In this episode I'm talking to Veronika Paluch, mom of two and owner of Veronika Paluch Photography. Veronika is based in the western Philadelphia suburbs and focuses on portraits of expecting mothers, newborns, and young families. She spent time in several other fields before settling into her creative passion as a photographer, and both her work and personal life are incredibly influenced by her experiences as a mother. Today, she offers full-studio photography, including wardrobe and hair and makeup for moms and their families. We chatted about everything from career changes, to postpartum confidence, to the way we speak to our children- Veronika was so kind and genuine and will feel like an old friend to all listeners. Enjoy! You can check out Veronika online @veronikapaluch on Instagram or veronikapaluch.com. Veronika also mentioned Leah Davey of Main Line Ma, children's costumes from Snickerdoos Kids, florist Heritage Gatherings, makeup artist Gina Gagliano, and interior designer Riverwards General.

A relatively quiet few weeks of news means a compact and bijou episode, but Al and Paul still find time to talk about Amazon's postponed assimilation of Comixology, Gina Gagliano leaving Random House Graphic, the launch of Zestworld, Oni signing with Lunar for distribution and Marvel's announcement of Secret X-Men, as well as reviewing King of Spies and Justice League Dark Annual. Last Christmas, I gave you the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and the very next day, you returned it for store credit.

My Boyfriend is a Bear is out now and really fun!! Spectacle by Megan Rose Gedris is out in 2 weeks and we’re having a circus-themed release party for it! Free Comic Book Day 2018 is over, so of course we’re working on Free Comic Book Day 2019. Ideas come out organically in this very discussion. Contest of Challengers has a new logo… borrowed from a current DC comic. DC is starting to offer incentive variants and we’re not really on board with this plan. More and more people are wanting just the DC variant covers each week. We’ve had more people ask for this week’s Suicide Squad variant than we can sell of issues off the shelf. How does that even happen? Young Animal is ending in August. We’ve heard rumors of a few new DC titles and creative team changes. Bud Plant will no longer exhibit at San Diego, after 48 years. Random House is starting their own all-ages graphic novel imprint, and our friend Gina Gagliano is heading it! This is amazing news for the comics industry! John Barber is the new Editor-In-Chief of IDW Publishing. Black Badge is the new BOOM! Studios comic from Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins. Thing black op boy and girl scouts. There is a “Men in Comics” panel at TCAF this weekend and it sounds wonderfully hilarious.

On this episode of The Comics Alternative Interview, Derek and Andy W. talk with Ben Hadke, creator of the Zita the Spacegirl series. Of course they discuss Ben's signature works -- Zita the Spacegirl, Legends of Zita the Spacegirl, and The Return of Zita the Spacegirl (the latter of which was just published by First Second) -- but they also delve into some of his other work, including his upcoming picture book, Julia's House for Lost Creatures (also from First Second). Along the way they discuss the wellspring of Ben's sketchbooking, the origins of Zita, the close links between Ben's art and his family, the appeal of all-age comics, the artist's schedule and philosophy as a speaker, and the many wild and fantastical creatures that populate his books. (Ben, Andy, and Derek also give a shout out to Gina Gagliano at First Second for her unparalleled work as a publicist and for being an all around good person!) The guys have a great time talking with Ben, and in doing so they're able to tap into the excitement and passion that bring life to all of the Zita books.
