Send us a textKatie and Bridget wake up on a beach in New Jersey as they re-watch the could-be-considered-Christmas-movie: The Long Kiss Goodnight! It's a movie all about how all of those government conspiracy theories ARE true and when in doubt just drive off to Canada! Come along as we meet Samantha, a 90's woman with amnesia who gets her memory back through some good old fashioned boob grabs that lead to car crashes - all casual! Alongside her private investigator Mitch, Samantha begins to regain her lost memory, becomes her former self again (named Charly), all while viciously murdering literally so many people. Oh there's also a terrorist subplot that involves chemical warfare, child kidnapping, and messing up Niagra Falls... It sounds like it doesn't make sense but we promise it all comes together when ya watch it! We've got fuzzy hats, great one liners, and gun galore in this, as Bridget would say: "female version of Die Hard". Released in 1996, it stars Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Yvonne Zima, Craig Bierko, Brian Cox, and David Morse.

We talked about: Finding community, doing The Stump, Not doing Chandler on “Friends”, the wonderful and difficult friendship of Matthew Perry, doing theater as a kid, “easy” comics who took their time, playing villains, lying about knowing how to ride horses and almost dying on the horse, auditioning by “being that guy” to set you apart, The Great David Pressman, kind hearted Richard Kind, staring in broadway, fear of going out. my writing advice “how much pain can you take?”, always seeking connection. Saying “yes” to opportunities, Craig's dog boo.  Rye New York. Somehow Craig thinks I project warmth and kindness. Windows in school that go all the way to the ground that give kids the confidence to be on the world. Bullies who don't think they are bullies, the gain and loss of choice, and the idea that the journey we are all on must contain random gifts and failures to get us where we are now.  Bio: Craig Bierko made his Tony-nominated Broadway debut as “Professor Harold Hill” in Susan Stroman's Broadway revival of Meredith Willson's The Music Man. A familiar face to Broadway audiences, Craig most recently appeared in Conor McPherson's Girl from the North Country featuring songs by Bob Dylan; as “Sky Masterson” in Des McAnuff's revival of Guys & Dolls, and in Lincoln Center's Thou Shalt Not featuring music by Harry Connick. Craig recently completed the darkly comic feature film D(e)ad. Other film work includes starring opposite Russell Crowe in Ron Howard's Cinderella Man, The Long Kiss Goodnight with Samuel Jackson and Geena Davis, Larry David's cult classic Sour Grapes and Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Craig has appeared in numerous TV shows, most recently on the hit Netflix series Sex/Life as well as on the Peabody Award-winning UnREAL. Craig appeared as Carrie Bradshaw's love interest “Ray ‘The Jazz Guy' King” on HBO's iconic Sex and the City.  Craig bathed John Malkovich in his online talk show “Bathing with Bierko” and offers no apologies.

