In episode 87, Kathryn and Theresa dive into the Critical Response Process (CRP) with Mallory Alekna, Assistant Professor of Music, Human Development, and Learning at Augsburg University. Mallory shares how this four-step feedback framework, developed by choreographer Liz Lerman, can transform music classrooms by fostering meaningful dialogue and empowering students to take ownership of their learning. Through CRP, students learn to articulate their observations, ask thoughtful questions, and engage in constructive, permission-based feedback. By integrating this process into music education, teachers can create more equitable, student-centered environments that encourage creativity, agency, and collaborative learning.Music teachers will leave this episode with practical strategies for implementing CRP in their classrooms, whether through peer feedback on student compositions, discussions about performance techniques, or even broader conversations about musicianship as an ongoing journey. If you're looking for ways to shift from a traditional top-down approach to one where students feel truly heard and valued, this episode is packed with insights and actionable takeaways to help you get started.Connect with Mallory and learn more: Contact MalloryLearn about the Critical Response Process Connect with an Expert Facilitator More about Pass the Baton:Website Join the Coffee Club Support Pass the Baton Amplify student voice with Exit Tickets for Self Reflection

A recent Pew Research study shows that religious “nones” are the largest single group in the United States. Twenty-eight percent of Americans check the box “none” when asked about their religious affiliation. The decline of religious life in America is not new. More than 40 million Americans have left religious life behind in the past 25 years. The reasons for that decline are complicated. In a new series, Faith in Minnesota, we'll talk to faith leaders across the state about what people are turning to instead, if anything.Chris Stedman spends a lot of his time thinking about people who check “none” box. He's a professor of religion and philosophy at Augsburg University and is working on a book that takes a look at religious “nones.”

Nonviolence and a Needed Revival of Humanity and Moral Clarity Learning not to hate those with whom we disagree is a profound lesson in cultivating empathy and understanding. Often, violence and hate stem from a sense of feeling devalued or misunderstood. Embracing the idea that everyone's perspective is shaped by unique experiences can foster compassion and bridge the gaps that divide us. In the Christian faith, there is a powerful call to love one's neighbor and even one's enemies. This ethos encourages believers to rise above animosity, recognizing the inherent dignity in each person. A genuine adherence to Christian principles can lead to a revival of humanity, emphasizing love, forgiveness, and moral clarity. By embodying these values, individuals can contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate world, transcending the divisive forces of hatred and violence.  I'm joined in this episode by my fellow Braver Angels Harry Boyte and Marie Ström to discuss nonviolence and a needed revival of humanity and moral clarity.Who are  Harry Boyte and Marie Ström?Harry C. Boyte is a co-founder of the Institute for Public Life and Work and Senior Scholar of Public Work Philosophy at the Institute and also at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN.  He founded and for 20 years directed and co-directed the Center for Democracy and Citizenship (CDC) at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs. As a young man he worked in the citizenship schools sponsored by SCLC, Martin Luther King's organization.Marie-Louise Ström is a co-founder of the Institute for Public Life and Work. Originally from South Africa, for 20 years she managed democracy education work at the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (Idasa), the major independent democracy building organization in Africa. In 2001, as an international fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, Ström became acquainted with the Public Work approach of the Center for Democracy and Citizenship. She adopted this approach in citizen leadership training programs across the continent of Africa, working with professionals from diverse backgrounds as well as grassroots leaders.Learn more about and connect with Harry & Marie online:website: https://www.iplw.org/What have you done today to make your life a better life? Throughout his career, activist, organizer, educator, and author Harry Boyte. has asked a simple, but obviously challenging question: How can we make democracy an everyday practice for everyone? Given the warnings about the end of democracy, our discussion about role of culture in the labor and civil rights movements, and the inseparable nature of imagination and democracy is timely, to say the least. BIOHarry C. Boyte is a co-founder with Marie Ström of the Public Work Academy and Senior Scholar of Public Work Philosophy, both at Augsburg University. He also founded the international youth civic education initiative Public Achievement and the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the University of Minnesota, now merged into the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg University. Boyte's forthcoming book, Awakening Democracy through Public Work, Vanderbilt University Press 2018, recounts lessons from more than 25 years of revitalizing the civic purposes of K-12, higher education, professions, and other settings. In the 1960s, Boyte was a Field Secretary for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the organization headed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and subsequently was a community and labor organizer in the South. Boyte has authored ten other books on democracy, citizenship, and community organizing and his articles and essays have appeared in more than 150 publications including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Political Theory, Chronicle of Higher Education, Policy Review, Dissent, and the Nation. What would Jane Addams have to say about philanthropy in the twenty-first century?

For some time now, I have been contemplating what early twentieth-century activist and reformer Jane Addams would have to say to those of us who are asking tough questions about philanthropy. In short, I believe she would ask whether our work reflects a commitment to strengthening democracy, creating proximity among the haves and the have nots, and exemplifying what it means to be a citizen rather than a mere consumer. While I believe Addams would sympathize with many of the critiques that are being thrown at philanthropy today; I also believe she would encourage us all to be hyper-diligent in understanding what appropriate expectations we should have of it.For those who are not familiar with Jane Addams and her views on philanthropy, she was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, co-founder of the ACLU, and co-founder of Chicago's Hull House. Addams' views on philanthropy afford us a contrast to Andrew Carnegie's “responsibilities of wealth” and the notion that giving away money is hard work. Author Louise Knight explains that Addams was far more concerned about the “responsibilities of being human” and believed philanthropy should create space for interacting directly, making sense of each other's burdens, and working together to address social issues. Before the holidays, I had the pleasure of recording today's podcast conversation with Paul Pribbenow, a veteran fundraiser, the president at Augsburg University, and a scholar of Addams' work. During his time as Augsburg‘s president, Paul has been recognized for the transformation of a culture of philanthropy that hinges on deficit-thinking and focuses on what is lacking, to an asset-based perspective that emphasizes Augsburg's high aspirations and unique strengths. In 2019, Paul was named Outstanding Fundraising Professional by The Association of Fundraising Professionals: the highest honor that AFP bestows to its members. In addition to numerous articles on philanthropy, ethics, and not-for-profit management, Paul is perhaps most admired for his bimonthly email newsletter titled, “Notes for the Reflective Practitioner.”Prior to accepting his post at Augsburg University, Paul served as president of Rockford University where Jane Addams graduated in 1882. Building on her legacy, Paul created The Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement and leveraged Addams story to recruit students and interest them in community service. As Paul writes, Addams believed that philanthropy, when properly understood, was the work of citizenship. As he desires for his students and faculty, Paul wants all of us to see and understand philanthropy as Addams did: a “common work” that belongs to all citizens. As always, we are grateful to our friends at CueBack for sponsoring The Fundraising Talent Podcast.
