It's not the biggest of weeks for comics news, but Paul and Al have their fun regardless, as they talk you through the new UK comics industry trade body, the end of Immortal Thor, Werewolf By Night: Blood Moon Rise, the upcoming The Shredder series, Archie's crossovers with Minor Threats and Jay & Silent Bob and Hellboy and the BPRD: Professor Harvey is Gone, as well as reviewing Amazing Spider-Man and Fire and Ice: When Hell Freezes Over. Meanwhile, the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe has eaten the fresh-baked cherry pie right off Mrs Witherspoon's window ledge, that rascal.
I'm back to a live schedule and happy to be talking about a fantastic new book that was Kickstarted last year, the After Action Report: Command Files! Crafted by Greg Agustin, with production by Josh Eggebeen and Roger Taft, this "Official Handbook" style file card compendium collects almost 50 years of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero character work into unified dossiers. It's really an amazing piece of work and I want you all to visit AfterActionReport.net and get a copy! Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. On this week's episode we are joined by Chad Anderson of the x-cellent x-podcast Graymalkin Lane. Chad offers up his encyclopedic knowledge as we dive into the 1960s, looking at when the mutant metaphor began and when Beast started really hating humans. We dive into Chad's birth month and year issue - Uncanny X-Men 115 - where we get his full breakdown of Sauron (and a great voice for him too). Also in this issue: Banshee has never looked hotter Also, no one knows who you are Banshee stop asking Lodro is going to hatch a rom com situation to make Ann Nocenti his cool aunt Wolverines can run really fast There sure is a lot of Cyclops blasting all over Wolverine's face in this issue Also, Cyclops and Banshee tag team Sauron Colossus has a son we will never speak of - Sauron is bad at break ups Zaladane dresses like a chicken drag queen Ka Zar keeps butting in to tell people he also has adventures All this plus why Boom Boom would be a great president! Boom Boom 2028! She has my vote. What does any of this mean for Chad's future (and - BONUS - our society's)? Tune in to find out! Chad Anderson is the host of the wonderful x-podcast Graymalkin Lane where he and his queer friends review the X-Men comics of the 1960s. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Chad is a father of two, works as a trauma therapist and a writer. He's written the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, the Mushroom Murders graphic novel, the documentary Dog Valley, and his memoir Gay Mormon Dad is currently being adapted into a graphic novel! More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) Another episode, another convention to bring you all the news from! This time round, Paul and Al are talking about the return of Vertigo (with a detour into the state of Marvel's Red Band), the launch of the Marvel Premiere Collection, Hush 2, Absolute Flash, Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern, Rise of Emperor Doom, IDW's new logo and IDW Dark line, Andy Khouri becoming TMNT editor, and a multitude of Godzilla series, along with reviews of Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu and Batman & Robin Year One. If I had the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, I'd Handbook in the morning.

There's a bunch of news out of San Diego Comic Con, and you can hear what Al and Paul think about it all here! And now! If you like! They're chatting about Black Canary: Best of the Best, The Question: All Along The Watchtower, Batgirl, New Gods, JSA, Hellverine, West Coast Avengers, Laura Kinney: The Wolverine, Psylocke and Lower Decks, plus the announcement of Amazing Comics, and they've got reviews of S.I.R. and Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special. The Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe? Splendid chaps, all of them.
Insert the commencement music and put on the silly hats, and do not forget that you will be paying for this school forever. Welcome to the final issue of Avengers Academy. There are many things we can discuss with the ending of this series. There are many silly tangents I could probably go on. The problem is that I cannot find a really appropriate or seamless segway. And so, I guess, I will need to talk about this book and what it means to me.....which is boring. Let's just get the whole teenage hormone love thing out of the way. This was a series that dealt with teenagers, so you knew there was going to be romance and broken hearts. The interesting thing is that it was done pretty well. It was nice to see these relationships treated with some respect. What about the fighting and action in these books. Come on, this is Marvel Comics, of course the action is going to be good. Yes, this book did bring in one of the many Wolverines that roam the Marvel Universe, but it is the best Wolverine, so there is that. But I digress, this was a very action-packed series that still managed to keep the story moving forward. I was a little disappointed that we did not see more cool gadgets. Hank Pym is a main player in this book, but the tech was small....get it...and that was sad. But I guess that means that we just focused on the people not the things. So, I am ok with that. The art work of this series was solid. There was nothing extraordinary or groundbreaking, but there was nothing that was awful, and that is just fine. Comic books can be artistic masterpieces, but they can also be enjoyable mediums to convey stories. This book had a good story tied with clean art, and we cannot ask for more than that. Going back to the teenage story of it all, I think we can say that focusing on the issues of kids during a rough time of their lives allows the creators to touch on some good topics. Bullying is definitely an area that was addressed, and dealt with well. I mean, who does not want to see bullies get owned. This is a thoughtful series that really develops its cast of characters well. There was a good storyline to follow and you ended up really carrying about the cast. I think that the introduction of new members helped keep things fresh, especially Julie because it put it on our radar. I am sad that we need to leave this series. It was fun and interesting, and I wanted to read each issue. I know why we have to leave the series, but I am sad that most of these characters have disappeared into the lost pages of the Official Handbook. Paul and Al have a full basket of comics news and they're dispensing it left, right and centre, as they remember Don Perlin and Peter B. Gillis, look at Jeff Lemire's Minor Arcana, the finales of Jupiter's Legacy and Marvel's Star Wars, and the new Blade: Red Band mini, chat through the ends of Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr's run on Amazing Spider-Man and Joshua Williamson's runs on Green Arrow and Batman and Robin, and draw your attention to the Wicked & the Divine's covers collection Kickstarter, on top of all of which they've got reviews of Destro and Self-Help. That was all one sentence. The Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe has taken a red pen to it.
