Abstract: Asymmetric brain function is common across the animal kingdom and involved in language processing, and likely in learning and memory. What regulates asymmetric brain function remains elusive. Here, we show that the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans restructures an asymmetric salt sensing neural circuit during associative learning. Worms memorize and prefer the salt concentration at which they were raised in the presence of food through a left- biased network architecture. When conditioned at elevated salt concentrations, animals change the left-biased to a right-biased network, which explains the changed salt-seeking behavior. The changes in circuit architecture require new synapse formation induced through asymmetric, paracrine insulin-signaling. Therefore, experience-dependent changes in asymmetric network architecture rely on paracrine insulin signaling and are fundamental to learning and behavior. Copy rights belong to original authors. Heather Buelow has been the owner of Dancer's Edge Studio for 19 years. Like many business owners she is no stranger to change, but nothing compares to the wild ride she's been on these last two years where she's had to pivot, pivot, and pivot again. The pandemic has been especially challenging for kids activities, and there were many moments when it looked like dance classes, competitions and recitals were just not going to be possible. But if there's one thing Heather has learned from the world of dance that applies to running a business, it's that you can always find a way if you're willing to pick yourself up after a fall, believe in yourself, and pivot! Heather and her staff have impacted the lives of hundreds and hundreds of children and youth who have come through the DES studios in Blackfalds and Lacombe, teaching them by example that if you get knocked down you can always choose to get back up, lean on your people for strength and advice, learn from the hard experiences, and dream big enough to bring the impossible into reality. In this conversation we talk about Heather's journey as a studio owner, how she's navigated some pretty massive changes in her life recently, and also what it's been like for Miss Heather to watch so many young dancers grow up in the studio, their "second home".

On Troy Fautanu... I thought he did a pretty good job. When you lose a guy like Jaxson Kirkland, that's a bummer, but I felt he came in and played well and was happy that he had some success. On M.J. Ale's improvement... Julius Buelow had a great fall camp and M.J. was dinged up, but as he's gotten more healthy, he's played a lot better and done a good job. Credit to Buelow for having a good camp and M.J. perservering through his injury and getting better. On what Ale needs to improve on to become more dominant... Not one thing, but if I was focused on something, it would be processing things quicker. He's had some really good practices and I feel really good about his progress. On the improvement of the group... I feel like they've really bought in to things. They are making strides. Luke Wattenberg has been playing at a really high level. He's the field general for us out there and he's doing really, really well. On reasons for the lack of success in running the ball... We have run the ball into some tough looks (defensively) and we can play better, but we've improved a lot and are doing a better job. On rotating at right tackle... We have two guys (Matteo Mele and Victor Curne) who are playing well and why not compete for that spot? I am sure they'd prefer to be taking all of the snaps, but I feel like competition makes us all better and why not compete when two guys are playing well? On Henry Bainivalu's progress... Overall I feel like he's played really well. He needs to keep working and improving, but I feel like he's played well overall. On the progress of some of the younger guys... You watch the scout team film and those guys are doing a really good job. Sam Peacock, Roger Rosengarten are doing great jobs. They are progressing. We have over 20 offensive linemen which is the deepest group we've ever had since I've been doing this for 19 years. Lots of depth and talent and they are all pretty young too. On Stanford's front seven... They have guys who have been there since I got here six years ago. Some sixth year seniors. They have some big guys. Looking at the stat sheet, they have surrendered some big plays, but overall, they are pretty solid at stopping the run. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Standard of Care can be a huge contractual issue for engineering firms because if they elevate their Standard of Care in a contract, they can open themselves up to significant uninsured liability. Daniel Buelow, managing director of Willis A&E's Architects & Engineers Division, joined the program to talk about how firms can best manage Standard of Care in their contracts. Here is the wording recommended by Willis to ensure an insurable Standard of Care: “In providing services under this agreement, the consultant will endeavor to perform in a manner consistent with the degree of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the same profession currently practicing under similar circumstances.” Buelow cautions, however, that there are many other instances in contracts where engineers can inadvertently elevate their Standard of Care. Buelow was a co-presenter in an ACEC online class on Standard of Care in April. Click here for more information.

Whether we’re aware of it or not, the past year has introduced most everyone to a new language. It’s not always easy to keep up, but for the sake of courageous conversations, it’s important we try. E., Fatoyinbo, T., Lagomasino, D., Goldberg, L., Holdorf, J., Friess, D., Sasmito, S. D., Sanderman, J., Sievers, M., Buelow, C., Kauffman, B. J., Bryan-Brown, D., Brown, C. J. Abstract: Mangroves have among the highest carbon densities of any tropical forest. These blue carbon ecosystems can store large amounts of carbon for long periods, and their protection reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supports climate change mitigation. The incorporation of mangroves into Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement and their valuation on carbon markets requires predicting how the management of different land-uses can prevent future greenhouse gas emissions and increase CO2 sequestration. Management actions can reduce CO2 emissions and enhance sequestration, but should be guided by predictions of future emissions, not just carbon storage. We project emissions and forgone soil carbon sequestration potential caused by mangrove loss with comprehensive global datasets for carbon stocks, mangrove distribution, deforestation rates, and drivers of land-use change. Emissions from mangrove loss could reach 2,397 Tg CO2eq by the end of the century, or 3,401 Tg CO2eq when considering forgone carbon sequestration. The highest emissions were predicted in southeast and south Asia (West Coral Triangle, Sunda Shelf, and the Bay of Bengal) due to conversion to aquaculture or agriculture, followed by the Caribbean (Tropical Northwest Atlantic) due to clearing and erosion, and the Andaman coast (West Myanmar) and north Brazil due to erosion. Together, these six regions accounted for 90% of the total potential CO2eq future emissions. We highlight hotspots for future emissions and the land-use specfic management actions that could avoid them with appropriate policies and regulation. Copy rights belong to original authors.
