The Beat's Heidi MacDonald returns to the show to chat about a particularly wild time in the comic industry. MacDonald discusses the insanity of this moment, staying on top of everything, the Diamond Comic Distributors bankruptcy mess (note: This was recorded before the final decision of who won was in), the varying players, why Diamond may have favored Universal/Ad Populum, whether it matters who won, the importance of institutional knowledge, the infamous podcast appearance of Alliance's head, how the direct market responded to the bankruptcy, tariff concerns, actual and perceived impacts, the current state of the direct market, the ComicsPRO experience, what helps her in tough times, and more.
It's our BIG Best of 2024 podcast! In the annual very lengthy podcast, Jimmy and Producer Joe invite friends Avery Kaplan and Heidi MacDonald to join in the fun. They each talk about their favorite picks of 2024 in comics, TV, streaming and film. While they all often have multiple picks per category, Jimmy still has trouble narrowing down his choices (as usual). Hang in there for the ride as there a tons of great picks from the gang! Of course, as we always say, these picks are what we read/saw and we didn't read/see EVERYTHING. Do understand if we don't talk about some of your faves. Let us know what they are and we'll check them out! Also, get a hold of us! Thanks for listening!
In a special year end episode of Off Panel, we look at the defining themes of 2024 in comics with the help of retailer Steve Anderson from Third Eye Comics, The Beat's Heidi MacDonald, and writer Joshua Williamson. Up first is Anderson (1:12), who talks about a time of struggle for Marvel in comic shops, the area of effect that can have on other publishers, what seems to be fueling those struggles, his hopes for the future, and more. After that is MacDonald (29:26), who discusses "The Big Lie," which is all about the intersection of comic publishers and media rights, the focus publishers have on media rights these days, the new publishers chasing IP plays, the impact that has on the rest of the industry, and more. And to close is Williamson (1:01:02), who talks a year defined by the phrase "go big or go home," varying examples of that thinking, why that's so important, the importance of big swings, how that affects creators and publishers alike, and more.
To discuss the first half of April 1967, MRC welcomes legendary comics journalist Heidi MacDonald (who actually knew Marie Severin and tells us about her!) She chose her favorites, so we're out of order, doing X-Men 31, Amazing Spider-Man 47, Tales to Astonish 90 featuring Namor and Hulk, and Strange Tales 155 featuring SHIELD and Dr Strange! Check it out!
We continue to celebrate the life of the legendary cartoonist John Cassaday who tragically died on September 9th. He was one of Jimmy's closest friends. Jimmy shares some stories of their friendship and adventures. He also asked some of John's friends/colleagues to send in their memories of him as well. They talk about his incredible body of work, how they met, fun times together and more. Thanks so much to Ben Raab, Paul Pope, Heidi MacDonald, CB Cebulski, John Layman, Fabio Moon, Laura Martin, Michael Avon Oeming, Lorraine Cink, Nick Barrucci, Dean Haspiel, Marta Balusek and Producer Joe for sharing their reflections on John. This is an emotional and raw episode but also full of love and light. We all love and miss him terribly. We were all lucky to have him in our lives. His legacy will keep his energy around us eternally. Thanks for listening.

Sorry for delay of this episode! Jimmy is exhausted after all of his massive and fun coverage from San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). He got around 14 interviews and covered 3 press rooms. He also helped his pal Heidi MacDonald of The Beat by appearing on 2 episode's of Electric Now's "Con Daily" segments. Go check those out on their site! In this episode, Jimmy gives his recap of the show. Overall attendance, exhibitors, cosplayers, guests, events, friends, drinks, rants, raves and more! He also had a chance to talk to Maria Bamford and Scott Marvel Cassidy. They chat about their new graphic novel HOGBOOK AND LAZER EYES, how they met, their relationship, pugs, hooking up with a Ferengi AND Vulcan, stand-up comedy, exes, and more. The Beat's Heidi MacDonald returns to the podcast to talk about Penguin Random House's acquisition of BOOM! Studios and our expectations for San Diego Comic Con. MacDonald discusses the big PRH/BOOM! news, why the former may have wanted to acquire the latter, the big news ahead of San Diego Comic Con, where things are right now, DSTLRY's big move, how SDCC is shaping up, how unique SDCC is relative to other conventions, the big plans The Beat has for the event, her upcoming daily TV show, celebrating 20 years of The Beat, the evolution of comic cons, what keeps her excited about The Beat, and more. There are two corrections from the podcast. First, Filip Sablik's title at BOOM! Studios was actually President of Publishing & Marketing, not Sales & Marketing as I stated in the episode. Second, while Tiny Onion does a lot of design and production work for DSTLRY, Emma Price, Erika Schnatz, Jared K. Fletcher, Francesco Francavilla, and Lee Garbett have also done design work on a variety of individual titles and logos.

