Welcome to "Travel to Listen," a new Unpacked series hosted by veteran music journalist Tim Chester. Over four episodes rolling out every other week, Tim takes us into the cities where music is more than entertainment—it's the shortcut to a place's soul. This week, he heads to Minneapolis to hear how a community center, a cold climate, and a once-in-a-generation genius combined to create one of the most distinctive sounds in American music, plus how the city is celebrating a decade since Prince's passing. In this episode How the Minneapolis sound emerged from the Great Migration, housing segregation, rock radio, and a community center called The Way, where a teenage Prince jammed alongside Morris Day and Terry Lewis Why Paul Peterson (dubbed St. Paul by Prince himself) believes the Minneapolis sound is joyous, funky, and built to last, and how his supergroup, the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars, is carrying it forward The story of historian Kristen Zschomler: how grief over Prince's death led her to track 50+ locations across Minneapolis where he lived, worked, and recorded, and her ongoing mission to get them on the National Register of Historic Places What Prince mastered at his childhood home in North Minneapolis. Plus, why Sound 80, the studio where he cut his first demo tapes at 19, was the launchpad for everything that followed How to experience Minneapolis in 2026: from Paisley Park to First Avenue, Bunkers Music Bar to the Dakota, and the five-day Prince Celebration festival in June marking the 10th anniversary of Prince's death Meet this week's guests Paul Peterson is a musician, songwriter, and former Prince collaborator, dubbed "St. Paul" by the Purple One himself. He was a member of The Time and The Family, appeared in Purple Rain, and is now the leader of the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars, an all-star alumni supergroup dedicated to keeping the Minneapolis sound alive. Kristen Zschomler is a historian and co-founder of the International Center 4 Prince Studies. She gives guided tours of Prince's Minneapolis and created Sound Around Tours, a self-guided audio tour app. She has researched and documented over 50 locations tied to Prince's life and work, and has successfully advocated for two of them to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. Guest host Tim Chester is a freelance travel and culture writer who has spent the past 20 years exploring the world through the lens of music. His reporting has appeared in NME, Spin, and Afar, and his travels have taken him from Manhattan to Malawi and Beijing to Berlin in search of the festivals, scenes, and stories that reveal a city's soul.

In this very special Mother's Day Episode, I am joined by two creative powerhouses, Lynn Whitfield and Grace Gibson. Lynn Whitfield is an award-winning and internationally recognized actress with a career spanning decades. Her incredible artistry has consistently championed the experiences of complicated and powerful women whose stories deserved to be told with the depth and care that only Lynn could provide. Grace Gibson is a Rock 'n' Roll artist forging her own distinct path in the music industry. Grace has had the privilege of gracing stages at Paisley Park and the Apollo Theater with her incredible voice and unique approach to rock. During our conversation, we discussed what it was like for both women to grow up in a family with such strong beauty and creative aesthetic sensibilities. And how they have relied on each other in their pursuit of greatness in their respective careers.Lynn detailed how her mother and aunts provided her earliest expressions of beauty in Louisiana. We learned about how attending Howard University and being exposed to the Black art scene upended her initially conservative approach to self-expression, and how it challenged what her mother had taught her. Of course, Grace details what it was like to grow up with a mother who is well known for being glamorous, on and offscreen. The pair offered a beautiful look inside their relationship and how they have cultivated a friendship that many mothers and daughters would love to have. In fact, Lynn gushes when she explains that having Grace inspired a more ambitious approach to her personal and professional pursuits. As an ambitious working mother, Lynn talked about the women who modeled the mother-daughter relationship she could have as a successful actress. Grace credits Lynn with showing her the result of true artistic commitment and demanding that she pursue her artistic dream with complete seriousness. Grace and Lynn offer a beautiful example of what it means to lead by creative example and live a life filled with love.Tune in as we discuss:(5:35) Lynn and Grace's Introduction To Beauty(13:45) Lynn's Experience In A Freshly Integrated High School (33:35) Behind The Scenes of The Josephine Baker Story Filming (40:55) Why Grace Didn't Watch The Josephine Baker Story Until College(43:55) Lynn's Parents Weren't Supportive of Her Creative Careers, Despite Inspiring It(55:15) Why They Are Best Friends(57:20) On Being A Busy Working Mother (58:45) How Josephine Premice and Her Daughter Susan Fales-Hill Supported Her(1:05:00) Helping Your Children Understand Their Mixed-Race Identity(1:06:20) How Lynn's Radical Honesty and Work Ethic Inspire Grace(1:11:45) Their Favorite Beauty Products and Services(1:20:00) When They Feel The Most BeautifulRate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on AppleJoin the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanetShop My Favorite Products & Pod Discounts on my ShopMyShelfStay in touch with me: @brookedevardFollow Lynn @mslynnwhitfieldFollow Grace @thegracegibson Hosted on Acast. It's hard to believe, but it's been 10 years since the death of Minnesota's most beloved cultural icon, Prince. Just before 10 the morning of April 21st, 2016, he was found unresponsive at his studios in Paisley Park after a fentanyl overdose. He was 57 years old. As the world processed the news, fans assembled outside Paisley Park and First Avenue. The downtown Minneapolis nightclub later became the scene of an all-night dance party to honor the artist. Music journalist Andrea Swensson, formerly of The Current, was both at Paisley Park and First Avenue, helping share his legacy with the world. Andrea went on to write a book about Prince. She also hosted the official Prince podcast. She joined Minnesota Now host Nina Moini to reflect on Prince's life and legacy.