Al and Paul are back (back! Back!) with remembrances of Trina Robbins and Mark "Doc" Bright, a whiz through the first six post-Krakoa X-books and a mini-explainer of Misty and the new Gail Simone-run iteration thereof, as well as reviews of Action Comics and Uncanny Valley. The Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe can't believe it's not butter either.

*Emotional episode warning* This week's episode was challenging for me to record and edit, so I apologize for the delay in posting this episode. Many of us struggle with experiencing grief on a very regular basis. Some of us know someone, or maybe its ourselves, who allows themselves to be so consumed by constant raw grief that it consumes them and their choices, especially when it comes to health. My grief, as you'll hear, has become a strong reason why. I own it now as my own superpower, and you can do it too. Looking for fasting support on your journey? I can help! Despite what others have told me and putting me on a pedestal in the fasting community, and despite my massive (over) 200-pound weight loss, I do not see myself as anyone special. Al and Paul have a whirlwind recap of news from NYCC for your enjoyment, as they look at the "faux-simile" Batman 428; John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America; the Superman Superstars initiative; the formation of Ghost Machine; Avengers: Twilight; the Blood Hunt crossover; the creative teams of the new Ultimate line; and the end of the Krakoan era, as well as taking the time to remember Keith Giffen and to review Batman: City of Madness and Midlife (How to Hero at Fifty). The Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe is coming, and everybody's jumping, New York to San Francisco, an intercity disco.
Never in my entire 2 year weight loss journey, or my current maintenance lifestyle, have I EVER counted calories. INTERVIEW: A master of his craft, Josef "Joe" Rubinstein has inked more pages and over more pencillers than perhaps anyone else in the business. He started early, inking the first pencilling assignment of his friend (and past guest) Mike Nasser at age 17. Joe was mentored by Dick Giordano in and out of Continuity Associates and maintained a working relationship with him the rest of his life. Among his extensive credits, he's known for inking the first Wolverine limited series (Claremont/Miller) and most, if not all, of the entries in The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Chances are, if you've read comics in the last 40 years, you've read a book Joe's inked! You can follow Joe on Instagram @josefrubinstein. _____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Yes, you read that right, I do not own a microwave. You may also be wondering how the heck that relates to anything fasting? This weeks episode challenges you to think about your need for quick fixes, solutions, and shortcuts... just like using a microwave to heat your dinner. Looking for fasting support on your journey? I can help! Consults, Blog, & Official Handbook now available! TheFastingFocusedLifestyle.com
This week's episode will challenge you, again, to look within yourself to evaluate where your headspace is at on your journey. Breaking away from social norms with weight loss attempts can be challenging when all we are ever told is to seek externally when wanting to fix our weight. Fasting, as a lifestyle tool, challenges and rebukes all those norms and can help you to realize you have more power within you to succeed than you may have initially thought. I am telling you, go get your after! I believe in you, even if you don't! Do you need fasting support on your journey? I can help! Consults, Blog, & Official Handbook now available! Paul and Al are back once again, and this time round they're wishing Jeff Smith well in his recovery from cardiac arrest, and gabbing about Tom Brevoot's intra-Marvel move, the upcoming Sentry, Speed Force and Spider-Man: Reign 2 series, and the strange case of the possibly disappearing IDW Originals line, as well as reviewing Uncanny Avengers and The Cull. Plus the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: it's a bit of an animal.
