On this week's episode, we're joined by Sarah Schlafly, the founder of *Mighty Cricket*, a company that's revolutionizing the food industry with products made from—you guessed it—cricket protein. Sarah is not only building a brand in an emerging industry but also tackling some of the biggest challenges in food sustainability and consumer perception.  Sarah found herself this week in the middle of President Trump's political agenda with the recent freeze on federal grant dollars—including $650,000 she had secured threw the USDA to grow her business—and how she's adapting to this unexpected hurdle**.  Additionally, we touch on her experience on the new Amazon game show “Buy It Now”, how she's overcoming the ‘ick factor' of an insect-based food source, building a direct-to-consumer brand, and navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship in a space that's still finding its footing.  From leadership lessons to her vision for the future of alternative protein, this episode is packed with insights for anyone interested in innovation, resilience, and thinking outside the box. Let's roll… **Please note, as of the release of this podcast on January 30, the federal government's freeze on funding has been rescinded. It doesn't change the impact and chaos created by the initial action, so Sarah's challenges and the unexpected online hate that has accompanied the freeze certainly remains valid and important. #proteinpowder # crickets #newtechnology #research #trumpfreeze #science

Give to help Chris continue making Truce The National Women's Conference was set to take place. State meetings were overrun by conservative women causing disruptions to the meetings as they paid the entrance fee with pennies or made noises during the discussions. But liberal women were not angels either. Some went so far as to accuse the conservatives of sending in mental patients to do their voting. It's easy in all of the noise to forget that this was a monumental meeting. Women from all over the country gathered together to discuss issues that impacted them. They ran the show. They set the agenda. Conservative women, by and large, didn't show up for the main meeting. Why? Because of conspiracy theories circulated by groups led by people like Phyllis Schlafly saying that the elections would be rigged. Also, they started their own conference across town. This pro-life, pro-family rally was only about three hours long. But it packed a big punch. People from all over the country took busses overnight to attend. They couldn't stay the night because hotels were already booked up for the main meeting. So they came and went on the same day, taking the pro-family, pro-life movement with them. In this episode, Chris winds up a three-part mini-series that takes us from Phyllis Schlafly's turn against the ERA to this momentous weekend in 1977. The fallout of the conference is still with us today as religious people on the right work together to accomplish their goals, often trying to undo what liberals on the far left have already done. Extremes continue to snipe at extremes as the middle tries to get things done. Our guest for this episode is Marjorie Spruill, author of the book Divided We Stand. It is an excellent resource that is balanced and well-notated. Sources: Divided We Stand by Marjorie Spruill Reaganland by Rick Perlstein Interviews from the National Women's Conference Phyllis Schlafly Report from December 1977 NBC's coverage of Phyllis Schlafly's funeral with Donald Trump's eulogy Discussion Questions: What were some positive outcomes of the National Women's Year conference? What were some challenges they faced? Why did conservatives feel shut out of the conference? What do you think about the role of conspiracy theories in conservative circles (example: Schlafly's insistence that the meeting votes were rigged)? Schlafly was overlooked in the Reagan administration. Why do you think that is? Why is it so hard for people of different beliefs to work together, even for the common good? What do you think would have happened if the IWY conference had not featured lesbian rights? Should it have avoided that controversial topic, or was it an issue whose moment had come? Give to help Chris continue the Truce Podcast. Phyllis Schalfly was a remarkable woman. Regardless of your politics, you have to admire the impact that one person, who was never elected to office, could have on national political conversations. Schlafly was already part of the in-crowd in Washington when she took a stance against the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). She was an exercise in nuance herself-- a woman who fought for traditional views of women in society, while also earning a law degree and touring the nation on speaking tours. She had a family and held a prominent position in the national zeitgeist, even building on battles fought by Anita Bryant. But who was Phyllis Schlafly? She was a Catholic woman, which is important because Catholics had long