Send us Fan MailThis week on When Doves Podcast, Jared and Ed get down and way too funky as they dive headfirst into Prince's legendary “chicken grease” scratch guitar style — the tight, percussive magic that makes your shoulders move before your brain even clocks what's happening. They start by tipping the hat to the OG architects of the groove, breaking down the genius of Jimmy Nolen and Freddie Stone, the unsung heroes who turned rhythm guitar into a full-on rhythmic weapon. Then it's off to Paisley Park (spiritually, at least) as they track how Prince took that foundation and, across his first eight albums, refined it into something unmistakably his own — sharp, sexy, and impossibly precise.Along the way, there's plenty of “wait, did you hear THAT?” moments, a lot of stank-face reactions, and a full-on celebration of the Purple One's funkiest instincts. The episode wraps with the guys' top 5 Prince tracks where that chicken grease is front and center.Strap in. It's nerdy, it's greasy, it's deeply funky.
In this miniepisode, Kirk went to Minnesota.
In this 2012 archive interview, Gary Hines—founder and musical director of Sounds of Blackness—joins Joe Kelley to discuss the group's NAACP Image Award win, their global musical vision, and deep ties to the Minneapolis sound.Gary shares stories involving Stevie Wonder, Paisley Park, Prince's creative community, and the evolution of Sounds of Blackness across four decades. A powerful conversation on legacy, leadership, and Black musical excellence.

Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.
We launched Gorman in the Morning with Fletcher and Ryder, diving into the Crew's first concerts, first ever album purchases and first time getting to sit front row for Prince at Paisley Park (just Steve on that one). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us a textWe're going back to 2020 with this episode. Well before The Movie Loft Podcast was available on any streaming platform. As I've mentioned before, we have a whole unreleased first season in the back of our vault. It may not rival the Paisley Park archives, but there are obviously some uncut gems in there. And No Retreat, No Surrender is one of them. A 1986 classic featuring JCVD 1.0. I was truly shocked to find this in there. Trust me when I tell you that there are some unreleasable episodes. We were feeling our way to the middling road we find ourselves on today, and it wasn't pretty. So how does this one feel so current!? We had it! Then we lost it. When we found it again, I guess we knew it was time to launch the zeppelin. How in the world I got Tony and Phil to discuss so earnestly a movie they despised, I was made for this...at least this movie.
In this episode, the gang discusses the Super Bowl LIX halftime show featuring Kendrick Lamar, recent weddings, Prince/Paisley Park, and an update to the Catherine Griffith case covered in episode 26. Kim finishes out the episode by telling us about the enigmatic case of the Peak Family Murders in Grand Island, NE.Sources:https://www.pinow.com/articles/471/investigators-stumped-over-1972-killings?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR33I3Ao1JyV_TEcABAwdVNYxCB27XZ4Kh-EPJ2ClGpxorBiKj8ghgWUOV8_aem_V8oObhYTb-GD1t_bzpwsEwhttps://nebraska.tv/archive/cold-case-bob-allen-offers-100000-in-1972-murdershttps://gunmemorial.org/1972/09/09/bernice-beenie-peakhttps://gunmemorial.org/1972/09/09/william-oliver-peak-iiihttps://gunmemorial.org/1972/09/09/barbara-peakhttps://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/55lmiv/death_of_the_grand_island_peaks/https://uncovered.com/states/nebraska-cold-cases
