Today on the show, I talk with Ben Burgis. Ben is the author of “Canceling Comedians While the World Burns“ and “Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left.” He has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Miami and teaches Philosophy at Georgia State University Perimeter College. He writes a column for Jacobin. Ben Burgis: https://benburgis.com/
Ben Burgis is the author of the upcoming book: Christopher Hitchens: What He Got Right, How He Went Wrong, and Why He Still Matters, as well as the host of "Give Them An Argument" on YouTube. His previous book Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left was covered in Current Affairs and he and Nathan have co-written before. In today's episode, Ben and Nathan discuss Hitchens' career, writings, and beliefs, including: - The enduring value of Hitchens' leftist polemics against Henry Kissinger and Bill Clinton - The roots of Hitchens' repugnant and despicable views on Islam and the Iraq War - The question of how useful his strident "anti-theism" was - The way the 80s and 90s neoliberal consensus caused certain socialists to lose their way - The need for the left to avoid Hitchens' worst tendencies while learning from his erudition, debating flair, and love of skewering overrated sacred figures The Trial of Henry Kissinger can be seen on YouTube. Ben's book on Hitchens is now available for pre-order. Edited by Tim Gray
In the past few years, "canceling" someone from prominent platforms or careers has become an increasingly controversial topic in today's cultural and political circles. A comedian or other public figures says, Tweets or does offensive things and a public backlash, often fueled by politically progressive social media, ensues. It's destroyed careers. It's targeted people by mistake. How does cancel culture effect movement building projects on the left? Is it a form of leftist self-sabotage, misplaced priorities or a legit means of speaking truth to power? We talk about all of it with Ben Burgis, author of the new book "Canceling Comedians While the World Burns." We dive deep into the "cancel culture" wars on the left. But, also get into how it's practiced by the right with attempts to "cancel" everything from Critical Race Theory to opponents of Israel, and use it to further the left-right culture war. Plus, we discuss the biggest cancellation EVER- Trump canceled from Twitter! Ben Burgis is a philosophy professor and the author of Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left and “Canceling Comedians While the World Burns.” He is host of the podcast Give Them An Argument. I was real excited for this one. I've been a fan of his debunking videos, and his book, "Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left". Ben Burgis has just finished a new book, that he says should be out next year titled, "Cancelling Comedians While the World Burns: A Critique of the Contemporary Left". We talked about the upcoming book, the scuttlebutt around "cancel culture", Dave Chappelle, and of course, his appearance on Jessie Lee Peterson's show. We had some damn good laughs. I for one, can't wait to do it again! Find about everything Ben Burgis Here: https://benburgis.com/ Thank you so much for checking this out. There's a meme, perpetuated by figures like "Facts Don't Care About Your Feelings" Ben Shapiro and "Not An Argument" Stefan Molyneux, that the left runs only on emotion while the right are the bastions logic, reason, and Rationality(TM). Ben Burgis, author of the upcoming book Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left, disagrees and joins us on this supersized edition of Parallax Views to DESTROY the right-wing noise machine. Ben Burgis is a regular contributor at The Michael Brooks Show, The Serfs, and Zero Books (publisher of Ben's upcoming book) as well as a Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers University. Ben Burgis DESTROYING someone like Ben Shapiro on The Majority Report w/ Sam Seder The conversation begins with Ben describing his background as a professor who teaches critical reasoning before explaining what drove him to write the upcoming book Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left. We then delve into online obsession, particularly on YouTube, for debates with "[X] DESTROYS [Y]" in the titles and how Ben feels about the way rhetoric, logic, and debate have been twisted by the right. In addition, Ben and I discuss some of the fallacies that occur during debates such as the ad hominem and the appeal to authority. From there the discussion takes many twists and turns too numerous to get into in this synopsis. We discuss issues such as transgender acceptance, "Social Justice Warriors", deplatforming, cultural appropriation, the notion of "The West", Hume's Law as it relates to Ben Shapiro, social constructivism vs. standpoint epistemology, how Ben DESTROYS the right's "I AM AN APACHE ATTACK HELICOPTER" argument, equality of opportunity vs equality of outcome, and the ideas of Karl Marx amongst much, much more. We even get into the idea of panpsychism unexpectedly but naturally! Hear Ben Burgis on The Michael Brooks Show Patreon's Exclusive Segment "The Debunk" Every Week! SUPPORT PARALLAX VIEWS ON PATREON!