Nicole O'Byrne talks to Heidi MacDonald about her book, We Shall Persist: Women and the Vote in the Atlantic Provinces. We Shall Persist captures both the long campaign and the years of disappointment. Suffrage victories across Atlantic Canada were steps in an unfinished and contentious march toward gender, race, and class equality. This insightful book will appeal to readers with an interest in women's history, as well as to historians, political scientists, and women's studies scholars and students. Heidi MacDonald is the author of numerous articles on women's and gender history in Atlantic Canada. She is co-author, with Rosa Bruno-Jofré and Elizabeth Smyth, of Vatican II and Beyond: The Changing Mission and Identity of Canadian Women Religious. From 1999 to 2018, she taught at the University of Lethbridge and served as the founding director of the Centre of Oral History and Tradition from 2013 to 2017. In 2019, she became dean of arts and professor of history and politics at the University of New Brunswick Saint John. This week Jess and I continued our discussion of PITCHING, and about feeling weird and lousy and under pressure and low boundary and high maintenance and under the gun and everything else!Tune in next week to for Episode 8 of The Terrible Anvil: Monetizing Every Moment of Waking Existence on Instagram (What Could Go Wrong?) I believe a transcript will be posted with this!?Cheers' y'allHere's some random thoughts we hitWe talked about both creators and publishers creating realistic expectations and boundaries--if a publisher doesn't give you a deadline, don't wait for them to hand you one! You might need to build you own. I thought having a looming book deal would give me the accountability to stay on track, and while it sort of did, it mostly stressed me out. I'm so grateful I was able to publish a beautiful book, but it was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be (see those pesky "feelings" Cara Gormally mentioned above.)Tom Hart talked about his second-book slump where he tasked himself with outlining a sequel to his beautiful graphic memoir, Rosalie Lightning. At the end of his twenty-some page outline, Tom didn't want to make that book! It ended up becoming the seed for his book The Art of the Graphic Memoir.Tom said a paraphrase of a great quote, whose origins are unknown to me:"How to get a book deal? First get famous!"I chimed in: "“If I'm not going to make any money I might as well make comics!""Later on the call Tom Hart and I tried to speak to this great idea from Adrean Clark :"I wonder if it's possible to talk about transforming our work -- not everything has to be something to "go big or go home" on. An idea can be a self-published zine, can be a comic feature in a newspaper, and so on. Thinking about the full range of pitches, whether to pitch to ourselves or to others. Does that make sense?"Tom Hart read this quote I sent him from an article, via J.F. Martel:I also added: "spend time with your own work for a long time before launching it from the (marketing) cannon!"We remembered the awesome Pro Call with Laura Gao, you can see the recording over here! Their process and the timeline for their book deal (Messy Roots) was super-duper fast and a ton of work all at once after their comic went viral. (thanks Jim for the Pro Call link!!!)Tom Hart mentioned the art critic Heidi MacDonald's podcast interview with comics creator Box Brown. Box said: "I feel stupid for following my dreams!" Re: capitalism can kinda make things feel cruddy. Tom noted that "There are a lot of reasons to feel bad while making art. Most of those are expectations of results, expectations, rewards"He noted the value of self publishing and Jim added: "I agree with Tom! I just ordered 100 of my books from Lulu. And that was after a couple of proofing cycles."I asked Tom is art-making might be a form of mental illness and he said, "Art is not a mental illness but a sane response to an insane world."Leonie Sharrock asked:Question re 'form' … what happens when you want to go hybrid? how do we pitch hybrid works?Tom Hart said:Leonie, those are more difficult but slowly people catch on…
