Etched - Building AI Hardware to Make Inference Faster and Cheaper - [Invest Like the Best, EP.480]

My guests today are Gavin Uberti and Rob Wachen, the founders of Etched.  A few years ago, when they set out to build a better AI chip than the largest companies in the world, almost everyone I called told me it could not be done. They have since done it, taping out a working chip on their first attempt and becoming the first hardware company founded after ChatGPT to do so. They already have more than a billion dollars of customer demand for their first product, and have raised eight hundred million dollars to build it.  Etched builds chips and systems designed to run AI models faster and at lower cost. They started the company in 2023, and that product is a complete rack for inference, the chip along with the boards, the power delivery, the interconnects, and the manufacturing to produce it all. We talk about the technical bets behind their architecture, how they hired industry legends and paired them with elite 22 year-olds, and why they believe inference will become one of the largest markets in the world. I think you will find the story of what they have built hard to forget. Please enjoy my conversation with Gavin and Rob. For Nick Tedeschi, a great beer evokes memories, and the beer lineup at any of the Post's five Colorado locations is designed to feel familiar, whether you've ordered one there or not. Like the food and the environment, the intention is comfort, with beers designed to tuck into the experience rather than define it. But that doesn't mean they can't stand out on their own, and the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival medals they've won—for dry stout, amber lager, cream ale, and malt liquor—speak to just how impactful these beers can be when made with care and intention. In this episode, Tedeschi discusses: medal-winning malt liquor with robust but refined flavor and low finishing gravity using the Andechs strain for expression and personality brewing single-infusion lagers with character consistently executing on fundamentals tweaking amber lager with locally produced Munich malt unexpected food-and-beer pairings selling beer through the food brewing 3.3 percent ABV beer with body and fullness using newer American hops with Noble-like qualities, such as Adeena And more. This episode is brought to you by: G&D Chillers A quick word for the brewers out there staring down a broken chiller. You know the pain—warm fermentors, stressed yeast, and that sinking feeling when the repair quote lands in your inbox. With refrigerant regulations changing and the cost of obsolete refrigerants skyrocketing, sometimes the fix costs more than the unit is worth. G&D Chillers is there to help, whether you're a small brew pub or large full-scale production brewery. Don't throw good money at bad equipment. Invest in a solution that grows with your brewery—and keeps your tanks cold when it counts. Big thanks to G&D Chillers for supporting this podcast since 2019. Reach out to them at gdhillers.com/podcast to learn how they can support your next six years of growth. Berkeley Yeast Berkeley Yeast just launched Dry Tropics London! Our best-selling liquid yeast strain, now with all the ease-of-use benefits of dry yeast. Dry Tropics London delivers the soft, pillowy mouthfeel and juicy character you'd expect from a top-tier London Ale strain, but with a serious upgrade: a burst of thiols that unleash vibrant, layered notes of grapefruit and passion fruit. A lot of brewers love the clean passion fruit you get from Tropics, but they don't want every IPA to be a tropical-fruit bomb. At the dry yeast price point, you can pitch and ditch without breaking the bank. Or, you can co-pitch with your house strain to adjust the intensity of the notes. And with nationwide free shipping, there's never been a better time to try Dry Tropics. Order now at berkeleyyeast.com and experience the ease and impact of Dry Tropics London Yeast. 488: Wynn Whisenhunt of Wondrous Makes Better Beer by Doing Less

Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2026 72:48

When Wynn Whisenhunt launched Wondrous in the compact bay area town of Emeryville, California—wedged between more well-known neighbors Oakland and Berkeley—he brought with him big ideas about what it would take to make great beer. After growing up around well-known homebrewers like Mike “Tasty” McDole and Jamil Zainasheff, studying brewing in the Siebel-Doemans program, and working at breweries of various scales like Lagunitas and Sante Adairius, he had both the theoretical knowledge and first-hand experience in its practical application, but the first few years of running his own brewery, writing all the recipes, and brewing all the beer taught him the most important lesson of all—the best beers are made by subtraction more than addition. Understanding exactly what each beer needs, and eliminating ingredients or techniques that don't serve that goal or that cause excess intervention, is the real key to taking beers from good to great. In this episode, Whisenhunt discusses both Wondrous Hell—for which he won broze at the 2024 Great American Beer Festival—and his related approach to West Coast IPA like the 98-rated Single Cuff. Along the way, he touches on: designing Hell with initially more complex processes, then simplifying going from a three-yeast blend to dry 34/70 yeast moving from step mashing to single infusion in lager beer unitank process for minimal lager intervention embracing good sulfur and controlling its expression changing from European to North American pils malt in West Coast IPA judging hops not on flavor and aroma but on impact and loudness incorporating modern hop products And more. G&D Chillers G&D now offers their Elite 290 Micro-series with 5H chillers—bringing even more flexibility to their propane-powered lineup. In fact, they're building one right now for Red Clover Ale Co in partnership with Efficiency Vermont. It runs on a Natural Refrigerant with near-zero Global Warming Potential—projected to deliver around 10% more efficiency than A2L refrigerant systems. With 24/7 support and remote monitoring, your cold side stays dialed in—day or night. Explore the Elite 290 Micro-series and more at gdchillers.com/podcast. Arryved Running a brewery means juggling a lot—managing production, serving guests, selling online, and keeping everything moving behind the scenes. That's where Arryved comes in. Unlike generic systems, Arryved brings together taproom service, online sales, brewery management, payments, reporting, and growth tools into one complete platform. So instead of bouncing between systems, you can brew, serve, and sell—all in one place. Visit arryved.com to learn more. John I. This episode is presented courtesy of SailPoint. Rob Sebaugh, Senior Identity Strategist at SailPoint, joins Jeff and Jim for a wide-ranging conversation on the past, present, and future of identity governance. Rob brings more than two decades of practitioner experience to the table, including 16 years running large-scale identity programs before making the move to the vendor side. The conversation covers what identity governance means today, why it must move to the forefront rather than be treated as an afterthought in an agentic world, and how organizations need to think fundamentally differently about non-human identities. Jeff and Jim explore the concept of treating AI as a first-class identity, how AI is beginning to replace rubber-stamp access certifications, the shift toward policy-based access control, and the practical path toward zero standing privilege. Creating Future-Focused Customer Interactions  Shep interviews Zee Hussain, Head of Global Enterprise Solutions at AT&T. He talks about how businesses can elevate customer experiences by anticipating future needs, leveraging industry expertise, and becoming their trusted partner.  This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more:   What does it mean to be a trusted advisor rather than just a vendor in customer relationships?  How can companies anticipate customer needs before customers are even aware of them?  How can innovations be adapted from one industry to another?  What are effective ways to build trust with their customers?  How does technology make customer service more efficient?  Top Takeaways:    Trust and credibility are built by consistently delivering on the basic services and support that customers expect from you. When you do a good job of delivering on your brand's promises to customers, it opens the door to future partnerships with them.  Understand your customers' opportunities and challenges. Go beyond surface-level information. Listen to them and spend time on the front lines to gain insight into their pain points and goals, so you can tailor your solutions to what matters most to them.  A trusted partner doesn't just wait for customers to define what they need. They draw on their own experiences and industry insights to identify potential challenges and opportunities their customers will face in the future.   Great ideas can come from outside your industry. When facing a challenge, ask yourself, How have I solved a similar problem in a different industry, and how can I apply that perspective here?  A growth mindset is having an attitude of consistent learning and curiosity. It's about striving to add value to each interaction with both customers and employees.  Plus, Shep and Zee discuss the impact of companies co-creating ideas and solutions with their customers. Tune in!  Quote:   "If we want to be a trusted advisor for our customers, we need to sit with them side by side and talk about what their desired business outcomes for the future look like and how we can help deliver them."     About:    Zee Hussain is the Head of Global Enterprise Solutions at AT&T.
