The Transition Movement is a worldwide network of people working locally to move away from fossil fuel-base infrastructure toward locally-based systems. Projects include community-owned renewable energy utilities, local food security projects and farmers markets, local currencies, conversions of lawns into edible landscapes, waste reduction, ecosystem restoration, social entrepreneurship—all things that cultivate resilient and healthy communities. Don Hall, long-time leader in the Transition Towns movement, with a background in permaculture and organic farming, is author of the new book, The Regeneration Handbook: Transform Yourself to Transform the World. In the podcast he talks about some of the many successful projects of the movement, as well as the stages of development inherent in movement-building and social change.

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - CityWest's internet service for Cortes Island was cut off again, sometime after 10:44 on Saturday, March 8, and not restored until after 9:00 on Monday, March 10. This is the third or fourth time in the last 12 months. The outage did not affect CKTZ, which relies upon Mascon de TELUS, but did shut down numerous CityWest customers (including Cortes Currents). ‘Rumour' has it that the fibre cable was cut somewhere on the underwater stretch between Denman Island and Williams Beach.  “They require a special "marine team" to take care of it and it will be weather dependent. Hopefully the break will be near shore, but they may have to pull up the entire length of cable to find the break and fix it.” One of CityWest's public relations people confirmed there was a break in the cable, but could not say where. However the recorded announcement on their phone in line stated:  “We are seeing services affected in Williams Beach, Stories Beach, Manson's Landing, Bold Point, Heriot Bay, Whaletown, Open Bay, Granite Bay, Chatham Point, Blink Channel, Bliss Landing, Seaford, Klahoose, and Gillies Bay.” So the rumour was true, at least in regard to where the break occured. There are some questions about CityWest's recorded announcement. For starters, it says services are affected in Bold Point, Open Bay, Granite Bay and Heriot Bay - which are all Quadra Island locations. Only Regional Director Robyn Mawhinney, who lives on Quadra, has yet to hear of ANYONE being connected on Quadra Island and, up until this point, there has been no mention of Heriot Bay being served. A number of Cortes Island residents have been connected for over a year, but a lot of people have not. It is not clear which group is in the majority. In a previous post, Cortes Currents mentioned that numerous households in Squirrel Cove, Whaletown and Mansons Landing have yet to be connected. Since then, a source who wishes to remain anonyomous, claims that service has yet to be brought to Seaford Road. Don Hall, from Tiber Bay, recently stated there is no service in his area either. “We expressed interest early on to get hooked up. They used to phone us and they used to try to sell us things. They ran a line from our local road to our house, but they never ran the line from the main fiber optic network into where we live at Tiber Bay. They never hooked up our house either. The last time I ever heard anything from them was three years ago when they scheduled an appointment to hook up the internal to our house. They never showed up for that and we never heard from them again.” The Strathcona Regional District has not been talking about the connected coast project very much lately, but according to the press release on their website, this is “a joint venture between the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) and CityWest" which “will be managed and implemented by CityWest and the Strathcona Regional District.”

After 8 years of interviewing people in the regeneration sector, It's become clear to me that knowledge is not as valuable as experience. Gathering facts, concepts and theories is great up to a point, but until you put those ideas into practice, it's impossible to know if those ideas clash with your reality, or require adaptation to what's really going on on the ground. For this reason I was excited to see that Don Hall, who has worked with the transition towns movement in various capacities for 16 years now, has come out with a new book titled, The Regeneration Handbook: Transform Yourself to Transform the World. Don also holds a Master's in Environmental Leadership from Naropa University, a certification in Permaculture Design from the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute and is currently the Training Coordinator for Transition Network. You can find accounts of much of his work and learnings at his website and blog at evolutionary change.org In this episode a lot of what we explore revolves around the International Transition Network, how it started, and how it's grown to a movement since the early 2000s. We go into Don's practical experience building the transition movement in both Colorado and Florida, some of the shared priorities of those communities that formed the basis of initiatives and unity that was formed, and how others can participate in creating these kinds of programs in their own communities. We also get into related topics like how transition is as much an internal process as an external community one, and the skills that Don believes we need to relearn in order to live in close knit communities the way that almost everyone used to in recent history.

