Never Lose Your InnocenceAmy Winehouse - Stronger Than Me (Raw Artes Disco Funk Remix)Paul Simon - Diamonds (Todd Terje Remix)The Thief Of Time ft Bay Bryan - Imposter SyndromeCAMELPHAT - Cola (Kenneth Bager Remix)Greg Wilson - 2 Sides Of Sympathy (Edit)Richard Sen - No Sameness (Original Mix)Todd Terje - Strandbar (Disko Version)Tears For Fears - Shout (Javier Penna Remix)

Sasha's 30th Anniversary Re-Creation: Essential Selection & Cream Tour @Que Club, Birmingham 27th May 1995

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2025 100:04

Sasha 30th Anniversary Essential Mix @ Que Club. I lovingly recreated this mix to celebrate the 25th anniversary, it's now 30 years since that mix. With over 10,000 downloads on my soundcloud page - it was clearly a well loved mix.BackgroundIn 1995, BBC Radio 1 and Cream put together their 'Live' tour with amazing line ups and aired them 'live' for the first time on the radio for listeners. On the Saturday 27th May, The ‘Grande Finale' of the tour was at the legendary ‘Que Club' in Birmingham and boasted a line up that featured the biggest Dj's in the UK at that time. An all-night affair at a club that could hold thousands from 10pm-6am was a first of it's kind and for the first time you could sit at home listening to the music and madness erupting. After Sasha & John Digweed's 1994 Renaissance album had converted and gained so many more fans to the duos epic brand of House Music, 1995 was to take it to the next level. The advancements in the sound they started playing was to be an insight into the future of electronic music. Progressive House suddenly had a harder edge and pushed the boundaries of sound using technology far away from the traditional House music sound with piano and soulful vocals. The reason I have chosen to commemorate this mix is that it changed my outlook on House music. I have always enjoyed all genres of music but back then we didn't have the amounts of genres and sub-genres enjoyed now. I knew I was hearing something very different.I recorded the whole broadcast from start to finish, swapping 90 min tapes in and out, barely containing my excitement for what I was hearing and capturing. The crowd noises, Tong's voice bellowing out over the roar of the crowd announcing the DJ's – it was just amazing, literally AMAZING.Out of all the mixes, it was, of course, Sasha's that caught my attention and engaged me more than all the other mixes. Having already seen him play this was the nucleus for a brand new Sasha obsession. To celebrate 25 years since Sasha played the mix live on air that Saturday evening (I still have the original tape, see pic) I'm going to play all the tracks he played* and hope to give us all the sense of nostalgia and wonderment I felt that night. Most of the tracks are recordings from my vinyl collection before I sold it all to a collector back in 2014.The mix itself is only around 80 mins so I'll play some extra tracks from his other sets around the same time. For myself, 1995 was my favourite year of clubbing ever. The music, the DJ's the energy at that time was explosive. Join me and let's take the journey back together.TRACKLIST 27.05.1995: RADIO 1 ESSENTIAL MIX. Lost In was originally a series of mixes I produced after travelling to different places in the world. The mixes were to reflect the influences, feeling or emotions I felt whilst in a particular country. Lost in then became a weekly session during lockdown where I played marathon sets to help our collect mental health and become one through music. I'm bringing the original spirit back with Lost In Peru. Peru revealed itself in layers—modern, ancient, wild, sacred. Each place felt like a different country entirely, and yet the warmth and pride of the Peruvian people carried through it all. Despite the language barrier, we were helped, welcomed, and looked after at every turn. From misty mountains and ancient ruins to the tangled, living walls of the Amazon and the sprawling capital city—this trip was a true adventure. It stretched us, surprised us, and left us with stories we'll be telling for a long time.Peru, has a piece of my heart and this is the progressive daily meditation I listened to whilst in the mountains and amazon rainforest.Hope you enjoy.

Sasha's closing set at Space Ibiza in 2016 is remembered as a historic moment in dance music history. As the iconic club prepared to close its doors after 27 years, Sasha delivered a performance that encapsulated the spirit and energy of Space. One of the standout moments from this set was his inclusion of "Body Shine" by Billy Hendrix. Originally released in 1997, "Body Shine" is a track that combines soulful vocals with a driving house beat, making it a classic in the genre. Sasha's decision to play this track was both a nod to the past and a testament to its enduring appeal. While specific reviews detailing this particular set are scarce, the significance of Sasha's performance at Space Ibiza's closing cannot be overstated. His set was a journey through house music's rich history, blending timeless classics with contemporary tracks, and "Body Shine" was a perfect example of this blend. For those interested in experiencing the atmosphere of Space Ibiza during its final season, the International Music Summit (IMS) produced a documentary titled "Space Ibiza: End of An Era," which provides insights into the club's legacy and its final moments. Although it doesn't focus solely on Sasha's set, it captures the essence of what made Space Ibiza a legendary venue. For me incorporating "Body Shine" into his set was a testament to Sasha's deep connection to house music's roots and his ability to evoke nostalgia while keeping the dance floor moving. This choice resonated with the crowd, making it a memorable highlight of the night, hope you enjoyed it too!DJ

The literal translation of his Arabic name, Handsome Tiger is the moniker of Vancouver-based producer and DJ Hussein Elnamer. Hussein got his start in metal bands, found dubstep and is currently fusing the genres big low-end and 140 tempos with global club and bass rhythms in an effort to “decolozine the dancfloor.” Hussein talks about growing up mixed-race in Canada – his father is from Libya and his mother is Anishinaabe Métis – and how he's fusing indigenous sounds of pow-wow drums, chants and more into underground bass. We also talk about his artist journey, the Canadian festival circuit, the importance of dance and ritual rhythms and how connecting with his ethnic background has shaped his sound. Taped live at Bass Coast Festival in Merritt BC! Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or Instagram @ravetothe.grave.

We're headed to Perth, Western Australia to catch up with Paul Harding aka El Hornet, one-third of drum 'n' bass group Pendulum, who have reached huge heights with their hard-driving neurofunk bangers that lay bare the group's background in heavy metal and hard rock. Paul is a hilarious storyteller and we talk about CB radio, surfing with sharks, trading beer for mixtapes, losing a dead person at a Pendulum show, being broke in DJ Fresh's London flat making Pendulum's first album and keeping drum 'n' bass punk af. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or follow us on Instagram @ravetothe.grave.
