Paul Allan Offit is an American pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases, vaccines, immunology, and virology. He is the co-inventor of a rotavirus vaccine. Offit is the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology, Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Former Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases (1992-2014), and the Director of the Vaccine Education Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.     Eric Smith received the Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1987, and a Ph.D. in Physics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1993, with a dissertation on problems in string theory and high-temperature superconductivity. From 1993 to 2000 he worked in physical, nonlinear, and statistical acoustics at the Applied Research Labs: U. T. Austin, and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. From 2000 he has worked at the Santa Fe Institute on problems of self-organization in thermal, chemical, and biological systems. A focus of his current work is the statistical mechanics of the transition from the geochemistry of the early earth to the first levels of biological organization, with some emphasis on the emergence of the metabolic network. He also did a fellowship in social and community psychiatry. Since 1974, he has practiced psychiatry in both the public and private sectors. At Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital (and Charles Drew Postgraduate Medical School, where he was Assistant Professor) in South Central Los Angeles and the Richmond Community Mental Health Center in Richmond, he served as director or co-director of an outpatient clinic, a psychiatric residency program, and a partial hospitalization program. He left the Richmond Center in 1981, joined the faculty at the Wright Institute, and has continued to teach and to maintain his private practice while consulting to various mental health centers and social rehabilitation programs in the community. His forensic psychiatry experience includes testimony in several large class action litigations concerning jail and prison conditions, sexual abuse, and the quality of mental health services inside correctional facilities.
