Forensic Musicologist Dr. Joe Bennett is joining us today to discuss whether Taylor Swift copied other artists for different songs off her latest album 'The Life of a Showgirl'. From discussing copying The Jonas Brothers, Jackson 5, The Pixies, and more, Dr. Joe Bennett breaks down the songs in question and explains how the songs are the same and how they are different from one another. He also teaches us what to look out for when listening to similar songs to know whether or not an artist would owe another artist credit. Plus he explains the difference between interpolation, sampling, and crediting other artists, which leads us into discussing the differences we have on songs like "The Life of A Showgirl" and what happened with Olivia Rodrigo's "Deja Vu" and "Cruel Summer". This is one episode you will not want to miss!Dr. Joe Bennett:Dr Joe Bennett is a musicologist, writer, BBC broadcaster, and researcher specialising in popular music and songwriting. As a professor at Berklee College of Music, he teaches artist development, songwriting, music copyright, and song analysis. Ep 203: “Money Deja Vu: How to Stop Repeating Financial Mistakes”
Series: Deja VuSpeaker: Galen Huck11/23/25
The strange experience of deja vu sometimes lasts just a matter of milliseconds. Nonetheless it can still catch you off guard and be pretty unsettling. Deja vu means “already seen” in French. It refers to the sense of having already seen or experienced something you're confronted with, even though you know that you have never actually seen it before. For example, you visit a new city for the first time in your life, but at a precise moment you get the feeling like you've walked down a certain street in the past. According to Psychology Today, it occurs in 60 - 70% of people from time to time, while research suggests more than 97% of us have experienced it at least once in our lives. Has it always existed? Have scientific studies been able to shed any light on it? Can deja vu be dangerous? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Don and Tom open with an honest reflection on market déjà vu—how today's investing climate echoes the speculative excesses of 1929 and 2008. Citing Andrew Ross Sorkin's new book 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History, they discuss the modern “financialization” wave: private equity, venture capital, crypto, and private credit being repackaged for retail investors and even 401(k)s, often under looser regulation. They warn listeners about “mark to make-believe” valuations and Wall Street's relentless drive to sell complexity to the masses. The conversation moves from cautionary history (leveraged trusts of 1929, margin loans, and subprime mortgages) to present-day parallels like Bitcoin ETFs and private-market tokens. The takeaway: avoid opaque, speculative products; stick with transparent, low-cost diversification. In the Q&A, they answer listener questions about simplifying global portfolios with VT vs. VTI/VXUS, and about selling or donating concentrated stock positions from employee plans. 0:04 Opening disclaimers and acknowledgment that the episode isn't meant to scare investors 1:18 Historical parallels—1929, 1987, 2008—and the feeling of “market déjà vu” 2:10 Introducing Andrew Ross Sorkin's new book 1929 and his NYT column on modern speculation 3:20 Financialization and the loosening of investor protections in the 2020s 4:33 Wall Street's constant invention of confusing products that favor sellers 4:58 Robinhood's Vlad Tenev and the illusion of democratizing risk 6:12 Lowering the barriers to private markets and what that means for investors 7:26 Echoes of 1929: leveraged ETFs, margin-like structures, and “Russian-doll” debt 8:29 The perils of leverage and speed of modern market declines 9:02 Private-market tokens and the “mark-to-make-believe” problem 10:25 Overvaluation, lack of liquidity, and Wall Street's interest in 401(k) assets 11:41 Historical leverage shifts—from banks to private credit 12:58 Why trusting financial “authorities” can be dangerous 13:32 Emotional honesty: people lie, and investors must self-protect 14:42 Jealousy, lottery-thinking, and envy as behavioral pitfalls 15:36 Investing as elimination—avoid what's complex, costly, or confusing 16:48 Listener Q&A: two-fund simplicity (VT + BND) vs. multi-ETF tinkering 18:38 The temptation to overweight U.S. equities 20:00 Contrarian case for international exposure (VXUS) 21:15 ESPP stock cleanup: when to sell concentrated holdings 22:44 Charitable giving of appreciated stock for tax efficiency Learn more about your ad choices. Apologies upfront for this pod. Very cathartic, but also self indulgent and ranty. After five consecutive league defeats to start the PREM season (the worst start to a season in the Clubs history), rather than chat through the positives and the two defeats to Bristol and Exeter, we have decided to lay out our frustrations with the current coaching set-up and call for their removal. After 5 years at the helm, George Skivington has presided over the worst Win/Loss ratio of any DoR/Head Coach in the Professional Era; our worst league position (three times); failed to reach the playoffs - the only coach and club other than Newcastle to fail to do so while he has been at the club. We have seen the worst consecutive run of defeats, our worst Points Against tally, the biggest defeats to Bath, Bristol, Northampton and the overall record defeat by any club in the PREM. From our point of view (a view increasingly shared by many other supporters) both George Skivington and Dominic Waldouck's time at the club needs to end. We discuss the alternative names, as requested by several listeners, plus the excuses and reasons why others are still sticking by the Management. Happily we have a nice palate cleanser to end the pod this week as we do review the fantastic opening day bonus point win for Glos-Hartpury against a much fancied Saracens Women. BT & Sal lay into the Giants after their latest loss to the Eagles, leaving them at a disastrous 2-6 record for the third straight year under Brian Daboll. Despite the excitement around rookie QB Jaxson Dart, the hosts argue the same pattern of losing, poor defense, and inexcusable game management (like coughing up the Cowboys and Broncos games) proves the regime is failing. They call out the top-ten payroll and high-priced defensive stars for their inability to stop the run (giving up 276 yards!), slam Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen, and debate whether Daboll's job is safe even with Dart's promise, asking: "Why is their record the same that it's been for the last nine seasons?"
On this episode, we talk about how all of Ruben's teams lost this past weekend, and then we talked about bouts of Deja Vu, and they way that men communicate, without saying a word.

Lionel dissects the "political psychosis of overanalysis," where political junkies and pundits persist in compulsive rumination, turning simple arithmetic questions into a confused, overanalyzed "mental labyrinth".Plus, Lionel examine the massive federal sting operation targeting fraud, illegal gambling, and card-counting schemes with alleged ties to organized crime. Lionel questions the official narrative and the "triage" of law enforcement priorities: Why focus on Vinnie Bananas card counting and x-ray poker tables when far greater crimes—like massive COVID-era fraud, human trafficking, fentanyl deaths, and the corruption of the current administration (which he argues is more "gangster" than the best of the old-school Mafia)—are ignored?