Gene Lyons and The King Bee became friends in 1995. Two years later, "The Long Kiss Goodnight" was released on VHS, capturing the heart of a young King Bee who spent the next three decades trying to convince Gene to watch it. For his 44th birthday, Gene was treated to a pizza and a spot on The King Bee's sofa to experience "The Long Kiss Goodnight" for the first time. And it was eye-opening, to say the least. Thanks to listener Jeremiah, the two friends sat down in person, mixed a few old-fashioned cocktails and finally recorded a conversation about what might be Samuel L. Jackson's finest work. They discussed how Gene cannot experience extreme happiness without immediately feeling sorrow. They explored how much fun a family actually can have with produce. They even dove into Craig Bierko's impressive dating history and '90s America's naivety when it came to paramilitary firearms.  Was Geena Davis too old for a shift into sexy action roles? Why didn't police respond to the trail of bodies she left behind? Should Mitch and Charly have ended up together? Who would you cast in a "The Long Kiss Goodnight" remake? And was this movie a waste of good Cox? Join us for a rare, intimate episode you won't forget. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. But sometimes we talk to filmmakers! About filmmakers! Today we talk to up-and-coming writer/director Andrew Adams whose debut feature American Meltdown is making a robust festival run as we speak! He joins us to spearhead our first incarnation of “The First Frame:” a B-Side segment in which we examine the first films of legendary filmmakers. The three pictures we focus on today are My Best Friend's Birthday by Quentin Tarantino, Sour Grapes by Larry David, and Barking Dogs Never Bite by Bong Joon-ho. We discuss our love for these three masters, the seeds of their genius in each of their debuts (as well as each piece's shortcomings), and the strange connection between all three of them. We also dive into the burgeoning “No-Budget Era” of indie filmmaking and what it means for the future. There's talk of Jerry Seinfeld's upcoming Pop-Tarts movie Unfrosted, the making of Tarantino's seminal Reservoir Dogs, and the immediate impressiveness of Bong Joon-ho's films. Additional things that come up include the underrated indie noir Cold Weather by Aaron Katz, the great debut book from George Orwell, Down and Out in Paris and London, and how Craig Bierko turned down the role of Chandler on Friends. Graham continues our theme of FILMS FROM BU ALUMS with a CFA '79 Graduate KNOWN for her action roles...or rather...just the one. Geena Davis, a woman for the people, tried her best to advance female action stars with her role as Samantha Caine in 1996's action/crime/spy Thriller, The Long Kiss Goodnight. Written by action industry stalwart Shane Black (a script purchased for a record breaking $4 mil), the story opens with an idyllic suburban mother and teacher, Samantha -- a woman who woke up on a New Jersey beach 8 years ago with no memory and pregnant with her daughter, Caitlin. After a very lovely and Hallmark-worthy Christmas party, Samantha is injured in a car crash -- a crash which stirs up memories of her past, and memories of a blonde, badass smoker named Charly, Samantha's alter-identity. Meanwhile, an incomparable and charming Samuel L. Jackson plays private detective Mich Hennessy, a man Samantha hired to uncover her past, and a man who winds up getting the crap kicked out of him mercilessly this entire film. Mitch and Sam team up with Charly's old boss (played by Brian Cox) to uncover a secret plot between the CIA and an organization known as Deadalus -- former villains Charley was investigating before her self-induced amnesia, led by dreamy Craig Bierko (another BU attende!). So join your favorite BU alum podcasters here as we discuss Queen Geena's valiant attempt to forward women in the action genre, and how we think that whatever Samantha's memory is attempting to dislodge, much like Brian Cox's dog who has been licking its asshole for the past hour), is either gone for good, or there to stay. In part 2 of my conversation with actor Craig Bierko, he looks back at some of his most popular roles from television and movies. He also has fond memories of his Tony Award nominated performance in The Music Man and his co-star Rebecca Luker, who died late in 2020. On a lighter note, Craig recalls his audition for a sitcom that would become one of the longest running in television history.

