496: Tonya Cornett and Ian Larkin of UPP Liquids Continue Their Tradition of Challenging Each Other and Winning Together

Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Podcast

While UPP Liquids may be their latest home, Tonya Cornett and Ian Larkin have been brewing together, then apart, then together again, across three different breweries over the past decade and a half. Over that time, they've won countless medals in competitions large and small—including Cornett's prestigious Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Craft Brewing—and they continue that tradition of winning while pushing and challenging each other at UPP in Bend, Oregon. When they ran the entire German-Style Sour Ale category for 10 Barrel at the 2024 World Beer Cup, it was with drastically different takes—the beers were so different from each other, judges had a hard time believing they were made by the same brewery. But that's the energy that Cornett and Larkin bring, and sometimes there are equally great ideas at opposite ends of the spectrum. In this episode, Cornett and Larkin discuss: the unexpected success and evolution of Pinball Wizard oatmeal stout raising pH and increasing finishing gravity to smooth out roast character in stout building body with crystal malt and chocolate rye using Golden Promise as base malt in imperial stout finding the right places for difficult malts such as Thomas Fawcett pale chocolate and amber building a bit of punk rock into imperial stout lowering IBUs to shorten conditioning time in imperial stout entering aged Berliner Weisse into competitions developing and maintaining a 17-year-old mixed lactic bacteria culture optimizing beers for competition, from style and recipe to packaging understanding judging dynamics And more. This episode is brought to you by: G&D Chillers G&D's new Elite 290 Micro-series is built for brewers who care about sustainability and performance. It runs on a Natural Refrigerant with near-zero Global Warming Potential, has a compact footprint, and features variable speed fans for efficiency. They've chilled beer for over 3,000 breweries across North America, and with 24/7 support and remote monitoring, your cold side stays dialed in—day or night. Get the details on natural refrigerant technology at gdchillers.com/podcast. Berkeley Yeast Here's a brewer nightmare. It's the night before packaging. You walk into the brewery, straight to the tank. You pull a sample to do a forced diacetyl test and you wait for it in silence. Something feels not quite right. You reach into the water bath and bring the flask to your nose… And it's a butter bomb. The logistics start running through your head. Do we hold the tank? We have accounts waiting. How many days until it clears? And then you wake up and remember that you use Berkeley Yeast's FRESH™ Chico. It's got ALDC inside every cell, so diacetyl can't even form in the first place. Through primary. Through dry hopping and hop creep. Diacetyl stays ultra-low. So you don't have to add ALDC, or wait for diacetyl to clean up. And most importantly, you don't have to wake up in a cold sweat, worrying about scary stories like these. FRESH™ Chico is now available in dried bricks for as low as $88 at berkeleyyeast.com. Natalie Cheesman, Partner at St. James's Place, joins Sam Oakes to talk about how she built a financial planning practice to £6 million in funds under management in 18 months, without ever fully stepping away from the mortgage business she'd run for 15 years. In this episode, Natalie explains why a transactional mortgage career, however loyal her 1,200-client bank was, left her wanting something more predictable, and what it actually took to build financial planning on top of it rather than instead of it.Natalie talks through passing the CII Investment Advice Diploma in under a year while still running that mortgage business solo, and training through the St. James's Place Academy while continuing to submit mortgage applications in the evenings and on breaks. She describes the support that got her through those first months as a new financial planner, including a business development manager she'd sometimes speak to daily and an administrative specialist who had her submitting business from day one, and how she methodically worked back through her existing client bank and added mortgage-introducer partnerships to grow from £40,000 to £6 million in funds under management through organic growth alone. She also talks about the moment a client realises they can retire years earlier than they thought, what it took to keep building a business through a genuinely hard period in her own life, and what winning the Mike Wilson Award meant to her after 18 months of work.Key takeaways from this episode:Why Natalie kept her mortgage business running while training as a financial plannerHow she passed the CII Investment Advice Diploma in under a year while running that business soloWhat day-to-day support from a