been the victims of prejudice in the United States. She was a mother, a popular speaker, publisher of The Phyllis Schlafly Report newsletter, and author of books like A Choice, Not An Echo, which was a conspiratorial screed about stealing elections. This lady knew how to turn a story. She ran for Congress in 1955 and again in 1970, losing both times. Then in 1972, she learned about the ERA. The Equal Rights Amendment was first proposed by Alice Paul in 1923. The goal was to have men and women treated equally under the law. That means that women would no longer receive special protections either. So... a double-edged sword, right? Women in the 1960s and 70s still had a ways to go when it came to equality. It brought forth some big questions about how to achieve it. Schlafly wanted to protect the protections. So she formed STOP ERA (Stop Taking Our Protections, ERA) to rally her followers against the ERA. This was a big twist because state after state had rushed to ratify the amendment. But once Phyllis got going, they applied the brakes and waited. Schlafly may have single-handedly stopped an Amendment to the Constitution. In this episode, we're going to learn about this dynamo. A woman who is both loved and hated. An intelligent woman, and someone who traded in falsities. Our guests for this episode are Marjorie Spruill, author of Divided We Stand and Angie Maxwell, author of The Long Southern Strategy. Are you an Esther, an Alice, or a Phyllis? The ERA is really short. Do you think it should be more specific to clarify its position? How have you seen sexism? How has it impacted your life? Have you seen women treated well in the workplace? What made the difference? Are stay-at-home mothers respected in our society? If not, what can you and your church do to support them? In the ever-evolving world of beer, maintaining a competitive edge can feel like navigating a stormy sea. Dan Kopman, former CEO of Heavy Seas and co-founder of Schlafly Beer, provides a seasoned perspective on the complexities and potential of the brewing industry."Early mover advantage is a double-edged sword," Kopman observes, a note of caution in his voice. "It's easy to gain but terribly difficult to maintain." This concept, familiar across various industries, holds particular resonance in the dynamic sphere of craft beer. Companies like Schlafly and Heavy Seas have ridden the initial waves of advantage, setting precedents in the market long before competitors caught wind. However, the real battle lies in sustaining that lead amid a burgeoning crowd of innovative brewers.Kopman's journey is marked by his significant roles in shaping the beer industry. Notably, he was instrumental in offering acclaimed beers like Young's Pubs' unique brews in London and Schlafly Beer in St. Louis. His broad experience fuels his understanding of the intricate dance between early adoption and lasting impact.Interestingly, the conversation isn't confined to traditional beer alone. Kopman acknowledges the rising influence of non-alcoholic (NA) beer, a niche that's garnering substantial attention. "Non-alcoholic beer has low penetration in the US compared to other regions," he notes. "But the global growth rate is in the high single digits." This trend suggests an emerging market ripe with possibilities for brewers willing to innovate and cater to changing consumer preferences.Kopman's insights also extend to broader demographic shifts and their impact on beer consumption. The interplay between immigration patterns and beer sales, for example, underscores the importance of understanding and addressing diverse consumer bases. "Brewers need to broaden their appeal," he advises, highlighting the necessity for cultural inclusivity in marketing strategies. Moreover, Kopman emphasizes the significance of strategic collaborations and experiential learning. At American University's Kogod School of Business, students engage in capstone projects that transition them into budding consultants. A notable collaboration with Right Proper Brewing Company in DC exemplifies how such partnerships can foster growth and innovation within the industry.Reflecting on market disruptions, Kopman draws a parallel between the beer industry and the tech world. "Consider the iPhone," he says. "It wasn't the first smartphone, but it achieved significant volume." Similarly, the NA beer market, while not new, holds potential for substantial growth and mainstream acceptance. In a rapidly changing market, staying ahead requires a blend of innovation, adaptability, and deep consumer understanding. For Dan Kopman, the journey through the beer landscape is as much about respecting tradition as it is about embracing the new waves of change. His experiences and insights offer valuable lessons for brewers and beer enthusiasts alike, navigating the ever-exciting and often tempestuous waters of the craft beer industry. What You Need to Know is Immigration May Be the Key to the Crazy Housing Market. Gen Z and Millennials find homeownership more of a dream now than a prospect. Josiah Lippincott at American Greatness writes this week that there may be two ways we can bring that down. Economists will tell you that you can lower costs in two ways: increasing supply or reducing demand. Perhaps we could reduce the incredible demand that 8 million additional immigrants (a 7% population bump) have put on the housing market thanks to Biden since 2021. It's an interesting analysis of the numbers and another problem that stems from an influx of illegal immigration.  