Happy Memorial Day weekend! If you've got a 3-Day Weekend, we've got a trilogy that will fit the bill for you. Make a plate and join us for a great weekend of movie trilogies. Guardians of the GalaxyThis hilarious trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has something for everyone. Comedy, action, great stunts and effects, and a killer soundtrack for every single film. This film trilogy is a conga line of straight bangers, just like each soundtrack. Guardians of the Galaxy 1, 2, and 3 will split your sides and make you tear up with their found-family motif. It's truly a film trilogy that everyone can enjoy. The Lord of the RingsPeter Jackson's multi-award-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an epic cinematic masterpiece. With a cast of Oscar winners, a gorgeous score from Howard Shore, incredible cinematography, and groundbreaking practical and CGI special effects, these films are hard to beat. Plus, they're about as long as your long weekend, so no need to do anything other than get up to change the disc and get more snacks! We've got both the theatrical cuts and extended editions of each film, so pick your preference!John Carpenter's Apocalypse TrilogyIf you want something a little different in terms of trilogies, how about a trilogy of three separate films that don't share a story, but instead a theme? That's exactly what director and composer John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy is. This trilogy comprises John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), Prince of Darkness (1987), and In the Mouth of Madness (1995). They're considered the Apocalypse Trilogy because the protagonists of these films don't stop the Apocalypse, but are rather meant to bear witness to the world's end. Flack covers John Carpenter's The Thing in greater detail in his “Halloween Spirit!” episode, and Pitfall Gary has a great treatment of Prince of Darkness in his “John Carpenter, Master of Horror,” episode. I spend more time focusing on In the Mouth of Madness, which takes much inspiration from the works of H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. Check out this trilogy of terror on the John Carpenter shelf in our horror section.Star WarsIt's hard not to think of trilogies and not have Star Wars come immediately to mind, especially since it's a trilogy of trilogies within itself! Today, I focused on the original trilogy, as that's the one that everyone seems to agree on. Star Wars forever changed the game for science fiction films, and really, the entire film landscape. Not just with its special effects, but with its merchandising. Those effects are felt to this day, and for that reason, make it a great way to spend a long weekend. Thanks for joining us here at the Video Store Podcast for your 3-Day weekend. We hope you have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Some trilogies hook us immediately with an amazing first book, expand the world and raise the stakes in book two… and then everything depends on the finale. Stick the landing and readers close the book with that perfect “ahhh, yes!” feeling. Miss the landing and suddenly the entire trilogy feels a little shaky. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim takes a look at speculative fiction trilogies where the final book felt like a letdown for many readers, alongside trilogies that absolutely nailed the ending and delivered the payoff fans were hoping for. From legendary classics to modern sci-fi and fantasy, we're talking about the importance of satisfying conclusions, why some finales divide readers, and which trilogies truly land the plane. And of course, Jim wants to hear from you! HT2309 - A Nagging Sense of Guilt It's been over a year since my last publication of a new issue of Kokoro. I feel a sense of guilt about this. In that same time, I've release 400 Here's a Thought, 60 podcasts, 60 episodes of Finding the Picture, 5 issues of LensWork, and that doesn't count episodes of Looking at Images, Seeing in SIXES commentaries, or Trilogies commentaries. So why this nagging sense of guilt? The pressure to produce takes many forms. Show your appreciation for our free weekly Podcast and our free daily Here's a Thought… with a donation Thanks!

LensWork - Photography and the Creative Process

HT2251 - Framed Trilogies In 2022, we published a book titled Trilogies. Each of these trilogies consisted of three images the photographers used to illustrate a story, an expanded view of a subject, or a guided and deeper involvement with a scene. In the book, these three images were presented on facing pages. As a layout, this got me thinking about printing three images on a single sheet of paper and matting and framing them as a sort of triptych. “Trilogies are all about going back to the beginning and discovering something that wasn't true from the get-go. Godfather, Jedi, all revealed something we thought was true that wasn't true.” We watched “Scream 3” with our friend, author Wesley Thomas, and we've all been seriously considering getting bangs. Our friends from Woodsboro are back, and yet again, someone is trying to un-alive everyone in Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) orbit. Yes, Sid is living way off in the canyons answering a help line and dipping her own candles or whatever, but there's a NEW fiend in the Ghostface mask, and this time they have a comically oversized voice-changing device! In a meta turn (in an already mega-meta franchise), we are on the set of Stab 3, and the cast are being taken out one by one. We get a stellar camp performance from Parker Posey, pre-Dr. McDreamy Patrick Dempsey, and the debut of the hairstyle that launched 1000 memes— the Gale Weathers iconic “Scream 3” bangs. In the words of mega stylist Law Roach… “Horror Queen.” Thanks for listening all season and we'll be back with fresh episodes before you know it! HT2102 - The Multi-exposure Image For some time now I've been an advocate of the multi-image presentation like Seeing in SIXES, or Trilogies. A variation on that idea has just as much potential and that is the multi-exposure image. Most digital cameras these days have the ability to do multiple exposure capture, but I hardly ever see anybody use this aesthetic. I wonder why?