St. James's Place business development manager and administrative specialist looked likeHow she rebuilt momentum with her existing 1,200-client mortgage bankHow a mortgage-introducer partnership became a steady source of new businessHow she grew from £40,000 to £6 million in funds under management in 18 monthsWhat winning the Mike Wilson Award meant to her, and the resilience behind itThis is an episode for mortgage advisors weighing up whether financial planning is the right next move for them, and for newer financial planners looking for a practical blueprint on client conversion and introducer relationships.Learn more about St. James's Place at www.sjp.co.uk Financial Planner Life is sponsored by Redmill AdvanceWhether you're starting out, already qualified, or building a training academy, Redmill Advance delivers expert-led learning, exam support and CPD from Level 4 to Chartered.✅ Trusted by top UK firms

Does the sovereignty of God minimize the responsibility of humanity? Reformed theology is often caricaturized by insisting it promotes a world where people lack true humanity. God's work in salvation is said to be in contradiction to human responsibility of proclaiming the gospel and the sinner believing the gospel. But that is not Reformed theology, says Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. A fundamental truth is lacking in this common objection. While it is absolutely God's work, He uses means to accomplish His work. In this sermon on Ephesians 1:11–14 titled “Heard. Believed. Trusted,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones reminds the listener of these means that are always constant as God is working. If these means are not present, then a person cannot become a Christian. They are necessary for the sinner to move from being under the wrath of God to being in Christ. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones carefully works through God's Word and teaches on this extremely important subject. Whether the listener is a faithful Christian who desires to better understand the relationship between evangelism and the work of God or a skeptic of Reformed theology, Dr. Lloyd-Jones will assist in explaining this important truth of Scripture. For decades, many of us in the watchmen community have spent endless hours giving blow-by-blow updates on world events, warning the body of Christ, and keeping watch. But over the past few weeks, a strange and powerful occurance has taken place across the prophetic body; God is bringing many well-trusted, faithful watchmen to an "end before the end."Through a clear, undeniable conviction of the Holy Spirit, the message has been made plain: the assignment of endless posting and tracking every event has reached its full measure. It is finished, and that season is now behind us.This is not a retreat or a surrender. As long as we are on this earth, we will run our race full and strong until our very last breath and the sound of the last trumpet. But our posture has changed. God is calling us to step away from the constant noise and enter into a season of quiet preparation, knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Lord is extremely near.If you have felt that same heavy shift in your spirit, you are not alone. Watch this message to understand what the Holy Spirit is saying to the bride in this final hour.“I have one desire now - to live a life of reckless abandon for the Lord, putting all my energy and strength into it.” ― Elisabeth Elliot, Through Gates of Splendor#Watchmen #Separationfromtheworld #Rapture #JoanieStahlsFieldNotes

Follow me @samirkaji for my thoughts on the venture market, with a focus on the continued evolution of the VC landscape.Welcome back to Venture Unlocked, the podcast that takes you inside the business of venture capital. I'm your host, Samir Kaji.My guest today is Micah Rosenbloom, Managing Partner at Founder Collective, one of the longest standing and respected seed firms in the industry, with early investments in companies like Uber, The Trade Desk, and Coupang. What makes Founder Collective atypical to most successful firms is their decision to keep fund sizes small. In fact, despite their success, they've never raised a fund over 100 million dollars, in a market where nearly every one of their peers has scaled up.In this conversation, Micah and I dig into why they've stayed small, and the data behind it, including a study his team ran on 25 years of venture exits that found the median outcome of the top 500 exits is about 2.7 billion dollars. We also spent time on his post that described why the industry may have lost the plot by obsessing over fund and firm strategy instead of simply focusing on the core of finding unique opportunities that early, priced appropriately, and led by great operators.Micah is a two time founder himself, a clear thinker, and someone who's willing to say what a lot of investors only think. What separates an average automotive salesperson from