Gerbner's book, Christian Slavery, examines a tension many Americans rarely consider: early Protestant slaveholders often treated Christianity as a marker of freedom, while missionaries wanted to convert enslaved people without disrupting slavery. That conflict helped produce what Gerbner calls “Protestant supremacy,” a religious framework that came before the legal solidification of whiteness and helped justify slavery through religious difference. The conversation moves through Quakers in Barbados, baptism, Catholic and Protestant slave systems, enslaved Christians, and theologies used to defend bondage. Everywhere Rome fell, civilization transformed. In Britain, it stopped.That's not a myth. That's what actually happened. Everywhere else the empire fell — Gaul, Hispania, Italy, North Africa — the barbarian successor kingdoms absorbed Roman administration and kept the machine running. The Franks kept Roman law. The Visigoths kept the Christian church. The Ostrogoths kept the Senate and the aqueducts. Even the Vandals in North Africa kept Roman urban life going.In Britain, none of that happened. The Roman garrisons pulled out in 407. The emperor told the Britons to defend themselves in 410. And when the Anglo-Saxons arrived, they didn't do what every other post-Roman successor group did. They didn't inherit. They built wooden halls next to abandoned Roman villas and let the villas fall down. Latin didn't evolve into a Romance language the way it did in Gaul and Hispania — it just vanished. Christianity didn't survive the transition — Pope Gregory the Great had to send Augustine of Canterbury in 597 to start over from pagan ground. Cities didn't get built on top of the old Roman ones — they got built somewhere else while Colchester sat empty for centuries.This is Episode 4 of the "Life After the Fall of Rome" series. Britain is the comparison case for the whole thesis. Everywhere else Rome fell, it transformed. Britain is the exception that proves the rule — the one place where the Hollywood version of the fall (villas abandoned, libraries lost, languages disappeared, lights actually going out) turned out to be true. And the reason it happened is quieter and more dangerous than any invasion narrative: successors who chose not to inherit.The barbarians didn't destroy Roman Britain. Roman Britain was already failing on its own. What the Anglo-Saxons did was build something entirely different on top of it — a new culture with no interest in preserving what came before. Drew and Alex break it down — what changed, what was lost, who's affected, and why some very fit people are about to have a very bad time.What we get into:Waist-to-height ratio is now the only authorized standard. Height-weight screening tables are gone. Secondary methods like DEXA, BodPod, and InBody are gone. The AFT fitness exemption is gone. If your waist divided by your height is 0.55 or above, you are out of compliance. Everyone. No exceptions.Why the research actually supports waist-to-height ratio — as a population-level screening tool, not an individual-level diagnostic. The same literature that backs it up also says it should trigger further assessment, not be the final word.The fitness exemption was one of the most progressive things the Army had ever done on body composition. If you performed above a certain threshold, your body composition didn't matter. That's gone now.Commander's discretion replaces the old progression model. No more monthly measurements, no more defined progression requirements. Whether you're making progress and how long you stay enrolled is entirely up to your chain of command.Who's getting tripped up: postpartum women, shorter stockier men with wide torsos, and apparently some serious competitive athletes in very military-relevant sports.Alex's hot take: this feels like malicious compliance by the Army. They spent years and serious money on the Army Comprehensive Body Composition Study. This directive undoes a lot of that work with a two-page memo.No separations will be completed for 180 days while the Army conducts an assessment. Anyone staying past 2027 would face lower commissions, lost deferred compensation, and eliminated health benefits. The move signals a massive shift in how one of America’s most storied insurance companies sees its future, and it raises serious questions about what happens when a legacy distribution model collides head-on with a technology-driven competitor. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go.   State Farm Built an Empire on Agents, Now It’s Cutting Them State Farm is a 104-year-old company built by one Illinois farmer and a network that grew to serve towns too small for anyone else to bother with. That agent network was the moat, the community trust, and the competitive advantage all rolled into one. For decades, agents generated millions in gross revenue through a subscription-like model where selling a homeowner’s policy meant locking in years of recurring premiums. This year, Progressive took the personal auto crown that State Farm had held since World War Two. Progressive sells more than half its auto policies direct, with no agent, powered by AI. State Farm’s response was to bolt an AI initiative onto the same announcement that gutted its agent program, which is a move that many see as too little, too late.   