The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

Mele Kalikimaka as the ThawedCast covers 'Moana,' the monumental 2016 film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, directed by longtime Disney Animation dynamic duo John Musker and Ron Clements, and co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. Bridget, Lara and Philip revisit the mythical ancient Polynesian world of Moana of Motunui (Auli'i Cravalho) and her adventures with the demigod Maui (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Moana--a princess of sorts as the daughter of the chief--is faced with inheriting the leadership of an insular island nation that has abandoned its seafaring roots. However, she must learn to sail in order to restore the Heart of Te Fiti, a magical relic bestowed on her by the ocean. Failing in her mission would doom her island to a growing famine. Guided by her grandmother's spirit and the power of the ocean, she first seeks out the aid of the shapeshifter Maui. He reluctantly agrees to accompany her, first to retrieve his magical fishhook, and then to potentially face the perils posed by the demon Te Kā, who has corrupted the influence of the nature goddess Te Fiti. We're covering the Disney seafaring animated classic(?) Moana, its themes of ancestry, forgiveness, and restorative justice, where it ranks among other classics when it comes to songs, sidekicks, and more, and discovering that we, too, are Moana.   Moana (also known as Vaiana or Oceania in some markets) is a 2016 American computer-animated musical fantasy action-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 56th Disney animated feature film, it was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, co-directed by Chris Williams and Don Hall, and produced by Osnat Shurer, from a screenplay written by Jared Bush, and a story by Clements, Musker, Williams, Hall, Pamela Ribon, and the writing team of Aaron and Jordan Kandell. The film introduces Auliʻi Cravalho as the voice of Moana and also features the ensemble voices of Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk. It features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina, and an orchestral score also composed by Mancina. Set in ancient Polynesia, the film tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a coastal village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people. The plot is original, but takes inspiration from Polynesian myths.

Skwigly.com presents Animation One-To-Ones featuring Ryan Gaur in conversation with Roy Conli, producer of Disney Animation's Strange World. Strange World follows a family of historically great explorers, the Cades. The film focuses on three generations of men in the family. Jaeger Clade mistakenly abandoned his son, Searcher, after his lust for adventure sees him transported to the titular Strange World. Searcher himself feels a certain distance from his son, Ethan, whose interests and personality highlight the generational differences between the two. After the entire family are thrown into the pink-tinted Strange World populated by exotic animals and unknown threats, the three generations of fathers and sons are forced to find some common ground. The Oscar-winning collaboration of director Don Hall and producer Roy Conli returns after their success on Big Hero 6. Penning the script is Qui Nguyen who also has previous with Don Hall following their work on Raya and the Last Dragon. Fittingly for the themes of the film, Strange World keeps it within the established Disney family.

It's Monday and we have a great week in the works! Today we cover the auto advertisers who are swooning back to the live viewership. We also meet Rivian's Chief Lobbyist and get into the WSJ comments section, as well as the impact of the much awaited ‘merge' for the crypto currency Ethereum. Football is back and so are Automotive advertisers as spending jumped over 260% from the week prior according to iSpot.tv data from $6.6M to $23.8M. 75% was allocated to NFL GamesHonda and Nissan grabbed the #1 and #2 spots with Honda dropping $8.1M on it's “Forever Determined” 30 sec spot Nissan's “60 years in 30 seconds” spot was targeted to college gamesHyundai, Chevrolet, and GMC were also on the field with new commercialsHyundai's 60 second “Chewy” was the fan favoriteThe Chief Lobbyist at Rivian, Jim Chen, is a former Tesla exec, wears cowboy boots, and is making it his mission to end the traditional model of selling cars. Fascinating story of “the wonky lawyer who produces evidence for his views and talks a lot about free market principles” Cites local Dealers power at the state level as the reason for the difficulty in establishing the D2C model“When you have one person who controls all the marbles, you get marbles when they want to give it to you,” said Don Hall, president of the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association. Mike Stanton, the president of the National Automobile Dealers Association, added that “there are rules in place for a reason.”$5.5B loss for 2022 while delivering 5700 units. Loss of $96,491 per vehicleThe COMMENTS:"Dealers and state lawmakers who oppose Mr. Chen's efforts say that independent dealerships play a critical role in the car-buying process, helping to create competition between franchises that ultimately keeps prices affordable for consumers. They argue that dealers also provide important services, such as repair and warranty work, and arrange financing for buyers at competitive rates."How can those arguments be proffered with a straight face?  Do they really think we are that gullible to believe that online sales would enhance competition by letting customers shop around. Ask anyone who has a brain if they'd rather be able to avoid trips to a showroom, and if they also think that they'd get better financing deals online.  Ridiculously anti-consumer."Auto dealers have been a fixture of American life since the early part of the 20th century, when auto makers first needed retail networks capable of selling large volumes of cars. Independent dealers did the hard and expensive work of finding customers, advertising in specific markets and servicing. " That's the same argument that the weavers' guilds made centuries ago when the loom was invented. Give me a break.