someone capable of selling more than 40 cars per month? "The more you familiarize yourself with the customer, the more you're going to be able to use that for yourself to build your business as a car salesman." - Josh MacPhee In this episode of the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast, Sean V. Bradley sits down with Josh MacPhee, a top-performing sales consultant at McDonald Buick GMC Cadillac in Moncton, Canada, who sold an incredible 326 vehicles in only his second year in the automotive industry and went on to achieve a 40-car month. Josh reveals the mindset, daily habits, customer-service strategies, and modern tools that helped him rapidly build a powerful client base. From relentless follow-up and constant availability to using social media as a relationship-building engine, his approach challenges the traditional way many sales professionals operate. "Be kind, be honest, really help people, and care about what they're trying to accomplish in buying a vehicle from you." - Josh MacPhee You'll also hear how Josh transformed his experience working in a skateboard shop into a thriving automotive career, multiplied his results far beyond industry averages, and created relationships that continue producing business long after the initial sale. Whether you are brand-new to the showroom or an experienced salesperson looking to break through a performance plateau, this episode delivers practical strategies you can immediately adapt to generate more conversations, strengthen customer loyalty, and sell more vehicles. The numbers are impressive, but the process behind them is where the real value lives. Listen now to discover what Josh does differently. Key Takeaways: ✅ Building strong customer relationships and offering exceptional service are central to achieving consistent high sales figures. ✅ Utilizing social media platforms such as Facebook and Facebook Marketplace can significantly increase referral-based sales. ✅ Regular and effective follow-up is critical in maintaining customer interest and converting leads into sales. ✅ Working closely with managers and leveraging their expertise can help refine sales techniques and improve results. ✅ Embracing technology and community engagement can create additional pathways to expand a personal brand and reach in automotive sales.   About Josh MacPhee Josh MacPhee is a dynamic and successful automotive sales consultant at McDonald Buick GMC Cadillac in Moncton, Canada. With a notable track record of selling 326 units in his second full year and achieving a remarkable 40-car month, Josh has swiftly risen as an influential figure in car sales. Prior to his career in the automotive industry, Josh honed his customer service skills by working at a retail skateboard shop, where he was responsible for cultivating customer relations and building sales initiatives. His commitment to customer service, strategic use of social media for networking, and relentless follow-up tactics are key elements of his sales approach, enabling him to far exceed the national sales averages within his industry. Josh continues to push boundaries and set new records in automotive sales by constantly evolving and adapting his strategies.   Embracing the Grind: How Relentless Follow-Up and Customer Service Revolutionize Car Sales   Key Takeaways: Emphasize the importance of continuous growth and development, even in challenging markets. Foster a relentless commitment to customer service and follow-up. Leverage technology and team dynamics to excel in sales performance.   Relentless Customer Service and Follow-Up in Car Sales In the competitive world of car sales, consistency is key. Josh MacPhee's story illustrates how relentless follow-up and exemplary customer service can create extraordinary success in an environment where most salespeople average less than ten cars monthly. The approach is simple yet profound: make it easy for the customer and be accessible, whether on weekends, late at night, or even during holidays. MacPhee, a sales consultant at McDonald Buick GMC Cadillac in Moncton, Canada, credits his success to these values. "I just talk so much and create such a personal level with my conversations that they want to come back," explains MacPhee. His willingness to take calls late a night and work during off-hours underscores a broader principle: in a performance-based industry, accessibility can set you apart from competitors. This dedication to being available whenever the customer needs support leaves a lasting impact, evidenced by customers who choose him because he's consistently available and knowledgeable. "You wasted no time to get back to me and talk to me the whole time you were off on vacation," a customer reportedly said, highlighting trust and reliability as cornerstones of MacPhee's successful strategy.   