The Real Opportunity State Farm Is Missing Not all agents are created equal, and this is where State Farm’s leadership may be making its biggest error. There are proactive agents who see disruption as opportunity and reactive ones who are already a cost liability. The CEO’s sweeping contract changes treat both groups the same, when the smarter play would be identifying and doubling down on the proactive agents who are the true super consumers of the agent ecosystem. The same logic applies to policy holders. Insurance is a category that can be Money-balled. Some consumers genuinely love insurance, actively seek coverage, and represent enormous lifetime value. Cutting costs to chase switchers who only care about price is a race to the bottom. State Farm should instead be finding ways to use AI to make its best agents more effective and its best customers more loyal, not abandoning the human relationships that made it dominant in the first place.   The Jevons Paradox and What It Means for State Farm A critical lesson from the technology world applies directly to what State Farm is navigating. When AI began generating code, experts predicted the end of software engineering jobs. New data from Signal Fire, which tracked millions of employees across 80 million companies, shows engineers now represent 55% of all new hires at the biggest tech companies, up from 46% in 2019. AI did not kill the job. It made people who do the job more valuable. The same principle could apply to insurance agents. AI handling the routine, administrative, and analytical parts of an agent’s work should free those agents to do what humans do best, which is build trust. Humans love humans, and in a category as personal as insurance, that truth matters enormously. State Farm’s leadership would be wise to remember that the agent on Main Street is not just a cost line. That agent is often the only reason a customer stayed loyal through decades of competing offers. Nine minutes later, the post had 35,000 views. The move was swift. It was costly. It was final. The Detroit Lions did not wait for the NFL exempt list. They did not wait for Arnold to return to Detroit. They cut ties. Earlier in the day, a Tampa judge set bond at $1,000,000 in a hearing tied to felony charges. Arnold was previously held without bond. Allegations remain to be resolved in court. The team removed the distraction now. Cap Fallout and Roster Math The release hits the 2026 books with a dead salary cap charge of $7,310,000 and adds $1,810,000 in dead money in 2027. For 2026, the Lions actually lose $3,400,000 in cap space. Arnold had two years and $4,800,000 in guaranteed salaries left. Those figures could change with any future league discipline, but today the cap math is clear. Detroit chose standards over savings. Cornerback Plan and the Road to Camp The move opens a roster spot. In NFL roster building, certainty sells. Detroit can survey options without panic and stage a quick ramp when camp opens. What It Means for 2024's Blueprint This is a big hit to the 2024 draft class. Expectations for Arnold had grown after flashes before his injury. The plan envisioned at least a solid No. 2 corner. That vision is gone. The NFL leaves little margin for error, and the Detroit Lions must pivot. The message is unmistakable. The organization will endure short-term pain to safeguard the long-term standard. Israel is in a strategically weakened position – and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will take a hard political hit if reports on the details of U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding are accurate, Haaretz columnist Joshua Leifer said on the Haaretz Podcast. Netanyahu had been “riding high,” planning to face Israel’s upcoming elections in the fall having compensated for his failures that led to October 7 by boldly “reconfiguring the map of the Middle East, and disassembling Iran's proxy network of Hezbollah and Hamas, and taking on the Iranian regime itself,” Leifer said. The Israeli leader thought “his legacy [would] be rehabilitated by those wars. Fast forward to where we are now, and that's not the case, and he’s having to confront that,” Leifer added. “Strategically, Israel's in a terrible place, where the Iranian regime is stronger than it was, and it is now able to enforce a new kind of equation where Israeli freedom of movement is limited by the potential threat of ballistic missiles from Iran – which wasn't the case prior to October 7.” Netanyahu, Leifer said, has been “backed into a corner” on all of Israel’s fronts – Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and now Iran. He must follow Trump’s dictates and has turned Israel into “a total vassal state of the U.S.” and “Trump’s lapdog.” If he were to defy Trump, he runs the risk of losing American support, which could endanger the country even more.