This week's episode is a celebration (for myself) of reaching now 5 years of fasting, every single day, in some form! I recorded this episode on Aug. 9th, 2023, my official 5-year anniversary of fasting. While I have achieved shedding (not losing, because I don't want to find them) 203.8lbs with this lifestyle, the biggest and most meaningful takeaway isn't my incredible lack of loose skin, it's my mindset and relationship with food. ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. This episode includes Blue Devil #19 & Summer Fun Annual #1, Dreadstar and Company #6, G.I. Listen to an edited interview with Cat wherever you get your podcasts. To quote the Bard, it's been a long road, getting from there to here, but Paul and Al have made it to episode 200 of House to Astonish, and they're indulging in their traditional vices of cake and fizz, and talking about Vault Comics' Headshell line, Titan's new Conan series, Joe Kelly and Kim Niimura's Immortal Sergeant, and Ty Templeton's cancer-free all-clear. They're also reviewing a bunch of comics on a theme, as they look at Batman #200, House of Mystery #200, Amazing Spider-Man #200, and, er, Deadpool #58? And as always, the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe is ringing in the new. (As this episode was recorded on Sunday evening, the news hadn't yet broken of the incredibly sad loss of Kevin O'Neill, an absolute giant of British comics, but there will be more to say about him on a future episode.)
Al and Paul are back, and they're remembering George Pérez, Neal Adams, Tim Sale, Kazuki Takahashi and Pat McCallum, as well as talking about Oni-Lion Forge and Comixology's recent personnel shifts, the upcoming Tim Drake: Robin series from DC, Marvel's newest Spider-Man ongoing, the return (again) of Miracleman, the just-announced Wakanda miniseries and Ryan North and Erica Henderson's Danger and Other Unknown Risks, and reviewing Starhenge and Batman. The Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been - lives in a dream.
Spider-Girl gets ready to enter new territory – A LINE-WIDE CROSSOVER! As May Day and her title continue to close out older stories (the fight with Davida) and advance new ones (Black Tarantula), long forgotten faces and faves return. The Fantastic Four, Five, & Kids all show up to bring slam the heat and keep it loose (0:00:00). Then, the guys dive in on the MC2's Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe entry in the Alternate Universes edition (1:14:00) which was released right around…(1:26:15) LAST HERO STANDING! After hyping the miniseries event since the first episode of MC2 coverage, we finally arrive at a truly incredible moment for the fledging can-do-it universe. The event gives rise to heroes who have long deserved the spotlight (Wild Thing) and a fond farewell (AS WELL AS A WACKY AF ONE) to heroes we know and love from the MC1 proper. All this and more from the new format of XI4P – we hope you survive the experience!
We're happy to welcome Karl Kesel (@karlkesel) back for his annual visit to discuss the latest Impossible Jones kickstarter. At the time of recording, there were two days left in the Impossible Jones / Polecat Kickstarter, which has been trying to reach its latest stretch goals in the final days. Karl tells about new character Polecat, what he has in common with last issue's guest star Captain Lightning and some of the other new friends and foes in this issue. We also talk about the Even Steven back-ups this time around, with new origin stories being written by Alex Segura and Gail Simone. Karl also updates on us the state of the latest Section Zero project, on which he and Tom Grummett are still working. If you listen before the deadline, you can still pledge at impossiblekickstarter.com. We also talk about some of Karl's older work, starting with Final Night, the 1998 DC mini-series he created with Stuart Immonen, the Amalgam and Unlimited Access books and some of the projects he worked on with the late George Perez, including the great History of the DC Universe, written by Marv Wolfman, drawn by George and inked by Karl. We also discuss, in a wonderfully nerdy way, the differences between DC's Who Who and the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Parish Notice: By the time you listen to this, we might have a new podcast officially launched over at the When It Was Cool Network. If you're a long-time listener of the pod, the subject of this new project will not be a surprise. Be on the lookout on social media when it actually debuts.
Today, Karl from WhenItWasCool.com takes a look at the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Omnibus which collects the original run of the same series. This was the official character bible of Marvel Comics in the 1980s and would later be updated with a deluxe edition and other series. This was THE series that every kid in the 1980s had to have!
Paul and Al are back, with more news and reviews and the usual nonsense. They've got chat about Archie Comics' NFT shenanigans, IDW's Originals line, DC's Pride special's lineup, the new Batman and Detective Comics creative teams, Superman: The Space Age, X-Terminators, All-Out Avengers, the relaunch of Shang-Chi and Grant Morrison's debut novel Luda, as well as reviews of The Wrong Earth: Fame and Fortune and Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country. Does the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe love you, now that you can dance?
The tradition after every second issue: We revisit issues 7 and 8 of the Official Handbook and look at what happened to some of those characters after 1985. Especially fashion-wise. Which are still Hot, which are still Not, and which have been redeemed or condemned? Pour yourself a tall one and join us, won't you?