Building a Sales Network through Referrals and Community Engagement Effective car sales extend beyond the dealership floor—into community networking and robust referral systems. For MacPhee, referrals significantly contribute to his sales numbers. "We offer $200 for a referral," he states, a small investment when aiming for a fruitful long-lasting business relationship. Beyond financial incentives, MacPhee emphasizes relationship-building by engaging customers on social media platforms like Facebook, maintaining the connection long after the initial sale. Moreover, MacPhee leverages local insights and community relationships. "If it's legit, think about this: why the hell would you not want to incentivize somebody?" he argues, stressing the value of forging lasting connections within the community. Understanding local relevance, he primes his sales strategy by ensuring his presence is acknowledged beyond the transactional relationship, positioning himself as a reliable advisor in the community. By fostering deep ties, both digital and personal, MacPhee's strategy aligns with broader community-focused practices that drive sustained success. His approach taps into a natural cycle—prioritize existing relationships to expand business, maximizing opportunities for referral-based prospects in a strategy that feeds itself.   Harnessing Technology and Team Dynamics In an era where technology plays a transformative role, integrating modern tools into traditional sales processes offers a distinct advantage. However, at McDonald Buick GMC Cadillac, MacPhee sees a fusion of personal effort and minimal tech dependence. "Artificial intelligence? What do you mean?" Queries MacPhee, indicating an opportunity for technological advancement that complements his human-centric approach. Still, the power of a cohesive work environment shouldn't be underestimated. Through collaboration with managers and peers, he builds a reservoir of sales knowledge and refined tactics. Allying with mentors and learning actively, MacPhee draws from a collective base of expertise that deepens individual knowledge, especially for complex negotiations. "It's important because you're getting a second person in to talk," MacPhee shares, emphasizing the value of team-based sales processes. Such environments promote skill sharing and adaptive learning, as colleagues become resources rather than competitors. Thus, success grows not only from independent initiative but from thriving in a supportive team context.   Josh MacPhee's story champions the idea that diligence, customer engagement, and a strategic approach to relationships can transcend the industry norm, catapulting sales beyond expected metrics. Insights from his journey reveal that relentless dedication to customers and collaborative learning environments can redefine success. Though not overly reliant on modern technology, salespeople like MacPhee showcase the power of grinding hard, building a network, and making each customer interaction meaningful. Through this lens, car sales emerge not as a routine job, but as a dynamic business driven by personalities who exceed boundaries through sheer tenacity and astute connection-making.       Resources + Our Proud Sponsors:   ➼ Podium: The AI Platform Powering the Modern Dealership. Alan Philps tells of Nadia, a translator at the Metropol Hotel who became a "secret dissident" after losing faith in Stalinism during the purges. She trusted Australian journalist Godfrey Blunden, believing him to be more reliable than "snobbish" British or career-driven American reporters. She shared her true, dangerous views with him and even took him to visit private Soviet homes, which was strictly forbidden. However, Blunden betrayed her by publishing a novel that thinly disguised her identity and the locations she had shown him. This led to Nadia's arrest in 1948 and an eight-year sentence in the Gulag, where she faced starvation. Her husband and daughter were also broken by the system. Nadia eventually survived, moving to Israel in the 1970s. Philps notes that her grandson is now a professor in Jerusalem, offering a rare "happy ending" amidst the broader tragedy of Soviet brutality. (3)1906

But the Ecuadorian's triumph came after a dramatic finale, with Sepp Kuss looking destined for a famous stage win before crashing twice on the descent into the finish and seeing his hopes disappear. We break down a brutal day in the Alps, from the huge 5,600 metres of climbing to the battle for the breakaway, as Kuss, Carapaz, Jai Hindley and others fought for the stage victory on the final climbs. After Kuss' heartbreak, Carapaz seized the opportunity and powered clear to claim a memorable win on one of the Tour's most iconic climbs. Mads Pedersen once again showed his trademark panache, fighting his way into the breakaway and securing the points needed to all but seal the green jersey. The Dane's willingness to attack even on the toughest mountain stages underlined one of the most impressive points-classification rides in recent Tour history. Behind, Tadej Pogačar swapped his usual attacking