In this episode, Yellowjackets and The Originals actor Steven Krueger takes us on the unexpected journey from aspiring lawyer to full-time actor and, more recently, director. He opens up about the turning point when he realized he didn't want to be a lawyer — he wanted to be James Spader on Boston Legal — and how a brutally honest producer's advice shifted his mindset from “dabbling” in acting to making it a serious pursuit. Krueger gets candid about the value of life experience and education in shaping his craft, and how he built his career brick by brick — including the multiple rounds of auditions it took to land his breakout role on The Originals. Steven shares hilarious and humbling audition stories, like bombing a Percy Jackson read with a full-blown Cyclops voice, and lessons learned about navigating an industry that's equal parts craft, luck, and timing. He also dives into his evolution as an artist, from feeling creatively stagnant on long-running shows to pushing himself into directing his first short film. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Steven Krueger right here. Everybody needs a Jonathan Shapiro in their life. In this special season premiere of Talk About It, Greg sits down with his closest mensch and the other half of his party of two at the deli, Jonathan Shapiro. When life gets hard, Greg turns to him for sage advice and a nice bowl of matzoh ball soup. As you'll find out in this episode, Jonathan has quite a personal history, beginning his career as a federal prosecutor and eventually becoming... you guessed it... a television show writer and showrunner. (BOSTON LEGAL, THE PRACTICE, GOLIATH, THE BLACKLIST, among many others.)  Not only that, Jonathan has a deep personal connection to Greg because he is also the father of a son with epilepsy, the incredible Zeke Shapiro. The two mensches talk about Zeke's journey with his condition, and his abject bravery to perform stand up comedy and become a news anchor. They have always - and will continue to - lean on each other when times are really hard, or celebrate together when times are really great, and everything in between. All over a tuna melt on rye heels, of course. You don't want to miss this episode! The Talk About It podcast is excited to be sponsored in part by Neurelis. Send us a textEpisode 518"The Fugitive", "Terrifier 3" and "The Munsters"Actor: Daniel Roebuck. The very kind Dan Roebuck joins me to talk his lengthy acting career from Matlock to Rob Zombie and his role in the iconic "The Fugitive". Plus Dan clears the air once and for all as to what happened with his casting in "Home Alone."Having made his feature film debut starring in the teen comedy Cavegirl Daniel Roebuck quickly realized that there was only one direction to travel in his career. Up!Soon after Cavegirl, Roebuck established himself as one of the industry's youngest character actors with his haunting portrayal as the teenage killer, Samson in The River's Edge.Daniel Roebuck was born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, At the age of 10, he started performing in talent shows doing impressions of movie stars he loved. He joined a local circus two years later and made his debut as one of the youngest clowns in the country. Roebuck's clown act eventually segued into a magic act and he performed that throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. His film credits are myriad, having starred in blockbusters like The Fugitive, US Marshals, and Final Destination, as well as popular titles including Agent Cody Banks and it's sequel, That's What I Am, Money Talks, Flash Of Genius and so many more.Lately, Roebuck has enjoyed working in a number of horror movies - his favorite genre. He has collaborated with filmmaker Rob Zombie on Halloween, Halloween 2, Devil's Rejects, and Lords of Salem (as well as a commercial for AMDRO, the insecticide). He also appeared in Don Coscarelli's cult favorite Bubba Ho Tep as well as the director's Reggie's Tales and John Dies At The End.Daniel has also been a familiar face on television for nearly 3 decades, he was a regular for three seasons on the evergreen hit drama, Matlock, portraying attorney 'Cliff Lewis," the junior partner of the law firm headed by Andy Griffith's beloved character, 'Ben Matlock.' Interestingly, his landing the role was the fulfillment of a promise made several years earlier with his first appearance on "Matlock" in its inaugural season. At that time, Roebuck was told that Griffith had been so impressed with his work that he would be back as a regular on the show. It took five seasons, two more guest shots as different characters, and a change of networks, but Griffith kept his promise and Roebuck indeed became a series regular. As a television guest star, Daniel has played countless characters. Some of his most memorable are a cop who literally turns into a pig on Grimm, a Romulan on Star Trek, Next Generation, a gun toting hostage taker on NYPD Blue, a cranky studio owner on Sonny With A Chance and a grieving father on Glee. He played other memorable roles on New Adventures of Old Christine, NCIS, Ghost Whisperer, CSI, Boston Legal, CSI Miami, Law And Order, Desperate Housewives and Hot in Cleveland. On the popular show, Lost, Roebuck portrayed the infamous Dr. Leslie Arzt, the aggravating science teacher whose explosive exit in the finale of the first season remains one of television's most surprising and talked about moments. He has starred in dozens of TV Movies. Perhaps his most famous turn was his critically acclaimed portrayal of Jay Leno in The Late Shift. Welcome, Daniel Roebuckwww.mmcpodcast.com#thefugitive #robzombie #horror #homealone #homealone2 #homealone #christmasmovies #themunsters Reach out to Darek Thomas and Monday Morning Critic!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mondaymorningcritic/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mondaymorningcritic/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mondaymorningcriticMondaymorningcritic@gmail.com