Don Hall is a trainer and facilitator with TransitionUS, the US hub with the global Transition Network. He is a permaculturalist and former Executive Director of Transition Sarasota. Don recently joined us on The Regenerative Real Estate Podcast to talk about his life's work and the Transition Network's playbook called Five Stages of Transition. If you're not familiar with Transition or Transition Towns, it is a movement that has been growing since 2005 across the globe. Community-led Transition groups focus on a low-carbon, socially just future with resilient communities, and active participation in society. In practice, they are using participatory methods to imagine the changes we need, setting up renewable energy projects, re-localizing food systems, and creating community and green spaces.  They are nurturing the Inner Transition of the cultural and mindset changes that support social and environmental change.  They are sparking entrepreneurship, working with municipalities, building community connection and care, repairing and re-skilling. The community level of scale has huge potential to influence change and is a crucial part of developing and guiding social and economic systems toward sustainability, social justice and equity. There is an increasing recognition that top-down approaches are not sufficient alone to affect change and need to be combined with community-level responses.  It's an approach that has spread now to over 48 countries, in thousands of groups: in towns, villages, cities, Universities, schools.  Around the world, there are 23 Transition Hubs that support and connect Transition groups in their country/region and connect internationally.

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are taking our time, letting the candle wax run as we explore the warning; be careful what you wish for. I'm sure you've thought about it before, if I could have anything, what would I wish for? You might have even played the game when you were young, three wishes. Some of you might have chosen simply, for the moment and others of you might have taken your time, savoring each wish and thinking of an all-encompassing answer. “I wish for unlimited wishes”. But how many of you thought of the after wish. You know that time after the wish has been granted. What now? How do you live with your choice? How do you manage the gift? Sometimes it's not as simple as granting you what you want but instead, there could be strings attached or conditions. What if it weren't that simple and instead, every wish led to an extended responsibility. Maybe instead of wishing you find contentment where you are and with what you have. Intriguing? Maybe, let's dig in and see. I recently read a book, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. In the story, the main character, Adeline is desperately trying to get out of an arranged marriage at the end of the 17th century in France. She has befriended a lady of the woods who taught her to pray to many other gods besides the religious God her parents worshiped. She warned her never to pray at night because the God of the night wasn't a good god but an evil one. Unfortunately, that is just what happened. In her desperation to escape and not be owned by anyone, she made a deal with the devil. She could live forever, independently but when surrendered, her soul would be his.  She was 23 at the time of the deal and she would be 23 for centuries. Sounds amazing huh? Never growing old and bonus, she could never die which meant, any injury or accident was immediately rectified.  BUT you didn't think the devil would make it that rich did you? Now the conditions. Why couldn't she be owned or controlled by anyone? Because as soon as she left their sight, even exiting a room, she was immediately forgotten. She wasn't allowed to say her name or make a mark in any way on this world. Think about that? She couldn't get a job, rent a room, have a friend, or make a home. She couldn't build on more than the first meeting with anyone. No one remembered her. Let that sink in for a minute.  What if no one remembered you or what you did? I think we've all wished for eternal youth but imagine if this were the consequence? Don Hall gives us another example to set the stage: Monkey's Paw Wishes and the Consequences of Want found at literateape.com Mike Fishbein helps us understand The Happiness Trap: Why You're Never Satisfied and How to Break the Cycle found at medium.com At aconsiousrethink.com I found 6 Sad Reasons Why You Are Never Satisfied In Life (+ How To Be) I want to leave you with 4 Inspiring Messages from The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue CHALLENGE: count your lucky stars and find gratitude in the life you have. This monster can be a prejudice, fear, insecurity, trauma and so on. We believe that romance novels are as much about one's personal journey as they are about finding love. After all, love makes us vulnerable and forces us to bare our monsters to another.