Dr. Carole Lieberman is an author of 4 books, host of ‘Dr. Carole's Couch' and ‘Terrorist Therapist', and psychiatrist. She joins Ed to talk about ‘Terrorist-envy,' which has gripped the mind of Westerners. Terrorists are gaining physical and mental territory. Protests in America are siding with Hamas - why is this? Dr. Lieberman explains. John Schlafly, co-author of the weekly Schlafly report, joins Ed to discuss this week's column: ‘Federal Judges Side with Transgender Agenda.' On Tuesday a 2-1 Democrat majority of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit invalidated a West Virginia law protecting girls' sports against invasion by men pretending to be girls. John explains how this happened and why it matters. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King famously said, “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and . . . love without power is sentimental and anemic.” But many on the left seem allergic to power. This episode starts with a fundamental question: What is power?  Drawing on the influential sociologists Michael Mann and Erik Olin Wright, Stephanie and Deepak present a novel typology, identifying six forms of power and giving examples of each. Then we hear from a guest who has brilliantly analyzed right-wing strategies to build power over the past several decades: Ilyse Hogue, former president of NARAL Pro-Choice America and co-author, with Ellie Langford, of The Lie that Binds (which is also a terrific 6-part podcast). Hogue debunks the myth that the Supreme Court's 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade was the turning point in conservative organizing. In fact, she says the catalyst that activated a white, patriarchal, evangelical movement was Brown v. Board of Education, which challenged the power of churches in education. Hogue describes how in the 1970s, Phyllis Schlafly organized a mass movement to narrowly defeat the Equal Rights Amendment not, as many mistakenly believe, based on opposition to abortion but through scaremongering about women being drafted and being abandoned by husbands who would refuse to pay alimony. Schlafly's skill at recruiting footsoldiers made her a kingmaker for Ronald Reagan and, decades later, Donald Trump. Hogue concludes with an insightful analysis of the parallels between these two presidents, the lessons we can learn from right-wing successes and failures in amassing power, and the strategic opportunities the left can seize on today to widen fissures within the conservative coalition.

What You Need to Know is that gambling is a bad bet! It was not too long ago that the NFL would have stood adamantly against gambling on their games. But, the growth in the use of technology in the gambling world has now matched up with the money in the gambling industry, which led to an explosion of sports gambling lately. Casinos know how to target problem gamblers that are the victims of addiction, and this is not good or righteous business! Smartphone gambling apps have allowed this bad business to extend even further and become even more addictive. John Schlafly, co-author of the weekly Schlafly report, joins Ed to discuss this week's column: ‘Sports Gambling Addiction Invades Super Sunday.' John and Ed discuss how sports gambling has become widespread in recent years, and efforts to limit or ban sports gambling apps have not been successful. Going into the big game this Sunday, we are reminded how pervasive this issue has become. Grassroots are tremendously important for political change.  John J. She's had access to such luminaries as President Bill Clinton and the Washington Post's Kay Graham for her biographies of them, but her very first book was on the woman that seemed to split the country in half, Phyllis Schlafly. Schlafly is most notorious (or famous, depending) for nearly single-handedly stopping the Equal Rights Amendment from most certainly being ratified in my lifetime. How she did that -- and the fact that it is probably only her that could have done something like that -- is an issue in American Politics not many understand. Though it seems you have to at some point grapple with it. But Schlafly was sui generis in every rich nuance of the term. She was more comfortable debating detente with the Soviets and nuclear throw weights. She had a lot of kids, was a serious Catholic, and went to Law School in her fifties. She homeschooled all of her children up to a certain age, taught them