The Long Kiss Goodnight is obnoxious, loud, and dumb. In other words, most action movies of the 80s and 90s. It's also hopelessly convoluted and botches its central premise—that of an amnesic suburban housewife who has forgotten that she used to be an assassin. Starring Geena Davis—in her second collaboration with former husband Renny Harlin—as Samantha Caine (the innocent)/Charly Baltimore (the no-so-innocent), The Long Kiss Goodnight just isn't equal to the sum of its parts. The supporting cast is great—boasting Samuel L. Jackson, Brian Cox, Craig Bierko, and David Morse, amongst others—and it was written by Shane Black, the literal master of this conceit (i.e. the mismatched action duo). Even with those elements, it just never comes together. Sure, there are scenes that work, but not enough of them; and for an action film, its set pieces generally fall flat or down a drain at Niagara Falls, only to reappear unscathed. Critics didn't agree with our pod's assessment. The film sits at 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, though, were skeptical. It grossed just $89.5 million on a budget of $65. But, its failures set a nice template for future films and proved—however unnecessary it was to prove—that women can also kick ass. So, sit back, set your sights on a Head Hunter IPA from Fat Head's Brewery, and deal with the fact that life is pain! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Chumpzilla, and Mayor McCheese are blowing shit up with Charly Baltimore and trying to remember exactly why we're doing it! This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Was Davis' second collaboration with Harlin better than the water logged dreck that was Cutthroat Island? (00:00) Lingering Questions – Shane Black loves Christmas, but what's his best holiday-centered film? (47:08) The "Life is Pain" Trivia Night Challenge – After we hear a word from our brothers in beer, Hop Nation USA, Capt. After studying with the legendary New York acting teacher, William Esper, David began his career on stage performing everything from Shakespeare, to off-beat new comedies to edgy experimental work. His early east coast theatre credits include productions at The Second Stage, The Public Theatre, The Manhattan Punch Line, La Mama, The Long Wharf Theatre and The Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Humana Festival.    His first TV job was a small part in HBO’s historic drama “And the Band Played On.”  Known for his quirky characterizations, he’s since played many major guest star and recurring roles on such shows as "Modern Family," "The Blacklist," "Rectify," “Mad Men,” “Justified,” “True Blood,” “CSI,” “NCIS,” “Castle,” “Bones,” “Ugly Betty” “Criminal Minds,” “iCarly,” “Longmire,” and “Days of Our Lives.”  But he is probably best known for playing the creepy “Lincoln Meyer” on season three of “Boston Legal” (a character created for him by TV icon, David E. Kelley).   David is also a produced screenwriter (Fox Searchlight’s hit comedy “Kingdom Come”), a columnist, a popular spoken-word performer and an award-winning director (“Available Men”).  His critically acclaimed one-man storytelling shows consistently play to sold out houses.  Since 2008, he’s taught seminars and private classes for professional actors and when time allows, he serves as a part-time adjunct faculty member with the Professional Acting Program at UCLA and at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (both the New York and L.A. campuses) Over the course of his career, David has had the pleasure of working with many acclaimed writers, directors and actors, including Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Candice Bergen, Craig Bierko, Julie Bowen, Delta Burke, Thomas Gibson, Whoopi Goldberg, Angie Harmon, Mark Harmon, Stephen McKinley Henderson, John Heard, L.L.Cool J., Jon Jory, David E. Kelley, Howard Korder, Ian McKellen, Matthew Modine, Timothy Olyphant, Dolly Parton, Richard Schiff, James Spader, William Shatner, Matthew Weiner and Julie White. In 2014, he created and co-produced Sci-Fest LA: The Los Angeles Science Fiction One-Act Play Festival, an annual event consisting of two rotating evenings of short original sci-fi plays featuring actors known for their work in iconic franchises like “Star Trek,” “The Walking Dead,” “Supernatural,” “Lost” and “The X-Files.”    His first book, "WORKING ACTOR: Breaking in, Making a Living and Making a Life in the Fabulous Trenches of Show Business" is being published by Random House (Ten Speed Press) in February, 2019. Bad Reception: Making the Best of Bad TV

