LAREDO, Texas - Legendary workforce development leader Blas Castañeda has been mentoring high school students for 49 years. The retired president of CTA Global Solutions will join with Area Health Education Center to hold his Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on March 27.This event recognizes the exceptional academic accomplishments of students participating in CTA's mentorship career development program. The ceremony takes place at Falcon Event Center, 7718 McPherson Road in Laredo, starting at 6:00 p.m. on March 27.“The mentorship career development program pairs experienced community leaders with high school seniors to provide career preparation, foster personal growth, and develop essential skills for university success. Through guidance, support, and networking opportunities, the program aims to assist students in successfully navigating the university admission and enrollment process,” said Blas Castañeda told the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service.“CTA Global Solutions and AHEC are committed to empowering the next generation of leaders by providing scholarships to deserving students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a dedication to their future careers,” Castañeda said.Castañeda became a well-known figure along the Texas-Mexico border when he chaired the Texas Border Coalition's education and workforce development committee. His career included more than three decades in the higher education realm as chief external affairs/economic development officer at Laredo Community College. Gov. Rick Perry appointed him to the Texas Workforce Investment Council. Gov. Ann Richards appointed him to the Texas Council on Workforce and Economic Competitiveness. He holds a Master's and Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Trade. His resume includes an eight-year tenure as Laredo city councilmember and he was an active member of the Eagle Ford Consortium Tri-Chair Workforce of South Texas. The Guardian secured an in-depth phone interview with Castañeda. The Guardian asked him why he started a mentoring program.“In the neighborhood where I grew up, barely anyone going to college. The whole reason for that was mom and dad didn't have the money to pay for the college. So that was one of the reasons. The other reason was, when I was growing up, everybody had to go work. We used to go up north and work every year for, oh, maybe close to 20 years, working in the fields picking tomatoes and corn and lettuce and cherries and even pick up cotton. So we there was a major inopportunity to go to school,” Castañeda said.Castañeda added: “Over the years I have helped tons of students get to university. Today, they're engineers, they're nurses, they're bankers, they've got their own business, all over the place. A lot of them are here in Laredo, but a lot of them went out, and they're in different parts of the country. So, I'm very happy that my 49 years of community service really paid off for a lot of people.”Here is an audio recording of the Guardian's in-depth interview with Castañeda:Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Topics Covered: ✅ Best Bar-B-Que Spots – During a lively discussion about the best Bar-B-Que spots, the consensus was clear—Texas is home to some of the best Bar-B-Que in the world. Many memorable places were mentioned: Truth Bar-B-Que in the Heights and in Brenham. As well as Merric Meat Company in Roundtop, TX. Franklin Barbecue in Austin tops the list with its legendary brisket, while Snow's BBQ in Lexington, helmed by the iconic pitmaster Tootsie Tomanetz, remains a Saturday morning pilgrimage for smoked meat lovers. One of Marcus' favorite spots is Tejas Bar-B-Que and Chocolate Factory, in Tomball, TX, as well as The County Line Bar-B-Que in Waller, TX. Governor Perry states: “Brisket and sausage – nothing else even gets close. Our Bar-B-Que is the best in the world.” But one thing is certain—Texans take their Bar-B-Que as seriously as their state pride. ✅ How Marcus & Governor Perry Met – A story of friendship, leadership, and shared purpose. ✅ Morgan Luttrell's Helicopter Crash – The harrowing experience of Marcus' twin brother, Navy SEAL Morgan Luttrell. ✅ Ibogaine Treatment – A step-by-step breakdown of this groundbreaking therapy for PTSD and TBI. ✅ Stanford Study on Ibogaine – The latest research and findings on this alternative treatment. ✅ Texas Ibogaine Initiative – Governor Perry's goals to bring this life-changing treatment to Texas. ✅ Marcus & Amber Capone's Mission – How they're saving lives by providing funding to help over 1,000 veterans seeking Ibogaine therapy. ✅ Unbelievable Survival Story – A former vet from the third Ranger Battalion had a jump accident where his parachute didn't open, leading to a TBI for 17 years — until he found hope with Ambio and Ibogaine treatment. Don't miss this powerful conversation about healing, resilience, and the future of treatment for our veterans. In This Episode You Will Hear: • I made that fateful statement: “Hey if you're ever through Austin, come by and see us.” Fat chance you're gonna get into the Governor's mansion, right? (10:48) • As we make progress on getting Ibogaine off of schedule 1 and through clinical trials, that facilities will have Ibogaine available to treat traumatic brain injuries. (21:14) • There is a way to regenerate the brain. (23:22) • If you don't want to quit, generally speaking, you're not gonna. (31:42) • Ibogaine. 