Welcome to episode 23 of the Nurtured by Nature podcast. Today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by the sensational Holly Mitchell, a Transformative Coach & Equine Guided Educator based in Gloucestershire, UK. My love of horses is certainly no secret so I was delighted that in this week's inspiring episode I got to speak with Holly, who shares her amazing journey & how her calling to be around horses came to her later in life. We delve into the incredible wisdom that “Being” in the presence of horses has brought into both our lives. How sitting in a space with her herd, you slowly unwind & begin to hear the whispers of your own innate wisdom, as well as that of nature & the interconnectedness of the world around you, offering you the chance to learn to trust how you can be guided by your heart in challenging times towards what feels good, even if your logical mind might be trying to convince you that on paper it doesn't make sense. We also discuss the fascinating research from the HeartMath institute, studying the affects of heart coherence & how the resonance of being around horses in particular can be so beneficial to us. Through it all we are reminded of the importance of community, both human & non-human & how having hope is so important in how we show up & experience life & the impacts we can have. If you're looking for a new way of being & finding resilience then Equine Guided work might just be the missing piece of your puzzle.Learn more about HollySince a child, Holly loved being in nature. Looking back, it was a place she could play and connect to herself. There was an oak tree in her family's woodland that she spent hours around its' big grand branches, doing lord knows what. Getting lost! Holly was raised most of her life on a farm in the Cotswolds, where she now lives with her husband, six horses and Henry, the standard poodle. As a creative, Holly pursued many artistic professions in her career-life. It began early in film and theatre, and later as a freelance photographer, but it was curiosity in her own psychology of mind and that desire to ‘fix herself' that led her through various spiritual teachings. In 2015, after years of struggle trying to get it right, she stumbled across a teaching that truly awoke her to something she had not seen before. That at our core we are never broken and always OK. The understanding, known as the Three Principles, touches lives all over the world and it's simplicity in words was profound. It opened up an understanding about herself that has allowed her to let go of many beliefs and be more of her humanness and ride life instead of trying to drive it. The learning and layers to be pealed are ongoing. This is the discovery of life.Today along with her small herd, in a bubble of nature's English countryside, her desire is to help others point them back to the truth of who they are, providing a space to settle down and connect to their infinite wisdom and beautiful possibilities. Responding to numerous incidents of discrimination against Black children in schools and adults in the workplace – predominantly women – a coalition of advocacy groups, Dove USA and California State Sen. Holly Mitchell came together in 2019 to craft the CROWN Act, which stands for “Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.” This legislation prohibits discrimination based on hair style and texture, including braids, locs, twists and bantu knots. The bill was signed into law that year by Gov. Gavin Newsom, and has since become law in more than a dozen other states and is pending in several more. Dozens of municipalities around the country have also adopted the law and, on March 22nd of this year a federal version of the law cleared the U.S. House of Representatives and is now pending in the Senate. In this episode of the Deep Dive we are joined by now Los Angeles County Second District Supervisor Holly Mitchell to talk about her landmark bill and where the CROWN Act might go from here.
After graduate school, Holly started working as an art and antique appraiser in San Francisco. After moving to New England, Holly then started her career in real estate in 2001 as a real estate appraiser. She saw the market rise and crash, and saw her appraisal business drop 80%. In 2010, Holly started in real estate sales, and went to a lot of classes at KW her first year which helped her get more comfortable with the processes. She was awarded Rookie of the Year for 2011, her first full year in sales. During the ensuing years, Holly attended conferences and realized she needed a larger organization to reach her goals. She has systematically followed a career visioning process, and has been able to identify solid administrative talent for her hires. Holly then started a team along traditional model in 2015. Traditional team models did not provide all that Holly understood agents wanted in a team. She reimagined the team model as a platform business in 2016, and then changed the model in 2017. With these changes, Holly and her team enjoyed rapid success and she gained entry into Gary Keller's Mastermind in 2018. To get started in a team model, Holly recommends starting with the financials. It is important to understand the financials; model it out and know what it looks like. This will help determine how splits and other issues can be best structured. Following a difficult investment experience in the mid-2000s, Holly took a Millionaire Real Estate Investor class. In December of 2020 Holly decided to become serious about investing in real estate and she bought 4 properties the following year. Today Holly leads a team of 18 agents at ABODE Real Estate Group that supports