Laurie Anne Helgoe is an American psychologist and author of Introvert Power: Why Your Inner Life Is Your Hidden Strength. She specializes in personality development and the psychology of desire. In 2008, her writing revealed that scholarly and popular accounts regarding humans who display the personality traits of introversion and extroversion were flawed. Instead of representing a 25-30% of the population, introverts make up 57% of the population. In this interview, we are going to talk about: How to identify whether you are an introvert or not, what can introverts and extroverts learn from each other, why western cultures highly value extroverted qualities, and how to “meditate in the middle of the mosh pit.” Some questions I ask: (02:19) What is introversion? How can someone know whether they are an introvert or not? (10:42) What can we do to meditate in the middle of the mosh pit? (18:53) What do you think introverts and extroverts have to learn from each other? (27:02) How can you know when you have had too much external stimuli and what can you do?

Even before Donald Trump entered America’s highest office, an international survey revealed that narcissism is part of the assumed “national character” of Americans. In her book “Fragile Bully: Understanding Our Destructive Affair With Narcissism in the Age of Trump,” psychologist Dr. Laurie Helgoe looks beyond the sound bites of self-aggrandizing celebrities and selfish tweets to the real problem of narcissism. Join us for a conversation with Dr. Laurie Helgoe about our national love affair with powerful narcissists in this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI.
Psychologist Laurie Helgoe's new book is called "Fragile Bully: Understanding our Destructive Affair with Narcissism in the Age of Trump." In her book, Dr. Helgoe explains how narcissism can be manifested in many different ways- how all of us have some degree of narcissism in our personalities, and how at least a little bit of narcissism is a healthy and necessary thing- and the many ways in which narcissism can become a terrible problem. She even explores the notion of Collective Narcissism, in which narcissistic tendencies are not just felt and expressed by individuals- but also by large groups of people.
When a word or phrase rises to prominence in the collective conversation, there’s a danger of it becoming diluted or distorted so much that it strays from its original meaning. That’s happening now with the word “narcissist.” Everyone from the arrogant boss to the selfie-loving teenager becomes a narcissist. The truth is, we all have a touch of narcissist in us, but not everyone deserves that label. Our questions this episode: what’s the true definition, and how do we interact with people who sit at different places on the spectrum? I’m pleased to be welcoming Dr. Laurie Helgoe back to the podcast for a continuation of our episode 2 conversation about narcissists and bullies. In this episode, we dive a bit deeper into the nuances of narcissistic traits, including how to take care of yourself when talking with a narcissist and how narcissism shows up individually and collectively.
