A complete lack of abortion access and a climate of fear amongst patients and providers has descended over Texas in the past few years. Wendy Davis, former Texas state senator and Senior Advisor for Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, sits down to talk with us about the current landscape for abortion access in Texas and her famous 2013 filibuster.Texas currently has a complete ban on abortion with extremely limited exceptions. Only a few years prior, in 2021, Texas passed SB 8, which banned abortion at six weeks of pregnancy and allowed virtually any private citizen the ability to sue someone who accessed or attempted to access an abortion. In a move surely meant to make an examples the ousted committee members, we learned just two weeks ago that Georgia's commissioner of the state Department of Public Health, Kathleen Toomey, had informed the entire committee it was being disbanded. Why? It would appear Toomey and state Republican leaders weren't thrilled that Pro Publica was able to go public with information tying Georgia's six-week abortion ban to at least two deaths sicne 2022. Surely there are more, but because the data usually lags by at least two years, we're only learning of what little gets out to the media. Abortion ban backers like Governor Brian Kemp and his appointed DPH head certainly don't appear to like that. Joining me to discuss today was Georgia WIN List executive director Melita Easters, who reminded me that the committee is being repopulated and the deadline for applying for a seat is Friday, December 6th. Texas has one of the worst rates of maternal mortality in the nation. The rate has been increasing across all demographics. Finding out why that is will be difficult, especially after the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee announced it will skip over investigating the years 2022 and 2023. State Rep. Donna Howard give us her reaction.

Texas women are paying the price for the overturning of Roe v. Wade. More stories are coming to light of Texas women dying from treatable crisis pregnancies. Meanwhile the state's Maternal Mortality task force announced it's going to ignore maternal deaths for 2022 and 2023. And how OB-GYNs are fleeing the state due to fear of the state's anti-abortion law.

Today's Headlines: Election Day is just 42 days away, but early voting has already started in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Virginia. Most states offer early voting, except for Alabama, New Hampshire, and Mississippi (which has some exceptions). Meanwhile, Georgia's Board of Elections has sparked controversy with a rule requiring counties to hand-count millions of ballots—raising concerns about delays and errors. Texas has seen a significant surge in maternal deaths since the implementation of its abortion ban, raising questions and concerns about the impact of restrictions on women's health. A recent analysis by the Gender Equity Policy Institute (GEPI) revealed that from 2019 to 2022, the rate of maternal mortality in Texas jumped by 56%. That rise follows the state's 2021 ban on abortion care. Texas' legislature enacted Senate Bill 8 in September 2021, banning abortion as early as five weeks into pregnancy, well before the Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade. When it comes to Black women, who already faced higher risks, they saw their maternal mortality rates climb from 31.6 to 43.6 per 100,000 live births. The Ministry of Health says more than 6,000 women die in Kenya each year due to poor access to maternal health facilities. To help, new technology developed by university students is helping healthcare workers remotely monitor conditions of pregnant women and their children without physical visits to hospital. The bloody history of childbirth is riddled with death and despair. It's a burden that was carried almost entirely by women, behind closed doors, something men took no part in. And, because of that, we know very little about it today. What we do know is that it was an extremely dangerous affair. Mortality was so high, many women wrote a will as soon as they found out they were pregnant. The 18th century saw the beginning of the "medicalization" of childbirth when inexperienced forcep bearing male doctors got involved and began a crusade to put a stop to midwifery.