COMICS ROT YOUR BRAIN! is a deep dive into ‘80s comics (plus a few noteworthy exceptions). In this weekly podcast, screenwriters Chris Derrick (STAR TREK: PICARD) and Steven Bagatourian (AMERICAN GUN) discuss their favorite books, runs, and creators from the Bronze Age.• EPISODE 1: Steven and Chris embark on the paradigm-shattering psychedelic trip that is the first seven issues of THRILLER — published by DC Comics in 1983 — and find themselves awestruck in its wake. One thing is certain: Trevor Von Eeden is a goddamn genius.SHOW NOTES0:05 - Discussing our first exposure to this "unsung-shock-your-brain" idea bomb of a comic.9:07 - An attempt to summarize our unwieldy pulp beast of a story, with an assist from Robert Loren Fleming, as well as discursive detours into THE SHADOW, DOC SAVAGE, and the great Richard Pryor.18:04 - Unconventional pacing in THRILLER and the powerful "delayed cumulative impact" of its story rhythms.23:20 - Novel panel compositions ("an obscene amount of panels!"), storytelling innovations, and the downright psychedelic properties of THRILLER. “…an incredible sense of discovery... This week, Jimmy recruited many of his favorite reviewer friends to send in 3 of their favorite things in entertainment for 2022. This episode originally aired in two parts on 3/24/16 and 3/25/16. It features Gavin Napier prosecuting Man of Steel and then Mark Radulich and Robert Winfree defending Man of Steel.Reaction to the film among comics creators was mixed. Those who enjoyed it include Jeff Parker, Heidi MacDonald, Ethan Van Sciver, Christos Gage and former Superman writer Dan Jurgens. Among its detractors were Joe Keatinge, Sean McKeever, Gabriel Hardman and Mark Waid. MacDonald praised the film's action, drama and leads Henry Cavill and Amy Adams. Van Sciver singled out Cavill in particular for praise. Gage called it the best Superman film since 1980's Superman II. Hardman said that he liked a lot of the mechanics but did not connect with the characters, which robbed the story of tension. Waid, who wrote the origin miniseries Superman: Birthright, criticized the film for its overall "joyless" tone, and for Superman's decision to kill Zod, a criticism echoed by other creators. Writer Grant Morrison, who wrote the critically acclaimed miniseries All-Star Superman, expressed mixed reaction to the film, saying that while they "kinda liked it and kinda didn't", it did not present anything new, as they would have preferred a "second act" type story with Lex Luthor instead of re-establishing the character by presenting information Morrison is already familiar with. Morrison also questioned the need for a superhero to kill, as did artist Neal Adams. Adams suggested that other alternatives were open to Superman when Zod threatened innocent people with his heat vision, such as covering his eyes. He also criticized Superman for not moving the battle away from Metropolis as the character did at the end of Superman II. Jim Lee had a positive opinion: "It's epic. It's got a lot of heart, but one of the things that was kind of missing from the last Superman movie I think was the action, and this movie has it in spades. I mean it is a visual thrill ride. It is amazing. You get to see all the powers of Superman, and in all its glory, and I think people are going to be blown away."Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsosnapchat: markkind76FB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

Who doesn't love a great drinking story? For the final episode we go back to the late 1800s when prohibition was first introduced on PEI. Although prohibition lasted for 70 years on the island, you could still get your booze… if you knew where to go. From rumrunners to moonshine makers to speakeasy bars, we discover just how inventive islanders were in skirting the law for a good drink. Features guest interviews: Dr. Heidi MacDonald, Reginald "Dutch" Thompson, J. Clint Morrison and Ken Mill.
In this week's episode of Off Panel, The Beat's Heidi MacDonald returns to the show to chat about the recent craziness in the comics world. MacDonald discusses recent events, what it means, the Substack deal, Substack's reading experience, its viability, ComiXology's big change, the retailer response to this digital wave, the DC/Webtoon deal, creators protecting themselves, conventions, the distribution situation, and more.