all how to read herself, wrote books that were self-published and sold millions of copies, spoke all around the country, sometimes multiple times in one day, traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, and yet answered her own telephone. One could make the argument that she was the most important woman in American Politics in the latter half of the twentieth century -- perhaps the entire twentieth century. Is this real ? Her critics thought she was a phony. And she had millions of critics. My recent thoughts about this topic began in Scottsdale , Arizona, in 2023 at a used bookstore. In the section called "Conservativism," I found a copy of Carol Felsenthal's 1981 Doubleday biography of Schlafly . The book is called "The Sweetheart of the Silent Majority: The Biography of Phyllis Schalfly" by Carol Felsenthal. It began with a story that Schlafly gave her biographer the cold shoulder because of something very critical that Felsenthal had written about Schlafly years prior. Yet this copy had of all things Phyllis Schlafly's signature on it, inscribed for a couple , with best wishes. Now Schalfly had not signed most of the books she herself had written -- copies in the many, many millions. To think that she had signed this one written by someone whom she herself had dissed at some point for being highly critical. This, I had to see. So I reached out to Carol while reading it, and made the offer that she could easily refuse. But she didn't. And we ended up talking for 2 hours about Phyllis Schlafly and Carol's life as a biographer and a writer. Here's an example of the writing she has done for Chicago Magazine, a quite moving piece she did about her brother, an obituary of sorts, the man who had done the title sequences for such famous films as Superman (1978), Alien (1979), and The Untouchables (1987), who had recently died : https://www.chicagomag.com/arts-culture/June-2018/On-the-Life-and-Death-of-My-Brother-Dickie/ The Republican Professor is a pro-understanding-correctly-Phyllis Schlafly podcast. The boys drink and review a chai latte stout from Schlafly, then discuss out of dates ads. You've probably seen the headlines. The basic concept is "ads that are not acceptable today." But why are they unacceptable? In some cases, the old ad is playful, and we're too uptight to go along with the joke. In other cases, there were cultural assumptions in the past, or a different understanding of the science, that don't apply today. Does that make them offensive? Some of the ads are just plain creepy, but in some cases, the very act of finding something wrong with the ad seems to implicate the critic, not the ad. Overall, maybe we just get offended too easily these days.

Moxey was a homebrewer at the time. He was more than that, of course, but I first knew him as a homebrewer and a damn good one at that.  There would be parties and gatherings and bombers would be passed around and all of us, young ‘uns would talk about how beer could save the world – or at least make our worlds better.  Strangely enough a lot of folks in that group have gone on to work in and around beer, including opening their own breweries.  Moxey and his wife left New York for Missouri where he got a job at Schlafly, and then Perennial and now he's at Rockwell Beer Co. as the head brewer.  He's making tasty beer with soul, and it's always a pleasure when I get a can.  He's also an insightful and thoughtful guy. I saw him in person at the great American beer festival and over liters at Bierstadt Lagerhaus he got me thinking about beer in ways I hadn't in a long time.  So Moxey is here this week to share some of those thoughts and to keep the interest in beer flowing."-John Holl This Episode is Sponsored By:Pro BrewerWe bring original articles to ProBrewer.com twice a week covering issues important to the beer industry and aimed at helping breweries of all sizes understand different facets of the business.  Check out our articles on ProBrewer.com every Tuesday and Thursday and visit the site daily for other original content and to stay connected with the beer industry. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the ruling affirmed a half-century of political activism by conservative grassroots organizers, religious and legal groups, and Republican politicians and strategists. Few members of this right-wing coalition were more important than the late Phyllis Schlafly, who dedicated her formidable organizing and rhetorical talents to campaigns against cultural liberalism. In this episode, historian and Schlafly biographer Donald Critchlow discusses the crusader's legacy in light of the conservative movement's success in ending a constitutional right to an abortion. It is a timely reminder about the importance of persuasion in politics, because although young Americans have only known the Republican Party as monolithically opposed to abortion, it took decades of work by Schlafly and like-minded activists to push the GOP further to the right.
