Rainforest Action Network emerged in 1985, when it took over a fledgling effort to protect rainforests from transnational corporations funding the expansion of tropical cattle ranching. It excelled at using nonviolent, civil disobedience in dramatic campaigns that captured the attention of the public, media, and RAN's corporate adversaries. As a result, two decades later rainforest conservation went from a niche academic topic to a fixture in American popular culture, the rights of Indigenous people had gone from ignored or romanticized to at least considered in discussions of the management of their ancestral homelands, and RAN had scored a series of victories over some of the planet's largest corporations. In Rainforest Radicals David Benac traces the evolution of RAN and radical, transnational grassroots environmentalism through the four campaigns identified at the group's founding: rainforest beef, Hawai‘ian rainforests, tropical timber, and multinational development banks. I can still remember staring at the screen and listening to the verdict that the officers had been acquitted. I felt utter shock, on one hand, and deja vu, on the other. I, like millions of Americans, watched the video footage ad nauseam of the brutal beating of Rodney King at the hands of the LAPD and thought to myself there was no way these cops would get off. Yet many, including in my neighborhood of Richmond, California, were less sanguine about the prospect of justice being delivered. Such skepticism proved well-founded. The anti-imperialist movement of the latter half of the 20th century failed as a socialist project, the impulses of nationalism seeming to have little power to defeat international capital and neo-colonialism once these systems gained any subtlety. In the 21st century even the pretense of the anti-imperialist movement being socialist is dropped, and instead socialists tail peripheral and semi peripheral bourgois countries that happen to be on the wrong side of the Evil Empire.