role for that of super-domestique, setting the pace on the Galibier and the final climbs to protect UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammate Isaac Del Toro's third place on GC. In this episode, head brewer Patrick Raasch discusses: differentiating between American and West Coast IPA blending pils and two-row malts in IPA using lager yeast to lean into sulfur with more pungent hops brewing their Alpha King–winning double IPA with 34/70 yeast bittering with Mosaic CO2 extract dry hopping under pressure at cooler temperatures competition bottling for minimal oxygen ingress taking IPA from great to medal-winning integrating hops in barrel-aged American barleywine brewing “garden party” rice lager with Japanese cucumber, yuzu, and basil And more. Stage 19 of the 2026 Tour de France delivered one of the greatest spectacles in modern cycling. A 127.9km mountain stage from Gap to Alpe d'Huez, with 3,500 metres of climbing, always promised fireworks, but what unfolded on the Tour's most iconic climb exceeded every expectation. Richard Carapaz, Lenny Martinez and Sepp Kuss looked set to fight for the stage after an elite breakaway survived deep into the final ascent. But behind them, Tadej Pogačar had other ideas. Launching a devastating attack from the GC group, he rode alone up Alpe d'Huez, hunting down the breakaway one rider at a time before attacking again inside the final kilometre to claim one of the most memorable victories of his career. He didn't just win on cycling's most famous climb, he set the fastest ever ascent of Alpe d'Huez. It was a performance that felt almost impossible to comprehend. Was this the greatest ride of Pogačar's career? Is it one of the finest individual performances the Tour de France has ever witnessed? We break down every moment of an unforgettable afternoon in the Alps. We also discuss Carapaz's remarkable back-to-back mountain raids, Lenny Martinez's outstanding ride into second place, Remco Evenepoel strengthening his grip on second overall, and how the battles for the podium and polka-dot jersey have been transformed heading into the final weekend. Carapaz's efforts also moved him into the lead of the King of the Mountains competition, setting up a thrilling fight for the jersey. Ned Boulting and David Millar Breakdown Stage 19 of the Tour de France 2026.

Stage 18 of the 2026 Tour de France was another huge day in the Alps, taking the riders 185.2km from Voiron to Orcières-Merlette with 3,900 metres of climbing. On paper, it looked like another day for the GC contenders—but instead, the breakaway finally had its moment. A world-class group fought all day for the stage, with Richard Carapaz, Matteo Jorgenson, Mauro Schmid, Valentin Paret-Peintre and Tobias Halland Johannessen all sensing a rare opportunity. When the attacks finally came on the final climb, it was Carapaz who made the decisive move, riding clear on the slopes to claim EF Education-EasyPost's first stage victory of the Tour after weeks of relentless attacking. Behind, the general classification battle never truly ignited, despite Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe setting a hard tempo on the final climb. Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, Isaac Del Toro and Paul Seixas all crossed the line together, meaning the fight for yellow—and the battle for the remaining podium places—remains delicately poised heading into the Tour's decisive mountain stages. However, there were signs that UAE Team Emirates-XRG may not be quite as invincible as they have looked. Brendan McNulty abandoned the race through illness, Adam Yates was dropped long before the finale, and for the first time in the high mountains, Pogačar looked noticeably lighter on support. Is that simply the cost of three demanding weeks, or is there finally an opportunity for his rivals to exploit? Elsewhere, Mads Pedersen strengthened his grip on the green jersey by comfortably taking maximum points at the intermediate sprint, putting himself back in control of the points classification after Jasper Philipsen's victory the previous day. My guest today is Matthew Smith. Matthew is the founder and CIO of Chronometer Partners, which invests in energy, industrials, materials, power and utilities, and related infrastructure. For the last 18 months he and his team have modeled nearly every natural gas well, pipeline, and processing asset in the United States. He's reached a conclusion most of the market doesn't share.  Starting in 2028, AI data centers and LNG exports will need more gas than the country can produce and deliver. By his math, the US could exhaust its working natural gas storage by 2030. In his words, the upside risk to prices becomes unbounded and convex. We talk about why this was set in motion long before AI arrived, why the US can't just turn off exports, who wins and loses among producers, nuclear, solar, and the hyperscalers, and what he sees as the only long-term solution.