By special request, this episode is a monologue about graphic novels in libraries. It was created for Karen Gavigan's students at Old Dominion University (Go Monarchs!), but I think there's plenty for a general audience to appreciate and dissect. We talk about the rising popularity of comics, particularly for younger readers and manga, perceived notions of quality in reading material, booktalking, professional reading, and suggestions for classroom activities. “People used to laugh at me when I said kids liked reading comics. In this week's special episode of Off Panel, we look at the defining themes of 2020 in comics with the help of Random House Graphic's Publishing Director Gina Gagliano, Third Eye Comics' Steve Anderson, and The Beat's Heidi MacDonald. Up first is Gagliano (1:15), who talks about a year of revolutionary change, the year's impact on promoting and publishing comics, how the book market was affected, and the year that was in that market. After that is Anderson (27:57), who discusses the disappearing backlist of trades in the direct market, distributor changes, and how single issues were affected. And to close is MacDonald (59:46), who talks about the end of the single issue, the rise of the webcomic, and how the balance of formats is shifting.
Who would've thought superhero comics could be political? In the first issue of Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris' Ex Machina, we see a hero elected to be Mayor of New York - and why they put him there. To get into it further, we're rejoined this week by special guest Heidi MacDonald, who knows a thing or two about BKV comics...
A group of magnificent bastards set off to investigate the extraordinary actions of some irredeemable bastards as Warren Ellis and John Cassaday kick off their much-loved Wildstorm series, which heralded in the 21st century. Everything old is new again, and this week Matt welcomes special guest Heidi MacDonald to don a trenchcoat and talk all about it!
In this week's episode of Off Panel, Heidi MacDonald from The Beat returns to the show for a chat about the state of comics during a pandemic, which, I should note, was recorded Thursday evening before the insanity of Friday (we did an addendum in the episode). MacDonald discusses how her world is, comics changing from the inside, conventions, whether Diamond would be the only direct market distributor at the end of this, comics' obsession with the new, DC's distribution solutions, DCBS and Midtown as retailers/distributors, doing this when shops can't even open, the William Schanes story, AWA and Bad Idea, the state of Image, the book market, ComicHub vs. retailer solutions, who she's concerned about, learning from this experience, the comics community, and more.
As usual, we're just a bit late with our "Best of" list but we got there finally. Jimmy welcomes friends Heidi MacDonald and Jon Hoche to do their annual podcast picking their favorite comics, TV, film and more of 2019. This is the favorites that we read/saw/etc. We didn't read/see everything so there are probably some things that are left out that may have made it. Just our opinions! But we think many of you will agree with us. So much great content in 2019 and we barely scratch the surface on it all. What did we pick? Tune in to find out! The Federal Governments decision to replace the 2011 Canadian mandatory Census long form with a voluntary “National Household Survey” has been a hotly debated issue since Canada's minister of industry Tony Clement announced the change earlier this summer. Despite widespread criticism and weak public support for the change, it appears likely that the Harper Government will follow through on their controversial plan. In the past, the mandatory Canadian Census has been held every five years with 80 percent of the households receiving the short form and 20 percent the long form. Under the new proposal, all households would receive the mandatory Census short form and one month later, one third of those would be asked to voluntarily complete the long form survey. The speakers will explain the importance of the Census long form information and evaluate the possible consequences of the voluntary vs. mandatory aspect of the proposed changes, regarding both near and long term. Speakers: Susan McDaniel and Heidi MacDonald Dr. Susan McDaniel is the Prentice Research Chair in Global Population and Economy, Director of the Prentice Institute and Sociology Professor at the University of Lethbridge. She relocated to Lethbridge in the summer of 2009 from the University of Utah where she was Professor and Senior Investigator in the Institute for Public & International Affairs. Dr. McDaniel is an internationally known sociologist/social demographer, the author of many books and research articles. She is a frequent advisor on social and science policies both in Canada and elsewhere. Dr. McDaniel also serves on the National Statistics Council of eminent Canadians which advises the federal government on data collection/analysis. She has advised on the Census for almost two decades. Dr. Heidi MacDonald has served as a History Professor at the University of Lethbridge since 1999 and was Chair of the History Department from 2004-09. She is currently a member of the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors. Dr. MacDonald received her PhD in History from the University of New Brunswick in 2000. She studies and teaches Canadian history and is currently working on a book on coming of age during the Great Depression in Canada. Over her career, she has been a frequent user of the Census of Canada both in her own research and in teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