On Episode 150 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis kicks off a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is DAVID GAUTREAUX, the actor perhaps best known for work he never did – the role of Vulcan science officer Xon in the proposed Star Trek: Phase II television series. When the series was aborted, he was given the role of Commander Branch in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. David has also guest-starred in numerous television series including Man From Atlantis, Search for Tomorrow, One Life to Live, T. J. Hooker, L.A. Law, ER, Rules of Engagement, Boston Legal, and The Beast. He played recurring roles on Franklin & Bash, Damages, and the latest incarnation of S.W.A.T. Today's Guest is Meredith Patterson and she happens to be a very good friend of Scott's. They met another lifetime ago…waaaaaay back in December 1996 and got to perform together 8 shows a week on the US and Canadian tour of Singin' in the Rain.   When the record button for this interview was pressed and when Meredith and Scott popped up on each others screens, they were so happy to see each other, they wound up talking and reminiscing for a while before they even talked about Meredith's career and the Disney stuff.  Since they talked for so long about so many things, and since people have asked what doesn't make the Final Cut - what gets edited out of these interviews - what's going to happen is this - Part 1 is released today, Part 2 will come out next week, and the week after, a bonus episode of some of Meredith and Scott's personal conversation will come out, with Meredith's blessing. You'll hear these two friends laugh, reminisce about their time together, etc.  On Broadway, Meredith is known for her incredible skills as a dancer both in balletic grace and tap dancing, and the New York Times compared her to the legendary Ginger Rogers. How's that for a compliment? She made her broadway debut in the Julie Taymor directed play The Green Bird. For those not familiar, Julie Taymor directed the Broadway musical, The Lion King. Meredith then lived the classic understudy's dream come true when she took over the starring role of Peggy Sawyer in the Tony Award Winning Revival of 42nd Street, where she made her Broadway musical debut.  Meredith was also the first non-original principal to be recorded for posterity with the Lincoln Center Archives. When her Broadway contract was up, Meredith went on to star in the groundbreaking Moscow production of 42nd Street, where she was the first American actress to perform in an English-speaking production in Russia. Also on Broadway, she originated the role of Judy Haynes in Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Other theatre credits include A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden and The Boy Friend where she played the Julie Andrews role of Polly Browne under the direction of Julie Andrews. Her national tour credits include starring as Judy Haynes in White Christmas, Polly in Crazy For You, and Kathy Seldon in Singin' in the Rain.  Her television career began with her hilarious role on Boston Legal in a 5 episode arch opposite Candace Bergen and Tom Selleck for Disney owned ABC. She also guest starred on Law & Order SVU opposite Marissa Hargitay, The Good Wife, and Made in Jersey. She played Francesca on All My Children and is featured as one of the last 3 girls for the role of Val in the critically acclaimed A Chorus Line documentary, Every Little Step. Meredith made her feature film debut as Marilyn Monroe in Paramount's Company Man. Some other film credits include Broken Flowers, where she played opposite Bill Murray and was Lady Alyssa in Disney's The Princess Diaries II: Royal Engagement with Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, and Chris Pine. Meredith now lives in Montana with her husband and two children where she runs her own production company. She's written two books and she has her own podcast, all of which we'll be talking about...in Part 2 so stay tuned! This episode picks up at the end of Meredith and Scott reminiscing. The key to living a legendary life is to strive to be more like Abe Lincoln.  At least, that is what my guest this week, Jonathan Shapiro, says is the key.  Join us for a conversation  about the principles of the great Abraham Lincoln, and how following seven steps can help us all lead a more extraordinary life. We talk about stoicism, storytelling, humor, river raft rides, the heart of American culture, and the importance of love.  