their business and goals and she is still in production. She continues to look for the next bigger opportunity to invest or develop property. Visit Holly Mitchell's Linkedin profile to learn more about her real estate career. Dressed in pajamas covered with stars, the little girl's body is perfectly still, her arms folded neatly over her chest. The wildflowers decorating her hair scatter across the grass in the sharp breeze. Her lips are parted slightly, as if to whisper goodnight for the very last time… When twelve-year-old Holly Mitchell's fragile little body is found on the steps of a mountainside church in the small town of Denton, a doll made from pine cones clasped tightly to her chest, Detective Josie Quinn rushes to attend the scene. She knows this little girl's angelic face, her mother had offered Josie help when she'd needed it most. Searching the girl's house, Josie is devastated to find that Holly's mother is dead too, and her little sister is missing. But why has this family home been stripped of all sharp objects? Re-tracing her steps, Josie finally finds a secret hiding place with Holly's sister inside, terrified, but alive. Moments later, another doll made of twigs turns up. Certain the killer is close by, Josie holds the little girl tight and tries to coax answers from her, but it's clear the pile of burnt photographs and letters found in the greenhouse is her only lead. No one is safe until Josie can figure out the dangerous secret that has escaped this remote family home. Just when Josie is finally closing in on the killer, the unthinkable happens, a tragedy that shakes her to her very core. And on the windshield of her car: a third wooden doll. Could stopping this twisted monster from taking more innocent lives come at the ultimate price for Josie? You can arguably trace the bitter fights over control of the U.S. Supreme Court back to the Clarence Thomas hearings in the early '90's. Flash forward to Merrick Garland, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, and that fight has turned into an all-out brawl. Today, House Democrats introduced a bill to expand the court by four justices, and have further charged the debate over "packing the court" -- so we'll have that debate on In Depth. Former state senator Holly J. Mitchell was elected last year to a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing District 2 - the same district in which she was born and raised. Term limits have turned the traditional local-government-to-legislature pipeline on its head, as has the stratospheric growth of LA: as a Supervisor, Mitchell represents twice as many constituents as she once did in the senate. The LA Board of Supes - known for years as the "five little kings" - are "kings" no more. With Mitchell's election, the Board is, for the first time, made up entirely of women. Two of the other Supervisors, Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl, are, like Mitchell, former state legislators. The Supervisor joined us on this week's podcast to talk about her transition from the capitol to the county, her priorities as a local official, and the governor's drop-in at a 2nd District site to get his COVID vaccine at the beginning of the month. We also asked how her district - one of the hardest hit by COVID - has been dealing with the pandemic. And, finally, we asked the question on everyone's mind: Where in the heck is North Shoestring? Closing tune is "Dreamer" by Black Violin
The COVID-19 vaccine supply looks like it could be getting bigger soon which means more shots into more arms. The FDA says the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine provides strong protection against severe COVID. It's not quite as effective as Pfizer and Moderna but is it good enough? Are we forgetting about kids? The pandemic is hitting them hard when it comes to mental health. Reports detail more cases of kids suffering from anxiety, depression and even suicidal thoughts. California is getting ready to offer the COVID vaccines soon to people younger than 65 who suffer from health problems. So how do health officials make sure people don't fake a disease to cut in line? We've already seen rich people hacking the system. If you're working at home, do you miss your commute? Some people do and are "fake commuting." We chat with LA County's newest Supervisor, Holly Mitchell, about vaccine equity. And a library at the University of Michigan shut down for a couple of days because of spiders. Venomous spiders. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Who's running to fill Holly Mitchell's senate seat, why Facebook should deliver targeted vaccine PSAs, Hollywood is seeking federal pandemic assistance
Governor Gavin Newsom is partnering with Blue Shield and Kaiser to distribute COVID-19 vaccines. The contract with Blue Shield is now public, and the goal is to administer 3 million doses a week starting next month. “It centralizes a system that is very fragmented. So you will see a lot of pulling together there and having one entity deciding where the need is, versus it being distributed to counties, and then counties deciding where the need is,” says Melody Gutierrez, state government and politics reporter for the Los Angeles Times. However, many counties are unhappy about this. Gutierrez talked to Holly Mitchell of the LA County Board of Supervisors on Monday. “She was saying that this is worrisome to her that there's still a lot of murkiness in terms of what this algorithm will produce, and where these doses will be sent.”
What to expect when the impeachment process kick off for a second time; Sup. Holly Mitchell talks about vaccine equity, looking back on the Sylmar Quake.