Happy Independence... Week!? We celebrate America by taking a look at what it does best: taking something from dumb old England and making it way better!! ::guitar solo:: In 1992 NBC took a crack at remaking the cult BBC sci-fi comedy hit Red Dwarf, hoping to find the next big American sitcom. Even though it never aired, and never even got a second episode, it's pretty obvious which one is better. I say that as someone who has never seen the British version, but blindly assume it is true.  Morgan's back (although she's currently in the UK, so you know where her allegiance lie...) and talking Cheese puns, big American dongs, and all of the Charles Bronsons. Plus Mike tries to remember who Craig Bierko is, pitches "Buddy Space Cops," and spills coffee all over the computer with horrifying results (thoughts and prayers). Also it's the first and last time we do Tim Allen corner. Come on you cool space babes, it's time to blast off!! "Name’s Charly, by the way. You’re gonna love me." When New Line Cinema bought Shane Black’s spec script “The Long Kiss Goodnight” in 1994 for $4 million, it created a new record for the selling price of spec scripts for more than 10 years until 2005 when Terry Rossio’s and Bill Marsilii’s script “Déjà Vu” sold for $5 million. While Black walked away with a hefty paycheck, he had no idea that this sale and the subsequent underwhelming performance of the resulting movie would have a hand in the end of the halcyon days of spec script sales. The way that studios saw screenwriters changed. The way they approached projects changed. Some say the industry has changed for the better, some say for the worse. Whichever side you fall on the issue, Black found himself struggling to get work afterward.  Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Shane Black series with Renny Harlin’s 1996 film “The Long Kiss Goodnight.” We talk about how much fun this movie is, particularly after our struggles with the last two in the series. We chat about Black and why the level of over-the-top fun in this script helps to elevate it in ways that didn’t quite work before. We chat about Harlin and what he brings to the table, not just here but in action and horror films through the late 80s and early 90s. We discuss Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Craig Bierko, Yvonne Zima, Brian Cox, David Morse and more, looking at how well they fit in this universe. And we look at how this film affected Black’s career, pushing him to step out of the industry for a decade.  It’s a joyously ridiculous romp that’s nothing but fun and we have a great time talking about it on this week’s show. Definitely check out this movie then tune in to the show. And I really enjoy the ones I’ve seen. With Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming remake of a remake, I’m just banking on the story I love to carry it through. Okay, I generally like Fuqua, and his cast looks pretty solid. I’m just not sold yet by this trailer. Or ‘teaser,’ I should say. I guess I’ll have to wait for the ‘full trailer’ to get a better sense of it." Pete's Trailer: The Founder — "Outside of MBA circles, I’m not sure how many people give the mechanics of McDonald’s much thought. But unravelling the sordid history of much lauded Ray Croc and the real estate empire he built is a story worth telling, and Keaton looks terrific in the part. Like last week though, what really gets me in this trailer is the song: Barns Courtney’s Glitter & Gold."

Whichever side you fall on the issue, Black found himself struggling to get work afterward.  Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Shane Black series with Renny Harlin's 1996 film “The Long Kiss Goodnight.” We talk about how much fun this movie is, particularly after our struggles with the last two in the series. We chat about Black and why the level of over-the-top fun in this script helps to elevate it in ways that didn't quite work before. And we look at how this film affected Black's career, pushing him to step out of the industry for a decade.  It's a joyously ridiculous romp that's nothing but fun and we have a great time talking about it on this week's show. Definitely check out this movie then tune in to the show. And I really enjoy the ones I've seen. With Antoine Fuqua's upcoming remake of a remake, I'm just banking on the story I love to carry it through. Okay, I generally like Fuqua, and his cast looks pretty solid. I'm just not sold yet by this trailer. Or ‘teaser,' I should say. I guess I'll have to wait for the ‘full trailer' to get a better sense of it." Pete's Trailer: The Founder — "Outside of MBA circles, I'm not sure how many people give the mechanics of McDonald's much thought. But unravelling the sordid history of much lauded Ray Croc and the real estate empire he built is a story worth telling, and Keaton looks terrific in the part. Like last week though, what really gets me in this trailer is the song: Barns Courtney's Glitter & Gold."

Hi-ho! This week's episode of HWYW starts off with a new Jenny McCarthy rant, then seamlessly segues into two great interviews. First up, it's fellow Scarsdale native PETER GROSZ, who joins Julie to discuss how great it is to hear from your rep that your friend has "buzz" or "heat," why the Cannibal Cop story was poorly timed, what Sonic has on its menu, and how weird it is that our parents are friends. Then, actor CRAIG BIERKO is here to tell us about auditioning for THE MUSIC MAN, loving The Monkees, keeping company with his dog, Boo, and why Matthew Perry is a tough act to follow. Plus: a Carmen Electra metaphor that will make you go "hmmm"! An observation about the new Best Week Ever! A new disturbing memoir recommendation! A sad story about a party in my apartment building! And a disgusting realization about Crocs and their Croc-holes. A delicious Valentine's Candy Heart of a show!