All of which lead us to look at how Abraham Lincoln, perhaps our greatest President of all time, built a blueprint that might save the soul of America.Jonathan Shapiro has written and produced some of television's most iconic legal dramas, including HBO's The Undoing, Amazon Prime's Goliath, and NBC Peacock's The Calling. An Emmy and Humanitas Award-winner, Shapiro's other television credits include Peacock's Mr. Mercedes, based on the Stephen King novels, NBC's series The Blacklist, FOX's Justice, NBC's Life, and the ABC series Boston Legal, The Practice, and Big Sky. How to Be Abe Lincoln: Seven Steps to Leading a Legendary Life by Jonathan Shapiro https://amzn.to/3RDzNJ6 More than at any time in American history, except perhaps Abe Lincoln's own, we need his help. And not just to inspire us. Over sixty-thousand books have been written about him, and most give us the heroic Lincoln. What we need now is a book that gives us the practical Lincoln. This is that book. It shows us how to survive our dangerously fractious age, one that is too often unmoored from truth, ignorant of facts, and unwilling to do the hard work of becoming better. It is written for those who don't just admire Lincoln but want to emulate his rational, practical approach to law, love, leadership, and life. It identifies the seven steps that made Abe Lincoln legendary and teaches you how to follow them. Written in the accessible, humorous style of Shapiro's previous books and television shows, the book is part history and biography, part philosophy, part memoir, part James Spader rant, and like Lincoln himself, a true original. Above all, it is great storytelling, using narrative to teach and inspire. About the author Jonathan Shapiro has spent the last 16 years writing and producing some of television's most iconic shows, including The Blacklist, The Practice, Life and Boston Legal. An Emmy, Peabody, and Humanitas Awards winner, he and David E. Kelley are the creators and executive producers of Trial, a legal thriller set to air on Amazon in 2016. In addition to his work in television, he is also the author of two recent books: the memoir "Liars, Lawyers, and the Art of Storytelling" (ABA Publishing) and the novel "Deadly Force" (Ankerwycke Press). For the last two years, he was Of Counsel for litigation at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm. Prior to writing for television, Jonathan spent a decade as a federal prosecutor and as an adjunct law professor at Loyola Law School and the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law. He is a member and the former chairman of the California Commission on Government Economy and Efficiency, as well as the founder and director of the Public Counsel Emergency for Torture Victims. He is a graduate of Harvard University, a Rhodes Scholar at Oriel College, Oxford University, and received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Welcome to Season 3, Episode 3 of Song Chronicles. Our guest today is singer and songwriter Billy Valentine, who just released a new album called "a masterclass in soul interpretation" by Record Collector. Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth was chosen as the first record for the relaunch of Flying Dutchman, the iconic imprint known for releases by Duke Ellington, Gil-Scott Heron, and Leon Thomas. Billy was born in West Virginia as one of thirteen children and later moved to Columbus, Ohio where his parents owned a nightclub. His brother Alvin introduced him to the path of professional entertainer. At 15 years old, Billy booked his first paying gig after sitting in with his brother Alvin during a performance at Leon's Cocktail Lounge in Patterson, NJ. After a stint in the original touring company of The Wiz, Billy and his brother John formed The Valentine Brothers. Together they recorded four albums and had a breakout Reagan-era protest single "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)." The Valentine Brothers After the duo split, Billy began a songwriting collaboration with Bob Thiele, Jr and Phil Roy. The trio's songs were recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Pops and Mavis Staples, The Neville Brothers, and his hero Ray Charles. We talk about the "pinch me" moment of hearing Ray's recording of his song, the title track of the album My World. Ray Charles's 1993 album My World Billy's incredible vocal interpretations made him a sought-after demo singer for songwriting greats like Burt Bacharach & Hal David and Gerry Goffin. Bob Thiele, Jr. says it was Billy's voice that made the songs they wrote together irresistible, making Billy "the secret weapon of nearly every songwriter in LA." We talk about how Billy came to sing on the soundtrack of Boston Legal. Burt Bacharach and Billy Valentine Recording during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 brought Billy back to the '60s, being brought up in Ohio during the Kent State and Vietnam War protests. He chose to reinterpret iconic protest songs by Gil-Scott Heron, Curtis Mayfield, and Stevie Wonder for his new record Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth. We talk about the permanence of protest songs in our cultural landscape. After many decades in the business, Billy says he is finally feeling good in his own skin and proud of how he made these songs sound. We talk about how hard artists are on themselves and how pleasing yourself is the hardest part. He has an ageless quality about him and describes himself as having a "young heart." Enjoy this conversation with a storied interpreter of songs.
