And (telling) that story will help them in their relationship with the people around them, and the world, and more importantly, with themselves.BIOMichael McCarty: Mother always told me stories. I began telling stories formally when I was in high school in Chicago (St. Ignatius) in the 60's, stories of Africa and the struggles of African-Americans for freedom. In 1992 I met Joel ben Izzy from Berkeley, CA who was introduced to me as a professional storyteller. “You mean to tell me that people pay you to tell stories!?” I asked. I picked his brain and vowed that I was going to become a professional teller too, and my motto would be “Have mouth. Will run it.” A week or so later I asked myself what would I do as a profession if I was independently wealthy. Tell stories, was my answer. So I went to my local library and began collecting folk tales from different countries and reading books about storytelling. One day the Young Adult Librarian asked me why I was getting so many books of folk tales and asked if I was writing a paper. When I told him that I was a storyteller he said that he had a group of teenagers that wanted to learn storytelling. Could I give them a workshop? I said sure. The workshop was a success. Thus began my career. And I've been running my mouth around the country and around the world ever since. In 1996 I initiated the GRIOT Workshop in Leimert Park in Los Angeles. This is a place where anyone can come and get assistance in developing their storytelling skills. From 2004 until 2008 I was the Pacific Region Representative for the National Storytelling Network (NSN) Board of Directories. My life has been one heaven of a story: Student activist, Black Panther, US Army martial arts instructor, acupuncturist, world traveler, spiritual seeker, construction worker, storyteller, husband, father, crazy friend. On January 15th, 1947, the mutilated body of Elizabeth Short was found in Leimert Park, a public space located in South Los Angeles. Someone had performed an hemicorporectomy, the act of cutting a body in half at a specific point of the body. The woman who first spotted the body out in the open thought it was a mannequin, mostly because the skin color was so pale, a result of Short's fluids and blood being completely drained from her body. In this Anniversary edition we speak with case expert Steve Hodel, a retired detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. Not only is Hodel entrenched in the case, he also has a personal connection.

Episode 36 'The Black Dahlia' Elizabeth Short Part 1In January, 1947, the body of a dead woman was found in a lot in the Leimert Park section of Los Angeles, California. But this wasn't a case of a simple body dumping, the unidentified woman, who would become known as 'The Black Dahlia' had been bisected at the waist, and her body mutilated. Her mouth had been sliced to resemble a ghoulish smile, and she was covered in cigar burns. Examination of her body by the ME would reveal more disturbing details of the torture she endured finally culminating in her death. Eventually, the Black Dhalia was identified as 22 year-old Elizabeth Short, a down on her luck transplant from the East Coast. Elizabeth's murder shocked residents of Los Angeles, and quickly made national headlines. Police were pressured to find the killer fearing that he may strike again. Soon, taunting letters possibly, from the killer, were received. These only deepened the mystery and put more pressure on police. But with no clear suspects, the case began to cool. Over the decades since Short was murdered, theories abound as to who was responsible for her grueseome murder. Although police had potential suspects, the case officially remains unsolved to this day. Some theories have linked Elizabeth's murder to other similar murders. In part 1 of our deep dive into the murder of Elizabeth Short, the team introduces the case to listeners, and takes a closer look at some of the clues in an effort to see if we can solve one of the most infamous, and shocking unsolved American mysteries.Want to listen to this episode, and every episode of Citizen Detective AD-FREE plus get VIP bonus access to our show 'The Scrum'? 1947, le corps d'une femme coupé en deux est trouvé sur une plage californienne.

Ep. #114 Juneteenth — a shortening of June 19th — marks the day chattel slavery ended in the United States. On this day in 1865, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to tell the last enslaved Black Americans they were free. All throughout Los Angeles County, there are celebrations honoring this holiday. But one of the largest is in Leimert Park. A festival has been held there since 2018, with music, food, art, vendors and all sorts of activities, but the Juneteenth tradition in this community goes back decades.Jonathan Leonard, a Texas transplant, is credited with starting it in 1949 by hosting a family barbeque in his backyard. The tradition took root that day in Leimert Park and, over the years, the party grew. This year, some 50,000 people are expected to show up and celebrate Juneteenth in the neighborhood. It's no longer the simple picnic with barbeque, Red Soda and watermelon. Jazmine Sullivan is headlining! But Leonard's mission still drives it. Listen to this episode to learn about that history. Guests: DJ QwessCoast, Juneteenth Leimert Park Festival organizer; Ariyana Leonard and AyEsha Leonard McLaughlin, Jonathan Leonard's daughtersRead more here: The Long Legacy Of Juneteenth In Leimert Park

My only competition was myself. And I just kept saying, You just need one spot. You just need one scholarship. So, when it was my turn, I danced for Jesus, honey. With $50 to her name, Vanessa spent a day of zigzagging the streets by foot starting at Times Square 42rd Street all the way to 95th Street, applying for jobs to support herself. Late that night, she landed her first job at The Cellar, my father's popular Upper West Side restaurant. The connections she made there opened opportunities that helped launch Vanessa's career.  Fast forward more than a few decades and Vanessa Bell Calloway, as she is known since marrying prominent anesthesiologist Anthony Calloway 34 years ago, has enjoyed a career that spans the stage, both big and small. She has earned eight NAACP Image award nominations and won the NAACP Theater Award for Best Actress for her critically-acclaimed role as Zora Neale Hurston in Letters from Zora. She was an original cast member in the Broadway hit, Dream Girls and her resume encompasses a screen career that begins with the daytime soap opera, All My Children, to roles in Coming to America, What's Love Got To Do With It, and Crimson Tide. along with several TV credits. Most recently, Vanessa stars in the BET mini-series, The Black Hamptons, as the shrewd matriarch, Carolyn Britton.