In this episode, I have the immense pleasure of chatting with the very hilarious Jimmy Pardo. A comedian often described as a "comic's comic" and the host of the immensely popular podcast "Never Not Funny," Jimmy is a guy who never fails to make me laugh. His podcast is the #2 podcast on iTunes hosted by a comic, after Ricky Gervais'. His television credits include: “Conan,” “That 70’s Show,” “Last Comic Standing” “Becker,” “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson,” “Monk,” “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” and his own half-hour special, "Comedy Central Presents Jimmy Pardo." You may have also seen him interviewing celebrities on Team Coco's web series, "The Pardo Patrol." We talk about everything from managing a record store in the 80's to writing bad jokes about tornados to his new web series "Write Now! with Jimmy Pardo," a joint production of Nerdist and Never Not Funny. It will come out on October 29 on the Nerdist YouTube channel. JIMMY PARDO'S BIO Jimmy Pardo is as funny talking to a stranger in an elevator as he is talking to a crowd from the comic stage. That's because everything he observes or thinks, he immediately scans to find the funny. And he always finds the funny. After Jimmy was told for like the thousandth time that he was even funnier offstage than he was onstage, he dropped most of the jokes from his act. Now he spends nearly his entire set interacting with, and making fun of, his audience. And they love it. Jimmy stands at the very center of the comedy world. That's not only because he's the ultimate "comic's comic," (as he's often called), but also because he represents where comedy is going, and everybody wants to come along. Jimmy's raucous-but-smart weekly podcast, "Never Not Funny," has revolutionized the way comedians use the internet to connect with their audiences. It's the No. 2 paid podcast hosted by a comedian, after Ricky Gervais's. His guest list reads like a Who's Who of comedy: Conan O'Brien, Adam Carolla, Kevin Pollack, and Sarah Silverman have all been guests. Actors Jon Hamm, Ty Burrell and Craig Bierko have appeared on several of the funniest episodes. "Never Not Funny" was voted by both iTunes and USA Today as one of the top podcasts of 2006 and 2007. It was an Editor's Pick in the September 2009 issue of Esquire magazine. In 2010, GQ magazine called the show "The Number 1 Relatively Obscure Thing You Need to Be Paying Attention To." The show, which started in Jimmy's dining room in 2006, now regularly hits the road with live tapings at festivals like SF Sketchfest, MaxFunCon, the Vancouver Comedy Festival and Bumbershoot. Twice, Jimmy and Co. have presented the "Pardcast-A-Thon," taping for up to 12 hours to raise money for The Smile Train. Besides the podcast, Jimmy continues to headline at some of America's top comedy clubs and currently works as Conan O'Brien's opening act on "Conan," getting the studio audience into a laughing mood before the show tapes (he did the same for Conan on "The Tonight Show"). A true multimedia talent, Jimmy has frequently appeared on television and in movies. He has performed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson." He had his own half-hour special, "Comedy Central Presents Jimmy Pardo." He hosted "National Lampoon's Funny Money" on the Game Show Network, and was the co-host of AMC's "Movies at Our House" for four seasons. He has hosted episodes of VH1's "The Surreal Life" and "Love Lounge" and NBC's "Late Friday." He's appeared on popular shows such as "Monk," "That 70s Show," and "Becker." And he has acted in independent films such as "Relative Strangers" and "The Godfather of Green Bay." Jimmy was the co-writer and star of the critically-acclaimed one-man show subtly titled "Attention Must Be Paid: The Jimmy Pardo Story" and a live pilot presentation, "Jimmy Pardo's Dance Party." He hosts monthly shows at the famed Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. He has recorded two comedy albums, "Uno" and "Pompous Clown."