1 treatment. Within 48 hours the desire is gone. The withdrawals – gone. (33:32) • Ibogaine is on schedule 1. Schedule 1 is addictive, and that is has no medical purpose. (35:56) • The best part about this is that you can't lie t it. (36:25) •  I tell people, “Be curious, lean into this.” (40:42) • I think there are a lot of people who are starting clinics. Go somewhere reputable. Do your homework. Make sure there's coaching before. (59:26) • We spend billions of dollars in this state to treat people who have mental health issues. (61:39) • There's no reason why the state legislature wouldn't go, you know what? We need to make this available. (64:57) • I think that use of Ibogaine is another one that could have a massively powerful, positive effect on this country – I think even in the world. (69:51) • For the naysayers and those who still are not believers, we're gonna prove it to you. Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture, Kip Tom, joins to share why farmers like him will benefit from the tariffs and what it will mean for the economy. Fentanyl is now considered the deadliest drug in American history, and President Trump's administration has levied tariffs on China in an effort to end ‘the mass invasion of fentanyl in our country.' Calling it a “national emergency,” the Trump administration says Chinese manufacturers are knowingly selling chemicals to further fentanyl production at our borders. In this video, I explore the emergence of the Texas Stock Exchange and its potential impact on the financial markets. The Texas Stock Exchange, announced in June 2023, plans to register with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, backed by BlackRock. Notable figures such as Rick Perry, former governor of Texas and U.S. Energy Secretary, and Rick Roberts, a former SEC commissioner, have joined its board of directors. The exchange has also attracted staff from Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange. We examine the exchange's progress toward a potential 2025 launch, including its secured funding of $135 million. I question whether this amount is sufficient to compete with established platforms like the NYSE, considering their vast resources and market presence. We discuss the implications of increased competition among stock exchanges and how it might benefit market participants by providing more choices and fostering innovation. Furthermore, I reflect on the possibility that the NYSE's consideration of extending trading hours to 22 hours a day could be a strategic response to the new Texas Stock Exchange. I encourage you to share your thoughts on this development and its potential effects on traders, investors, and the broader market.

Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values

The great fusionist project of ordered liberty advocated by Frank Meyer, William F. Buckley, and M. Stanton Evans is defended and affirmed today by a group calling themselves Freedom Conservatives, or FreeCons.  And as most groups of conservatives are wont to do, they have drafted a Statement of Principles outlining what they hope to affirm.  Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is a proud signatory on this statement and welcomes in this episode one of the two originators of the Statement, Avik Roy, for a wide-ranging discussion on fusionism, how FreeCons may compare and contrast with NatCons, the need for conservatism to grapple with issues of equality, and much more.   About Avik Roy Excerpts from https://bipartisanpolicy.org/person/avik-roy/   Avik Roy is the President of the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity (FREOPP.org), a non-partisan, non-profit think tank that conducts original research on expanding opportunity to those who least have it.  Roy's work has been praised widely on both the right and the left. National Review has called him one of the nation's “sharpest policy minds,” while the New York Times' Paul Krugman described him as man of “personal and moral courage.”   Roy has advised three presidential candidates on policy, including Marco Rubio, Rick Perry, and Mitt Romney.  Roy also serves as the Opinion Editor at Forbes, where he writes on politics and policy, and manages The Apothecary, the influential Forbes blog on health care policy and entitlement reform.  [He] is the author of How Medicaid Fails the Poor, published by Encounter Books in 2013, and Transcending Obamacare: A Patient-Centered Plan for Near-Universal Coverage and Permanent Fiscal Solvency, a second edition of which was published in 2016 by FREOPP.  He serves on the advisory board of the National Institute for Health Care Management, is a Senior Advisor to the Bipartisan Policy Center, and co-chaired the Fixing Veterans Health Care Policy Taskforce.   Roy's writing has also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Atlantic, National Review, The Weekly Standard, and National Affairs, among other publications.  He is a frequent guest on television news programs, including appearances on Fox News, Fox Business, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Bloomberg, CBS, PBS, and HBO.   From 2011 to 2016, Roy served as a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, where he conducted research on the Affordable Care Act, entitlement reform, universal coverage, international health systems, and FDA policy.  