President Biden has made battling the pandemic his top priority. The big focus now is on vaccine distribution. The president says his administration is working to buy another 200 million doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. But, one senior adviser says it'll be "months before everyone who wants a vaccine will be able to get one." LA County's newest supervisor takes over as the county is the world's COVID-19 hotspot. We ask Holly Mitchell what she and the other supervisors plan to do to keep people safe as more businesses are opening back up. Not all businesses actually shut down when they were supposed to. We get into how they created an underground economy. California Senator Alex Padilla talks to us about plans to get vaccines to the state and if there's enough momentum in the Senate to convict former president Trump in his impeachment trial. A health care worker in Santa Ana died shortly after getting the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. And dogs don't talk, do they? Actually, they can. Sort of. Learn more about your ad choices. Here today to talk about letter reversal, or mirror writing, is Early Years teacher and blogger Holly Mitchell. Witnessing a student progress through the stages of writing development is one of the most rewarding experiences for an early years teacher. Seeing them move from scribbling to representing their ideas as drawings, to starting to write letters to represent ideas and writing words to show their ideas are all magical stages in a child’s literacy development. However, it’s natural that there may be a few letter formation speed bumps or obstacles along the way. And one common obstacle that may occur is letter and/or number reversal. Senator Holly Mitchell rejoins the program for a wide ranging discussion including COVID legislation, the California budget, Black Lives Matter, protesting and police reform and how her legislation is part of a broader effort to bring racial equity and justice to California. As the chair of the Budget and Fiscal Review Committee she discusses the challenges of creating a budget under unprecedented circumstances. Then she argues for the need to peel back the layers of systematic oppression, change policing and incarceration, and how SB 555 and 144 are a set in that direction. At 39:31, we then have Assemblymember Robert Rivas of the 30th District on the show. He discusses growing up in a farm working household and community, the effects of COVID on his district and the challenges of reaching constituents in rural areas. As unrest and protests against police brutality and systemic racism continue, and COVID-19 cases continue to rise in California, many are turning to state and local leaders to address the issues of racial injustice and public health. Holly Mitchell has been a California State Senator since 2010. She’s also a candidate in the 2020 election to represent District 2 on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Christina Pascucci recently spoke with Senator Mitchell on a number of topics including the coronavirus pandemic, its impact on people of color, law enforcement funding, race relations, and more.
Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager represents the 54th Assembly District of California, encompassing Baldwin Hills, the Crenshaw community, all of Culver City, Ladera Heights, Leimert Park, Mar Vista, Mid-City Los Angeles, Palms, Pico-Union, Westwood and Windsor Hills. Kamlager has dedicated her work to creating solutions for equity and justice. In 2019, she passed two bills that incorporated implicit bias training into continued education for healthcare professionals, lawyers and judges. She serves as the Chair of the Select Committee on Incarcerated Women and a member of the board of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. She’s also now the author of a new bill called The C.R.I.S.E.S Act, which calls for community-groups, over the police, to respond to 911 calls from people during a mental health crisis, unhoused people, people exposed to community violent, and people with substance abuse disorders. In this episode, Assemblymember Kamlager gives us a lesson on what it really means to defund the police, her thoughts on policy reform and The Justice in Policing Act of 2020, and why she believes bills like The C.R.I.S.E.S Act is the answer to taking power away from police and back in the hands of our communities. We have a special bonus episode today, about some big news coming from the state of California. We're talking about hair. In today's bonus episode, we will be discussing a ban on discrimination against natural hair that was recently passed in California. The act banning this discrimination was introduced by the Democratic senator, Holly Mitchell, and it is changing the course of history in America. Tune in now, to find out more. We also have an already-recorded episode coming up, where we're talking about the history of black hair in America. That will be followed by a second part, which will come out later this summer, featuring some of the very popular first-person narratives. Show Highlights: On Wednesday, July 3rd, Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, signed into law the Crown Act. The Crown Act makes California the first state to ban workplace and school discrimination against black people for wearing hairstyles such as braids, twists, and locks. The act was introduced by the Democratic senator, Holly Mitchell, a black woman from Los Angeles who wears her hair in locks. California is the first state to explicitly state that those hairstyles are associated with race. Hairstyles which were previously defined as professional have historically been founded on a Eurocentric model, based on straight hair. People who don't have European features feel that they need to fit the Eurocentric model in order to be considered professional. Professional women also sometimes feel that they have to fit the masculine norm in order to be considered professional. What Gavin Newsom had to say about the discrimination that black Americans face. The beauty company, Dove is part of a coalition pushing for more hairstyle protections. Barbershop Books has just been featured in the New York Times and they are adding a layer of involvement into the importance of black barbershops in the United States, this time focusing on the literacy of black boys. And... The US Women's National Soccer Team beat the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup! But we're still fighting for equal pay... Links: Barbershop Books https://barbershopbooks.org/
