Car Con Carne
Chicago mayoral candidate Paul Vallas at Haymarket Pub & Brewery (Episode 788)

It's been said that you can't truly judge a politician's worth until you watch them being interviewed in a 10-year-old car while eating pizza.   Paul Vallas is the former CEO of Chicago Public Schools and former budget director for the city of Chicago. He ran for Illinois Governor and Lt. Governor, and most recently was a candidate in the 2019 Chicago mayoral election. And now, he's one of the top names circulating as a possible spoiler to a second Lightfoot term.   On this episode of Car Con Carne, Vallas joined me for a conversation outside Haymarket Pub & Brewery (737 W. Randolph, Chicago). We chatted as we tried Haymarket's new Detroit-style pizza (delicious, if not crunchy on-mic).   Vallas has a lot to say about why he thinks the February election will be wildly different from the last.    Topics covered: -Is Vallas a “closet Republican?” -Were COVID-related school closures necessary? -How can Chicago get businesses (and residents) back downtown? -How bad is the crime/violence issue, and how can it be tackled? -Is there corruption in City Hall? -How does Paul Vallas like his pizza?   Car Con Carne welcomes other mayoral candidates to eat in the car and talk about the 2023 election. Sure, the lighting is better on network news (and no one's chewing food on mic), but from what people tell me, podcasting is the audio media of the future.   __ Car Con Carne is sponsored by sopelsolar.com. Now is the time to go solar! Let former Blackhawk Brent Sopel guide you toward cost certainty, for nothing out of pocket!

For this episode, I'm joined by the fiercely talented Liv Warfield. Liv's a powerful solo artist who is perhaps best known as a member of Prince's backing band, New Power Generation (NPG).  We talked about her time and memories with Prince, what it meant to play last week's show at Paisley Park, and Liv's fantastic new live EP (Live at Cafe Wha?). See Liv Warfield at SPACE in Evanston on Tuesday 4/26/22!   As we chatted, we ate an awful lot of amazing food from Haymarket Pub and Brewery (737 W Randolph St, Chicago, IL 60661). That spicy pepperoni pizza was especially amazing. Thanks to the Haymarket team for the deliciousness and the hospitality!

While other kids were bringing turkey or bologna sandwiches to school, Boyede Sobitan was packing jollof rice with goat meat. Sobitan grew up in Uptown and suburban Dolton, and he remembers how difficult it was for his Nigerian mother to get the traditional ingredients she needed. Often it meant spending all day at specialty markets that were far from where they lived. That's why Sobitan and his business partner Fola Dada created OjaExpress, a delivery app for ethnic foods. Lead producer Carrie Shepherd talks with Sobitan about how it works and why having access to your cultural food is so important. Just two years ago, Rolling Stone named Emma White one of "10 New Country Stars to Watch." Now she's in my car with burgers from Haymarket Pub & Brewery (737 W. Randolph. I love everything about Haymarket. Great food. Great beer. In between performing on "Windy City Live" and hitting the stage at Haymarket, Emma and her band joined me for conversation Discussed: The challenges of navigating the music industry, particularly in Nashville. The fact that gender is still part of the industry's conversations. Emma likes the business aspect of being a musician. Emma starting her own record label. "I am a control freak." The song "That's Why I Drink." Would jumping into a stranger's car for a podcast and cheeseburgers be another reason? Does everyone from Nashville eat hot chicken? I sampled Haymarket's burger special for next Monday (12/9): It's a double burger with oyster mushrooms and blue cheese on a pretzel roll. It was so, so good. Get that, a 12 oz. beer and a shot for $15 on Monday! The public faces we wear, and how that ties into the title track of "The Actress" EP. What was her first performing experience? THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY "A MERRY PUNKING CHRISTMAS" AT REGGIE'S (SATURDAY 12/7), STARRING NERF HERDER!

Too bad he wasn't on roller skates. Katie's side hustle with the Smashing Pumpkins. Haymarket's Americana series is fantastic. Katie's superior EP, "Things That Break, Part 1." Maybe "straddling" isn't the best word choice. You have to build a protective force field when eating. Sweet potato tots make the world go round. Awkward poses are the only kind of poses I know. The song "Graceland" and Katie's relationship with American pop culture. Our view for the night? An open porta-potty. #blessed Everyone in Tennessee sounds like Katie Cole. Lilly pulled the ultimate power move by insisting on sitting in the driver's seat and making me sit in the passenger seat. The food menu at Haymarket. Lilly noted that my sandwich, The Riot, looked "very porky." It was, and it was amazing. We got the conversation about her dad, rock icon Steve Winwood, out of the way very early.