Previously, he served as an analyst and portfolio manager at Bain Capital, J.P. And that's not even mentioning U-Penn President Liz Magill's prior resignation over her anti-Semitic congressional testimony. But all isn't lost. Victoria Coates—U-Penn alum and former deputy national security advisor to President Donald Trump—is joining the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Free Speech Alliance to push back against the assault on freedom of expression on college campuses. Toward the goal of creating brave spaces for open dialogue, she led an in-depth conversation on contemporary national security issues ranging from Russia, to the CCP, and the conflict in the Middle East.  America's national security and the crisis in the Middle East What's happening at universities and how to restore freedom of speech and civility on campus. Pennsylvania's role in securing America's energy future and the danger posed by the Biden administration's sweeping new energy regulations.  Former deputy national security advisor to President Donald Trump, Victoria Coates is Vice President of the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation. With decades of experience as a national security advisor in Congress, federal agencies, and the White House, Coates leads the Davis Institute in designing and promoting policies that prioritize the security of American citizens while protecting our interests around the world. In 2007, Coates left academia to become the director of research in former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's personal office. Coates then joined then-Governor Rick Perry's primary campaign for president as senior advisor. In 2013, Coates became senior national security advisor for U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). In the Senate, Coates oversaw planning, strategy, and communications for Cruz's participation in writing the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).   When President Donald Trump was elected in 2016, Coates joined his transition team for the National Security Council staff, eventually becoming special assistant to the president and senior director for strategic communications. Coates assisted in establishing the NSC communication strategy, coordinated NSC policy related to the Middle East Peace Process, and supported the development of the December 2017 National Security Strategy. In 2019, Coates was promoted to Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, overseeing the Maximum Pressure Campaign against Iran and initiating the negotiations for the Abraham Accords. In early 2020, Coates transferred to the Department of Energy to advise Secretary Dan Brouillette on national security issues and act as his personal representative in the Middle East and North Africa. TRUMP MUST GO TO JAIL FOR IGNORING THE GAG ORDER - 4.19.24

SEASON 2 EPISODE 161: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Justice Juan Merchan MUST put Trump's ass in jail for violating the gag order - even if it's only one hour at Rikers Island. Trump is determined to break Merchan, break the New York Court, break the Criminal Justice System. He is a cornered and wounded animal and this is life-or-death for him. Think of a cockroach - only with thumbs. So it's him or us that gets broken, and Merchan has to make sure it isn't us. Trump tried to finesse the gag order by quoting somebody else – this worm Watters from Fox – denigrating the jurors and the judge and adding to the pile of stochastic inducements to violence against anyone who thwarts Trump. And by morning one of the jurors – the silhouette of their name and the vague depiction of their home – was quitting out of fear. Because what Trump sought by denigrating the jury WORKS. Because Trump's intimidation WORKS. Because Trump's terrorism WORKS. Prosecutors began Day 3 of the trial yesterday noting he had violated the gag order SEVEN times just since jury selection started and they actually UNDER-SOLD the most egregious of the violations, with Joshua Steinglass saying “the defendant reposted about liberals lying to try to get on the jury, a post by Jesse Watters.” That was NOT a re-post. Trump does dozens of re-posts a day. You hit a re-post icon, a couple of rounded arrows. Maybe you add a comment. Trump KNOWS what a re-post IS. That is NOT what Trump – or someone in control of the social media account bearing his name – DID. What Trump did was to make a NEW post, QUOTING Watters. It redd – and still reads:“They are catching undercover Liberal Activists lying to the Judge in order to get on the Trump Jury - Jesse Watters.” It is in Trump's own electronic hand. It is not a re-post. It is not ‘technically ok within the gag order' because Trump ISN'T lying about the judge and the jurors and endangering them all, he's just QUOTING Jesse Watters lying about the judge and the jurors and endangering them all. RUNNING THE HEADLINES: Derrick Van Orden, a walking PTSD demonstration, calls Matt Gaetz "tubby" and Marjorie Taylor Greene demands anybody who votes for Ukraine aid be conscripting into its military as the House Republican caucus comes apart at the seems. Happily Jared Moskowitz is there with the big yucks and a Rick Perry protege has the best idea yet: four Republicans should resign from the House to own the liberals. FOUR? How about FIVE? FIFTY? Think big be big my friend! And why on earth did Kari Lake devote a disturbingly large part of a campaign speech to repeatedly saying "strap-on?" B-Block (31:18) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Clay Travis goes from being the knight in shining armor defending the sanctity of women's sports from destruction by trans athletes, to insisting that Caitlin Clark isn't actually popular and nobody CARES about women's sports. The Charlotte GOP still