Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell was first elected to the 2nd District seat in 2020. Her win marked the first time that the LA County Board of Supervisors, one of the most powerful legislative groups in the country, was made up of all women. Prior to that she served in the State Legislature as both an Assemblymember and Senator where she has helped pass legislation to increase economic and racial equity, including the passage of the CROWN Act, which was the first law of its kind ever in the nation ending hair discrimination. Former state senator Holly J. Mitchell was elected last year to a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing District 2 - the same district in which she was born and raised. Term limits have turned the traditional local-government-to-legislature pipeline on its head, as has the stratospheric growth of LA: as a Supervisor, Mitchell represents twice as many constituents as she once did in the senate. The LA Board of Supes - known for years as the "five little kings" - are "kings" no more. With Mitchell's election, the Board is, for the first time, made up entirely of women. Two of the other Supervisors, Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl, are, like Mitchell, former state legislators. The Supervisor joined us on this week's podcast to talk about her transition from the capitol to the county, her priorities as a local official, and the governor's drop-in at a 2nd District site to get his COVID vaccine at the beginning of the month. Ms. Nicole Vick is a public health professional, educator, and civic leader committed to women’s issues and social justice issues. Talking with her is like visiting with a longtime friend. She shares with us how she juggles being an adjunct instructor in higher education, a full-time job and being the mom of an adult daughter. She has 12 years of experience as an adjunct professor and currently teaches public health at a college in Los Angeles, California. She also has taught at a few other institutions online and in person. Ms. Vick just published her first book, Pushing Through: Finding the Light in Every Lesson. California Senator Holly J. Mitchell, the first to introduce and name the CROWN Act, wrote the foreword and said this “in reading Nicole’s powerful accounts of family migration, teen parenting in Trojan-land and self-discovery, I am reminded of the many stories I have heard my entire life. The poignant difference is – Nicole did not just survive, she is thriving. Her storytelling is an important reminder to Black women that we have a collective responsibility to ourselves to save ourselves - first.