hasn't realized it insulted Trump online and he'll see it eventually. And Twain was wrong: history DOES sometimes repeat itself. In 2005 I watched on in astonishment as Bo Dietl began his new MSNBC show by calling a gay reporter a "fudge-packer" and get fired within two weeks. Now, he's been fired for ANOTHER homophobic rant directed at ANOTHER reporter. Did you know Dietl's specialty in the NYPD was to serve as the mugging decoy? So he was mugged 500 times? Does it show? C-Block (48:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Snowie is fine - now - but her family could use a little help plowing through the bills for the medical wizardry that saved her life. (49:30) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: Appropriately enough, Thurber takes a dog who was alive when Teddy Roosevelt was president and makes him seem as new as the youngest pup. Don't run off and instigate an ugly, rancorous, and expensive primary against an incumbent Republican in order to modestly improve the candidate, and very possibly lose the seat.2) The only exception to Tip No. 1 is that you must destroy any elected Republican who pretends to be a Republican, but then tries to lose every single issue, across the board, by giving the Democrats 30 million new voters with amnesty.3)  Learn to rely on facts and don't get swept up in group-think slogans about “establishment Republicans.”  Otherwise, boy, will your face be red when you realize you were the one fighting for the establishment Republicans! (Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum and Paul Ryan--all of whom support amnesty).BONUS! Tips for Democrats:1)  Be sure your primaries include lots of candidates who will never be the nominee.  You don't want your base getting too focused on the actual purpose of the exercise.2) Hold 312 primary debates.  We Republicans find that lots of debates encourage attention-seekers and nuts to throw their hat in the ring.3)  Extend your primaries through July, or at least June, especially when running against an incumbent president.  It really keeps the nominee on his toes to have only three months to campaign against a candidate who's been campaigning for four years.

In this episode, Joe interviews Erik Vaughan: Co-Founder and Manager of Epiphany mushrooms, a mushroom and mental health company based in Akron, Ohio. Epiphany mushrooms will initially be selling Lion's Mane, Reishi, and Cordyceps, and they plan to expand into more functional mushrooms while also pursuing a license to operate healing centers in Colorado. Vaughan was involved in changing Colorado's psilocybin legislation after lobbying to add a section that allows product testing labs to register and charge for their services – while voluntary and complementary to required testing, it allows growers to have an unlimited amount of product for testing purposes; adds an extra step in keeping the grower and lab in compliance with state law; and, as more states work on their own legislation, highlights the need for potency testing to let customers know exactly what they're ingesting.  He discusses changing attitudes and how Michigan can lead the way for the midwest; why he's excited about Colorado and what they got right; the enthusiasm of the mycology crowd; Rick Perry's speech at Psychedelic Science 2023; the iron law of prohibition and mushroom products sold in Ohio; and the incredible inefficiency of the drug war (when viewed like it was not designed to do exactly what it's doing). Team Never Quit
Bringing Texas To San Diego w/ Former Gov. Rick Perry, Introducing Texas Tidbits & The Funny Story of How Marcus First Met Rick

Today, we bring an unconventional podcast to the Team Never Quit table. We are in San Diego and joining Marcus, Melanie, and Hunter is our favorite Texan, former Governor Rick Perry. Governor Perry brings an incredible knowledge of Texas history, which ties right in to Marcus' idea of adding a few minutes in each week's podcast to Texas Tidbits, where we talk about historical info, fun facts, Texas recommendations, food suggestions, Texas etiquette, etc. And who better to kick off Texas Tidbits than the longest serving governor in Texas history. We talk Texas Tidbits, and take a deep dive of the first time Marcus and the Governor met, exactly 17 years ago in San Diego. In this episode you will hear: • [Marcus] Longest serving governor in Texas history, then Secretary of Energy. (4:30) • Agriculture has an inordinate impact on me, as it does on the state of Texas. (12:08) • The greatest governor in Texas history. Nobody even comes in a close second, in my opinion – Sam Houston. (14:02) • [Sam Houston] could probably have been elected President of the United States, had he stayed in the race in 1860. And had he won, I don't think we would've had a civil war. (14:24) • [Sam Houston] brought Texas into the nation. (15:33)  • When he left his house, [Sam Houston's mother said to him: “And remember, my son, the door of the cottage will be forever open to a courageous man of honor, but it will be closed forever to a coward.” (16:22) • The second greatest governor, in my opinion – Dolph Briscoe. (18:41) • He [Dolph Briscoe] helped put into play the Farm to Market Road system, and helped put into place the Screwworm Eradication Program. (19:19) • Eisenhower put into place the Interstate Highway System. For every 5 miles, you have to have a straight 1mile piece of road. (22:42) • Governing's not hard: Don't overtax, don't over regulate, don't over litigate, and have a skilled workforce. (24:52)
